JUNE 2 – John Porter Glenn, 81, of Farmville, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2009, in Brookview Lodge at The Woodland, Farmville.
Born in Prospect on March 24, 1928, John Porter was the son of the late Lena N. and James Ernest Glenn Sr. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Ernest Glenn Jr. (Lil Ernest) of Prospect; sisters Lavalette G. Henry (Charles) of Richmond and Kathleen G. Carson (Woodrow) of Prospect.
He served in the Navy aboard the USS Moale during the Korean War. For over 50 years he was the owner of Glenn Electronics. He was concessionaire for Holliday Lake State Park for 25 years and Bear Creek State Park for five years.
John Porter was a faithful member of the Farmville United Methodist Church for over 50 years, the McCraw Sunday School Class, the Farmville Lions Club, VFW Post #7059, the Exchange Club, the Jaycees, Farmville Fire Department and an honorary deputy of the Sheriff's Department.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Joan Elizabeth Glenn; two sons, James Jacob (Jamie) Glenn of Amelia, and John Porter (Johnny) Glenn Jr. of Stafford; a granddaughter, Jessica Leigh Glenn of Montclaire and numerous nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held at the Veteran's Cemetery in Amelia on Wednesday, June 3, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Sylvia Meadows will officiate.
Visitation will be on Tuesday (tonight), June 2, in the sanctuary of Farmville United Methodist Church from 5 to 7 p.m.
