Dies August 27

   Claudette Eva Richard, 75, of Farmville passed away Monday, August 27, 2007 at her residence. She was born March 22, 1932 in Gardner, Massachusetts, the daughter of the late Tranquil and Amanda Bourgeois Daigle. She was the wife of Alfred J. Richard.
   Mrs. Richard started as a Mathematics teacher, then she worked as a research scientist, and finally she was an activities director at a nursing home in Richmond and at Southside Community Hospital. She was a member of St. Theresa Catholic Church and was active in the Cursillo Movement.
   She is survived by her husband, daughter, Mary Frances Gray and husband, Stewart of Midlothian; brother, Donald Daigle and wife, Lorraine of Panama City, Florida; brother-in-law, Joseph Richard and wife, Gloria of Duneden, Florida and sister-in-law, Aline Richard of Gardner, Massachusetts; and grandchildren, Chelsea, Quinn, Skylar and Blayze Gray. She was preceded in death by a son, Pierre Alfred Richard, her half-brother, Albert Poirier and half-sister, Diana Servin.
   A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, August 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Theresa Catholic Church with interment in Westview Cemetery.
   Family will receive friends Thursday evening 7-8:30 p.m. at the Puckett Funeral Home with a service starting at 7:30 p.m.

   MEHERRIN, August 28 – Ronald L. Wood, 64, of Meherrin, formerly of Brattleboro, VT, died Tuesday, August 21, 2007.
He graduated from Brattleboro Union High School in 1961 and served in the U.S. Marines from 1961-66. Mr. Wood retired in 1998 from the U.S. Post Office after 35 years of service.
   He loved camping, traveling, gardening, and fishing, and RVing with his wife until they settled in Meherrin in 2006.
   Mr. Wood is preceded in death by his parents, Herbert A. and Retha Eddy Wood Jr., and a brother, Herbert A. Wood Jr.
   He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Linda A. (Harris) Wood; sons, Mark A. Wood of Orlando, FL, and Michael J. Wood and wife, Gena of Chicago, IL; four grandchildren, Karina Wood, Sarah Wood, and Michael Ryan Wood, all of Chicago, IL and Krystle Skye Wood of Peach City, GA; nieces and nephews.
   A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 15, at 2 p.m. at New Life Assembly of God. Services will be October 13 in Brattleboro, VT.

  BUCKINGHAM, August 28 – David Elwood “Doc” Boyers, of Buckingham, died Thursday, August 23, 2007. He was born June 1, 1923 in Keezletown, the son of the late Claude and Beulah Boyers. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Will Boyers.
  Mr. Boyers is survived by his wife, Kitty T. Boyers; daughter, Gloria B. Shull and husband, Bill of Mt. Crawford; sons, Paul D. Boyers and wife, Beverly, and Sterling F. Boyers and wife, Dawn, both of Dillwyn; brother, Claude W. Boyers and wife, Pearl of Mt. Crawford; nephew, Ronald M. Boyers and wife, Susan of Oakland, CA; grand-daughter-in-law, Melissa Boyers and step great-granddaughter, Brittany Murphy; grandchildren, Buffy and Scott Mangus, Grattan Shull, Samantha Pankey, Adam Pankey, Daniel Boyers, and Taylor Boyers; and great-granddaughters, Reese Willis and Avery Grace Mangus.

  Mr. Bragg was a Decorated World War II veteran and Purple Heart Recipient.

  ARIZONA, Aug. 28 – Robert E. Jamerson, 43, formerly of Farmville, died Monday, August 13, 2007 in Mesa, Arizona. He was born April 22, 1964, the son of Andrew W. Jamerson of Powhatan, and the late Katherine M. Jamerson of Johnstown, PA.
  He was preceded in death by his mother, and brother, Alan Jamerson.
  Mr. Jamerson is survived by sister, Pamela Jamerson of Carrabelle, FL; brothers, Andrew F. Jamerson of Richmond, and Terry W. Jamerson of Johns-town, PA; and eight nieces and nephews.

  DILLWYN, Aug. 28 – James Meliford (Tinker) Dunkum, 73, of Dillwyn, died Sunday, August 26, 2007 at his home. He was born April 14, 1934 in Buckingham Co., the son of the late John J. Dunkum and Mabel Newton Dunkum.
  He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Hudgins Dunkum; sisters, Mabel Wilkerson of Farmville and Marjorie Lahmon of Richmond; step-mother, Clarice White and husband, Sam of Colonial Heights.
  He was a retired diesel mechanic with Mack Trucking Co. with 32 years of service and a Navy veteran.
  Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in the Hudgins Family Cemetery.
  The family will receive friends Tuesday (today) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

   AUGUST 28 – Dorothy (Kitty) B. Brinkley, 79, of Farmville, died Friday, August 24, 2007 in Farmville.
  She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Sayer and husband, Tommy of Farmville; grand-daughter, Jessica Tibbs and husband, Jason of Powhatan; great-granddaughter, Kayla Tibbs; and numerous close friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry L. Brinkley Jr. and son, Harry L. Brinkley III.

Robert ‘Pete’ Oliver, 73

Dies August 23

  AUGUST 28 – Robert Edward “Pete” Oliver, 73, of Farmville, passed away on Thursday, Au-gust 23, 2007 at the Hospice Center of Hunter Holmes McGuire Veteran’s Hospital in Richmond. He was the son of the late Otto McRoy and Bessie Mae (Mann) Oliver.
   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas “T.W.” Oliver and a sister, Margaret Wilson.
   Survivors include former wife, Carolyn Harper; sons, Jon K. and wife, Gail; Michael S. and wife, Judy; Derek L. and wife, Debbie; Darryl B. and wife, Caryl; Daniel M.O. and wife, Teresa; and Jason D. and wife, Lynn; nine grandchildren, Jessica, Nik, Danielle, Ben, Marc, Jordan, Matthew, Johanna, and Alex Oliver; sisters, Ruth Hudson, Frances Easter and husband, Clarence, Mildred Robertson; and sister-in-law, Gayle Oliver.
   He served in the Army from 1954-56. He was well known in the Farmville community because of his work as a master electrician, plumber and refrigeration technician. His uncanny ability to remember names, dates and events, resulted in many interesting conversations. Mr. Oliver will long be remembered for his quick-witted humor and antics.

   CUMBERLAND, August 23 — Gladys Ruble Foster, 93, formerly of Cumberland, died Tuesday, August 21, 2007. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Leslie and Beulah Loope Ruble; husband, Lloyd W. Foster; brothers, Arnold Lee Ruble and Ralph Leslie (Emily) Ruble.
   She was a member of the Fitzgerald Memorial Baptist Church of Cumberland and a retired teacher with over 30 years of service.
   Mrs. Foster is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Ben Sprinkel of Fincastle; Carolyn and Bob Coffman of Smith Mountain Lake; sister-in-law, Martha Ruble of Buchanan; nephew, Benja (Marie) Sprinkel; and niece, Judy (Juan) Barr.
   Funeral Services will be held Friday, August 24, at 11 am in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with the Rev. Juan Barr officiating with interment in the Wheatland Lutheran Church Cemetery.

   PROSPECT, August 21 – David Christian Scruggs, 85, of Prospect, died Sunday, August 19, 2007 at his residence. He was retired with 45 years of service from Prince Edward Mills.
   Mr. Scruggs is survived by his wife, Ivor Adams Scruggs of Prospect; a daughter, Shirley Childress and husband, Leighton of Lynchburg; son, David Terry Scruggs and wife, Denise of Forest; three grandsons, Allen Scruggs and Edward Christian Kelly, both of Prospect, and David Brandon Scruggs of Forest; granddaughter, Christina S. Pettersen and husband, Tait of Roanoke; great-granddaughters, Haile Pettersen and Keria Pettersen of Roanoke, and Jennifer Kress of Appomattox; two wonderful loving sisters, Gladys Fulcher and Edna Finch of Prospect; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by sisters, Louise Scruggs and Helen Wilkerson; brothers, Clarence Scruggs, Curtis Scruggs, Marshall Scruggs, George Scruggs, and Roy Scruggs.
   Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 21, at the Olive Branch United Methodist Church, Prospect, with interment in the church cemetery.

   BUCKINGHAM, August 21 – John Carroll ‘Johnny’ Wiseman, 63, of Buckingham, died August 17, 2007. He was the son of the late Clifton and Florence Wiseman.
   Mr. Wiseman is survived by his wife of 43 years, Joyce D. Wiseman; daughters, Debbie Wiseman of Powhatan, Angie Overstreet of Keysville, and Wendy Posenau of Amelia; sisters, Pat Kite of Richmond and Sheila Austin of North Carolina; one niece and two nephews.
   He was a longtime member of Antioch-Union Baptist Church. He was employed for eight years with Adams Oil Co. and 32 years with Virginia Department of Transportation, serving the last 15 years as a devoted and respected superintendent of maintenance. Johnny was greatly known for his quick wit and wonderful humor which will not only be missed by his family but an entire community.
   Services were held Monday at Antioch-Union Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

   AUGUST 21 — Dorothy Caldwell Lafoon, 79, of Farmville passed away Saturday, August 18, 2007, in Richmond. She was born November 8, 1927, the daughter of the late Joseph and Nannie Cheatham Caldwell. She was the widow of Alwyn Otis Lafoon Jr.
   Mrs. Lafoon retired from school teaching after nearly twenty years, and was a member of Farmville United Methodist Church.
   She is survived by her children, Susan Lafoon St. John and husband, James of Keysville and Keith R. Lafoon and wife, Leslie of Farmville; brother, Thomas Caldwell and wife, Betty of Smithfield; sister, Mary Hoover and husband, Levin of Eastern Shore; grandchildren, Hailey Samford, Paul Trent and Danielle Kelley and great-grandchild, Sean Kelley.

   PROSPECT, August 21 – Mary Winfree Hendricks, 97, widow of Reverend Hayward J. Hendricks, of Prospect, died at her home on Saturday, August 10, 2007.
   She is survived by two daughters, Mable Jones and Phyllis Ward; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; two de-voted sons-in-law, Fred Jones and Ronald Ward; and a host of other relatives and friends.
   Funeral services were held at Sulphur Spring Baptist Church on Friday, August 17, with interment in the church cemetery.

   AUGUST 21 – Mrs. Mary Ellen Petty Chapman died Thursday, August 16, 2007 in Farmville. She was born July 23, 1925 in Charlotte County.
   She was the daughter of the late Elliott Linus and Florrie Mason Petty, and the widow of William D. Chapman.
   Mrs. Chapman, a graduate of State Teachers College (Longwood University), taught school for 36 years in Charlotte, Cumberland and Prince Edward Counties. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Farmville.
   She is survived by two sisters-in-law, Betty Reynolds Petty of Red House, and Lorraine Smith Chapman of Harrison-burg; a brother-in-law, Fred B. Chapman; 10 nieces and nephews; and 13 great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Linus Page Petty.
   A memorial service was held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Heritage Baptist Church.

Dies Tuesday

   AUG. 16 – Charles M. Carter, 86, died August 14, 2007 in Farmville. He was born in Buckingham County, the son of Merrie Word Carter and James Nathaniel Carter.
   Mr. Carter is survived by his wife of nearly 59 years, Margaret S. Carter of Farmville; two sons, Charles M. Carter Jr. and wife, Karen of Richmond, and Michael S. Carter and wife, Brenda of Richmond; two brothers, Ray Carter and wife, Jean of Uriah, Alabama, and Robert W. Carter and wife, Betty Jo of Farmville; one sister, Evelyn C. Cannon of Bristol, Tennessee; four grand-children, six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, James N. Carter Jr., Earl H. Carter, John B. Carter, and George W. Carter.
   He graduated from Curdsville High School and VPI in 1942; then joining the Marines serving in the South Pacific during World War II. He received four Battle stars, three presidential unit citations, and Purple Heart in battles on the following Islands: Taraya, Saipan, Tinnian, and Okinawa. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain.
   After the war he opened a seed and fertilizer business on North Street at the Middle Warehouse, which was one of the three major tobacco ware-houses in Farmville. As owner of the Middle Warehouse, this be-came his office for over 50 years and he personally knew most of the farmers in Buckingham, Cumberland, Prince Edward, and neighboring counties. He also worked for Virginia Dark Fired Tobacco Association.
   Mr. Carter was an avid golfer and enjoyed talking politics with his many, many friends.
   He was a member of Farmville Presbyterian Church where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 18, with burial in Westview Cemetery.
   Memorials may be made to Farmville Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Virginia, or a charity of your choice.
