'Lizzie' Denton, 74 Mother of Local Resident, Dies

DECEMBER 16 – Lola Elizabeth “Lizzie” Shapard Denton, died Friday, December 12, 2003 at Southslde Community Hospital.

She was born January 4, 1908 in Halifax County, a daughter of the late Charlie Lee and Anna Jackson Shapard.

Mrs. Denton was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, since 1929 where she served as WMU leader, Sunbeam Leader, Sunday School teacher and Bible School teacher.

She is survived by three daughters, Margaret D. Johnson of Farmvllle, Helen D. Garnett of Drakes Branch and Dora D. Snotherly of State Road, NC; two sons, Arthur L. Denton and his wife, Lena of Colonial Heights and Ted Denton and his wife, Frankie of Raleigh, NC; two daughters-in-law, Ann Denton Dowdy of Atlanta, GA and Shirley Denton Bennett of Chinquapin, NC; one brother-in-law, Jake Denton of Andersonville, GA; 22 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Luther Denton and sons, Martin and Ray.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. George Vaughan and the Rev. Tony Reeves. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Building Fund or the Charlotte County Rescue Squad.

Browning Funeral Home, Keysville, was in charge of arrangements.
