George N. Ripley, 83

NORTH CAROLINA, Jan. 13 – George N. Ripley, 83, of Charlotte, died Thursday, January 8, 2009, at Presbyterian Hospital, Main. His funeral service was held Saturday, Jan. 10, in the chapel of Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service, with the Rev. Michael Owens of Eastway Baptist Church officiating. Interment followed in Sharon Memorial Park.

Born June 17, 1925, in Buckingham, a son of the late Floyd and Mamie Guill Ripley, he served with the US Army during World War II. After attending VPI, George worked for 39 years with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., retiring from his position as sales coordinator in 1990. He moved to Charlotte in 1965.

A member of Briar Creek Baptist Church, George had more recently been attending Eastway Baptist Church. He had served as Deacon, as well as in many other capacities in his church. George was a member of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Barden Ripley; daughter, Leslie Theroux of Wilmington, NC.; sons, Robert Dodd and wife, Nancy of Piedmont, SC, Michael Ripley and wife, Stemi of Charlotte, and Lance Ripley and wife, Andrea of Surfside, SC; sisters, Claudine Harris and husband, Guy of Buckingham, Mildred Coates and husband, John of Ellicott City, MD, and Shirley Seay of Dillwyn; brother, Gordon Ripley and wife, Nathalie of Buckingham; nine grand-children, and five great-grandchildren. His sisters, Gladys Baker and Mary Chappell preceded him in death.
