Reader Supports Hurt For Congress

Editor, The Herald:

Your gushing, glowing front page editorial gospel on Reps. Perriello and Clyburn was replete with their talking-points, but as an apostle of the free press you should have asked a few questions:

(1) Why is this “wink, wink' non-political event” held at a church? What about the separation of church and state, or is that only for a Republican to answer?

(2) You have been quoted, Rep. Clyburn, as saying “There's nothing in the Constitution that says that the federal government has anything to do with most of the stuff we do.” Do you and your good “faith working friend,” Perriello, believe that during this Constitution Week, the Constitution should be abandoned?

(3) You, Democrats, have cut half-trillion dollars from Medicare for senior citizens. The Bible quotes “in that you have done it to the least of these, you have do it unto Me.” Do you have any remorse for the denial of benefits, increase costs and renege on the promises of Medicare for the elderly which will come next year because of your cuts?

As a former Hampton Democratic Chairman, member of the state Central Committee, and campaign manager for more that forty Democratic campaigns, I endorse and support Robert Hurt for Congress. I can't believe that any senior citizen who appreciates the benefits of Medicare, knowing that Perriello and the Democratic Party have voted to cut it, would vote otherwise!
