Mrs. Claudine Bryant, 82

RICHMOND, July 10 – Claudine Elizabeth Guthrie Bryant, 82, of Richmond, died July 8, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, James Clayton Bryant Sr.

She was the daughter of Elizabeth (Guthrie) and Blythe Samuel Guthrie. She was the granddaughter of Annie Amos and Thomas Guthrie of Buckingham County, and Lillian Coleman and Walter Leroy Guthrie Jr., of Cumberland County.

Mrs. Bryant is survived by two children, Sharon Bryant Baumgarten and son-in-law, Brian McCall Baumgarten, of Potomac Falls, and James Clay-ton Bryant Jr. and daughter-in-law, Melanie P. Bryant, of Richmond; grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth Baumgarten and David Thomas Baumgarten; sister, Lillian Guthrie Adams; brother-in-law, Franklin Grey Adams of Richmond; brothers-in-law, Wesley Bryant, Allen Bryant, William Bryant, Loyd Bryant, Melvin Bryant Sr.; and sisters-in-law, Jewel Bryant, Mary Alice Bryant Johnson; many devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by brothers-in-law, Russel Bryant, M.R. Bryant, Willard Johnson; sisters-in-law, Catherine Bryant, Evelyn Bryant, Angeline Bryant, Betsy Bryant, Ilsie Bryant, and Doris Bryant.

Mrs. Bryant graduated from Farmville State Teachers College (now Longwood University) in 1947, where she received a B.S. degree in Home Economics. In 1972, she received a Masters of Education in Early Childhood from Virginia Commonwealth University.

She was married in Farmville Methodist Church on November 19, 1949 to James Clayton Bryant Sr. of Courtland, VA.

Her teaching career included Ivor High School in Southampton County (1947-51), Richmond City Public Schools (1951-56), Henrico County Pub-lic Schools (1970-71). She ended her career as a kindergarten teacher for Chesterfield County Public Schools (1976-91).

She was a longtime member of Welborne United Methodist Church.

A funeral service was held Thursday, July 10, in Welborne United Methodist Church, Richmond, with interment in Westhampton Memorial Park.
