SEPTEMBER 30 – Emma Smith Barksdale, 89, of Farmville, passed away Wednesday morning, September 29, 2010 in Farmville. She was born April 8, 1921 in Cumberland County to the late Hardy Preston and Mary Isaacs Smith. She was the widow of Thomas Irving Barksdale. She was the last of the family of nine children, being preceded in death by her four brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Barksdale is survived by a daughter, Lucy Brightwell and husband, R.D. of Farmville; grandchildren, Crystal Gibson and husband, Nolan of Cullen and Kelly Jean Brightwell of Glen Allen; great-grandchildren, Hunter and Jacob Gibson; step-granddaughter, Amy Gelle and husband, Cesar of Virginia Beach; step great-grandchildren, Alexis and Samantha Gelle, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held Friday, October 1, at 11 a.m. at Westview Cemetery.

Family will receive friends Thursday evening (today) 6-8 p.m. at the Puckett Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Prince Edward County Rescue Squad.
