Vernon Carter Womack, 95 Retired Prince Edward County Official Died October 7

OCTOBER 12 – Funeral services for Vernon Carter Womack, 95, were held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Farmville Presbyterian Church, with interment in Westview Cemetery.
A retired Prince Edward County elected official for 40 years, Mr. Womack died Thursday, October 7, 2004, in Farmville. He served as Commissioner of the Revenue from 1940-1960, and as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Prince Edward County from 1960 until his retirement in 1980.
Mr. Womack was born in Prince Edward County, the son of the late Emmett Barksdale and Wilson Louisa Swan Womack on May 1, 1909.
He graduated from Prospect High School in 1927 at which time he accepted employment with Farmville Grocery Co. until 1940. During World War II, he was a member of Virginia State Guard and commander of Farmville Company with the rank of Captain.
He was a member and past president of the Virginia Court Clerk's Association, and honorary member and past president of Commissioners of the Revenue Association of Virginia. He was the charter member and past president of Farmville Jaycees, director emeritus and past president and past secretary of Southside Community Hospital Association. Mr. Womack was member of the Rotary Club of Farmville for over 60 years and past president, member and past grand master of the Odd Fellows Lodge, and a member of Farmville Modern Woodman of America.
He was a past director and past chairman of the Board of Directors of The First National Bank of Farmville. He was a member of Farmville Presbyterian Church where he was a former deacon, elder and trustee.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ella Wilkerson Womack.
He is survived by his wife Elizabeth “Lib” P. Womack of Farmville; two daughters, Pauline Preston W. Spencer and her husband William Miller Spencer of Cary, NC, and Emma Louise W. Petoia and her husband Jean-Baptiste Petoia of St. Petersburg, FL; his brother, Edmund Wilson Womack of Farmville; six grandchildren, Mary Alice Spencer of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Anne Preston Spencer and her husband, John Garfield Fowler of Charleston, SC, George Carter Marsh of Culpeper, Ermanno Matteo Petoia, Pauline Preston Petoia, Marie Gabrielle Petoia all of St. Petersburg, FL; a great-grandson, Garfield Spencer Fowler of Charleston, SC, two step-grandchildren, David Willis Price and Thomas Clifton Price, both of Buckingham County.
Mr. Womack was known as “A True Virginia Gentleman with ways that showed kindness and gentleness to everyone. Lives will be richer for having known him. A man who served others his entire life.”
Memorial contributions may be made to the Farmville Presbyterian Church or Prince Edward Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville, was in charge of arrangements.
