Mary L. Holmes, 67
Of Farmville,
Dies July 2

   JULY 3 – Mary Louise Holmes, 67, died on Monday, July 2, 2007 at her residence on Barrow Street in Farmville after becoming ill with cancer in 2003.
   She was the daughter and only child of Harry and Fannie Holmes of Farmville. She was preceded in death by her mother.
   Ms. Holmes spent her entire life in Farmville having worked at Southside Community Hospital for many years until her retirement to care for her mother.
   Mary will long be remembered as a “special” person who loved her work, her family and friends. She leaves special memories to devoted cousins, diligent and supportive friends, many of them co-workers when she was at Southside Community Hospital who were her caregivers, former high school classmates, and other relatives and friends.
   Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 7, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Farmville with the Rev. James Ashton delivering the eulogy, with interment in the Triumph Baptist Church, Darlington Heights.

Oscar Gordon Jones
Veteran of World War II,
Dies July 2 in Georgia


   JULY 3 – Oscar Gordon Jones, of Tucker, GA, died Monday, July 2, 2007. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the 14th U.S. Air Force from 1943-1945 in China. He was awarded the Air Medal and The Distinguished Flying Cross. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1950 and worked as a statistician with CDC retiring in 1980.
   Mr. Jones was an active member of the Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church and was active in the Boy Scouts. He touched the lives of numerous youths and adults in the Atlanta area.
   He is survived by his wife, Montise Jones; son, Jeff Jones of Fredericksburg; step-daughters, Viva Boyett of Stone Mountain, GA, Vickie Barnes of Erwin, TN, Dianne Poland of Marietta, GA, Suzanne Harp of Roswell, GA, Angela Talias of Marietta, GA; grandsons, Nicholas Barnes of Nashville, TN, Micheal Buffum of Fredericksburg; brothers, Guy Jones of Raleigh, NC, Howard Jones of Haverhill, MA; several nieces and nephews; and special son, Daud Hassan of Clarkston, GA.
   Funeral services were held at Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church, Tuesday, July 3, with the Rev. E. Gail Thompson and the Rev. Dr. John Huggins officiating.
   Burial will be Wednesday in Snow Hill Cemetery in Bakersville, NC.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Lawrenceville Road United Methodist Church.

Tammy “Squaw” Shaw, 45
Of Green Bay
Dies June 28


   JULY 3 – Tammy SeNora Langston “Squaw” Shaw, 45, of Green Bay, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2007 in Charlottesville. She was born July 15, 1961 in Alexandria, the daughter of Milton Langston Jr. of Green Bay and the late Betty Smith Langston. She was the wife of Thomas Michiel "Hippie” Shaw.
   She is survived by her father, her husband, and children, Michael Leo Langston of Ocalla, FL, Shawn Curtis Langston of Green Bay, Brandy Lynn Langston of Staunton, Kristy Nicole Langston of Green Bay, Megan Marie Langston of Rice, Brian Langston of Alexandria, and Amanda Lu Langston Shaw of Green Bay; a brother, Milton John Langston of Green Bay; and grandchildren, SeNora Elizabeth Langston of Green Bay, and Faith SeNora Langston Wood of Staunton.
   A graveside service was held Sunday at Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery.

Richard Grotte, 69


   JULY 3 – Richard Grotte, 69, of Prescott Valley, Arizona, went to be with the Lord on June 23, 2007. His passing was sudden and unexpected as he was in fair health. He died of an aneurism.
  He was a volunteer chaplain at YRMC Center-East Campus, a deacon at Robert Road Baptist Church, and a Sunday school teacher.
   Mr. Grotte is survived by his wife, Ellen of Prescott Valley; daughters, Sandra Lester of Charlotte Court House, and Lynn Shelton of North Carolina; brother, Dave Grotte; niece, Shelli Petitt; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
   A memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 27, at Robert Road Baptist Church. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, July 6, in the Amelia Veteran’s Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends at the Browning Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m., Thursday.

   McGAHEYSVILLE, July 3 – Wayne Barry Scott, 50, died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at his residence in McGaheysville. Mr. Scott was born June 18, 1957 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the son of the late Claiborne and Marjorie Scott.
   Mr. Scott was a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University and a devoted employee of Best Buy for the past nine years. He was a fun loving and free spirited man and was an emphatic music lover. He was a proud and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was charismatic, endearing and charming. His passion and zest for life will be carried on by those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Joyce Bennett Scott; a son, Stephen Barry Scott of McGaheysville; three daughters, Shannon Marie Scott of Appomattox, Tara Lee Scott of Gloucester, and Rebecca Ann Scott of McGaheysville; a brother, David Scott and wife, Debbie of Charlottesville; and two grandchildren, Adam Lee Taylor and Madisyn Brooke Taylor.
   The Rev. Ken Aldrich will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 5, at the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg.

Fannie Watkins Holmes, 84

Dies June 20


   JULY 3 – Fannie Watkins Holmes, 84, died on Wednesday, June 20, 2007 while a resident of Holly Manor Nursing Home in Farmville after a lengthy illness.
   She was the daughter of Walter and Clara Watkins of Darlington Heights, the wife of Harry Holmes of Farmville, and the mother of Mary Holmes. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and five sisters and brothers.
Survivors included a loving and devoted daughter, Mary; two sisters, Ida Bullock and Margaret Wesley and their families; many devoted nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
   Mrs. Holmes was funeralized at her home church, Triumph Baptist Church in Darlington Heights, with the pastor Rev. James Morris as the eulogist on June 23, with interment in the church cemetery.

   JUNE 28 – Elbert Benjamin Midkiff, 78, of Cumberland, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007. He was the son of the late Lonnie W. Midkiff and Neva Bryant Midkiff. He was preceded in death by a brother, James B. Midkiff.
   He is survived by a brother, Lonnie Odis Midkiff of Richmond; sisters, Margaret M. Scott of Farmville, and Nellie Jane M. Jervis of Richmond; nieces, Winifred Midkiff, Sharon M. Buchanan, Peggy S. Barrett and Betty S. Duncan; and nephews, Jeremy M. Midkiff, Timothy L. Midkiff, Ronnie R. Davidson, T. Porter Scott, and Robert A. Scott.
   Mr. Midkiff was a retired farmer and former veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime member of Payne Memorial United Methodist Church in Cumberland.
   A graveside funeral service was conducted on Monday, June 25, at the Oak Grove Baptist Church, Cumberland.

    RICHMOND, June 28 – John Hopkins Wilkerson Jr., beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2007.
   He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dacey K. Wilkerson.

   DILLWYN, June 26 – Emma Jean Shumaker, beloved sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2007 at her home in Dillwyn after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family and friends.
   She was preceded in death by her parents, Jessie and Lottie Shumaker; brother, Julian (Mutt) Shumaker; uncle, Lightfoot (Light); and nephew, Raymond.
   Mrs. Shumaker is survived by brothers and sisters, Daisy Robinson, Pauline Rhymer, Jessie, Dykes and Bruce Shumaker of Dillwyn, Georgia Browning, Peggy Scott of Richmond, Doris Rush and brother-in-law, Mac Bridgforth of Glen Allen, a devoted sister-in-law, Shirley Shumaker; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
   Services will be held Wednesday, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with burial in the Dillwyn Town Cemetery.

   JUNE 21 – Carroll Thomas Bailey, 80, of Farmville, beloved husband and father, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at his residence. He was born June 9, 1927 in Baltimore, MD. He was the son of the late Warren Standsberry and Lillian Lazette Smith Bailey. He was the husband of Margaret Bailey.
   Mr. Bailey was the owner of KOA Campground, and Charlotte Realty for over thirty years. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where he served as an elder for more than twenty years.
   He is survived by his wife, and daughter, Melanie Bailey of Farmville. He was preceded in death by a brother, Warren “Buddy” Bailey.
   A memorial service will be held Monday, June 25, 2007, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Samuel Bazluke Jr.

Samuel Bazluke Jr., 81
Farmville Resident,
Dies June 17

   JUNE 19 — Samuel R. Bazluke Jr., 81, died on Sunday, June 17, in Farmville. Born in Chicopee, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Samuel and Martha (Smith) Bazluke. He moved to Virginia in 2005. Educated in Chicopee schools, he graduated from McDonalds University in 1967 and became Manager of the Chicopee McDonalds. He also was employed at F.W. Sickles and the Chicopee Municipal Home.
   A veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, he served on the USS Arcab and in the U.S. Marines. He was a lifetime member of the Chicopee Elks 1849; and belonged to VFW Post #625 and American Legion Post #452. He was a former director of the Chicopee Boys and Girls Club, the Ward Three Social and Civil Club and former Deputy Sheriff for Hampden County. Mr. Bazluke also served as a Trustee for the Chicopee Municipal Home and was on the Mobile Home Rent Control Board.
   He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan A. (Roberts) Bazluke; a son, Samuel Bazluke III of MA; daughters, Diane Buczek and her husband, Robert of VA, and Linda Torres of MA, a son-in-law, David Gawle; and six grandchildren, Madeline, Robert, Joshua, Samantha Buczek and Ryan and Eric Gawle and one great-granddaughter, Grace Buczek; brothers, Thomas Bazluke of FL and Donald Bazluke VT and sisters, Elsie Lamberti of VT and Jean Eisenwinter of FL; a sister-in-law, Patricia Roberts of GA and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves his coffee buddy and dear friend, Roger Chapdelaine.
   He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Ann (Bazluke) Gawle, a brother, Robert Bazluke, and a grand-son, Eduardo Bazluke.
   Committal services will be at The Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA on July 2 at 3 p.m.
