NEW CANTON, June 3 -Charles Mayo Newton Sr., 68, of New Canton, died Friday, May 30, 2008 at Martha Jefferson Hospital. He was the son of the late Revery Earl and Pauline Garrett Newton. He was predeceased by a brother, Bobby Earl Newton.

Mr. Newton is survived by a son, Charles Mayo Jr. and wife, Jackie of Keswick; daughter, Joann Watkins and husband, Frank of Albemarle; sisters, Juanita Hill of New Canton, Christine Dunivan of Columbia, Peggy Gough of Farmville, Barbara Smith of New Canton, and Margie Childress of Powhatan; brother, Dennis Newton of New Canton; grandchildren, Charles “Chase” Newton of Keswick and Victoria Snoddy of Charlottesville.

He was an avid gardener and enjoyed conversations with his friends.

A graveside funeral service was held Tuesday at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, New Canton.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Zion Baptist Church, New Canton.

Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, served the family.
