Mary Ellen Beasley
DILLWYN, March 4 — Mary Ellen
Beasley, of Dillwyn, died Monday, March 3, 2008 in Southside Community Hospital,
Farmville. She was the wife of the late Kemper Beasley.
Born April 3, 1919, Mrs. Beasley was the daughter of the late
Thomas and Lula Hopkins Lowe. She was a homemaker and a member of Concord
Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death
by a daughter, Priscilla.
She is survived by two sons, K.M. Beasley Jr. and wife,
Harriette of Dillwyn and T.C. Beasley and wife, Jane of Troutville; four
grandchildren, Kathi Garrett, Kemper Beasley III, Cal Beasley and Kelly Beasley;
three great-grandchildren, Mercer, Carson and Jackson and a sister, Grace Repass
of Appomattox.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at
Concord Baptist Church by the Rev. Rick Caldwell and Kemper Beasley III.
Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at
Shorter Funeral Home.

Joseph M. Law, 80
MARCH 4 — Joseph Marshall Law, 80,
of Church Road died Thursday, February 28, 2008 at the home of his daughter in
Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. Joe was born on February 28, 1928 in Axton, Virginia.
He was the son of the late Thomas Stamps and Anna Hairfield Law. He was twice
married, first to Porter Baird Law and then to Betty Mason Law. He was preceded
in death by his daughter, Donna G. Law and his wife, Betty Mason Law.
Mr. Law was a member of Central Baptist Church, where he had
served as a Sunday school teacher and secretary. Joe retired in 1983 with 35
years of service as a Virginia State Trooper. He also retired from the U.S.
Postal Service with 10 years of service. Joe enjoyed caring for his animals,
gardening, and spending time with family. He was a member of the Dinwiddie
Masonic Lodge and the Virginia State Police Alumni Association.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy Newlin of Martinsburg; a
stepdaughter, Teresa Fish of Manassas; stepsons, Mike Mason of McKenney and Mark
Mason of Richmond; brother, David Law of Staunton; six grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; and loyal caregiver for three years, Cynthia Satterwhite.
A funeral service was held on Monday, March 3, in the
Petersburg Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Homes & Crematory with the Rev.
Bob Smith and the Rev. Carl Weaver officiating. Entombment followed at Southlawn
Memorial Park, Prince George.

Korean War Veteran
Dies Saturday
MARCH 4 — Henderson I. "Sam" Taylor
died Saturday, March 1, 2008 at the age of 77. He was born in New Hope, West
Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene Jones Taylor; his father,
James H. Taylor and his mother, Dolly Gough Taylor.
Mr. Taylor served in the Korean War.
He is survived by his sons, Wayne Taylor and wife, Anna of
Charleston, SC and Craig Taylor and wife, Teresa of Albemarle, NC; daughters,
Cheryl Lesner and husband, John of Naperville, IL and Barbara Upton and husband,
Dale of Fallston, NC; and sisters, Lelia Nuckols, Ercelle Bersch, and Kitty
Boyers.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 4, at the Shorter
Funeral Home with burial at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.

Dies March 3
CUMBERLAND, March 4 —Evelyn Napier
Lane, 86, of Cumberland died Monday, March 3, 2008 in Farmville. She was born in
Charlotte County, the daughter of the late James Otis and Blanche Lewis Napier.
Her husband, Daniel C. Lane, preceded her in death.
She was well-known as a Magistrate for the Judicial system of
Cumberland County for over 40 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia L. Edgerton and
husband, Gregory E. of Raleigh, NC; a brother, Carroll Napier of Appomattox, and
a granddaughter, Anastasia Edgerton of Raleigh, NC.
The family will receive friends at Doyne- Burger- Davis
Funeral Home on Tuesday evening (today) from 7-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday morning at 11
a.m. from Shiloh New Covenant Church, Cumberland, with interment following in
the Center Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Cumberland.

Dies February 26
FEBRUARY 28 – Melissa Garrett Peters, 89, of
Farmville, died on Tuesday, February 26, 2008. She was the widow of the late
Wayne Lee Peters. She was the daughter of the late Cleveland S. Garrett and
Helen Jamerson Garrett, born in Dillwyn on March 7, 1918.
She was a retired seamstress for the Hub and The Fashion
Post.
Mrs. Peters is survived by a daughter, Katherine P. Webster of
Litttleton, CO; sisters, Grace Mottley of Richmond, and Frances Taylor of
Beltsville, MD; brothers, Roy T. Garrett of Farmville, and Ernest Garrett of
Dillwyn; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral
Home on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be con-ducted on Saturday, March 1,
from the Farmville Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with interment following at Westview
Cemetery, Farmville.
Remembrances may be made in her memory to the Farmville
Baptist Church or The American Alzheimers Association.

four nephews, William H. Sutton and wife, Ilona, Harold G. Sutton and wife, Mary

Harry C. Maxey, Sr., 77

Dies February 25
BUCKINGHAM, Feb. 26 — Harry Cecil Maxey
Sr., 77, of Buckingham passed away Monday, February 25, 2008 in Farmville. He
was born June 19, 1930 in Buckingham, the son of the late William Jennings Maxey
Sr. and Mary Poe Maxey. He was the husband of Bettie Davis Maxey.
Mr. Maxey served his country in the United States Navy. He
worked for the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company. His work took him to many
countries including, Curacao, Aruba, Italy, Thailand, Guam and Saudi Arabia. He
also worked as a construction superintendent all up and down the east coast. Mr.
Maxey was a member of St. Andrews Baptist Church; he was a member of the
International Brotherhood of Boilermakers. He owned and operated Moon Field Farm
in Buckingham.
He is survived by his wife, his son, Harry C. Maxey Jr. and
wife, Frankie of North Carolina; brothers, Donald Maxey of Buckingham and Wesley
Maxey of Richmond; sisters, Mary Frances Lindsay, Elizabeth Sullivan and Edith
Thorne all of Richmond; grandchildren, Pamela Maxey Henshaw and husband, Keith
of Farmville, Bettie Maxey Dunnavant and husband, J.W. of Louisa, Cynthia Maxey
Bitrick and husband, Mike of Charlottesville and Harry C. Maxey III of
Bucking-ham and great-grandchildren, Brian Henshaw Jr., Scott and John Henshaw,
Jimmy and Thomas Dunnavant, Victoria and Kaitlyn Bitrick, Harry Maxey IV and
Daiya and Jaile Maxey. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond David Maxey
and three sisters and three brothers.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the
chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in the Arbor Baptist Church
Cemetery in Amelia.
Family will receive friends Wednesday evening 7-9 p.m. at the
funeral home.

Dies February 24
FEBRUARY 26 — Evelyn Doris Swan Rosser, 89, of Farmville,
died Sunday morning, February 24, 2008, at Holly Manor Nursing Home. She was the
wife of the late Calvin Swan Rosser.
Born July 24, 1918 in Buckingham Co., she was a daughter of
the late Willie and Carrie Ragland Swan. She was a member of Elon Baptist Church
and a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Calvin Rosser and wife,
Virginia of Farmville, and William Wilson Rosser of Richmond; two brothers,
William Swan and Hugh Swan, both of Lynchburg and one sister, Ouida Adcock of
Appomattox; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Kesterson
and Corrine Kidd.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 27
at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Andrew Matthews with burial to follow in
the Swan Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on
Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Service Held For
Dr. Alton Harvill, Jr., 91
FEBRUARY 26 – Dr. Alton M. Harvill Jr. departed this life on
Thursday, February 21, 2008 at the age of 91. He was a native of Kentucky. He
attended Murray State University for approximately two years and then attended
the University of Kentucky where he received his B.S. in 1939. He received his
M.S. from the University of Michigan in 1941 (thesis: Composites of Kentucky),
and his PhD in June of 1948 (Phytogeography of the Mosses of Alaska). He served
as a Medical Lab Technician in the United States Army during WWII from 1942
until 1945. During this time, he was predominantly stationed in Alaska where he
began a large collection of mosses to be used for his dissertation.
Dr. Harvill curated the Rocky Mountain Herbarium prior to
going into the Army. He taught at the University of Alabama from 1948 to 1953.
In 1953, he began rubber research in Liberia for two years. He returned to the
United States in 1954, after a tour of Europe, to teach at the River Falls State
College in Wisconsin. In 1956, he began work at the American University in
Cairo, Egypt to operate a one man Biology Department. Upon leaving Egypt, he
toured Geneva for a brief period. After returning to the United States, he
taught at Murray State University for approximately five years. He then spent a
summer at Oxford University until 1962. In 1962, he accepted a position in the
Geological Survey in Washington D.C. working for the Military Branch doing
vegetation studies for the National Intelligence Survey. In the fall of 1963,
Dr. Harvill accepted a position at Longwood College (now Longwood University)
until he retired. It was during this time, that Dr. Harvill began concentrating
on the flora of Virginia. Dr. Harvill has made the most important contribution
to date for the State of Virginia flora.
It was also during this time, the Virginia Botanical
Associates was formed by Dr. Alton M. Harvill Jr. in the mid-1970’s to gather
individuals with similar interests in Virginia’s flora.
The Barbara J. Harvill Fund for Botanical Research was
established to provide research grants to individuals for advancing knowledge of
the phytogeography of Virginia. Dr. Harvill’s dedication to this effort resulted
in three editions of the Atlas of the Virginia Flora (1977-1981, 1986, and 1992)
as well as the Spring Flora of Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 33 years,
Barbara H. Harvill. Dr. Harvill leaves behind many wonderful friends in the
botanical field formed throughout years of dedication and research to botany and
Virginia Flora. He is also survived by his dear friends, Sarah K. Maddox and
Tiffany K. Bergeron.
A graveside funeral service was conducted on Saturday,
February 23, at Westview Cemetery in Farmville by the Rev. Steve Conwell.

FEBRUARY 26 — Dorothy (Jackie) Cyrus Lankford, 78, died
Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Retreat Hospital, Richmond, following a long
battle with cancer. She was the wife of the late Murrell G. Lankford.
Born in Appomattox County, October 15, 1929, she was a
daughter of the late Mott and Aurelia Chenault Cyrus.
She is survived by daughters, Sherri Lee of Lynchburg and
Susan Dalton of Glen Allen; grandchildren, Allen Robertson, Brandi Morgan and
husband, Jason all of Rustburg, and Scott Dalton of Glen Allen;
great-grandchildren, Hunter and Aleighson; a sister, Mildred Blackburn; special
nieces and nephews, Mike and Carolyn Lawson, Pam and Billy Mann, and Rodney and
Donna Lawson; many other nieces and nephews and many friends in Farmville.
A funeral service was held on Friday, February 22 in Reedy
Springs Baptist Church. The burial was a private family service in the church
cemetery.

FEBRUARY 26 — Justine Clem Farmer, 83, of Farmville passed
away Saturday morning, February 23, 2008 in Harrisonburg. She was born June 20,
1924 in Kentucky, the daughter of the late Bradley and Minnie Clem. She was the
widow of Bert Farmer. Mrs. Farmer was a long time member of Farmville United
Methodist Church.
She is survived by her children, Theresa Nichols and husband,
Richard of Mechanicsville, Cindy Farmer of Harrisonburg and Robert E. Farmer and
wife, Bitsy of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Vivian King of Tennessee and
Genevieve King of Kentucky; grandchildren, Paul Stimpson of Farmville, Brad
Stimpson and Emily Blue both of Mechanicsville and Benning Farmer of Richmond
and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Monday, February 25 at the chapel
of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice.

Obituary

CMDR. CRAIG WHITE
Cmdr. Craig
C. L. White, USN Ret. spent his lifetime as the epitome of 'protect and
serve', both for the nation as a Naval officer (USNA '67) and hundreds
of young people as an educator of midshipmen, enlisted personnel,
scouts, and high school students.
Born in Batavia, New York he did tours all over the world
until his military retirement in 1987. He and his wife of 40 years
settled in Farmville where he taught in Cumberland County and restored
one of the historic homes in town.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret, a son and daughter-in-
law, Andrew and Stacy of Buckingham County; a son, Josh of Salt Lake
City, and a daughter, Lara of Virginia Beach, as well as six
grandchildren and a brother, Richard, in Massachusetts.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
A memorial scholarship fund has been created in his name with
the American Indian Scouting Association (Craig White Memorial Fund,
AISA, 365 West Park St., Marquette, Michigan 49855.) Donations can also
be made to the USNA Alumni Association or your local Boy Scout or Girl

Dies February 16
CUMBERLAND, Feb. 19 – Marcus A. Speas, 83, of
Cumberland, died Saturday, February 16, 2008 at his home. He was a retired
Mechanic. He was the son of the late Robert M. and Sarah Towe Speas and was
preceded in death by a son, Raven Speas.
Mr. Speas is survived by three daughters, Rachel and Pat Speas of
Cumberland, and Angela S. Flores of Richmond; a son, Mark Dwayne Speas and wife,
Sharon of Victoria; sisters, Agnes S. Ogle of Cumberland and Forrest S.
Waycaster of Dillwyn; brothers, Bob Speas of Powhatan and David Speas of
Cumberland; a devoted niece and husband, Esther and Gene Bradbury of Cumberland;
11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

FEBRUARY 19 – Ruth Shular Reece, 78, went to
be with the Lord with a smile on her face Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 5:55
p.m.
She was a former employee of Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation, and
was a CNA retired from Holly Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Reece was a member of
Worsham Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Luther Moore; mother,
Eliza Eggleston; sister, Jean Matthews; daughter, Sandra Thomas and infant son,
William Harold Shular.
Mrs. Reece is survived by two sons, Carol Shular of Farmville and
David Shular and wife, Johnna of Prospect; a brother, James Moore and wife,
Shirley of Farmville; sisters, Betty Perkins of Farmville and Velma Grace Webb
and husband, Wayne of Pensacola, FL; brother-in-law, Judd Matthews of
Seiverville, TN; eight grand-children and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Worsham Baptist Church with
interment in the church cemetery.
