Funeral Service Held Monday For Melva “Doll” Scruggs, 78

RICE, Dec. 22 – Melva Lee “Doll” Scruggs, 78, of Rice, died Thursday, December 17, 2009 in Southside Community Hospital.

Born in Prince Edward County, September 22, 1931, Mrs. Scruggs was the daughter of the late Millard Lee and Lizzie Betty Jones Bates. She was formerly a Dispatcher with the Prince Edward County Sheriff's Department.

In addition to her husband, Raymond “Sinclair” Scruggs, she is survived by a special niece whom she considered her daughter, Sandra Duffey and husband, Jimmy of Keysville; brother, Lee Bates Jr. of Keysville; sister, Myrtle Corum of Crewe; two grandchildren, Jason Duffey and Amanda Lawson; two great-grandchildren, Trevor Duffey and C.J. Lawson; a special friend, Dottie Jones of Rice; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was conducted Monday in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, with interment in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

The Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, served the family.
