Beverly H. Lucas, 85 Retired Teacher Dies June 17

CUMBERLAND, June 22 -Beverly Hammond Lucas, 85, of Cumberland, died Thursday, June 17,2004.

Born March 15, 1919 in Charles Town, West Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Charles Edgar and Lean Wiltshire Hammond. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Made and her brother, James E. Hammond.

Upon graduation from Shepherd College, Mrs. Lucas began her teaching career which spanned 50 years. In addition to being an excellent teacher, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and church worker. She served faithfully in God's calling as a minister's wife and for 58 years was the partner and helpmate of her husband, the Rev. Dargan Lucas.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three children, Beverly Lucas Hill and husband. Jerry of Powhatan, Charles D. Lucas and wife, Linda of Clemmons, NC and Richard D. Lucas and wife, Mary of Roanoke; nine grandchildren, Troy, Lindsey, Ben, Beth, Jeremy, Lauren, John, Scott and Joshua; one great-grandson, Matthew and a sister-in-law, Anne Hammond.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment at 7 p.m. in Trinity Cemetery in Daleville.
