Dies October 29
RICHMOND, Oct. 30 —Albert H. "Al" Lancaster Jr., 82, of Richmond,
went to be with the Lord Monday, October 29, 2007. He leaves behind his wife,
JoAnn Lancaster; son, Daniel Lancaster; two stepdaughters, Betty Jo Raby of
Kitty Hawk, NC and Linda Napier of Richmond; one granddaughter, two
step-grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren; brother, Art Lancaster of
Florida; sisters, Louise Jenkins of Richmond and Jo Jones of New Canton; also
several nieces, nephews and many friends.
Mr. Lancaster was a retired auto mechanic from Whitten Brothers and
Southside Dodge. He was in the Air Force during WWII. Mr. Lancaster was known in
Country and Gospel music. His band, The Country Cavaliers, played in and out of
Richmond. He was on Dominion Barn Dance, also Channel 8 and in Farmville.
The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and
Wednesday at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where funeral services will
be held 12 noon Thursday. Interment will be at Dale Memorial Park. Pastor Kevin
Branham will preside over services.

OCTOBER 30 — Angus Y. (Bill) Jenkins, 81 of Farmville passed away
Friday, October 26, 2007 in Richmond. He was born May 31, 1926 in Richmond, the
son of the late Theodore Russell and Rosa Manor Jenkins. He was the husband of
Margaret B. Jenkins. Mr. Jenkins served his country in the United States Army
during WWII. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and a member of the
Masonic Lodge in Richmond.
He is survived by his wife, his children, Mike Jenkins and wife,
Elizabeth of Advance, North Carolina and his daughter, Letty J. Russell and
husband, Bill of Charleston, South Carolina; grandchildren, Chris Jenkins of
Canaan, New Hampshire and Jason Russell of Portland, Oregon; step- children,
Theresa Denaro and husband, Frank, Judson Hodges Jr. and wife, Barbara, John
Hodges and wife, Serena and Darrell Hodges and wife, Courtney all of Farmville;
step-grandchildren, Jessica, Mary and Frankie Denaro and David, Elizabeth, Grace
and Hayden Hodges; also his beloved pet dog, Sir William. He was preceded in
death by his four brothers.
A funeral service was held Monday, October 29 at the chapel of
Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Greenwood Memorial Gardens in Richmond.

PROSPECT, Oct. 30 – Mary Jean Donaldson, 76, of Prospect, died
October 26, 2007 at her home. Born March 19, 1931 in Washington, DC, she was the
daughter of the late Luther C. and Catherine E. Beamer.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Wesley
Donaldson Sr.
Mrs. Donaldson is survived by daughters, Hazel Heffner and Shari
Donaldson of Prospect; sons, John Collins Sr. and Wesley Donaldson Jr. of
Maryland; five sisters, a brother, 12 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Maryland.

Dies October 25
OCTOBER 30 – Anna R. McCrane, 87, of Farmville, formerly of
Philadelphia, PA, died on Thursday, October 25, 2007. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Edmond A. McCrane, and two grandchildren, Sherry Anne O’Conner
and Junior Williams.
She is survived by seven children, 31 grandchildren, and 34
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 8 a.m.
from St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Philadelphia with interment in the

Friday, October 26, 2007. She was retired as a legal assistant for the Ohio
Public Defenders Office.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. William Blottner; sons, Paul
W. Blottner of Los Angeles, CA, and Mark E. Blottner of Chicago, IL; daughter,
Mary G. McCarthy of Cleveland, OH; a sister, Pattie J. Scott of Richmond; one
grandchild, and two step-grandchildren.
Services were conducted on Tuesday (today) at 1 p.m. from Johns
Memorial Episcopal Church with interment in Westview Cemetery.

OCTOBER 30 — Harold L. “Dukie” Huddleston, 70, of Farmville passed
away Sunday, October 28, 2007 in Farmville. He was born September 25, 1937 in
Farmville, the son of the late Frank and Eva Maude Huddleston. He was a retired
electronic technician supervisor for the National Guard.
He is survived by his brothers, Thomas J. Huddleston and wife,
Rosie of Farmville, Clyde R. Huddleston and wife, Marlyn of Marietta, Ohio, and
Joseph L. Huddleston and wife, Frances of Farmville, a sister, Opal Huddleston
Jania of Farmville and numerous nieces and nephews and many friends.
A funeral service will be held Thursday 11a.m. at the chapel of
Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
Family will receive friends Wednesday evening 7-8:30 p.m. at the

Noah J. Templeton
KEYSVILLE, Oct. 30 — Noah Jackson Templeton passed away Saturday,
October 27 at Britthaven Nursing Home, Keysville. He was born March 17, 1913 in
Iredell County, North Carolina, the son of Thomas Allen and Margaret Stuart
Templeton.
In 1918, the Templetons moved to Virginia where they were tenant
farmers in Charlotte and Prince Edward Counties. Mr. Templeton served in the
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from 1933 – 1935 where he was a part of the
team building the Skyline Drive of Virginia. He and his wife, Hattie Hazel
Arrington, were married in 1938 in Cullen and in 1942 they bought a farm near
Abilene where they lived and raised their family. Mr. Templeton was a farmer all
of his life and for 30 years he drove No. 32 school bus for Charlotte County
Schools. He was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church for 80 years and a deacon in
the church for over 60 years.
Mr. Templeton is survived by his wife of 69 years, Hattie Hazel
Arrington Templeton, a son, Murray Milton Templeton and wife, Alice of Crewe,
and daughters, Hazel Harrison and husband, George of Farmville, Karen Gibson and
husband, Henry of Cullen, Linda McClung and husband, Ronald of Bridgewater, New
Jersey, Wanda Stewart and husband, Ned of Bangkok, Thailand, and Marcia
Templeton of Abilene; granddaughters, Camille Gibson Rabon, Melanie McClung Kay,
and Debbie Stewart Ziherl; grandsons, Robbie Templeton, Patrick Templeton, Nolan
Gibson, Ronald McClung, Mark McClung, and Martin Stewart; great-grandchildren,
David Templeton, Noah John McClung, Michael Templeton Kay, Seth Rabon, Hunter
Gibson, Taylor Ann McClung, Kristin Zieherl, Ashley Zieherl, and Jordan
Anderson; a sister, Violet Thackston of Charlotte Court House and numerous
nieces and nephews.

Nunzio L. Luggia, 82
Keysville Resident
Dies October 24
KEYSVILLE, Oct. 30 – Nunzio L. Loggia, 82, passed away at home on
Wednesday, October 24, 2007. He was born on September 14, 1925, in Plainfield,
NJ.
He resided in Plainfield, South Plainfield and Jackson, NJ, before
moving to Keysville in 1988. He was a 1944 graduate of Plainfield HS, where he
lettered in swimming, baseball, and football. Immediately following graduation,
he joined the Army Aircorps, receiving his training at Fort Dix, NJ, before
serving in Europe.
Mr. Loggia was in construction most of his life, before joining
Siemens in 1976. After moving to Keysville in 1988, he continued working
construction for Jimmy Elasser, until retirement. He was a self-taught craftsman
and enjoyed making many items of furniture for his family and friends in his
workshop.
He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and also earned a sixth degree
Blackbelt in Karate. He was actively involved in Civil War and Revolutionary War
re-enactments and was an extra in the movie “The Broken Chain” filmed in 1992.
He was a member of the VFW, Dunellen, NJ, and most recently an active Life
Member of Farmville VFW Post #7059.
He was predeceased by his parents, Mariano and Frances; brother,
Joseph; and sisters, Connie and Grace. He is survived by his wife of 24 years,
Barbara Loggia, and a brother, Morris and wife, Lucille; daughters, Frances,
Margaret, and Theresa; son, Joseph; stepson and daughter-in-law, Dave and Kim
Hunter; grandchildren, Jennie, David, Michael, Katie, Karen, Megan, Chelsea,
Jan, Jessica, Jill, Julie, Jaclyn, and Jodi; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The family would appreciate donations to The Charlotte County
Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 330, Keysville, VA 23947, in memory of Nunzio Loggia.

Robert James Meador, 87

Dies October 22
MEXICO, Oct. 25 — Robert James Meador passed
away on October 22, 2007 at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife, Maru
Meador; his daughter, Sandy Meador; his daughters, Barbara Bonham Meador and
Kathy Meador from his first marriage; and by his niece, Dierdre Peterson. His
sister, Marjorie Meinhard Meador, died one year ago, on October 24, 2006.
He was a native of Cumberland County, graduating from John Randolph
High School in 1937. He was the son of Arthur Marian Meador and Esther Meador
Stratton, a long-time correspondent of The Farmville Herald and a friend
of J.B. Wall, then editor. Mrs. Stratton is still remembered by many for her
varied activities in Centenary Methodist Church, including that of organist.
He was a graduate of Virginia Tech (Bachelor of Science in
Chemistry, class of '41) and of the University of Virginia (Master of Arts in
Romance languages, class of '51). A veteran of WWII, he served in the 62nd
Service Group (Chemical O. Hq.), among others. He was a retired
chemist/marketing/writer & editor and was living in Mexico with his wife and
daughter, since 1986.
Mr. Meador's demise came after a two month struggle with kidney
failure and aggressive lung cancer, during which time he was lovingly cared for
by his faithful wife, Maru and daughter, Sandy.
He was cremated on October 23, 2007 in Mexico City.
Bob was a great man, a wonderful husband and father. He will be
remembered always and missed by all who loved him.

17, 2007.
She was born July 27, 1913, in Bluefield, WV, the daughter of
the late Arthur P. Johnston and Bessie P. Johnston. She was preceded in death by
three brothers, Howard A. Johnston, Clayton P. Johnston, and Donald (Tuck)
Johnston; and two sisters, Dainese Merchant and Addle Saffer.
Survivors include five brothers, the Rev. John W. Johnston of
Alabama, A. Lester Johnston of Mechanicsville, Rudolf (Rudy) Johnston of
Williamsburg, Andrew P. Johnston of Farmville, and James Newton of Ashland, KY;
and five sisters, Lucille Staley, Audrey (Marshall) Williams, Catherine Wilck
all of Farmville, Mary Pennington of Charlotte, NC, and Bessie Hannan of
Richmond; 31 nieces and nephews.
She was cousin to the late Troy Johnston and Ruth Reynolds,
and Ray Johnston of Alexandria.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Cumberland
Presbyterian Church with interment in the church cemetery.

World War II Vet
Dies October 21
OCTOBER 23 – Elbridge Filmore “Phil” Martin, of Farmville,
went to his heavenly home on Sunday, October 21, 2007. He was born March 14,
1924 in Martinsville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roscoe and
Myrtle Handy Martin and stepdaughter, Janice Pence.
Mr. Martin is survived by his wife of 20 years, Violet
R. Martin; the mother of his daughters, Jean Camden Martin; daughters, Connie
McCraw and husband, Ed of New York, and Sue Newell and husband, John;
granddaughter, Amy Newell, grandson, Jeff Newell, all of North Carolina; sister,
Jessie Menear of Washington; brother, Lester Gunter of Virginia; stepsons, Tracy
Richmond and Ed Rogerville, of Virginia; four step-granddaughters; three
step-grandsons; and five nieces. Also his faithful caregivers, Carolyn Beverly
and Michelle Yoder.
Mr. Martin was a veteran of WWII and served in the 87th
infantry division and the 4th infantry division. He received the bronze star,
the Purple Heart, and several campaign ribbons. He served in St. Lo, France, and
was wounded in Percy, France.
He has been active in several military organizations,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and Military Order of the
Purple Heart. He was also active in the American Cancer Society for a few years.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at
2 p.m. from Farmville United Methodist Church. Interment to follow in Westview
Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening (today)
from 7-8 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home.

Robert M. Barrett, 83
FAIRFAX, Oct. 18 — Robert Martin Barrett, 83,
of Fairfax passed away Wednesday, October 10, 2007 in Farmville. He was born
April 17, 1924 in Long Island, New York, the son of the late John and Mary
Houlihan Barrett.
Mr. Barrett served his country during WWII and the Korean Conflict
and later retired from the United States Marines after twenty-seven years. He
was the husband of over fifty-eight years to Harriet A. Barrett.
He is survived by his wife; children, Barbara Rimorin of New
Jersey, Carol Ann James of Fairfax, Robert M. Barrett Jr. of Fairfax and William
S. Barrett of Farmville; grandchildren, Christopher Rimorin of Maryland, Jason
Barrett, Heather and David James all of Fairfax and Michelle Barrett-Purcell of
Cocoa, Florida.

Baptist Church in Camden, SC.
Mrs. Flora was preceded in death by her husbands, Hugh Stump and
Hollis Flora; brothers, James Lewis Snoddy Jr. and Thomas Bentley Snoddy; and a
sister, Ethel S. Page. She is survived by a stepson, H. B. (Kay) Flora II;
sister, Nellie S. Gregory; two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren; and

She was born February 25, 1904 in Lunenburg County, the first of 11
children born to the late Willie Alexander and Mary Elizabeth (Thompson) Marable.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Walter Horace Morton and
their daughters, Joyce Agnes (Booker) and Ruby Elcina (Robinson); sisters,
Jessie, Mattie, Betsy, Elizabeth and Lispa; brothers, William Goliath and Jack;
grandson, Tony Anthony Robinson and great-great granddaughter, Zoe.
Mrs. Morton is survived by a son, Deacon Willis Horace Morton (Mae)
of Abilene; sisters, Ruby Johnson of New York, Elloise Callahan of Victoria, and
Letha Marable of Chase City; six grandchildren, Rev. Lyle Elliott Morton (Vera)
of Radford, Horace Jeffery Morton of Chesterfield, David Steven Morton (Arnice)
of Upper Marlboro, MD, Roseland Elizabeth Booker of Dublin, Ohio, Horace Everett

James A. Harper Jr., 77
Farmville Native,
Dies In Richmond
RICHMOND, Oct. 16 — James A. Harper Jr., 77, of Richmond, died
Friday, October 12, 2007 after a long illness. He was the son of the late Mr.
and Mrs. James Allie Harper of Farmville.
Mr. Harper was a graduate of Farmville High School, the University
of Virginia and the T. C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond.
He was a retired Major of the United States Marine Corps.
He was a partner in the law firm of Hunton and Williams, where he
practiced law for 35 years. Mr. Harper was a member of the Virginia and Richmond
Bar Associations and a member of the Sons of the Confederacy. Mr. Harper was a
True Southern Gentleman. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
He retired in 1988 and suffered cardiac arrest in 1993, while in
the doctor’s office. His wife of 27 years, the former Dorothy Carter of
Cumberland County, cared for him at home, until four months ago when he went to
a Richmond nursing home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Sabra and
husband, John C. Willhite and Elizabeth and husband, David Lucchesi; sons, James
A. Harper III, Russell Harper and wife, Susan, John Harper and wife, Lisa;
grandchildren, Carnes and Caroline Willhite, Russell Jr., Jesse and Cabell
Harper, Gayla, Chris, Kemp, and Evelyn Harper, and Jim and Harper Lucchesi;
brother, Victor L. Harper and wife, Anne; two nieces, one nephew and two
great-nieces; stepchildren, Steve and Lisa Angle, Don and Sarah Angle; and
granddaughter, Melissa Angle.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist
Church with a private burial.

Of Farmville
Dies October 8
OCTOBER 16 – James Edward “Jim” Pence, 56, of Farmville, passed
away at his home Monday, October 8, 2007. He was predeceased by his parents,
Mary Katherine Roth and James Pence of Florida, and his beloved wife of 30
years, Janice A. Pence.
Mr. Pence is survived by his daughters, Shannon Redwine (Bruce) of
Virginia and Tania Horne (Michael) of Ohio; grandsons, Elijah and Aaron Redwine
of Virginia; brothers, John Pence (Carolyn) of Maryland and William “Uncle Bunky”
Pence (Kate) of Florida; mother-in-law, Violet Martin of Farmville;
brothers-in-law, Tracy Richmond and Edward Rogerville of Crewe; nephews, James
R. Pence of Florida, Lawrence E. Pence (Linda) of Pennsylvania, Anthony Pence
(Kris) of Maryland, Edward, John and Nicholas Rogerville of Crewe; nieces,
Adrienne Kuhar of Texas, Sharon Richmond of Virginia, and Emily (David) Williams
of North Carolina; as well as numerous grand-nieces and nephews, and special
friends, Mary McCabe and her late husband, Doug and Jay Duvall.
Mr. Pence grew up in Ft. Hunt and also lived in Ohio and California
in his youth. He was retired from Verizon, and was a computer enthusiast and
avid sports fan. He loved the Redskins and college ball. He collected Civil War
literature and memorabilia.
Since he was an animal lover, the family suggests a donation to
your local SPCA in his honor.
A burial was held at Westview Cemetery at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
A memorial service will be held at Farmville United Methodist
Church on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville, is in charge of
arrangements.

OCTOBER 16 – Helen B. Mallicott, 82, died Saturday, October 13,
2007 in Farmville. She is survived by her husband, Frank Mallicott and daughter,
Carol Fine of Tennessee.
Funeral services were held Tuesday (today) at 2 p.m. at Seventh-Day
Adventist Church on Rt. 45, with interment in the church cemetery.
Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, is in charge of arrangements.
