Bennie Franklin Elder, 94
To Be Held Thursday
CREWE, Sept. 18 — Bennie Franklin Elder, 94,
of Crewe, formerly of Lynchburg, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2007 at
Magnolia Manor Nursing Center, Americus, GA. He was the husband of the late
Elizabeth DeJarnette Elder.
Mr. Elder was born in Campbell County, August 12, 1913, the son of
the late Samuel B. Elder and Lula Mae Elder. He was a member of Fairview
Christian Church and a retired salesman.
He is survived by one son, Franklin Wayne Elder and wife, Ellen of
Americus, GA; a daughter, Linda E. Grounard and husband, Daniel of Crewe; four
grandchildren, Ashley Blair DeMuth of Fairfax, Adam Barrett DeMuth of Richmond,
Lori Elizabeth Elder of Waynesville, NC and Dr. Jeffery Wayne Elder and wife,
Christine of Birmingham, AL; a great-grandchild, Ava Catherine Elder; a brother,
James C. Elder of Lynchburg; and a sister, Nora E. Clark of Lynchburg.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at
Henderson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bruce Johnson with interment to follow
in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, Gladys.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday at
Henderson Funeral Home and Cremation Service.

Dies September 15
SEPTEMBER 18 — Mrs. Carrie Louise Dickerson, 90, of Farmville,
passed away Saturday evening, September 15, 2007. She was born November 16, 1916
in Madison, North Carolina, the daughter of the late Eschol and Savillar Gentry
Franklin. She was the widow of Joel David Dickerson.
She is survived by her children, Charles Edward Tweed of North
Carolina, Charles Dickerson of Meherrin and Nevada Guinn of Florida; brothers,
J.D. and Grey Franklin, both of Woodbridge and Dennis Franklin of North
Carolina; a sister, Gracie Giles of Rice; eight grandchildren and many great
grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Trinity
Memorial Gardens in Rice.
Family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at the
Puckett Funeral Home.

John W. Garrett, 90
World War II Veteran
Dies September 17
DILLWYN, Sept. 18 — John Wesley Garrett, 90, of Dillwyn, died at
his residence on Monday, September 17, 2007. He was born August 19, 1917 in
Appomattox County, the youngest of seven children born to William Samuel Garrett
and Addie Virginia Franklin Garrett, all of whom preceded him in death. On
December 29, 1945 he was united in marriage to Hazel Maxey.
Mr. Garrett was a veteran of World War II and retired from Uniroyal
in Scottsville in 1980 after 35 years of service. After retiring, he liked to
spend his time gardening and sharing vegetables with the community. He was a
deacon and member of Bethlehem Baptist Church and a member of Taylor Lodge at
Centenary.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Hazel Maxey Garrett and
many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 20
at Bethlehem Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery with Masonic
Rites.
The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at
Bethlehem Baptist Church, Dillwyn.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of
Bethlehem Baptist Church.

SEPTEMBER 18 – Ernest E. Hill Jr., 85, of
Farmville, formerly of Norfolk, died Friday, September 14, 2007. He was a WWII
veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Celina M. Hill; three daughters, Barbara
Smith and husband, Jimmy of Jacksonville, FL, Carolyn Palmertree and husband,
Ed, and Elaine Sraver and husband, Brant Sr., all of Farmville; seven
grandchildren, Tammy Hulett, Kenneth Palmer-tree, Lynn Senske, David Mosley Jr.,
Wendy Stillwell, Kimberly Uptegraph, and Brant Sraver Jr.; and 15
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, September 17, in the Briery
Presbyterian Church, with interment in the church cemetery.

For Fern R. Allen, 83
On September 15
GEORGIA, Sept. 18 — Fern R. Allen, 83, of Ray City, died on
Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at his home. Born in Sevierville, Tennessee, on
January 16, 1924, he was the son of the late Dayton and Edith Allen. He had made
his home in Lowndes County since 1957.
Mr. Allen was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and
the Vietnam War. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 28 years receiving medals
too numerous to mention. Mr. Allen was a member of the VFW, Fellowship Daylight
Lodge # 748, was a Ham Radio Operator and a Red Cross Volunteer. A Mason for
more than 50 years, he was Past Master of Moody Lodge #719. Mr. Allen worked
with the Boys Club Little League Teams and his favorite pastime was woodworking,
fishing and spending time with his best friend, Eddie Crowe. He was employed
with Civil Service at Moody Air Force Base for 15 years. Until his health failed
he was an active and faithful member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors are his wife of 58 years, Mabel D. Allen of Ray City; a
son and daughter-in-law, Michael R. and Roxann Allen of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee;
daughter, Gwendolyn Allen of Snellville, GA., a sister and brother-in-law, Wilma
and Willie Oertel of Farmville and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Saturday, September 15, in the chapel of the
Carson McLane Funeral Home. Reverend Steven Kegley officiated and a eulogy was
given by Joe Crow. Masonic Rites and Military Honors and burial followed at
McLane Riverview Memorial Gardens.

BEDFORD, Sept. 18 — Kathryn Margurite Soyars Grizzard, 86, of
Bedford, died Thursday, September 13, 2007 at her residence. She was born May 6,
1921 in Danville, a daughter of the late Rev. Henry Norman Soyars and Kate Tyler
Parrish Soyars. Kathryn was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and
a retired librarian. She earned a Bachelor of Science from Radford University in
Library Science and a Masters in Educational Media. She also loved cooking,
flowers and books.
Mrs. Grizzard is survived by her husband of 61 years, Mon-roe
Drewry Grizzard; two daughters, Kathryn Tyler Spradlin and husband, Lynn of
Bedford and Deborah Jane Pociluyko and husband, David of Forest; two
grandchildren, Drew Pociluyko and Tyler Pociluyko; two step-grandchildren,
Randall Spradlin and wife, Terrie of Blue Ridge and Karen Hannabass and husband,
Gary of Moneta; four step great-grandchildren, Austin Hannabass, Sierra Hanabass,
Cullen Spradlin and Gavin Spradlin; a brother, James Carl Soyars of Richmond; a
sister, Norma Watkins and husband, William of Farmville; and numerous nieces and
nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
sister-in-law, Ruth Brooks Soyars.

Buckingham County, the daughter of the late Charlie B. Allen. She is the widow
of Walter M. Toney.
Mrs. Toney is survived by her mother, Carrie Allen Chidester; two
sons, Michael Toney and wife, Lisa of Goochland and Curtis Toney of Dillwyn;
brother, Charles (Chuck) Allen and wife, Pat of Dillwyn; five grandchildren; and
a special friend, Mike Goolsby.

CUMBERLAND, Sept. 11 — George W. Rhoton
Jr., 55, formerly of Chesapeake, died Friday, September 7, 2007 at the home of
his sister. Mr. Rhoton was born in Coatesville, PA and was a veteran of the US
Army after 10 years of service. He was previously employed as a truck driver
with Golden State Foods. He was preceded in death by his parents, George W.
Rhoton Sr. and Helen Ruth Carr Barrett; and a sister, Vickie Carneal.
He is survived by three children, Lori Lynn Carter and Jason
Rhoton, both of Bonifay, FL and Elizabeth Holt King; a sister, Sharon Sturges of
Chesapeake; and a brother, Ronald Rhoton of Mechanicsville.
A celebration of life will be held at the residence of the sister
on September 22.

Resident Dies Sept. 3
MARYLAND, Sept. 6 — Mavis B. Graham died
at her home in Easton, MD on Monday, September 3, 2007. She was 91.
Born March 16, 1916 in Long Rock, Iowa, she was the daughter of the
late Ernest A. and Dorothy Stephenson Behrens. She was a 1934 graduate of
Fairmont High School in Fairmont, Minnesota and a 1937 graduate of the
University of Minnesota Nursing School. She served as a registered nurse for the
U.S. Navy where she held the rank of Full Lt.
Past PTA President in Liberty Guinn, GA, she was also very active
with schools in Atlanta when her children were young. She was an active
volunteer with Columbia Hospital in New York City and since moving to Easton, MD
in 1975, has served with the auxiliary of Memorial Hospital at Easton. Mrs.
Graham was instrumental in the development of the Women’s World War II Memorial
in Washington, DC. In her spare time she enjoyed golf and playing bridge.
Mrs. Graham is survived by her husband of 62 years, S. Lyle Graham;
four children, Dr. S. Lyle Graham V of Louisville, KY, Thomas Hardy Graham of
Wichita, KS, Dorothy Graham Redding of Baltimore, MD, and John R. Graham, PhD of
Farmville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 7, at 11 a.m. at
Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, P.A., Easton, MD.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 7 at 11 a.m.

For Robert W. Samuels
BUCKINGHAM, Sept. 6 – Robert W. Samuels,
of Foxfire Farm, Buckingham, died September 5, 2007 at the University of
Virginia Medical Center, following a hard fought battle with illness. He is
survived by his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth; children, Elizabeth D. Samuels, Amy
Arcand and husband, Neal, and Robert C. Samuels and wife, Melissa; and
grandchildren, Jeremiah Arnold, Grant, Jon, and Emily Arcand, and Christin and
Maddie Grace Samuels.
Robert was born in High Point, NC, in 1938. His family moved to the
Virginia Beach area in WWII. He was a graduate of Princess Anne High School and
later of Washington State University. After high school he enlisted in the
United States Air Force, and received his commission upon his graduation from
WSU. He retired from service in the rank of major in 1978. For most of his
military career, he was assigned to Air Force Systems Command, and worked in
research and development, and his special favorite, contract management. During
these years he and his wife acquired Foxfire Farm, and upon retirement, the
family moved to the “Farm” in Buckingham where they raised Christmas trees.
Robert took great joy in the farm both as a naturalist and outdoorsman and as
the “Christmas tree man” to three generations of visitors. He was a member and
lay reader and acted as a trustee at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Glenmore.
Robert served on the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors and had a lively and
continued interest in community affairs.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Church, Glenmore, on
Saturday, September 15 at 2 p.m. Interment will be private, at a later late.

CREWE, Aug. 30 – Eunice Queensberry
Staylor, 86, of Crewe, a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother, died
Wednesday, August 29, 2007. Eunice was the daughter of the late Henry Lee
Queensberry and Marion Gill Queensberry of Meherrin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Gates Staylor; a
granddaughter, Andrea P. Staylor; and two brothers, Garland Queensberry and
Shirley Queensberry.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary S. Harwood and husband,
Charles; son, John G. Staylor and his children, Jennifer S. Daniel and husband,
David, and Jonathan C. Staylor; son, Charles “Lowry” Staylor and wife, Linda;
brother, Floyd Queensberry, and daughter-in-law, Hardy Yeatts and son, Whit
Yeatts; and special friends, Hortence Boisseau and Ruth Cook.
Mrs. Staylor was a member of the Crewe Baptist Church and the
Grayce Verser Group. She retired from the Crewe Garment Factory and was a member
of the ILGWU/UNITE for 50 years. She was on the executive board of the AFL-CIO,
the South Central Private Industry Council, and the Job Training Partner-ship
Act Committee.
The family will receive friends, Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at
Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Crewe, where funeral services will be conducted
Saturday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m., with interment at Crewe Cemetery.
