HAMPTON, Jan. 2 — David C. “D.C.” Rosser Jr.,
73, passed away at his son's home with his family by his side on Saturday,
December 29, 2007. He was born in Farmville on September 13, 1934 to the late
Mr. and Mrs. David C. Rosser Sr.
He attended Farmville High School and then continued his education
at North Carolina State College and graduated with a degree in engineering. He
retired from NASA after 43 years of services. He lived most of his life in
Hampton and was a well known business man.
Mr. Rosser is survived by his son, David C. Rosser III and fiancée,
Kate McLaughlin from Hampton; daughters, Deborah K. Bennett and husband, Danny
from Hampton and Alice Gail Rosser from Gloucester; nine grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and many friends and associates.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, January 2, from
6 to 8:30 p.m., at Parklawn - Wood Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 3, in Prospect
United Methodist Church Cemetery in Prospect.

Dies December 28
NORTH CAROLINA, Jan. 1 – Phyllis Jennings, 61, died peacefully,
Friday, December 28, 2007, after a long illness in Wilmington, NC. She was born
July 26, 1946 in Farmville, the daughter of William Jennings and the late Bettye
Senger Jennings both formerly of Farmville and Norfolk.
She was a graduate of Rantoul Township High School in Rantoul, IL.
She received a college education at Virginia Intermont in Bristol, ODU in
Norfolk, and Christopher Newport College in Newport News.
Ms. Jennings worked at Virginia National Bank in Charlottesville
and served in the Navy pursuing Journalism.
She is survived by her father, three sisters, three nephews, and
three nieces.
Family will receive friends Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 7
to 8:30 at the Shorter Funeral Home. Donations can be made to the New Store
Presbyterian Church.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 3, at the New Store
Presbyterian Church, Buckingham, with interment in the church cemetery.

NEW CANTON, Jan. 1 – Katie Hendricks Hatcher, 87, of New Canton,
departed this life in Dillwyn, on Wednesday, December 26, 2007. She is survived
by her five children, Elsie O’Neal, John Hatcher Sr. (Gladys), Joyce Webster
(Elton), Bernard Hatcher (Carolyn), and Sheila Booker (Bernard); seven
grand-children; 15 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews,
cousins and friends.
Her remains rested at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home. Funeral
services were held Saturday at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Cumberland. Rev. Dr.
Howard C. Cooper, pastor officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.

GLEN ALLEN, Jan. 1 – Clyde G. Gilliam, 75, of Glen Allen,
departed this life Wednesday, December 26, 2007. He was retired from the
Department of Motor Vehicles.
Mr. Gilliam was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde W. and
Laura A. Gilliam. He is survived by four children, Greg Gilliam, Chris Gilliam,
Susan Stocks, and Carolyn Robertson; 10 grandchildren, and five
great-grandchildren; sister, Mildred Hudson; and special friend, Velma Riley.

Norman L. Cordes, 90

Resident, Dies
SANDSTON, Jan. 1 – Norman Louis Cordes, 90, of Sandston, widower of
Jeanne Cordes, died Monday, November 26, 2007. A native of Haverstraw, New York,
he was a graduate of Marrietta College in Ohio and an employee of Koppers Co.
for 43 years.
He is survived by three children, six grandchildren, and one
great-grandchild. His daughter, Carol Cordes Edmonson, her husband, Randy and
their children, Caitlin and Benjamin, are residents of Prince Edward County.
Mr. Cordes was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who
enjoyed golf and wood carving.
There will be a memorial service at the Sandston Presbyterian
Church on Saturday, January 5, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow in the
fellowship hall.

JANUARY 1 – Maxine Ida Admire Smith, 85, departed this life
Saturday, December 30, 2007. A longtime member of Antioch Methodist Church in
Cumberland County, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cornelius Hubbard
“Neal” Smith.
Born December 13, 1922 in Kansas City, she was the daughter of the
late William Frederick Admire and Nora LeEtta Hile Admire.
She is survived by four devoted children, Janice S. Cooke and
husband, James, Arthur Neal Smith and wife, Karen all of Richmond, Danny Elton
Smith and wife, Sheila of Inman, SC, and Judy S. Lackey and husband, Joe of
Burkeville; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces,
nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 2, at 2 p.m. at
Antioch United Methodist Church, Cumberland County.

Robert K. Martin, 93

Dies December 29
PAMPLIN, Jan. 2 — Robert Kincaid Martin, 93, of Swan Rd., Pamplin,
died Saturday, December 29, 2007 in Lynchburg General Hospital after a brief
illness. He was twice married, his first wife of 48 years was the late Virginia
Parks Martin and his second wife was the late Oneeda Carson Thompson Martin.
Born in Appomattox County, October 12, 1914, he was the third of
seven children born to the late Edward Kinckle and Mary Adams Martin. He was a
member of Olive Branch United Methodist Church, a retired farmer and Grade A
Dairyman. He was a former member of the Concord Ruritan Club and participated in
the Young Hearts at Elon Baptist Church. In his retirement years, he took great
pleasure in producing a large and productive garden and orchard that he shared
with his many friends.
Mr. Martin is survived by two daughters, Anne M. Robinson and
husband, Richard of Pamplin and Luella M. Coleman of Appomattox; five
grandchildren, Donna R. Deaner and husband, Rodney of Appomattox; Beverly Kim C.
Horton and husband, Gary of Laurinburg, NC; Sally C. Selden and husband, Frank
of Lynchburg, Kinckle Robinson and wife, LeeAnn of Pamplin and Ronald M. Coleman
Jr. of Lynchburg; eight great-grandchildren, Mathew Hampton Horton, Benjamin
Michael Horton, Kincaid Martin Robinson, Jacob Coleman Selden, Miranda Kallan
Deaner, Nathanial Lauren Selden, Parks Bennett Robinson, and Owen Robert Selden;
two brothers, Beverly K. Martin and G. C. Martin and wife, Eloise all of
Gladstone; two sisters-in-law, LayFaye W. Martin of Gladstone and Louise L.
Martin of Appomattox; a brother-in-law, T. T. Martin of Appomattox; three
step-children, Shelby Harper of Lynchburg, C. R. Thompson of Rustburg, and Ricky
Thompson and wife, Nancy of Concord; seven step-grandchildren, Russ Thompson,
Chandler Thompson, Savannah Thompson, Janet White, Jimmy Russell Harper, Stephen
Harper, and Sharon Poach and seven step-great grandchildren.
In addition to his wives he was preceded in death by a son, Edward
Kinckle Martin, II; two sisters and two brothers, Marjorie M. Anderson, E.
Carter Martin, Sallie M. Martin and John A. (Jack) Martin Sr.; sister-in-law,
Ellen M. Martin and brother-in-law, Dave Anderson.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 1, in Olive
Branch United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rebecca Rumburg. Burial will follow
in the Swan Family Cemetery.

John A. Jordan, Sr.
DECEMBER 27 – John A. Jordan Sr. was born on
January 9, 1923 and entered eternal peace on Sunday, December 23, 2007. He was
born to the late Walter H. Jordan and the late Mattie Cobbs Jordan.
At the age of 18, he joined the United States Army. He served
during World War II, and after completing service to his country, he returned to
the United States and wed Eloise Lockett Jordan in 1950. Mr. Jordan re-tired
from Norfolk and Southern after 37 years of service. In 1955, he became an
active member of Peaks Baptist Church and was later ordained as a deacon. He
served as a Sunday school instructor, chairman of Deacons, and a member of the
Volunteer Male Chorus.
Deacon Jordan was preceded in death by a brother, Jessie Jordan and
a sister, Lena Jordan Lee. He is survived by a devoted wife, Eloise Lockett
Jordan; sons, John Jr. (Darlene), Larry (Evelyn), and James; sisters, Edna
Jordan Kennedy and Annie Maude Jordan Hammond, both of Newark, NJ;
sisters-in-law, Dorothy Jordan of Hampden-Sydney, Otelia Goode of Prospect, and
Dorothy Holcomb (James) of Farmville; brothers-in-law, Quincy Lockett (Lois) of
Prospect, Macy Lockett (Gloria) of Prospect, and Edward Lockett (Mary) of
Concord, NC; six grandchildren, Larry Jr., Shaquita (Dennis), Jonathan, Jason
(Virginia), Dennine (William), and Jessica; three great-grandchildren; and a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and church family; and a special friend of the
family, Diane Newman.

Carlyle P. Stallings, 92
World War II Vet,
Dies December 22
BUCKINGHAM, Dec. 27 — Carlyle P. Stallings, 92, of Buckingham, died
peacefully at his home on Saturday, December 22, 2007.
A World War II veteran who worked as an economic analyst for the
U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, D.C. for most of his long Civil Service
career, he also served his country on overseas assignments to Iran, Panama, and
Thailand. Buckingham, to which he retired in 1973, was the home-town of his wife
of 52 years, Frances Barrell Stallings. During retirement he made many
contributions to the community, including volunteer service for the county
rescue squad and public library. A quiet, gentle man, he loved nature and was
loved by all who knew him.
He is survived by a son, Alden, a daughter, Jean, and a
granddaughter, Jessica.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, December 28 at
Maysville Presbyterian Church in Buckingham.
Donations may be made to the Beath Animal Shelter in Dillwyn or to
Maysville Presbyterian Church.

Dies December 24
DECEMBER 27 — Clair Nicholson (Bud) Hume died at home in Farmville
on Monday, December 24, 2007. Mr. Hume was a decorated WWII Marine hero, was
retired from a 35 year career in sales, and was a loving father and devoted
husband.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Evelyn Caldwell Hume; son
and daughter-in-law, Clair Nicholson (Nick) III and Diana Hume of Michigan,
daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Mark Mordecki of New Mexico, daughter and
son-in-law, Merideth Hume and John Maxey of Michigan, daughter and son-in-law,
Angela Cannon and Anton Speelman of the Netherlands, and daughter, Dianne Cyrus
of Florida; six grandchildren, Anthony Clair Hume, Dylan Maxey, Alex Maxey,
Brittany Watson, Nathan Bankston, and Anoeska Speelmann; several nieces and
nephews and many other relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 28, at John’s
Memorial Episcopal Church in Farmville at 3 p.m. followed by a reception in the
parish hall.

Dies Christmas Day
DECEMBER 27 — Fannie Edward Bishop, 85 of Farmville formerly of
Lynchburg passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at Southside Community Hospital
after a brief illness. She was born August 17, 1922 in Buckingham County, the
daughter of the late Samuel Winston and Viola Payne Bishop. She was an active
member of Heritage Baptist Church in Farmville as well as an active member of
West Lynchburg Baptist Church for many years. After her retirement of more than
30 years in banking she became a dedicated volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
She is survived by five brothers, Roy R. Bishop, Kenneth R. Bishop
and Dean Bishop all of Richmond, K. Austin Bishop of Arvonia and Melvin F.
Bishop of Mechanicsville; three sisters, Annie P. Bishop of Richmond, Olene B.
Ragland of Madison Heights and Ruth B. Hoitt of Montpelier. She was preceded in
death by two brothers, William S. Bishop and Earl P. Bishop and her sister,
Virginia B. Wilkerson.
A funeral service will be held Friday, December 28, at 11 a.m. at
Heritage Baptist Church with interment in Buckingham Community Cemetery.
Family will receive friends Thursday evening 7-8:30 p.m. at the
Puckett Funeral Home and Friday morning 10-11 a.m. at the church.

City, and Jackie Lewis and wife, Joy of Chase City; sisters, Mary Earlene Cooper

grandson, H. B. O’Bryant; and a sister, Frances B. Ellis.
She is survived by three daughters, Marie Amos of Dillwyn, Minnie

Richard E. Trim, 83
Dies In Farmville
DECEMBER 27 – Richard Edwin “Dick” Trim, 83, of Farmville, died
Wednesday, December 26, 2007, at his home in Cumberland County. He was born
November 15, 1924, in Elmira, NY, a son of Charles N. Trim and Esther Spencer
Trim. He and his wife, Rosella Spacheck Trim, celebrated their 61st wedding
anniversary, December 14.
Dr. Trim grew up in Elmira but never received a high school
diploma. After serving in intelligence in the U.S. Navy for four years and
traveling worldwide he returned to Elmira.
He was a highly motivated businessman and with his wife’s support was successful
in a number of enterprises. With an I.Q. of 140, he became the first state
approved Swedish massage therapist, qualifying through a correspondence course.
As a child he was a Western Union deliveryman by bike.
At the age of 17 he was hired by a local print shop to set type and
became an accomplished commercial printer and engraver, making his own molds for
custom printing bags, tokens and paper goods. He returned to printing after
leaving the Navy, and attended night school and took correspondence courses,
earning a PHD in Theology, and became a master printer, and handwriting analysis
expert, working with the FBI and the court system.
Dr. Trim was also an accomplished self-taught musician performing
in public and in churches for many years, including performances at the Mormon
Tabernacle, Carnegie Hall and across the United States. His favorite instruments
were the organ, piano and accordian. He performed as the Old Circuit Rider and
in Civil War reenactments.
He was a Seventh Day Adventist and active member of Gutherie
Memorial Chapel.
Dr. Trim has donated his body to the Medical College of Virginia
for study in scientific advancement.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Albert
Kenneth Trim of Farmville, Richard W. Trim of Ithica, NY, and Charles Norman
Trim of Holiday, TN; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and eight
great-great-grandchildren.

Dies December 19
RICHMOND, Dec. 20 — Otis “Pee Wee” Lafayette Wright, 84, of
Richmond, died on Wednesday, December 19, 2007. Born in Cumberland County, he
was the son of Horace L. and Flora Wood Wright.
He was a racing fan, liked fishing, and was a wonderful father and
grandfather. He loved his ’69 GTO and gospel music.
Mr. Wright was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes C. Wright. He
is survived by children, Flora “Patsy” C. Warren, of Chester, Horace “Butch”
Wright, of Chesterfield, Joyce “Sissy” Eubank, of Richmond, and Raymond Wright,
of Chester; a special daughter, Debbie Wright, of Chester; five grand-children,
11 great-grandchildren; three brothers; and four sisters.
The family will receive friends at the Chesterfield Chapel of J.T.
Morriss & Son Funeral Home on Friday, December 21, from 6-8 p.m.
