   BURKEVILLE, Dec. 4 – Julian Graham Fowlkes Sr., 81, of Burkeville, passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at his home. He was born September 27, 1926 to the late James H. and Mabel E. Fowlkes.
   He was a rural letter carrier in Burkeville, Kenbridge, and Crewe, retiring in 1989 after 44 years of faithful service. He was a member of Burkeville Baptist Church where he served as deacon, for 46 years as church clerk, and numerous other capacities in the church. He was past vice-mayor of Burkeville and served on the Town Council for ten (10) years, chairman of Piedmont Planning District and member for twenty (20) years, past member and chairman of Nottoway Economic Development Commission, a member of Burkeville Ruritan Club, and a member of VFW Post #9815 in Crewe. He served in the U.S. Army 88th Division Army of Occupation, in Italy, following WW II. He was always interested in all sports and a strong supporter of VA Tech.
   Mr. Fowlkes is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Shirley; three sons and one daughter, Edwin N. Fowlkes of Tazewell; Judith F. Rice (Keith) of Clinton, TN; J. Graham Fowlkes Jr. (Suzanne) of Evington; and James Alan Fowlkes of Chesterfield; grandchildren, J. Hollis Rice of Clinton, TN, Nancy M. Fowlkes of Bluefield, and Meghan E. Fowlkes of Evington; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, James W. (Charlean), Eugene L., and Robert E. (Jean) Fowlkes, all of Burkeville; and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 2, at the Burkeville Baptist Church, Burkeville, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Rice.

Thomas "Cully" Dalton, 76
Dies November 29
In Virginia Beach

   VIRGINIA BEACH, Dec. 4 — Thomas Cullen Dalton, “Cully”, 75, was born November 26, 1932, in Richmond, and died November 29, 2007. He was one of the children of Dorothy Grizzard and Rufus Edwin Dalton Jr.; was predeceased by one sister, Nancy Lee.
   He is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Rev. Elinor Ritchie Dalton; a son, John Ritchie Dalton and wife and granddaughters, Parker, and Hayden; a sister, Jean Dalton Coggins and her husband, of Cary, NC; a brother, Rufus Ed-ward Dalton, and a former sister-in-law, Charlyne Murphy Dalton; nieces and nephews, several cousins, and a host of friends.
   He was born in Richmond, grew up in Portsmouth, where he graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. While there was a Co-captain of the basket-ball and football teams. He earned a BA from the University of Richmond, where he was on the basketball team; a MEd at William and Mary; and EdD at the University of Virginia.
   He was basketball coach at Churchland HS, principal at Deep Creek Elementary and Great Bridge High Schools. Later on he was Administrative Assistant to the president of Longwood College for 13 years.
   Mr. Dalton was a Mason, a member of Phi Delta Kappa Education Fraternity, and the “No Name Sports Club” in Portsmouth. He also belonged to Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, serving as Sunday School Superintendent for several years. Enjoying life, educating young people, and college sports were his main passions !

   NEW CANTON, Dec. 4 – Edith Windisch Shepherd, 78, of New Canton, died Friday, November 30, 2007 at her home.
She was born Sept. 7, 1929 in Austria, the daughter of the late Karl Huber and Margarete Windisch Huber. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. “Shep” Shepherd Jr.
   She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, homemaker and volunteer, having assisted with the Buckingham County Youth League.
   She is survived by a son, Richard L. “Lee” Shepherd III and wife, Vickie of New Canton; five daughters, Susie Trinkle and husband, R.L. of New Canton, Margaret Whaley and husband, Ernie of Cumberland, Rosie Butler and husband, Ernest of Scottsville, Ruby Massie and husband, Sam of Gloucester, and Sherry S. Ragland and husband, Kenneth “Brute” of Buckingham; 15 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
   Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, at Fork Union Memorial Cemetery, with the Rev. James D. Radford officiating.

   NEW CANTON, Dec. 4 – Virginia Mae Harris Sharpe, 78, of New Canton, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 29, 2007. She was born April 29, 1929, a daughter of the late Charlie and Edna Mae Harris.
   Mrs. Sharpe is survived by two daughters, Edna S. Smith and Alice Faye Bell and husband, Dana; two sons, Paul Harris Sr. and Walter G. Sharpe and fiancé, Emma Smith, all of New Canton; one brother, Luther “Sonny” Harris Sr. and wife, Nancy of Cumberland; three nieces, Bonnie Harris of Cumberland, Cynthia Hall of Lynchburg, and Theresa King of Appomattox; one nephew, Luther “Bubba” Harris Jr. of Cumberland; 13 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Sharpe was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Paula E. Harris; a daughter-in-law, Gracie T. Harris; and the love of her life, her husband of 63 years, Walter Minnis Sharpe.
   Funeral services were held Sunday, December 2, at Buckingham Baptist Church, New Canton, with the Rev. Richard Long officiating.

Sarah Eldred Terry, 59

   DECEMBER 4 — Sarah Eldred Terry, 59, of Farmville passed away Saturday, December 1, 2007 at her residence. She was born October 14, 1948 in Charlottesville, the daughter of Everett F. and Margaret Belchee Eldred of Radford. She was the wife of William Parker Terry Jr.
   Mrs. Terry was a graduate of Averett College where she later worked as an Admissions Counselor, and became acting Director of Admissions at the College. She then worked at the Fashion Post, and with the Chamber of Commerce in Farmville and finally as a Congressional Aid to Congressman Virgil Goode, managing his Fifth District office in Farmville. She was a member of the Averett Board of Trustees, the Longwood University Board of Visitors, the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce Board, Secretary for the State Board of Corrections, Chair of the Republican Unit of Prince Edward County, a member of the board of the Trans-Dominion Express, the Wilson Leadership Board at Hampden-Sydney College, she organized the Unity Walk in Farmville, was co-author of the Virginia Uninsured Medical Catastrophe Fund, and a member of the R. R. Moton Museum Board of Directors.
   Mrs. Terry was a longtime member of Farmville Baptist Church, an avid hiker and loved the outdoors and animals. She was a loving wife and mother and will be greatly missed by all her special friends.
   She is survived by her parents, Everett F. and Margaret Belchee Eldred of Radford, her husband, William Parker Terry Jr. of Farmville; her son, William Parker Terry III of Farmville and her brother, William Eldred of Richmond.
   A funeral service was held Monday, December 3 at Farmville Baptist Church with interment in Westview Cemetery.

   RICE, Dec. 4 – James David “Shug” Bowman, 75, of Rice, died Saturday, December 1, 2007 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Ferguson Bowman.
   He is survived by his son, David A. Bowman and wife, Janet of Rice; two grandchildren, Melissa Renee Fulcher and husband, Dale of Dillwyn, and Matthew Christopher Bow-man of Rice; sister, Inez Bowman Dix and husband, Earl of Keysville; two sisters-in-law, Edna Arrington of Farmville, and Bessie Bowman of Burkeville.

Louis "Lou" Hubbard , 88

Dies November 24

   VIRGINIA BEACH, Nov. 29 — Louis E. "Lou" Hubbard, 88, a resident of Bay Colony died Saturday, November 24, 2007.
   Mr. Hubbard was born in Farmville and after completing public schools attended Hampden-Sydney College for one year, then transferred to Eton College, N.C. from which he graduated with a BA degree in 1940. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and was enrolled in the Naval Reserve Midshipman School for officer training, and subsequently graduated and was commissioned as an Ensign in 1942.
   He was particularly proud of his Naval career, participating in the Normandy invasion on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He was the Commanding Officer of an amphibious LCT flotilla landing on Utah Beach in the early hours of D-Day. In recognition of his combat service he was awarded the Legion of Merit Citation, and was given a special field promotion to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander.
   After discharge from active duty, Mr. Hubbard earned a Master's Degree from the University of Virginia and was subsequently employed several years in the public schools of Virginia, both as a teacher and as an administrator.
   In 1954 he was hired by the Travelers Insurance Company, serving as the Sales Manager of the Norfolk branch office, plus several others, ending his 30-year employment at the New York City office when he retired in 1984. He then returned to Virginia and began a new part-time career as a state certified instructor in the required concentrated pre-licensing insurance courses, retiring from this in 1996.
   Mr. Hubbard was a professional musician, playing in many dance orchestras wherever he lived and he maintained his membership in the American Federation of Musicians. He was also a life member of the Jamestowne Society, the Navy League, the Society of Chartered Financial Consultants, the Virginia Beach Sports Club, and various other professional and social organizations.
   Mr. Hubbard is survived by his wife of 65 years, Katherine Irby Hubbard; a daughter, Margaret "Peg" Hubbard of Richmond; a son, Louis III and wife, Nancy and their three children, Nick, Blake and Kirra of Virginia Beach.
   He has donated his body to medical research and a memorial service will be held at H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 3. Following the service family and friends will gather at the son's residence at 829 Winwood Dr. in Virginia Beach.

Giesenhagen and husband, David of Louisa; maternal grandparents, William and Mary T.    Mr. Williams was active in the United States Army Reserves.

   ARVONIA, Nov. 20 – Virginia (Jenny) Mann, 79, of Arvonia, passed away at her home, Mon-day, November 19, 2007. She was married for over 61 years to the Rev. John E. Mann Sr. Together they served for over 52 years in the Gospel Ministry serving many churches in Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Sidney L. Sheffield and Dora Snellings Sheffield and was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers.
   Mrs. Mann is survived by five children, Gloria M. Baber and husband, Jerry of Batesville; John E. Mann Jr. and wife, Bonnie of New Canton; Eva M. Mann of King George; Dora M. Self and husband, Steve of Wingina; and Timothy Mann and wife, Kim of Greensboro, NC; six grandchildren, Jerry I. Baber Jr., Jason R. Baber, Paul Randall Carter Jr., Amanda Dale Carter, Katelyn Nicole Mann and Scott Carson Mann; a great-grandchild, Sayvion Bryce; and a Special Caregiver, Jill Goodwin.
   She was a member of Arvon Baptist Church and former owner of Mann’s Christian Bookstore in Dillwyn.
   Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Arvon Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
   The family will receive friends Tuesday (today) from 6 to 9 p.m. at Arvon Baptist Church.

   DARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Nov. 20 – Ollie Mae Wesley Wilks, of Darlington Heights, born December 19, 1912, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
   She is survived by a brother, Samuel Wesley, and a sister, Maddie Wilks, both of Brooklyn, NY; five sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
