Dies Sun., August 31
RICHMOND, Sept. 2 – Eugenia “Jeannie”
Sheffield Culpepper, 93, of Richmond, passed away peacefully at her home on
Sunday, August 31, 2008. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, James
Leroy Culpepper.
She is survived by three daughters, Patricia Gibbs and husband,
Forest, Barbara Townsend and husband, Lynn, and her special daughter and
constant companion, Carolyn Lee; seven grandchildren, Forest Gibbs IV and wife,
Martha, Christian Culpepper Gibbs, Jennifer Gibbs, Tiffany T. Taliaferro and
husband, Foster, Kimberly T. Stansell and husband, Scott, and Sherry T. Allaire
and husband, Tim, and Rhett Town-send; 10 great-grandchildren, Lucas Gibbs,
Nicholas Gibbs, Alexis Gibbs, Wyatt Taliaferro, Ashlyn Taliaferro, Alyssa
Taliaferro, Jacob Leroy Stansell, Sarah Katherine Stansell, James Patrick
Stansell and William Townsend Allaire; and a sister, Grace Williams of Pamplin.
Mrs. Culpepper was born in Farmville, the daughter of Charles
Richard Sheffield and Pattie Budd Sheffield. She moved to Richmond when she
married Leroy. Together they founded J.L. Culpepper & Co. Inc. J.L. Culpepper
Inc.-Richmond Restaurant Service is still a family-owned business today in
Ashland. She was a member of River Road Presbyterian Church, the Country Club of
Virginia and the Tuckahoe Women’s Club.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.,
Wednesday, at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. at River Road
Presbyterian Church, 8960 River Rd., with private interment.

Dies September 1
DILLWYN, Sept. 2 – Burton N. Day, 90, of Dillwyn, died Monday,
September 1, 2008. He was the widower of Alice Bass Day.
He is survived by a daughter, Rachel Rae Day Pittman and husband,
Otis of Surry; two grandchildren, Kenneth Pittman and wife, Wanda of Surry and
Deana Pittman and friend, Kara of Waverly; five great-grandchildren, Brandon
Eggleston, Britney Pittman, Brianne Pittman, Dena Pittman and Taylor Laxton.
Mr. Day was retired from C.O. Railroad for 37-1/2 years.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Dunkum
Funeral Home, with interment in Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight (Tuesday)
at the funeral home.

Myrtle H. Morgan, 90
BUCKINGHAM, Sept. 2 – Myrtle Hardiman Morgan, 90, of Buckingham,
died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008. She was born June 15, 1918 in Buckingham County,
the daughter of the late Aubrey J. Hardiman and Daisy Sharp Hardiman.
She is survived by a son, Jesse A. Morgan Jr. and wife, Sue of
Buckingham; three grandchildren, Steve Morgan, Andy Morgan and Tara Morgan;
three great-grandchildren, Cody Morgan, Kaylyn Morgan and Haley Morgan.
Graveside funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity
United Methodist Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Toga Fire Department.

Frank “Frankie” Osborn, 64
SEPTEMBER 2 – Frank W. “Frankie” Osborn, 64, of Farmville, died in
his sleep on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Holly Manor Nursing Home in Farmville,
following several years of declining health.
He was born October 29, 1943 in Farmville to the late Asa Frank
Osborn and Ann Walthall Osborn. He attended and graduated from Prince Edward
Academy in 1963. Frank then went on to manage Osborn’s Supermarket with his wife
Martha Sue from the mid-60’s until its closing in 1981.
Frankie was known for his kind nature and his love of hunting,
fishing and sports. He was a high school superstar athlete and an avid lover of
the outdoors, and was very active for years in the Square Hunt Club.
He is survived by his mother, Ann W. Osborn; three sons, Vince and
wife, Dana and their three sons, Clay, Matt and Drew of Farmville, Rick of
Raleigh, NC, and Luke of Farmville; a brother, Richard “Shorty” Osborn and wife,
Marilyn of Rice, and their sons, Nash and Jim; great-aunts, Reed Gates of Rice,
Emily Wilkerson of Richmond, and Edith Stafford of Richmond; as well as many
other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 3, at 11 a.m.
at Farmville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Sylvia Meadows will officiate.
Interment will follow at Jamestown Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Rice.
Family will receive friends Tuesday evening (tonight) 7-8:30 p.m.
at the Puckett Funeral Home.

Ruth Corder Haney, 95
SEPTEMBER 2 – Ruth Corder Haney, 95, of Philippi, West Virginia and
Farmville, passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2009 in Farmville. She was born
in Philippi, WV, May 11, 1913, the daughter of the late James Stanley and Audry
Dyer Corder and the sister of the late Robert Stanley Corder. She was the
granddaughter of the late Edmond Roger and Philena McWhorter Dyer and William
Alonzo and Nancy Jane Reynolds Corder.
Ruth was married to Doyle L. Haney, September 5, 1936 in
Winchester. She graduated from Philippi High School in 1931, attended Broddus
College, was a graduate of Temple Business College in Washington, DC, and
received a professional diploma from Kings School of Oratory in Pittsburgh, PA.
Mrs. Haney was a 50-year member of the Eastern Star, Philippi
Chapter Number 41, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a
charter member of the Arktaean Club. She was a member of the Philippi Crim
Memorial United Methodist Church, attended the Heritage Baptist Church in
Farmville, and was a friend of the Guthrie Memorial Chapel in Farmville.
Her husband, Doyle L. Haney preceded Mrs. Haney in death in 1999.
She is survived by a son, Dr. Ronald Lloyde Haney of Farmville, and a daughter,
Janey Haney Kortas, son-in-law, John R. Kortas and grandson, Robert J. Kortas of
Lewisburg, WV.
The funeral of Ruth C. Haney will be Thursday, Sept. 4, at 2 p.m.
at the Crim Memorial United Methodist Church in Philippi, WV. Officiating will
be the Rev. Ann W. Harrison and the Pastor of the Philippi Crim Memorial United
Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Mount Vernon Memorial Cemetery.
The family will greet friends at 1 p.m., one hour before the
funeral.
Donations may be made to the Crim Memorial United Methodist Church.

Of Farmville
Dies September 1
SEPTEMBER 2 – Earl Arthur Thompson, 74, of Farmville, died Monday,
September 1, 2008 at his home.
Born July 4, 1934, he was a son of the late Arthur J. and Bertha
Payne Thompson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Vicie, and his son,
Phillip L. Thompson.
Mr. Thompson is survived by two daughters, Nancy Gail Ferrell and
husband, James of Cumberland and Linda Kay Southall and husband, Andy of
Keysville; four grandchildren, Kristopher Ferrell, Jonathan Ferrell, Phillip
Thompson Jr. and Vicie Anne Southall; three sisters, Della Mendez of Farmville,
Betty Hubbard of Keysville and Minnie Anderson of Farmville; three brothers,
Roscoe Thompson of Buckingham, David Thompson of Bumpass, and Clayton Thompson
of Farmville.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m.
at the Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be
conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.
The Rev. Roger Barnett will officiate.
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Randolph
Fire Department or the Prince Edward County Rescue Squad.
