Geneva B. Camp, 106 Retired Teacher, Dies In Dillwyn

DILLWYN, Nov. 3 – Geneva Blackwell Camp, 106, of Dillwyn, departed this life on Friday, October 30, 2009 in Dillwyn. She was born the third child of seven on May 7, 1903 in Kentucky to Mattie Rogers Blackwell and Joseph Warren Blackwell.

Mrs. Camp received her teaching degree from Farmville Teacher's College (Longwood University). She began her teaching career in 1923 in the Buckingham School system. During her 47 years of teaching in several Virginia counties, she returned to Buckingham, retiring from teaching in 1970, after which she worked as a companion for the elderly in Richmond for 20 years.

She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Dillwyn.

Mrs. Camp is widely known for her tatting ability, and her hand work is displayed in many homes of her family, friends and students.

She is survived by a sister, Mary B. Hardiman of Buckingham and many nieces and nephews.

By her request, Mrs. Camp wished her body to be given to science, therefore there will be no memorial service. To celebrate her life, memorial contributions may be given to Salem United Methodist Church, c/o Lynn Nead, 1266 Back Mountain Road, Dillwyn, VA 23936, Dillwyn Rescue Squad or Dillwyn Fire Department.
