Joseph Brand, Sr., 84
World War II Vet
Dies February 13


   GREEN BAY, Feb. 14 – Joseph Lamont Brand Sr., of Green Bay, died Wednesday, February 13, 2008, after a brief illness, at the age of 84. He was a World War II veteran who served in the Active Army and Air Reserve and retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was assigned to the South Pacific in the Solomon Islands, Gilbert Islands, and the Republic of the Philippines as well as Occupied Japan.
   As Welfare Director in San Benito County, CA, he worked with Cesar Chavez in the 1960s. As Welfare Director in Otero County, CO, he was instrumental in removing segregation in local Fraternal Orders in the 1970s.
   Born in Riverside, CA, on May 27, 1923, Mr. Brand has lived in Green Bay since 1984 and was a member of Central Baptist Church. His wife, Elizabeth (February 3, 1998) and one great-grandchild, preceded him in death.
   He is survived by a sister, Noreen Taddiken and husband, Robert of Manhattan Beach, CA; a son, J. Lamont Brand Jr. of Green Bay; a daughter, Nancy offers and husband, Bernie of Newark, OH; stepson, Steve Kirkpatrick and wife, Shelly of Green Bay; and stepdaughter, Shirley Fischer of Fernley, NV; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and many friends and fellow church members.
   Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home, with interment in the Brand Family Cemetery, 1662 Bethel Church Road, Green Bay.
   The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 15, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

   FEBRUARY 14 – Roger Lee Pride Sr., affectionately known as “Buck”, was the son of the late Arvesta L. and Dorothy M. Pride. He was born on November 21, 1953 in Charlotte County.
   “Buck” entered into eternal rest in the early morning on Thursday, January 31, 2008 at the University of Virginia Health Systems Hospital in Charlottesville.
   He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife of 30 years, Odessa H. Pride; two daughters, Leslie Christopher of Richmond and Vanessa L. Pride-West (Bryant) of Amelia; one son, Roger Jr. “B-2” of Abilene; three brothers, Lorenza (Faye) of Richmond, Don of Roanoke, and Jeffrey (Dana) of Portland, OR; three sisters, Doretha Fowlkes and Shelia Williams (Tony) of Richmond, and Alejia Carrington (Perry) of Farmville; two grand-children, Teresa and Miles; three uncles, Wilbert Morton (Mary) of Philadelphia, PA, Hozie (Jackie) Morton of Baltimore, MD, and Haywood Pride of Meherrin; mother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth B. Harvey of Cullen; one “aunt at heart”, Lorenza Jones of Meherrin; three sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Blakey of Petersburg, Sandra Wiley and Debra Harvey of Cullen; one brother-in-law, James Harvey II (Brenda) of Cullen; eight nieces, four nephews, 13 great-nieces and nephews, and a host of many other relatives and friends.
   A funeral service was held Thursday, February 7, at New Bethel Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

Katherine C. Shepard, 91
91, Of Buckingham Co.
Dies February 12

    FEBRUARY 14 – Mrs. Katherine Cook Shepard, 91, of Buckingham County, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Shepard was the widow of Frank Davis Shepard. She was born October 21, 1916, to the late George and Hallie Agee Cook, in Buckingham County.
    Mrs. Shepard was a retired employee of the U.S. House of Representatives.
    She is survived by a daughter, Marie Shepard Lynch and husband, Bobby of Richmond, and a son, Frank Douglas Shepard and wife, Wallis of Charlottesville; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Salem United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery. A reception will follow the funeral service in the church fellowship hall.
    The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home.

Dies February 5


   GLOUCESTER, Feb. 12 — Ralph E. Frost Sr., Ret. MSGT, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 5, 2008. At the age of 17, he began his service to his country in WWII. From 1944 – 1946, he served on the USS GEN. M. C. MEIGS.
   After completing two years of college in Oklahoma he joined the US Army where he served in Korea with company 25th Infantry Division. In 1962 he served on the US Advisory Team 75 in Vietnam. After two tours of duty in Vietnam, he returned to Fort Monroe. He retired in 1967 and relocated to Farmville after which he moved to Gloucester to be with his family.
   His wife, Helga Frost and son, Max L. Frost preceded him in death.
   He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Lambert and husband, Chris, Ursula Jones and husband, Roger and Robin Frost and husband, Dan; a son, Ralph E. Frost Jr.; sister, Nancy Morris; granddaughters, Marie Frost and Rebecca Pratt; grandsons, Michael Sproston, Justin Sproston and William Brock and two great-granddaughters.
   Funeral services, officiated by the Reverend Donald Marsh, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Inurnment will be private.
   The family will receive friends Saturday, from 1 until 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

   POWHATAN, Feb. 12 — Joyce Sue Mullins, 59, of Powhatan, went to meet the Lord, Wednesday, February 6, 2008. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie Sr. and Betty Virginia Nuckols; brother, Milton Lonnie Nuckols Jr. and sister, Alice (Sugar) Nuckols.
   She leaves behind her beloved husband, Carl Mullins; four children Patty and husband, Reed Lyons of Kentucky, Pam Mullins, Kenny and wife, Hiedi Mullins and Angie and husband, Michael Gaines, all of Cumberland; 11 grandchildren, Bucky, Kierra, Ricky, Mikey, Zachery, James, Jalisa, MaKayla, Carl, Alvin, and Jenice; siblings, Dwight Kershner, Betty Smith, Clyde Nuckols, Mamie Lentz, Virgil Nuckols, Greg Nuckols, Rick Nuckols and Terry Nuckols and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
   Funeral services were held Saturday, February 9 at the Full Gospel Church, Powhatan, with interment in the church cemetery.

Thomas R. Mayfield

Dies February 5

   FEBRUARY 12 — Thomas R. Mayfield, retired educator of Farmville died Tuesday, February 5, 2008, in Lynchburg. He was the seventh child born to Nathaniel and Harriet Trotter Mayfield of Boydton on February 9, 1925. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.
   He professed Christ as a young boy and became a member of Saint Paul Baptist Church of Boydton. He later became a member of First Baptist Church in Farmville, where he served as chairman of the Finance Committee, and sang in the Senior Choir and Male Chorus.
   He received his early education from Mecklenburg Public School system. After high school, he served in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946. After his service in the military, Thomas continued his education at Virginia State College, where he received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science Degree in Agricultural Education and Technical Agriculture. He later pursued further studies at Virginia Tech, Longwood College, Virginia Commonwealth University, and University of Virginia.
   During his early years of teaching in Farmville, Thomas met and married the former Letha L. Hembrick in 1953. They were happily married for 41 years, until her death in 1994.
   Mr. Mayfield held many different positions in the field of education. These positions included: Teacher of Vocational Agriculture in Campbell County and Prince Edward County Public Schools (PECPS), Principal of Worsham Elementary School PECPS), Agricultural Education Advisor in the Foreign Service (USAID) of the U.S. State Department in Ghana, Africa, Expert in Vocational Training and Orientation for Rural Youth in Nigeria, Africa, International Labor Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, Director of Vocational Education (PECPS), Deputy Superintendent (PECPS), Chairman of Standards of Quality Planning Council (PECPS), Clerk of the Works for all construction projects in PECPS, and served on numerous visiting committees to other school systems for the Virginia Department of Education.
   Mr. Mayfield retired from the public school system in 1991, but continued to support the school system by serving on various committees and helping with recruiting.
   Dedicated to public service, he was a member of many civic, professional, and social organizations. He received numerous awards for his outstanding contributions to his profession and the community.
   Thomas was a warm, caring person, who was close to his family and friends. Noted for his quick wit and sarcastic sense of humor, he always had a good joke to tell. While he was a strict disciplinarian in the classroom, he served as a father figure to many of his young male students.
  He leaves to cherish loving memories: two beloved sisters, Harriet M. Paige of Irvine, California and Lucretia M. Ritsert of Sickleville, New Jersey; one brother-in-law, Larry Hembrick of Farmville; one sister-in-law, Marian Hembrick  Cyrus of Brea, California; a devoted niece, Atheidra G. Smith of Newport News; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends.
   A funeral service was held Sunday, February 10, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Farmville, with interment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Farmville.

   CHARLOTTE COURT HOUSE, Feb. 12 — Donald Bryan Tinsley, 48, of Charlotte Court House passed away Mon-day morning, February 11, 2008, in Farmville. He was born December 21, 1959 in Arlington, the son of William and Shirley Corbin Tinsley. He was the husband of Beverly Tinsley.
   Mr. Tinsley is survived by his wife, Beverly; his son, Justin Tinsley; his stepson, Joseph Phipps and his brother, Garry Tinsley of Alexandria.
   A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 13 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in the Evergreen Cemetery in Charlotte Court House.

Charles C. Bryant, 53

Dies February 11


   DILLWYN, Feb. 12 – Charles Clayton Bryant, 53, of Dillwyn, passed away Monday, February 11, 2008.
   Born March 6, 1954, he was the son of the late Charles Roy Bryant and Inez Gough Bryant. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Jonathan Carter.
   Clayton is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jane I. Bryant; three sons, James C. Bryant and wife, Kristin of Glen Allen, Toby M. Bryant and Nathan J. Bryant, both of Dillwyn; a brother, Clifford “Red” Bryant and wife, Margie; two sisters, Brenda B. Carter and husband, James, and Cynthia B. Snoddy and husband, David. He was the son-in-law of James B. and the late Shirley H. Ingram of New Canton. He is also survived by many aunts and uncles, 13 nieces and nephews, and six great-nieces and nephews.
   Clayton was a life long member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, Dillwyn. He also served his community as a member of the Buckingham County Rescue Squad and the Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department. He was recently elected Chief of the fire department.
   Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 14, at Bethlelem Baptist Church, with private interment.
   The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church Building Fund, Buckingham County Rescue Squad, or the Dillwyn Volunteer Fire Department.

   RICHMOND, Feb. 12 – Jamey Elizabeth “Aunt Biz” Ingram, was called to heaven Wednesday, February 6, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Penny Rice.
   She is survived by her adopted nieces, Morgan and Paxton Ingram; father, Bruce D. Swane; stepfather, James A. Rice III; grandparents, Della Mendez, Salvador Mendez and James A. Jr. and Virginia Rice; brothers, Jeff Swane and Michael Garner; and sisters, Andrea and Cameron Rice.
   A celebration of her life was held Tuesday (today) at Bliley’s-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road.

   DILLWYN, Feb. 12 – Tadeusz Glowinski, 87, of Dillwyn, died Sunday, February 10, 2008 at his home. He was the widower of Stanislaus VonSobol Glowinski.
   He is survived by his children, Lydia Ann Glowinski of Dillwyn, Diane Evelyn Kyser of Charlottesville, and Richard J. Glowinski of Dillwyn; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
   Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.

   DILLWYN, Feb. 12 – Elizabeth Griffin Thomas, 87, of Dillwyn, died Thursday, February 7, 2008 at her residence surrounded by family and friends. She was born May 30, 1920 in Henrico County, the daughter of the late Montie Earl Griffin and Gracie Lee Walker Griffin, and widow of Earl Letcher Thomas.
   She is survived by two sons, Michael W. Thomas of Ruther Glen and Montie E. Thomas of Farmville; two grandchildren, Robert (B.T.) Thomas and Michelle T. Brightwell; four great-grandchildren, Grayson, Trevor and Carter Brightwell and Jackson Thomas.
   Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home with interment in Rocky Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Virginia E. Latham, 91

Dies February 5


   RICHMOND, Feb. 7 —Virginia E. Latham, 91, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2008. She was the widow of Alton L. Latham.
   She is survived by a son, Thomas A. Latham and wife, Hazel; daughter, Barbara Lynn Latham; granddaughter, Sherry Latham Lewis; sister, Carrie Moore; brothers, Harley, Clarence and Harold Easter; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Glenn and Vernon Easter.
   Mrs. Latham retired from Laburnum Elementary School in the Henrico County School System as a secretary after 34 years of service.
   The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday (to-day) at Bliley's Staples Mill Funeral Home, 8510 Staples Mill Road, where a funeral service will be held at noon Friday, Feb. 8, with interment in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

   He is survived by his mother, Pamela Henderson; step-father, Reggie Henderson, two sisters, JoAnn Lynch of Glenview, IL and Sarah Harrington of Alpharetta, GA; three nieces; two nephews; his wife, Maggie and two stepchildren, Steven and Cati Lignon.

   FEBRUARY 7 — Marshel Lynn “Pete” Justice, 60, of Rice passed away Wednesday evening, February 6, 2008 in Farmville. He was born March 19, 1947 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, the son of Francis Henry Beech and the late James Justice. He was the husband of Lisa Jeanne Justice.
   He was a mechanic in the local area for many years. Recently he worked with his wife, Lisa at Justice Appraisals. He was a loving and devoted husband.
   He is survived by his wife, his children, Marshel Justice Jr. of Charlottesville, Rita Call of Buckingham, Tina Stropp of Farmville, Jason Justice of Cumberland and Aaron Justice of Richmond; his stepchildren, Amanda Cooper of Plainfield, NJ and Daniel Cooper of Rice; brothers, David Justice and wife, Jean of North Carolina and Jimmy Justice of Florida; sisters, Martha Riddle and husband, Bob of Cumberland and Mary Shaffer of Ohio; six grand-children and one great-grandson.
   A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 9, at 3:30 p.m. at the chapel of Puckett Funeral Home.

   DILLWYN, Feb. 7 – Margaret Virginia Hunt Marsh, 81, of Dillwyn, died Monday, February 4, 2008. She was born February 6, 1926 in Scottsville, the daughter of the late Clarence A. Hunt and Daisy Adcock Hunt and widow of Harold Fillmore Marsh. She was preceded in death by a sister, Francis Bell Fling and a brother, James Alfred Hunt.
   Mrs. Marsh is survived by three children, James Marsh and wife, Marjorie, and Harold Lee Marsh all of Dillwyn and Janet LeBlanc and husband, Ronald of Wheaton, MD; sister, Joyce Lucille Wemple of Damascus, MD; brother, Leonard V. Hunt of Farmville; eight grand-children, Angela Marsh of Amelia, Gordon Marsh of Cumberland, Harold Lee Marsh of West Virginia, Todd Marsh of Maryland, Michael Marsh of Arizona, Desiree Butler of Maryland, Jacque Marsh of Georgia, and James Marsh of Georgia; and 25 great-grandchildren.
