   DILLWYN, Nov. 15 – Lance J. Woodson, 20, of Dillwyn, died Monday, November 12, 2007 in Richmond.
   He is survived by his parents, Robert Woodson of Arvonia, and Cecelia Lewis Woodson of Dillwyn; a brother, Lavente Woodson and a son, Natwan Z. Bartee/Woodson, both of Dillwyn; paternal grandparents, George E. and Jane C. Woodson of Arvonia, and maternal grand-parents, Ceasar Lewis of Amelia and Mary Lewis of Dillwyn.
   A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the Buckingham High School Auditorium, Buckingham, with interment in the New Store Baptist Church cemetery.
Friends may call at the Colbert Funeral Home, Thursday (today) and Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and at the school auditorium Saturday from noon until the hour of the service.

   BURKEVILLE, Nov. 15 – Craddock Hamersly Boswell, of Burkeville, born September 24, 1915, departed this life Tuesday, November 13, 2007.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, William Leslie Boswell Sr. and son, William (Billy) Leslie Boswell Jr. She is survived by her son, Charles Craddock Boswell of Burkeville; daughter-in-law, Robin H. Boswell of Blackstone; grandchildren, William Leslie Boswell III of Charlotte, NC and Lauren Brooke Boswell of Fairfax; a sister, Mary Sue H. Yancey of Harrisonburg; sister-in-law, Louise H. Boswell of Burkeville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Mrs. Boswell was a retired teacher, a long-time member of Burkeville Presbyterian Church, and a charter member of Burkeville Woman’s Club.
   Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, at Burkeville Presbyterian Church, 314 McClean Street, Burkeville, with interment at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Burkeville.
   The family will receive friends at the church Friday at 12:30 p.m. until the time of services.

Dies November 8

    NOVEMBER 13 – Edna Mae Yeatts Southall, 78, of Farmville, died at her residence on Thursday, November 8, 2007. She was born in Lexington, the daughter of the late Delmar Lee and Loletta Reed Hartley.
    She was a 50-year member of the Farmville Moose Lodge; held the degree of Moose College of Regent; was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Prince Edward Volunteer Fire Department, having served as a past president and vice president. She was retired as a seamstress from Amelia Dress Factory after 26 years.
    Mrs. Southall was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, Bill Yeatts, and lastly Paul Southall.
    She is survived by a son, Bobby Yeatts of Farmville; a daughter, Edna Ann Allen and husband, Charles of Dillwyn; a brother, Edwin “Buck” Hartley and wife, Margaret of Mechanicsville; nephew, Doug Jackson and wife, Kaye of Prospect; grandchild, Kim Cliborne of North Carolina; and a great-grandchild, Kayla Cliborne of Prospect.
    Services were conducted in the Chapel of Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home on Saturday with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
    Remembrances may be made in her memory to the Prince Edward Volunteer Fire Department or the Olive Branch United Methodist Church.

   NOVEMBER 13 — Mrs. Burnell Banton Amos, 91, of Farmville passed away Saturday, November 10, 2007 in Farmville. She was born April 11, 1916 in Buckingham County, the daughter of the late Alexander and Lillian Christian Banton. She was a retired store owner of Amos Service Station.
   She is survived by a son, William Dave Amos Sr. of Farmville; grandchildren, William Dave (W D.) Amos Jr. and wife, Ginger of Farmville and Vicki Johns and husband, Richard of Amelia; sisters, Gracie Banton Hundell of Richmond and Gladys Banton Adams of Cartersville; great-grandchildren, Alex, Chris and Emily Amos and Jason Covington, and numerous nieces and nephews.
   A funeral service was held Tuesday, November 13 at 1 p.m. at Cedar Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

   MIDLOTHIAN, Nov. 13 – Eleanor Wilkerson Blackwell Guthrie, 93, of Midlothian (formerly of Prospect), died Saturday, November 10, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Guthrie and daughter, Betty Perrins.
   She is survived by her daughters, Linda Wilmoth of Richmond, and Brenda Blackwell of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and her devoted friend, Pat Hardy.
   A graveside funeral service was conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday (today) at the Olive Branch United Methodist Church Cemetery, Prospect.

Charles Simon, Jr., 78
Of Meherrin
Dies November 8


   MEHERRIN, Nov. 13 – After a long illness, Charles August Simon Jr., 78, passed away peacefully at his home in Meherrin on Thursday, November 8, 2007. He leaves behind Doris, his wife of 53 years; daughters, Lynne O’Brien and husband, Danny of Alvin, TX, and Joanne Hardy of Meherrin; a son, Charles (Chuck) Simon III and wife, Julie of Meherrin; six grandchildren, Shannon Ringuet, Justin O’Brien, and Aaron O’Brien of Alvin, TX, Mendy St. Ours of Charlottesville, and Chase and Christian Simon of Meherrin; five great-grandchildren, Kody, Karsyn, and Kynley O’Brien of Alvin, TX, and Aesop and Leander St. Ours of Charlottesville; sisters, Betty Atkins of Dillwyn, and Bertha Washer of Roanoke.
   He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Upon leaving the Navy as 1st Class Petty Officer, he worked for the Virginia Railroad, for Virginia Crafts as a supervisor, and sold insurance briefly before co-founding Heidi-Ho in Keysville in 1976. He remained co-owner and vice-president until his death. He also served on the Meherrin Civic Club as treasurer and on the Welfare Board of Lunenburg County as a board member and later Chairman of the Board.
   Mr. Simon has donated his body to the Anatomical Society in the hopes of one day discovering a cure for the pancreatic cancer that caused his death. His ashes will eventually be scattered on his beloved farm in Meherrin as he finally will be laid to rest where he was born and on the land he tended so devotedly.
   A memorial in memory of Charles will be held at a later date.

   MANASSAS, Nov. 8 – Estelle Moore, 88, died Saturday, November 3, 2007 at her residence in Manassas.
   She was born August 19, 1919 in Dante, the daughter of the late James Perry and Clementine (O’Quinn) LaForce. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold Frederick Moore.
   Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Weaver and husband, Richard of Manassas; a son, Lawrence Moore and wife, Deborah of Fremont, CA; sisters, Goldie Cornell of Farmville and Bernice Maillet of Portsmouth, OH; four grandchildren, Brian Weaver of Woodbridge, Sarah Weaver of Manassas, Sean Moore of Fremont, CA, and April Moore of Fremont, CA; and three great-grandchildren, Alexis, Jackson and Grace.

   NORTH CAROLINA, Nov. 6 — John Nelson Harrington Jr., 69, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007 at Wake Med. He was born February 12, 1938 in Washington, DC to John N. Harrington Sr. and Vara Smith Harrington who have preceded him in death.
   He graduated from Farmville High School and Hampden-Sydney College. At Hampden-Sydney College he was a four year letterman in football and was named All-American in 1958 and 1959. In 2004 he was inducted into the football Hall of Fame at Hampden-Sydney. He attended business school at the University of Virginia, receiving an MBA. Mr. Harrington was a banker who retired as Sr. Vice President from Bank of America. He was an active member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. His favorite pastimes were coaching youth sports, gardening, and antiquing.
   Surviving are his wife, Frankie C. Harrington; son, John M. Harrington and wife, Cate Marvill of Asheville; sister, Dianne Harrington of Richmond; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Nancy Topping of Williamsburg.
   A memorial service was held Saturday at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. Burial was in the church urn garden.

   November 6 – Ruth C. Falls, 85, of Farmville, died Sunday, November 4, 2007, in Lynchburg. She was the widow of the Rev. L. B. Falls.
   She is survived by her daughter, Carolyn F. Shelton and husband, Gene of Tyler, Texas; sons, James M. Falls and wife, Karen, of Gulfport, MS; daughter, Shirley F. Robinson of Glad-stone; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Connatser of Dillwyn.

   NOVEMBER 6 — Franklin Alexander Bruce Sr., 91, passed away Monday, November 5, 2007 in Farmville. He was a retired businessman, former Shriner and Free Mason. Born in Prince Edward County on June 5, 1916 he was the son of the late Annie Gilliam and William Basil Bruce, a former Farmville attorney and member of the Virginia House of Delegates until his death. Mr. Bruce served as a pager in the House of Delegates while his father was in office.
   He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Frances Bradshaw Bruce, as well as three children, Carol Bruce Bachmann and husband, John of Nashville, TN, Franklin Alexander Bruce Jr. and wife, Janet of Blacksburg, and Tanner Bruce Cox and husband, Kevin of Richmond; five granddaughters, one step grandson, five great grandchildren and one sister, Nancye Bruce Noel of Farmville.
   A graveside service will be held Wednesday, November 7 at 2 p.m. at Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery

Ovella Hardy Williams


   NAGS HEAD, NC, Nov. 6 — Ovella Hardy Williams, known to many as Gail, passed away Saturday, November 3, 2007, after enduring a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
   Born on November 20, 1933 in Martinsville to Martha Marshall and Clinner Leon Hardy, her family soon moved to Danville where she graduated from George Washington High School in 1952.
   Ms. Williams is survived by her three children, Sandra Williams Wrench and husband, Blain of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Robin Howell Adami and husband, John of Southern Shores, North Carolina and Hamlin Williams and wife, Susan of Richmond and seven grandchildren, Mary and Tyler Wrench, Richard, William and John Howell, and Alex and Cullen Williams; a sister, Janey Lee Douglas and husband, Dick, and two brothers, Alvis Hardy and wife, June and Joseph Hardy and wife, Carolyn.
   After curtailing her college studies to start a family, she attended Longwood College and graduated at the age of 41. She worked at Longwood College Library for many years before returning to Danville where she worked at the Danville Community College Library until her retirement. She loved reading, oil painting, crossword puzzles, and most of all, her grandchildren.
   Her children would like to thank their father, Frank Williams, who selflessly took care of their mother, his ex-wife, for five years prior to her admittance into Britthaven Nursing Home. They would also like to thank the staff at Britthaven for their kind and constant care for the past six years. Lastly they would like to thank the staff at Outer Banks Hospital for their compassionate care during her final days.
   A simple celebration of her life was held at Townes Funeral Home in Danville on Tuesday (today) at 1:00 p.m.

   She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 17 years, Thomas W. Ranson; her daughter, Buffy Jo Mangus and husband, William Scott Mangus; granddaughters, Reece Willis and Avery Grace of Salem; daughter-in-law, Melissa Boyers; granddaughter, Brittany Murphy of Dillwyn; brother, William A. (Buddy) Pankey and wife, Betsy of New Canton; Charlotte P. Harper of Harrisonburg; George A. Pankey and wife, Susan of New Canton; three nieces, three nephews, four great-nieces, and one great-nephew.
   Mrs. Ranson was a devoted employee and respected co-worker at Kyanite Mining Corporation for 30 years. She served with the Buckingham County Youth League and Dillwyn Ladies Auxiliary.
   Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Arvon Baptist Church where she was a member, with interment in the church cemetery.

   NOVEMBER 6 – Adell Henderson Redd, 80, of Farmville, died Thursday, November 1.    Mr. Lewis is survived two daughters, Mary Earlene Cooper and Athalene Thomas of Farmville; two sons, Jack Lewis of Cullen and Jerry Lewis of Amelia; and 18 grandchildren.
