Memorial Service Held Sunday For Elmira Chernault, 88

MARCH 30 – Elmira Elizabeth McCourt Chernault, 88, of Farmville, passed away Wednesday, March 24, 2010 in Farmville.

Born in Buckingham County, June 3, 1921, she was the third child of India Lee Mottley McCourt and Beri McCourt. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Joel H. McCourt and her husband, Raymond Barksdale “Boo” Chernault.

Survivors include her son, John Garland Chernault and wife, Nancy Bryant Chernault of Worsham; two grandchildren, Danielle Renee Chernault of Washington, D.C. and Raymond Leonard Chernault and wife, Billie Jo of Worsham; great-granddaughter, Rachel Lynn Chernault of Worsham; sister, Mary Isabel McCourt Deutch of Dora, AL and a very special friend, Stanley J. Titus of Farmville.

An Alumnus of Longwood College, Mrs. Chernault also studied at M. M. Layne Business School of Farmville. She was a payroll clerk with Farmville Manufacturing Company until she retired in 1983.

In addition to being a member of College Church, Hampden-Sydney, for over 70 years, and a long-time member of the Farmville Prince Edward Historical Society, she was a member of the State and Farmville Rebekah Lodges in which she held many offices including, Noble Grand and Past Noble Grand. Other memberships include The Garden Study Club, Ruth Adams Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) and the Jolly Dollies Homemakers Club.

A memorial service was conducted Sunday, March 28, at College Church, Hampden-Sydney. A private burial was held.
