HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, July 19 — Adjunct
Associate Professor of Mathematics Leon McClain Cohen, 44, died at his
Hampden-Sydney home on Monday, July 16, 2007 of complications related to
pancreatic cancer.
Lee was born August 21, 1962, in Covington, Georgia. He earned an
undergraduate degree from Emory University in 1983, and, in 1986, a Master’s
degree in mathematics from the University of Virginia. In that same year, 1986,
he began teaching mathematics at Hampden-Sydney College. Over the course of his
21 years at the College, Lee proved to be an excellent and much-revered
professor, colleague, and community member. He held numerous key positions at
the College, including chair of the Academic Affairs Committee and of the
Lectures and Programs Committee; Associate Director and Interim Director of the
Honors Program; and faculty secretary of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership society.
In 2002, he received the Thomas E. Crawley Award for devoted service to the
College. He also received numerous teaching awards including the Cabell Award
for Distinguished Teaching and the Fuqua Award for Excellence in Teaching. He
was specially honored by the graduating classes of 2005 and 2007.
Lee served the community at large as a board member of the Esther
Thomas Atkinson Museum of Hampden-Sydney, of the Prince Edward Public School
Endowment (PEPSE), and of the Farmville Area Community Emergency Services
(FACES). He also served as a tutor in the Prince Edward County VICTORS Literacy
training program.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Philip S. Cohen and Mary
T. Cohen. He is survived by his brother, Philip E. Cohen, of Melbourne, FL, and
his uncle, George L. Cohen, of Atlanta, GA. He will be sadly missed by numerous
colleagues, friends, and students, as well.
The family received visitors at Johns Memorial Church parish house
from 7 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, and a memorial service was held on
Thursday, at 2 p.m., also at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church. A graveside
service will be held in Covington, GA, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 21. Later in
the fall, Hampden-Sydney College will hold an additional memorial service.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to
Hampden-Sydney College, directed to the Lee McClain Cohen Endowed Library Fund.

PROSPECT, July 19 – Mrs. Mamie Wright
Harris died on July 10, 2007, at her home in Prospect.
She was the mother of four sons, Thomas Edmonds of Clifton, NJ,
Arthur Edmonds of Passaic, NJ, Travis Harris Jr. of Prospect, and Nathaniel
Harris of Fredericksburg; a daughter, Annie Bateman of Concord; 12
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; two
sisters, Pauline Shearer of Lynchburg and Thelma Allen Randolph of Farmville;
four devoted nephews and nieces, Glento, James, Sylvia, and Priscilla; and a
host of other nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 14, from the Kingdom
Hall of Jehovah Witness, with interment in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in
Farmville.

BUCKINGHAM, July 17 – Barbara
Shoemaker Bryant, of Buckingham, died Saturday, July 14, 2007, at the age of 80,
after a long illness.
She was the daughter of the late John Edmund Shoemaker and Lillian
Sprouse Shoemaker.
Mrs. Bryant was preceded in death by a brother, Edmond E.
Shoemaker, and sisters, Ernestine Shoemaker Crews and Evelyn Shoemaker
Huddleston.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Page Bryant; a
daughter, Susan Bryant Gunter; son, Bradley Wayne Bryant and wife, Connie; one
granddaughter, Casey Page Gunter; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Bryant worked 46 years for Buckingham County Schools, 44
of those years as secretary to the superintendent. She was a member of Trinity
Methodist Church.
The family wishes to thank the kind and compassionate people
at Hospice of Central Virginia who took such excellent care of her.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 16, at Dunkum Funeral
Home, Dillwyn.

Dies In Raleigh, NC
CUMBERLAND, July 17 — Mildred Arnetha
Holcomb Brown, the daughter of the late Robert Lee, and Maria Coy Holcomb, was
born in Cumberland County on February 23, 1912. She departed this life quietly
on July 13, 2007 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 19, at 1 p.m. at
Midway Baptist Church, Cumberland, with interment in the church cemetery.
Ms. Brown spent her life serving her family, her community, her
church, and her students. For 47 years she used her talents to educate students,
refusing to give up on even one. During those years, she touched the lives of
many young people, always encouraging them to “strive for the best”. She was
also involved in several organizations, such as: the Voters Registration
Organization, the NAACP, the Women’s Missionary and Educational Association, the
Cumberland Historical Society, the American Association of Retired Persons, and
the Virginia Education Association. She is listed in Who’s Who in Virginia,
Community Leaders of Virginia, and Who’s Who among Virginia State Graduates.
Education was always an important part of Arnetha’s life. She
completed her early education at Hawk School and the Cumberland Training School
where she graduated as Valedictorian of her high school class. Determined to
pursue her passion for education, she enrolled in Virginia State University
where she obtained a BS degree in Education. She then furthered her education at
Columbia University in New York, NY, where she obtained a master’s degree in
Child Development. She also attended Virginia Union University in Richmond, and
University of Maryland, College Park.
Arnetha left an imprint on every life that she touched. Her easy
smile, her soft voice and her caring and giving spirit will always be
remembered, but ultimately it is the contributions that she made to her fellow
man that will be her legacy.

Dorothy Andrews Glenn, 95, passed away
peacefully at her home in Prospect on Saturday morning July 7, 2007. She was the
wife of Joseph Foster Glenn, who passed away on November 3, 2006 also at the age
of 95. The Glenns celebrated 70 years of marriage last year. They are survived
by sons, Richard Foster Glenn of Northport, Alabama and Stephen Kyle Glenn of
San Francisco, California.
A memorial service for Mrs. Glenn will be held at the Prospect
Methodist Church at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 13 followed by double interment of
ashes of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn in the church cemetery. Family and friends are
invited to a reception at the Glenn home in Prospect following the service.

Dies July 8
APPOMATTOX, July 10 — The Honorable Harry
Gordon Lawson Sr., 75, of Appomattox, died Sunday, July 8, 2007 at his
residence. He was the husband of the late Louise Burnett Lawson.
Born in Lynchburg, September 8, 1931, Harry was the fourth son of
John Raymond and Rachel Ferguson Lawson. He graduated from Appomattox High
School in 1950, then in 1951 he and his cousin, Samuel Ferguson, joined the
United States Navy, where for four years he proudly served his country. In 1958,
he received a BS degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia and earned
his law degree from the University’s School of Law in 1961. After several years
of private practice, he was named Commonwealth Attorney for the County of
Appomattox in 1964, and subsequently served two full terms in that office.
Community service was a natural way of life for Harry Gordon,
therefore it was only natural for him to join his local Woodmen Lodge Camp 71,
where he became extensively involved with Woodmen Activities. He stated many
times over his lifetime that Woodmen stood for everything he believed in and for
what made this country great, “Belief in God, belief in country, and belief in
family.” Throughout his Woodmen career Harry served at local, state, and
national levels, including National Sentry, National Watchman, National Trustee
and Chairman of the Trustees. In July 1971, he accepted the legal position of
Associate General Counsel for the Woodmen of the World Home Office in Omaha,
Nebraska and held that position for two years before returning to Appomattox and
establishing a private practice.
In 1987, he was appointed judge of the Juvenile and Domestic
Relations court for the 10th Judicial Circuit, comprised of the counties of
Appomattox, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland and Prince Edward. After eight
years of public ser-vice he retired on July 1, 1995.
Judge Lawson was active in the Appomattox Democratic Party, served as the party
chairman, chairman of the 18th Senatorial Democratic Committee, Chairman of the
59th House of Delegates Democratic Committee, and had been a member of the
Virginia Democratic State Central Committee. He was a member of Memorial United
Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and had served as a member and
chairman of the Administrative Board. He was past president of the Junior
Chamber of Commerce and the Jaycees, served on the board of directors of the
Virginia YMCA and Fidelity National Bank, a member and one of the founders of
Falling River Country Club and was a member of the Appomattox Lions Club.
He is survived by his two children and their spouses, Harry Gordon
Jr. and Gail Francis Lawson of Lynchburg and Deborah Louise and Thomas A.
Gilliam of Appomattox; three grandchildren, Jason Matthew Gilliam, Morgan Brooke
Lawson, and Amber Louise Gilliam; a brother, Fredrick H. (Fred) Lawson and his
wife, Peggy; a special cousin and his wife, Samuel “Baby Sam” and Hilda
Ferguson; sister-in-law, Patsy Lawson all of Appomattox and numerous cousins,
nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, John R. (Jack) Lawson Jr.
and Samuel R. (Bobby) Lawson.
Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at
Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bruce Johnson with burial to follow
in Liberty Cemetery.

Alfred A. LeGrand, 85

Dies Sunday, July 8
CLARKSVILLE, July 10 – Alfred A. LeGrand,
85, of Red Fox Hill, died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in
Eden, NC. Born November 22, 1921 in Appomattox, he was the son of the late
William Josiah LeGrand and the late Lula Drinkard LeGrand.
He was educated in the Appomattox County schools and was a graduate
of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Al was in the U.S. Army during World War II,
serving as a staff sergeant in New Guinea and in the Pacific theater. He also
served as a medic aboard the Queen Mary, shuttling wounded prisoners across the
Atlantic.
Mr. LeGrand taught Vocational Agricultural in the Mecklenburg
County School system for 31 years, retiring in 1981 from Bluestone Senior High
School. He was active as a sponsor for the Future Farmers of America and had
several students serve as state officers. His influence as a teacher inspired
many of his students to become successful farmers, professors of Agriculture and
foresters.
He was an avid foxhunter, raising Walker hounds. He owned numerous
winning Walker foxhounds throughout his lifetime, most notable, Mill’s Sheriff,
Mark S, Twister LeGrand, and 1989 National Ch. Doc’s Rocky Top. He served as
secretary/treasurer of the Virginia Foxhunter’s Association and other officer
positions in local and regional hunt associations. He judged field trials and
was a mentor to many young hunters starting in the sport. Al was inducted into
the National Foxhunter’s Hall of Fame in 2004. Additionally he was a Tennessee
Walking Horse enthusiast, raising many pleasure and show horses. He judged
numerous horse shows locally and throughout the region.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Marie
Pearson LeGrand; brothers, Thomas E. LeGrand and sisters, Mary Anne LeGrand,
Lucille LeGrand Furney, Josephine LeGrand Carter. Al is survived by daughter,
Anne Le-Grand Mills, granddaughter, Taylor Marie Mills, and “adopted” grandson,
Bradley Clark and his faithful companion, Buster; sister, Elizabeth Yeakley and
brother, Walter H. LeGrand.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, at Liberty Baptist
Church in Finchley, with the Reverends Ben Rogers, Sid Rodriquez, and Dr. LeRoy
Clark officiating. Interment will follow at 4 p.m. in Liberty Baptist Church
Cemetery in Appomattox.

Prince George. She was predeceased by two brothers, R. Earl and J. Cliff Allen,
and two sisters, Virginia F. Allen and Wilma Allen Speight.
Mrs. Whitter was a life long member of Davis Memorial Presbyterian
Church in Prospect where she was pianist for many years and active in the
Presbyterian Women’s work on both the local and Presbytery level.
Services will be held at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home on
Thursday, July 12, at 2 p.m., followed by interment in the Prospect Methodist
Church cemetery. Visitation will be at the home in Prospect.
Memorial contributions may be made to the James Allen Scholarship
Fund at Hampden-Sydney College, Hampden-Sydney.
Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville, is in charge of
arrangements.

Dies Wednesday, July 4
FAIRFAX, July 10 – William A. Woodard,
died on July 4, 2007, at INOVA Fairfax Hospital. He was the son of Vilma “Pete”
Woodard and the late Aubrey Woodard.
He was the husband of Colleen Woodard. He is survived by daughters,
Jennifer Small (Steve), Kristin Walsh (Patrick) and Courtney Spears (Jeff);
sisters, Brenda Tomkinson and Joan Cohen; grandchildren, Madelyn and Aubrey
Small, Ryan, Kaitlin and Colin Walsh, Andrew and Samantha Spears.
Funeral service was held Saturday, July 7, at Everly Funeral Home,
Fairfax.

JULY 5 - Darrell Wayne Staton, 57, of
Cumberland, died Tuesday, July 3, 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy B. Staton; children, Alex Clarke
and Jessica Meade; stepchildren, Chris Hart, and Thomas, Mark, Mike, Erin, and
William Milton; one sister; four brothers; and three grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Jones
Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday (tonight) from 7 to 8 p.m.
at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.
