Patrick “Packrat” Morse, 57

    JANUARY 22 — Patrick “Packrat” Morse, 57, died Thursday, January 17, 2008 peacefully at his Tupelo, MS home after a brief illness. A Sacramento California native, he was born March 17, 1950 to Bebe Weber and Benjamin Wilson Morse. He was a US Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. Mr. Morse was a graduate of Longwood College in Farmville where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.
    He worked in the cable industry for 15 plus years and most recently worked as a Sweep Supervisor at Cableworks Inc. of Dallas Texas. Acting was his hobby and he worked as Richard Gere’s stand-in double during the filming of the movie “Sommersby”. He owned and operated the store of his dreams, “Packrat’s Palace”, in Farmville. Even after the store’s closing, Patrick continued to carry out the mission of buying, selling, and trading goods the remainder of his life.
    Survivors include his loving ex-wife, Susan T. Morse of Pamplin; two daughters, Melissa Morse of Martinsburg, West VA and Katie Jones and husband, Keishan of Charlotte Court House; one son, Michael Morse of Raleigh, NC; his mother, Bebe Wilson Morse of Tupelo, MS; two grandchildren, Harmony and Autumn Jones; his fiancée, Patti Parker of Tupelo, MS; and his brother, Ronald Morse of Phoenix, AZ. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Wilson Morse.
    A Celebration of Life service (or ceremony) will be held on Saturday, January 26, at 2 p.m. at The Hitchin’ Post restaurant located on Rt. 15 S. Farmville.

Mary Hobbs Gemski, 68
Of Buckingham
Dies January 20

    BUCKINGHAM, Jan. 22 – Mary Hobbs Gemski, 68, of Buckingham County, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, died on Sunday, January 20, 2008, following a long struggle with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. She was born January 27, 1939, in Newport News, to the late Meedie and Mary Hobbs, and was raised in Hampton, graduating from Hampton High School. She married Joseph G. Gemski III on June 28, 1958.
    Mrs. Gemski has been a member of Beta Sigma Sorority since 1957. She was active in the Reading is Fundamental Program in the Hampton City Schools; she also volunteered at the local PBS station during their fundraising drives. She and Joe moved to Buckingham County in January 1998, where she was an active member in the Buckingham Woman’s Club and the Southside Community Hospital Auxiliary. Together with Joe, she was a member of the Buckingham/Dillwyn Garden Club, the Buckingham Historical Society, the Buckingham County Chamber of Commerce, the Pamplin Chapter of AARP, the Curdsville Community Center, and the Exchange Club. She assisted Joe in his membership in the Buckingham Ruritan, and they both administered the Tri-County Life Learners adult literacy program. Mary and Joe were named Volunteers of the Year for 2007 by the Buckingham County Chamber of Commerce.
    Watching her grandchildren grow and learn was a never-ending joy for Mary. And where you saw Mary, you usually saw Joe. Everyone who knew her was impressed by her kindness, goodness, thoughtfulness, sense of humor, and spirit. Her fight against her disease showed her strength and courage. Mary loved living in Buckingham County, and made many very dear friends here. She enjoyed singing, reading, traveling, gardening, and watching the birds and animals that were always around their home.
   She is survived by her husband, Joseph; her son, Christopher and wife Lisa, and her grandchildren, Justin, Christian, and Mallorie all of Chesapeake; a sister, Patsy Miessler and husband, Jim of Cumberland; nephew, David Sargent and family; and numerous cousins. She was predeceased by her youngest sister, Deirdre Sargent, who succumbed to the same disease in December 2006.
    Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 24, at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn. The Rev. Billy Swan will officiate, and friends and family are encouraged to speak their thoughts and memories of Mary. There will be a reception for family and friends immediately following the service at the Curdsville Community Center.
    The family has asked that remembrances be made to the Coalition for Pulmonary Fibrosis, Suite F, #227, 1659 Branham Lane, San Jose, CA 95118.

    January 22 – Rebecca Pocahontas Smith Davis, 96, formerly of Cumberland and Lakeside Village, passed away in Lutz, FL on Tuesday, January 15, 2008. She was predeceased by her her husband, Joshua Benjamin Davis, formerly of Dillwyn.
    Mrs. Davis was the daughter of the late Elizabeth Langhorne Vaughan and Judge William Morgan Smith of Cumberland, and the sister of the late Elizabeth Muncy, Nancy Hundly, Virginia Marks, Robbie Whitlock, Frances May, and Meriwether Smith.
    he is survived by her children, Robert Nicholas Davis, Nancy Vaughan Davis Rountree, William Morgan Davis, Ann Meriwether Davis Rao, and Lee Langhorne Davis; her sister-in-law, Barbara Hope Almond Smith; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
    A graveside service will be conducted by Dr. Bala Rao on Saturday, January 26 at 2 p.m. at the Center Cemetery, Cumberland Courthouse.

Emille Harvey Bryant
Dies January 18
In Maryland

   MARYLAND, Jan. 22 – Emille Harvey Bryant, widow of A. B. Bryant Jr., died peacefully at her home in Severna Park, MD, on Friday, January 18, 2008.
   Originally from Darlington heights, she was born April 23, 1916 to Chapman I. Harvey and Mattie B. Harvey.
   She is survived by her sons, Harvey Bryant of Severna Park, MD, and Andy Bryant and wife, Margaret of Phoeniz, AZ; two grandchildren, Beth Bryant and Drew Bryant of Phoenix, AZ; her twin sister, Ida Harvey; and sister, Mae H. Blank.
   Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Spring Creek Baptist Church in Darlington Heights with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Dies January 16

   TYRO, Jan. 17 – Lucille Sims Williams, 88, of Tyro, died Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Runk & Pratt Memory Care Center in Lynchburg. Born in Hosmer (Charlotte County) September 5, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Frank Gibbs Sims and Bessie Young Smith Sims. She was a member of Jonesboro Baptist Church and had retired as a nurse with Westminster-Canterbury.
   She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Edward Lee Williams of Tyro; two sons, Frank M. Williams and wife, Martha of Monroe, and Edward L. Williams Jr. of Granbury, Texas; a daughter, Donna Fitzgerald and husband, Tommy of Tyro; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be conducted at Jonesboro Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 19, by the Rev. Wayne Underwood and the Rev. Dr. Michael Fitzgerald with burial in Jonesboro Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m., Friday, January 18.

   JANUARY 15 – Brandon Thomas Davis celebrated his life from June 4, 1987 to January 10, 2008. He was born in Farmville and departed this life in Richmond, as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident on December 15, 2007.
   Brandon leaves to carry on his memory, his parents, T. Wayne and Teresa C. Davis, and his sisters, Tatum Alexandra and Kari Neal, all of Farmville, and Ronald and Kimberly Majors of Ocala, FL; grandparents, Clyde J. and Ressie A. Davis of Farmville, Thomas and Runell Nance of Melbourne, FL, and Jim and Patsy McGroarty of Richmond; aunts and uncles, Charlotte and G.R. Cyrus and Jack and Kim Davis, all of Farmville, John and Jill Fees of Lynchburg, Mickey and Tammy McGinn of Elon, NC, Brandon and Natasha Chernault of Richmond; cousins, Davis, Anna, and Tanner Cyrus, and Trey and Lindsey Davis, all of Farmville; Stephanie Fees of Lynchburg, Connor and Morgan McGinn of Elton, NC; and Anna Chernault of Richmond.
   Brandon was a 2005 graduate of Fuqua School in Farmville, where he was a member of the football, baseball, basketball, and golf teams. He attended Louisburg College, NC, where he was also a member of the golf team. Brandon was employed by the Carpet House of Farmville. He loved golfing, fishing, and hanging out with his many friends. He will be loved and missed by his family, and those that were blessed to know him will hold a special place in their hearts of the memory of his charisma, winning smile, and mischievous eyes.
   A funeral service was held on Sunday at Farmville United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with burial at Westview Cemetery.

Roger Deem Mullins, 63

Dies In Florida

   FLORIDA, Jan. 15 — Roger Deem Mullins, 63, previously of Farmville, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2008, in Inverness, Florida. He was born in West Virginia on March 27, 1944 to Dewey Mullins and Beatrice Deem.
   Preceding him in death were his brother, Carl Mullins, his sister, Phyllis McGuire, and his grandson, Jonathan Avery. Mr. Mullins is survived by daughter, Tina Rodgers and husband, Bill of NC, his former wife of 28 years, Linda Z. Mullins, mother of his daughters, Shay Wallace and husband, Dr. Eric Wallace of NC, and Shannon Avery and husband, Doug of MD; six grandchildren; brothers, Bob Mullins and wife, Joyce of NC, Charles Mullins and wife, Barbara of Appomattox and sisters, Jo Ann White and husband, Clifton “Buck” White of Farmville, Sue Hall and husband, Johnny of FL, and Shelda Coffey and husband, Ed of SC.
   For 30 years, Roger devoted his life to the service of his country while enlisted in the military, including two tours to Vietnam. After retiring from the Army, he resided in Florida until his passing.
   Mr. Mullins will be remembered as an adoring father, devoted grandfather, loving brother, and a loyal friend and mentor.

John M. Burroughs, 92
Of Dillwyn
Dies January 10

   BUCKINGHAM, Jan. 15 – John Mitchell Burroughs, 92, died in Buckingham County on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2008. He was the son of his late parents, William Webster and Josephine St. Clair Burroughs.
   Mr. Burroughs was born in St. Mary’s County, MD. At the age of six months his family moved to Alexandria, where he grew up. He attended Catholic grade schools and George Washington High School where he was a member of its first graduating class. He attended Columbia Technical Institute where he studied Architectural Engineering. Upon graduating he spent several years working with his father in his construction business in Alexandria.
   Mr. Burroughs enlisted in the Army in World War II and served in the Philippines where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. Because of injuries he was sent home in 1945. Shortly thereafter he married Elizabeth Ranson of Dillwyn, who was a teacher in the Buckingham County School system. They made their home in Dillwyn and he owned a construction company for many years.
   He then became Superintendent of LeSueur-Richmond Slate Corporation in Arvonia; was a founding member of the Dillwyn Fire Department where he served as Fire Chief for 12 years. He also served for 12 years as Scout Master. He joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary in 1975 and attained the office of Captain of Division III. He received many awards for training aides he made for boating safety and training classes. He was a 60-year Master Mason in the Masonic Lodge #315 in Dillwyn.
   In 1983 the Burroughs re-turned to St. Mary’s County, MD, and built on the grounds of “Waterloo”, previously owned by his parents. He belonged to the American Legion Post 221 in Avenue, MD, and the Seventh District Optimist Club. He continued active membership in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Avenue, MD. After the death of his wife he returned to Dillwyn in 2005 to live with relatives. He joined the VFW Post #1734 in Buckingham.
   Mr. Burroughs will be remembered as a talented, helpful and dedicated individual who served his country and fellow man well.
   He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Joseph and William (Bill), and his beloved wife of 59 years, Liz. He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Boteler of Alexandria; a sister, Elizabeth Cloonan of Canyon Lake, CA; three grandchildren, Betsy Loaiza of Alexandria, Bonny Watter of Kapolei, Hawaii, and Bryan Boteler of Alexandria; and five great-grandchildren, Leigh Ann Lopos, Sarah Watter, Neil Loaiza, Marc Watter and Karly Loaiza.
   Visitation and services were held at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Avenue, MD, on January 12, with interment in Charles Memorial Gardens in Leonardtown, MD.

   WYLLIESBURG, Jan. 15 — Ann Jackson Owen, 88, died Sunday, January 13, 2008. Born January 26, 1919, Ann was a lifelong resident of Wylliesburg. She was a graduate of Smithdeal–Massey Business College and was employed for many years by the Soil Conservation Service in Chase City.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Claude and Grace Robertson Jackson; four brothers, Paul, Robert, Judd, and D.C. Jr.; and her husband of 57 years, J. Jack Owen. She is survived by her sister, Grace Jefferson of Farmville; her daughter and son-in-law, Jackie and Bill Stallings of Richmond; two grandchildren, Bryce Stallings of Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, NC, and Brooke Stallings of Furman University, Greenville, SC; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
   The family will receive friends on Tuesday (today), January 15 from 7 – 8:30 pm. at Puckett Funeral Home.
   Funeral services will be held at Wylliesburg Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, January 16 at 11 a.m. with interment in the church cemetery. A lunch-eon will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Andrew C. Fulleman, 35
Of Keysville
Dies January 13

   KEYSVILLE, Jan. 15 – An-drew “Drew” C. Fulleman, of Keysville, formerly of Marlton, NJ, went home to be with the Lord suddenly on Sunday, January 13, 2008. He was 35 years of age. Born in Camden, NJ, he is the beloved son of Charles and Doris (Nee Stow) Fulleman of Keysville, and the loving brother of Robert Cain Jr. and wife, Ellen of Williamstown, NJ.
   He was a graduate of Cherokee High School in Marlton, NJ, Class of 1991 and lived in Marlton until 2004 when he moved to Keysville. He was a restaurant worker for Rockin Sam’s Restaurant in Meherrin, where he had worked for the past two years.
   Mr. Fulleman is also survived by his uncles and aunts, Edward C. and Susan Stow of Meherrin, Carol and Dan LaFon of East Windsor, MD, Robert and Mary Fulleman of Crescent Beach, Nova Scotia, Allen and Brenda Fulleman of Cedar Bluff, and 10 cousins.
   Relatives and friends are invited to a celebration of his life on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Crewe Church of the Nazarene, Lipscomb & Carolina Avenues, Crewe. Friends may greet the family following the service.

Virginia “Ginny” Rosen
Buckingham Native
Dies January 11

   MARYLAND, Jan. 15 — Virginia Estelle Elcan (Ginny) Rosen, of Carroll Lutheran Village, Westminster, MD died Friday, January 11, 2008 at the Carroll Hospice Dove House.
   Born March 3, 1924 in Elk Hearst, Buckingham County, she was the daughter of the late George Hannah Elcan and Margaret Virginia Gilliam Elcan. She was married to the late Carl C. Rosen Sr. who passed away in August 2003. They had celebrated 57 years of marriage.
   She was a graduate of Buckingham Central High School and a homemaker all of her life. Her husband's career with Leggett/Belks took them from Buckingham to Staunton and then to Westminster, Maryland. She was a former member of the Westminster Woman's Club. She and her husband were charter members of Piney Branch Golf Club. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge.
   Mrs. Rosen and her husband enjoyed their yearly trip to Florida each winter. When her husband was writing genealogy books, she became his proofreader. She enjoyed her first Wednesday of the month bridge group and her once a month Sunday bridge group. Her family was blessed with her love, devotion and humor. She was a lifetime Presbyterian by faith.
   She is survived by a daughter, Margaret R. (Peggy) Bair of Westminster and son, Carl C. Rosen Jr. and wife, Susan Grier Rosen of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Glenn S. Bair Jr. of Old Lyme, CT, W. Alexander (Alex) Bair and wife, Jessica of Westminster, and C. Coleman (Cole) Rosen of Roanoke, and five great-grandchildren, Alexi, Michaela and Landon Bair of Westminster and Reilly and Sonia Bair of Old Lyme, CT; sister, Margaret Elcan Lacy Taylor of Lynchburg; sister-in-law, Anna Burnett Elcan; brother-in-law, J. Cullen Rosen and wife, Sarah Sykes Rosen of Buckingham, and nieces and nephews, Ruth Virginia Elcan of Amherst, Massachusetts, Jane T. Mitchell, Anne E. Judd, George H. Elcan, III, all of Lynchburg, and Richard T. Thompson of Beaver Creek, Ohio. She was predeceased by her brothers, William Cleveland Elcan, Henry Eugene Elcan and George Hannah Elcan Jr., sister-in-law, Ruby Rosen Thompson, and nephew, Jeffrey C. Rosen.
   A funeral service was held at the First Presbyterian in Westminster, MD on Tuesday, January 15 with the Reverend Jimmie Schwartz officiating
   Interment will be on Wednesday, January 16 at 1 p.m. in Buckingham at the Buckingham Community Cemetery, with Quincy Worthington officiating.

John B. Wood, 98

Dies January 12

   BUCKINGHAM, Jan. 15 – John Burks Wood, 98, a life-long resident of Buckingham entered into eternal peace and joy on Saturday, January 12, 2008. He was born at The Wood House on October 18, 1909 to the late William Alexander and Parkie Geneva Burks Wood. He was also preceded in death by a devoted wife, Kish Spencer Wood and a daughter, Bettie Kish Wood; seven brothers, Thomas Edward, Rolfe Hill, William Alexander Jr., Frank Addison, Alex Park, Clarence Wilson, and Eugene Russell; four sisters, Minnie Alice Wood, Gladys Lee Ayres, Estelle Frances Wood, and Christine Geneva Coleman.
   Survivors include a son, John Burks Wood Jr., a daughter and husband, Mary Helen and Pete Gowin; four grandchildren, Russ Gowin, Will Gowin and wife, Leah, Kish Heslip and husband, J.B., and Michael Wood; four great-grandchildren, Gray, Mattie Kish, John Addison, and Mary-Sidney Heslip; a brother-in-law, Bruce Spencer; and a loyal and loving caregiver and family friend, Lillian Patterson.
   John, before his retirement, was self-employed as a lime contractor and farmer. He was the oldest member of Maysville Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. The family will remember him most for his ability to laugh at himself, for his forgiving spirit, and for his generosity to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund at Maysville Baptist Church or to Central Virginia Christian School.
   A funeral service was held at Maysville Baptist Church on Tuesday, January 15, at 2 p.m., followed by interment in Buckingham Community Cemetery.

   JANUARY 15 – Marion H. Gresham, 91, died Thursday, January 10, 2008 in Farmville. She taught piano for years and played the piano for Concord Baptist Church and Freedom Word Church in Appomattox.
   She is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Phelps and husband, Mike; son, Jack H. Glover of North Carolina; four step-children, James Gresham, Shirley Gresham, Marie Kaufman, and Tennie Bear; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services were held Monday in Freedom Word Church in Appomattox. Interment was in Concord Baptist Church Cemetery in Buckingham Co.

Mabel N. Nelson, 92

Dies January 13

   MEHERRIN, Jan. 15 – Mabel N. Nelson, 92, of Meherrin, died Sunday, January 13, 2008. She was the widow of Otis H. Nelson, and a retired employee of Craddock-Terry Shoe Factory.
   Surviving are two daughters, Frances Lenhart (Orell) of Chase City, and Patricia Hudson of Meherrin; a son, William A. Nelson (Patsy) of Meherrin; numerous grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by four children, James Otis Nelson, Otis Nelson Jr., Jean N. Donaldson, Margaret N. Hulett; and a grandchild, Terri A. Nelson.
   Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, at the Browning Funeral Home with burial in the Marble Hill Church of God Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends at the Browning Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 15.
