Funeral Service Held Tuesday For Elihu C. Ellett. Jr., 85

DECEMBER 30 – Elihu C. Ellett, Jr., died at Brookview Lodge in Farmville on Saturday, December 27, 2003.

He was born April 6, 1918 in Jennings Ordinary, the oldest son of Elihu C. Ellett and Pattye Hubbard Ellett. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Rebecca Ellett, who died February 11, 1995.

He is survived by three sons, Clifford Paul Ellett of Richmond, Marshall L. Ellett of Farmville and Edward Carlton Ellett of Nottoway County; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren' his youngest brother, Joel Motley Ellett of Burkburnett, Texas and his youngest sister, Margaret Ellett Anderson of Alpharetta, Georgia,

Mr. Ellett attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and is a veteran of World War II, having served as both an enlisted man and officer. He was a former sheriff of Nottoway County and a retired farmer. He was a charter member of Post 7819 Veterans of Foreign Wars, served as commander of Post 50 American Legion, Lt. Commander Fourth District American Legion and Chairman Law and Order Committee, American Legion Department of Virginia.

He was active in many facets of the Nottoway County government. He served as chairman of the Nottoway County School Board Selection Committee. Mr. Ellett served on this commission and its predecessor, the Nottoway School Trustee Electoral Board, for over 15 years. He served as chairman of the Nottoway County Zoning Committee, served on the Road Review Board, the Nottoway Board of Assessors, and was Advisor to the Nottoway County Draft Board for 36 Years.

Mr. Ellett served as president of the Nottoway County Farmers Union and was a member of the executive committee of Virginia Farmers Union. He served as chairman of the Nottoway County Democratic Committee, President of the Burkeville Ruritan Club, Lt. Governor Ruritan National Appomattox District and President of the Burkeville Parent Teachers Association.

He was a member of Wards Chapel United Methodist Church, Jennings Ordinary, and served as Superintendent of Sunday School at Wards Chapel and as Superintendent of Sunday School at Barker Memorial United Methodist Church, Burkeville. Mr. Ellett served as charges lay leader Burkeville Charge United Methodist Church and taught the Men's Bible Class at Barker Memorial United Methodist Church in Burkeville for many years.

Funeral services were held at Wards Chapel United Methodist Church today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m.
