Obituary
F. Richard Kidder
May 4, 1918 – March 1, 2008
Francis Richard Kidder, PhD, Lt.
Commander U. S. Navy (retired), a World War II survivor as a prisoner of
war of the Japanese, passed away March 1, 2008, at Lanier Village
Estates in Gainesville, Georgia.
Memorial services will be held Friday, March 21, 2008 at
11:00 a.m. in the Auditorium at Lanier Village Estates. The family will
receive friends following the service.
A native of McGehee, Arkansas, Dr. Kidder joined the Navy in
1936 and was stationed on the submarine tender USS Canopus in Manila
Bay, the Philippines, at the beginning of World War II. Damaged by
bombs, his ship was able to limp across the bay to Bataan, where it
served as an equipment repair center for the Army until Bataan was
over-run by the Japanese. After his ship was scuttled, Kidder escaped to
Corregidor, the fortified island at the entrance to Manila Bay, where he
served for 27 days as a rifleman, facing off against the Japanese when
they invaded Corregidor. After General Wainwright surrendered all
American forces in the Philippines, Kidder became a prisoner of war and
was taken by the Japanese to Cabanatuan #3 prison camp, in the
Philippines.
The Japanese then took a group of American prisoners,
including Kidder, on a Hell Ship to mainland Japan to serve as forced
laborers. Held first at a POW camp at Osaka, and then at Tsuraga, he
survived three and a half years as a prisoner before being released and
returned to the United States after the Japanese surrendered. Kidder
stayed in the Navy, served again in the Philippines during the Korean
War, and became commanding officer of an ARD, a seagoing floating dry
dock, before retiring in 1959.
Kidder settled in San Diego, where he married the former
Edith Smith, and the couple had two daughters, Stephanie and Barbara.
Kidder attended San Diego State University, where he received Bachelor’s
and Master’s degrees in Mathematics Education, and then became a math
teacher in a local high school.
In 1966 the Kidder family, starting on a vacation, was
involved in a tragic automobile accident that killed Kidder’s wife,
Edith, and both daughters, Stephanie then 19, and Barbara, who was 16.
Coming back east, Kidder taught briefly at the University of
Tennessee at Chattanooga before enrolling at the University of Georgia,
in Athens, where he received his Doctorate in mathematics education in
1972.
At the University of Georgia he met and married Betty Brewer.
In 1972 the couple moved to Farmville, Virginia, where Kidder served on
the faculty at Longwood College, and Betty Kidder rose to the position
of Treasurer of Longwood before pursuing a career as a stock broker.
After 14 years in Farmville, they retired to Jefferson, Georgia. The
Kidders were active in community affairs, and Richard, an avid reader,
led a successful drive to build a new public library. In 2001 the couple
moved to Lanier Village Estates, a retirement resort in Gainesville,
Georgia. Betty Brewer Kidder died in December 2004. Richard Kidder was
89 at his death.
He is survived by two children, Patti Burch of Athens, GA,
and Bill Condon of Pullman, WA; and seven grandchildren: Courtney
Reichenbach of Elizabeth City, NC; Catherine and Caitlin Burch of
Athens, GA; Jennie Condon and Margaret, Nicholas and Michael Nation of
Beaverton, OR. Richard also leaves family on the West Coast, including
Phyllis Kidder, Tania Addington, Audrey Kidder, and Pam Lillard. There
are also his nieces and nephews in Arkansas: Nancy Smith Jolly, Breck
Smith and Joseph Ray.
