Longwood University is honoring members of the military wounded in combat with activities on Sept. 17 and 18, including an NCAA women's soccer game, a 5K run/walk, and a soccer game pitting a university faculty and staff team against friends of fallen university alumni and family members.

The Longwood Wounded Warrior Weekend events are free and open to the public, with the exception of the 5K walk/run. The proceeds from the entry fee will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project.

The first Wounded Warrior Weekend event will take place on Friday, Sept. 17, when the Longwood women's soccer team plays Elon University in a game dedicated to the memory of members of the Longwood family who have been killed in action, including Army Capt. Shane Adcock, Marine Corps Sgt. Donald J. Lamar II and Army Sgt. Andrew McConnell. The game will be played at the University Athletics Complex with kick-off at 7 p.m.

Adcock, Lamar and McConnell will be honored during halftime, as will other veterans in attendance. Food and drinks will also be free for attending service members and their families.

Longwood Wounded Warrior Weekend events continue on Saturday, beginning with a Memorial 5K walk/run at 9 a.m. Participants should park at the Lancer Park Clubhouse, and they will bussed to the start/finish line at the Historic Farmville Train Station (510 West Third St.). The race route will be along the High Bridge Trail. The entry fee is included in the price of an event T-shirt. T-shirts will be on sale for $12 beginning Monday, Sept. 13. The price becomes $15 at the soccer game on Sept. 17. The proceeds will benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting severely injured members of the military.

The final event of the weekend is at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, when a team of staff and faculty members from Longwood coached by university president Patrick Finnegan and men's baseball coach Buddy Bolding face off against a “Dream Team” of the friends, family, and former comrades of fallen soldiers for a friendly soccer match at the University Athletics Complex. Donations will be taken at the event for the Wounded Warrior Project.

The Longwood Wounded Warrior Weekend is being organized by a committee of Longwood faculty and staff, including representatives from the university's athletics staff, Information and Instructional Technology Services, Army ROTC detachment, and the Longwood Student Veterans in order to honor the memory of Sgt. McConnell, the brother of two Longwood women's soccer players, and Capt. Adcock and Sgt. Lamar, alumni of the university.
