    PAMPLIN, Feb. 5 - Dorothy Griffith McManus, 86, of Pamplin, died Friday, February 1, 2008 in Lynchburg.
    She is survived by her daughter, Mildred M. Grenouillou and husband, Roland L. Jr.; grandchildren, Roland L. Grenouillou III of Wake Forest, NC and Margaret Kate Pullen and husband, Daniel of Buxton, NC; great-grandchildren, Jackson Naylor Pullen and Makenzey Reed Pullen, both of Buxton, NC; brothers, James Arthur Griffith Jr. and wife, Evelyn and Ronald Gerald Griffith and wife, Shirley all of Charlotte, NC; and a sister, Virginia Ruth Holbrook of Macon, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack T. McManus.
    A graveside funeral service was conducted Monday, Feb. 4, in the Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, NC.

Dies January 31


    DILLWYN, Feb. 5 - William Edgar (Bill) LeSueur, 85, of Dillwyn, died Thursday, January 31, 2008. He was born July 8, 1922 in Buckingham County, the son of the late Edgar LeSueur and Martha Bryant LeSueur, and widower of Louise Thomas LeSueur in 1999; and was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
    He was a retired employee of Dominion Virginia Power.
   He is survived by a son, Larry LeSueur of Dillwyn; a daughter, Ellen Stout of Charlottesville; six grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
    Graveside funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 3, at Arvon Baptist Church, Arvonia.
    Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, was in charge of arrangements.

   DILLWYN, Jan. 31 - Francis Murray (Frank) Hurlbrink, 75, of Dillwyn, died Saturday, January 26, 2008. He was born January 4, 1933 in Philadelphia, the son of the late David W. Hurlbrink and Anne Marie Murray Hurlbrink and was preceded in death by a brother, David William Hurlbrink.
   He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Barbara Newton Hurlbrink; his children, David William Hurlbrink of Pennsylvania and Suzanne Michele Vance of Maryland; step-children, Keith Reardon of Chicago, Kelly Reardon and Robyn Jamerson both of Dillwyn; sisters, Nancy Bradshaw of Washington State, and Sister Susan Hurlbrink of Philadelphia; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Frank was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He enjoyed his time spent at the Longwood Golf Course and golfing with his wife and many friends.
   Contributions may be made to the Longwood University Foundation, 201 High St., Farmville, VA 23901 in honor of the Junior Golf Program.
   Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home with interment in Bethlehem Baptist Cemetery.

Kyle Robert Sumner

Kyle R. Sumner, 91

   JANUARY 31 — Kyle Robert Sumner, 91, of Farmville, died Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at Southside Community Hospital. He was born June 3, 1916 in Fancy Gap. Mr. Sumner graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1942 with a B.A. in Agricultural Education. He received advanced ROTC training at VPI, was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant upon graduation and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1946 he began work with the Soil Conservation Service (U.S. Department of Agriculture) in Independence.
   Mr. Sumner retired from Federal Service in 1973 and worked with the Cumberland Health Department as County Sanitarian until his retirement from the State in 1984. He attended evening classes at Virginia Commonwealth University and received his Master’s Degree in Counselor Education in 1975.
   After retirement, Mr. Sumner served as a Volunteer at Southside Community Hospital for 12 years. A devout Christian, Mr. Sumner joined Gideons International in 1970. He was an active church member and served in various leadership and service positions in the Independence United Methodist Church, Antioch United Methodist Church, Payne Memorial United Methodist Church and Farmville United Methodist Church.
   Mr. Sumner was predeceased by his parents, Robert Fulton Sumner and Alverta Brendle Sumner; five sisters, Ruby Sumner, Claudine Sumner, Ruth Hill, Bernice Thomas and Iva Lea Easter, one daughter, Notra Kylene Sumner, and one granddaughter, Erika Susan Sumner. He is survived by his devoted wife, Betty Hash Sumner; two sons, Timothy Kyle Sumner and wife, Jane, Anthony Walbert Sumner, and wife, Amy; his brother, William Claron Sumner; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Kylene Sumner, Jonathan Kyle Sumner, Lydia Jane Sumner, Juliana Kristin Sumner and Emily Joelle Sumner.
   A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 2, at 11 a.m. at Farmville United Methodist Church with interment to be held on Monday, February 4, at 10 a.m. at Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery in Amelia.
   Family will receive friends Friday evening 6-8 p.m. at the Puckett Funeral Home.

   MARYLAND, Jan. 31 - James D. Drain, 102, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord Monday, January 7, 2008, at Citizens Care and Rehab Center, Frederick, Maryland.
   He was born August 12, 1905, in Buena Vista to William D. and Emma Branham Drain, and was a devoted father to Joyce L. Kidwell of Frederick, MD and Gloria A. Graves of Montgomery Village, MD.
   He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Ann C. Drain; a grandson, Keith A. Miles of Gettysburg, PA; sisters, Bertha Level, Nannie Carter, and Juanita Giles, and brother, Russell "Pete" Drain, all of VA.
   Mr. Drain was formerly of Rockville, MD, and Lehigh Acres, FL. He was a dedicated member of the Derwood Methodist Church of Derwood, MD, and Christ United Methodist Church of Lehigh Acres, FL. He was the oldest known, proud, living member of the Monacan Indian Tribe.

   ARKANSAS, Jan. 31 — Ruth "Nanny" McMurry, 75, of White Hall, Arkansas, died Monday, January 28, 2008, at Jefferson Regional Medical Center. She was born November 13, 1932, in Drew County, AR to the late Edward and Ruth Kilgore Green.
   She received her education in the Monticello School District and was a member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Levi, AR where she worked with the youth. She was a home-maker.
   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Johnny Hoyle McMurry; two brothers, John Green and Ray Green; and five sisters, Mittie Sanderlin, Elizabeth Rauls, Ruby Patrick, Estelle Dunn and Mary Farmer.
   She is survived by a son, Jeff McMurry and wife, Dianne of Phenix; a daughter, Vicki Kelly and husband, Tommy of White Hall; five grandchildren, Amanda Pippenger, Joshua McMurry, Mandy McMurry, Michelle Rumaker and Katie Rumaker; and two great-grandchildren, Billy and Paige Pippenger.
   Visitation will be held from 6 - 8 p.m., Thursday (today), at Cranford Funeral Home of White Hall.
   A private graveside service will be held with Reverend B.K. Harris officiating.

   KEYSVILLE, Jan. 31 – Ernest W. Chatham, 96, of Keysville, died Wednesday, January 30, 2008. He was the son of the late Wade and Blanche Smith Chatham.
   Mr. Chatham was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
   Surviving are one brother, Lee Chatham of Richmond; two sisters, Sadie C. Jones of Chapel Hill, NC, and Virginia Dare McChristian of Farmville; and many nieces and nephews.

George Chambers Adams

George “Buster” Adams, 75

Dies January 27


   CARTERSVILLE, Jan. 29 — George Chambers “Buster” Adams, 75, of Cartersville, died the evening of Sunday, January 27, 2008 at Bon Secours – St. Francis Hospital. He was born March 7, 1932 in Cumberland County to William Franklin and Jessie Walton Adams.
   Buster was the two-time marble shooting champion of Lewis School in Raleigh, NC, in 1946 and 1947. At the age of 18, he entered the U.S. Air Force on January 16, 1950 in Raleigh, NC, working in Communications and Cryptography. His overseas assignments included French Morocco, Japan, Korea, Okinawa, Vietnam and Melville Mountain, Labrador. He served in the Korean War and in the Vietnam War. He was honored twice with the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious service and retired after over 26 years of service.
   He was the hub of communication between the different branches of the Adams/Walton family. His frequent phone calls kept the information flowing from California to Mississippi to Virginia and beyond. He loved his truck, his hats, and his Hardee’s biscuits, but most especially his family and friends.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Suk Cha, his brothers, Walton Franklin, John Samuel, Clyde Ottway, and Thomas Melvin Adams; and his sister, Martha Leach Keller.
   He is survived by a dear, faithful friend, Linda Williams of Biloxi, MS; a daughter, Dawn Kim Adams and husband, Alex Vinson of Alameda, CA; a son, William Franklin Adams and wife, Jennifer Facchine of Mechanicsburg, PA; brother, William Harvey Adams of Raleigh, NC; sister, Jessie Joyce Adams Beasley of Apex, NC; and two grandchildren, Jessica Diane Adams and William George Adams.
   A visitation will be held on Friday, February 1 from 6- 8 p.m. at Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, 3215 Anderson Highway, Powhatan.
   A funeral with military honors will be held at Thomas Chapel, UMC, 1313 Cartersville Rd., Cartersville, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 2. There will be a viewing one hour prior to the funeral.

   JANUARY 29 — Dr. Warren Xavier Collmann, 86, of Farmville, died on Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at Southside Community Hospital. He was born on February 27, 1921 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents, Xavier Kuehn and Lillian Howe Collmann; his former wife of nineteen years, Olga Tuhy Collmann; and a younger brother, I. Reid Collmann. He is survived by his loving wife of forty-one years, Barbara Vernon Collmann; a brother, Spencer Howe Collmann of Newton Square, Pennsylvania; a sister-in-law, Ray Weller Collmann of Knoxville, Tennessee; his brother- and sister-and-law, David and Beth Vernon of West Chester, Pennsylvania; his children, Bruce Warren Collmann of West Chester, Pennsylvania; David Jonathan Collmann of Roanoke; Holly Collmann Garnett and husband, Lockett Wootton Garnett of Richmond; Mark Robin Collmann of Farmville; R. Douglas Schneider of Farmville; Richard Laurence Collmann and wife, Jeri Collins Collmann of Jacksonville, North Carolina; Susan Collmann Tobin and husband, Timothy Call Tobin of Clifton Forge; and Sally Collmann Bass and husband, Joe David Bass of Rice. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Dr. Collmann was a graduate of Lehigh University and received his medical doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. In the middle of his medical school training, he was called to duty to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. Following the war, he completed his training and surgical residency at the University of Pennsylvania. He had surgical practices in Washington and West Chester, Pennsylvania before moving to Farmville in 1969. He then practiced medicine and surgery in Farmville from 1969 until retiring in 2003. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #442 for sixty-one years. He was also a member of the American Medical Association and Johns Memorial Episcopal Church. He served as a staff physician for Stackpole, a local industry; as an infirmary physician at Hampden-Sydney College for twenty-two years; and as a physician for Holly Manor Nursing Home in Farmville. He was an avid orchid hobbyist and member of the Eastern Orchid Congress and his local chapter, Richmond Orchid Society.
   A funeral service was held on Saturday, January 26 at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church in Farmville with interment at Westview Cemetery.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Johns Memorial Episcopal Church, Centra Southside Community Hospital, or the Prince Edward County Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Albert G. Rawlins, 61


   MARYLAND, Jan. 29 — Albert George Rawlins, 61, died in Columbia, Maryland on Sunday, December 16, 2007. He was the youngest of four children born on July 19, 1946, to Dr. Albert Rawlins and Mrs. Connie Rawlins. He was the consummate musician specializing in Early Music. His expertise took him in many directions from his beginnings in Farmville. He taught vocal music in Chicago, Illinois and Hartford, Hamden and New Haven, Connecticut. He was a performer and lecturer with the Early Music Ensembles in Connecticut, Michigan and Illinois from 1974 to 2007.
   Mr. Rawlins was an active and beloved member of the South Congregational Church in Hartford, Connecticut, where he sang in the choir, directed the children’s choir and taught recorder. He was dearly loved and respected by all who knew him. A memorial service was held on January 5 in Hartford at his church.
   He is survived by three sisters, Sylvia Rawlins of Merrillville, IN, Ivy Ward (Gerald) of Columbia, MD, and Shirley Reid of North Plainfield, NJ; a nephew, Jeffrey Reid of Dimona, Israel; an aunt, Ophelia Venable; cousins, Karen Scott (Eddie) and Katrina Venable both of Norfolk, Frances Madden of Silver Spring, MD, Adina Madden of Beltsville, MD, Eddie Scott Jr. of Virginia Beach, Adelle Rivers of Bronx, NY, and Saundra McMichael of Bronx, NY and other relatives and friends.
   A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 2 at 11 a.m. at Beulah A.M.E. Church on Main Street in Farmville with interment at the Odd Fellows Cemetery.

   She is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Ann (Becky) Wharam; a son, Herbert G. Wharam Jr. and wife, Terry; a son by choice, Charles S.    KEYSVILLE, Jan. 29 — Mrs. Josephine Sadler Rickmond, of Farmville, died at Britthaven Nursing Home in Keysville on Sunday, January 27, 2008. She was born November 21, 1919 in Halifax County. She was the wife of the late Phillip L. Rickmond.
   She is survived by her two sons, Owen L. Rickmond and wife, Becky and Norman L. Rickmond and wife, Diane all of Cumberland; her two daughters, Ann M. Gosnell and husband, Don and Nancy J. Harris and husband, Sonny all of Farmville; 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 5 five great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Owen and Mary Bass both of South Boston and Myrtle Ray of Clarksville. She was preceded in death by sisters, Nora Gravitt, Geneva Link and Annie Jones, and brothers, Jack and Pete Sadler.

   JANUARY 24 – Clyde Jefferson Davis died suddenly Wednesday, January 23, 2008. Mr. Davis was a respected business leader in the Farmville community for over 50 years, including his work as the owner-operator of Davis Pontiac-GMC Sales. Mr. Davis also oversaw his extensive farm holdings in the area surrounding Farmville.
   He was born May 27, 1925 in Cumberland County, son of the late John Washington Davis Sr. and Florence Tatum Davis. Three brothers preceded him in death: Kenneth E. Davis, John W. Davis Jr., and G. Maynard Davis; and a grandson, Brandon T. Davis. He was a member of Browns Chapel United Methodist Church.
   Clyde leaves to hold dear his memory a loving and devoted wife, Ressie A. Davis; children, Penny Webb and family of Powhatan, Jack and wife Kim, Wayne and wife, Teresa, Charlotte Cyrus and husband, G. R., all of Farmville, and Jill Fees and husband, John of Lynchburg; a sister, Louise Davis Schultz of Daleville, and a brother, James K. Davis of Buckingham; grandchildren, Trey Davis, Tatum Davis, Davis Cyrus, Lindsey Davis, Kari Davis, Anna Cyrus, Tanner Cyrus, all of Farmville, and Stephanie Fees of Lynchburg.
   Clyde loved more than anything the time he spent with family, talking with all his friends and co-workers at the dealership, and driving to look at his farms. Clyde expected the best from those he knew. He was a man of his word and a handshake was enough. Clyde was a fine example of success through hard work.

Lisa Edwards

Dies In Mexico


   CUMBERLAND, Jan. 24 — Lisa Edwards, wife of Daniel P. Edwards Jr. and Warden of Dillwyn Correctional Center, succumbed to thyroid carcinoma Sunday, January 20, 2008 while undergoing cancer therapy in Tijuana, Mexico.
   She was a graduate of the University of Dayton and began her career in corrections at Westville Prison in Indiana until continuing her education, receiving her Master’s degree in Psychology and working on her doctorate.
   Recruited by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Corrections in 1988, she worked at several institutions; was promoted to Warden at Dillwyn Correctional Center in 1993 after two years as its Assistant Warden of Operations and continued there until her medical leave December 2007. Among her collateral service, she was appointed to the Governor’s Task Force on correctional planning.
   Additionally, she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Barbara Moore of The Villages, FL; sister, Deborah Hughes of St. Albans, VT; two brothers, David Moore of Winfield, IL and Christopher Moore of Scottsdale, AZ; 10 nieces and nephews; a step-daughter, Anita Edwards-Struewing of Virginia Beach, and a stepson, James Edwards of Rincon, GA and two step-grandchildren, Carolyn and Amanda Edwards of Rincon, GA.
   A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Farmville on Tuesday, January 29 at 11 a.m. A reception will be held at the parish hall immediately following the service.

    Patrick “Packrat” Morse

Patrick “Packrat” Morse, 57

   JANUARY 22 — Patrick “Packrat” Morse, 57, died Thursday, January 17, 2008 peacefully at his Tupelo, MS home after a brief illness. A Sacramento California native, he was born March 17, 1950 to Bebe Weber and Benjamin Wilson Morse. He was a US Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. Mr. Morse was a graduate of Longwood College in Farmville where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
   He worked in the cable industry for 15 plus years and most recently worked as a Sweep Supervisor at Cableworks Inc. of Dallas Texas. Acting was his hobby and he worked as Richard Gere’s standin double during the filming of the movie “Sommersby”. He owned and operated the store of his dreams, “Packrat’s Palace”, in Farmville. Even after the store’s closing, Patrick continued to carry out the mission of buying, selling, and trading goods the remainder of his life.
   Survivors include his loving ex-wife, Susan T. Morse of Pamplin; two daughters, Melissa Morse of Martinsburg, West VA and Katie Jones and husband, Keishan of Charlotte Court House; one son, Michael Morse of Raleigh, NC; his mother, Bebe Wilson Morse of Tupelo, MS; two grandchildren, Harmony and Autumn Jones; his fiancee, Patti Parker of Tupelo, MS; and his brother, Ronald Morse of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Wilson Morse.
   A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held on Saturday, January 26, at 11 a.m. at The Hitchin’ Post restaurant located on Rt. 15 S. Farmville.

   JANUARY 24 — Vincent “Wayne” Jackson, 56 of Farmville passed away Wednesday, January, 23, 2008 as a result of a traffic accident. He was born January 29, 1951 in Gouverneur, New York, the son of Lottie Mae Jackson of Star Lake, New York and the late George Jackson. He was employed by J R Tharpe Trucking of Burkeville. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Vietnam and was also a member of the Army Reserves.
   In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Kathryn “Kitty” Atkins Jackson of Farmville; his daughter, Kira Thompson and husband, Butch of Varina; two sons, Elliot and Joel Jackson both of Highland Springs; two stepsons, Michael Jarrell of Farmville and J. Phillip Jarrell of Richmond; four grandchildren, Zachary, Courtney, Venice and Paris; two sisters, Beverly Thornton of Star Lake, NY and Donna Pelno of Adams, NY and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and his aunts.
   A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 26, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice.
   Family will receive friends Friday evening 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
