PAMPLIN, Dec. 2 – James “Jim” Aubrey Gilliam, Jr., 86, retired dairyman, of Pamplin, died Friday, November 28, 2003 in Farmville following a brief Illness.

He was born May 7, 1917 In Prince Edward County, a son of the late John Aubrey and Lona Reynolds Gilliam.

Mr. Gilliam served his country starting in 1939 as part of the Army's Honor Guard at Fort Meyer, VA with subsequent service at Fort Bragg, NC. He completed his World War II military service in November 1945 and returned to Prince Edward County to run the family farm with his father.

He was a member of Elon Baptist Church, a former Director of the Piedmont Soil and Water Conservation District and a former part-time Deputy Sheriff of Prince Edward County.

He is survived by his son, Donald B. Gilliam and his wife, Diane C. of Pamplin; his daughter, Lona G. Burnett and her husband, J. Douglas of Satellite Beach, FL; two granddaughters, Allison G. Hunter and her husband, Terry A. of Pamplin and Shannon Lynn Burnett of Orlando, FL; two great-grandchildren, Adam Brent and Tiffany Anne Hunter both of Pamplin; his stepchildren, Donnie Smith, Tim Smith and Nancy Lutz; one brother, Robert Gilliam of Richmond; three sisters, Lorene G. Harris of Spout Spring, Myrtle G. Carwile of Madisonville and Marguerite G. Clarkson of Newport News. His beloved wives, June Johnston Gilliam and Audrey S. Gilliam, brothers, J. Otway and Clyde W. Gilliam;

his sister, Gladys G. Carwile and two grandchildren, Tracy Lynn and Donald Benjamin Gilliam, preceded him in death.

A funeral service was held Monday at 11 a.m. at Elon Baptist Church, Pamplin, with interment in Olive Branch United Methodist Church Cemetery. The Crewe VFW Post rendered Military Honors at the internment.

Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, was in charge of arrangements.
