Charles E. Kidd Jr., 60
Of Wingina, Dies
June 13 In Lynchburg

   June 14 — Charles Everett Kidd Jr., 60, of Wingina, died Wednesday, June 13, 2007 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Brenda Pugh Kidd for 39 years.
   Born in Buckingham County, he was a son of Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Scruggs Kidd of Wingina and the late Charles E. Kidd Sr. He was owner of Kidd Timber Company and a veteran of the US Army serving his country during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Antioch-Union Baptist Church, the Bible League, and the Veterans of Foreign War.
   “ Jr.” as he was known to all who met and loved him was truly a generous and giving man, always ready to share his faith and to meet the needs of anyone. His love of family, love for his workers and always putting God first is what made him so special.
   In addition to his wife and mother he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Tansey K. and Dr. Joshua Binder of Wingina; a brother, Percy E. Kidd and his wife, Linda of Appomattox; two sisters, Joyce K. Smith and her husband, Charles of Wingina and Jenny K. Ledford and her husband, Larry of Mocksville, NC; a brother-in-law, Clifford Pugh and his wife, Sherry of Lynchburg and numerous very special nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Kitty Kidd Fette.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Friday, June 15, in Antioch-Union Baptist Church, Antioch Facility, by the Rev. Jennings Duncan III and the Rev. Buddy Bryant. Burial will follow in the Antioch-Union Baptist Church Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends Thursday (today) at Robinson Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

James T. Bruce Jr.

Dies June 12

   RICHMOND, June 14 — James Thomas Bruce Jr., of Richmond, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2007. He was born August 27, 1916 in Rice, the son of the late James Thomas Bruce and Fannie Clark Bruce.
   He graduated from Maryville College, Maryville, TN, with a B.A. in chemistry and joined DuPont as an analytical chemist. During World War II he was commissioned as an officer in the Army Air Corps, serving as a meteorologist in the Middle East and Africa and later in the Korean conflict, and for 20 years in the Air Force Reserve, attaining the rank of Major. After the war, Mr. Bruce returned to DuPont from where he retired after 32 years of service. He was long-time member and deacon of Westover Baptist Church.
   He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Braden Bruce; a son, James Thomas Bruce III; daughter-in-law, Carol Elder Bruce; daughters, Virginia Bruce Evans and Nancy Bruce Robertson; son-in-law, William Sage Robertson and six grand-children, Emily Elder Bruce, James Graham Evans, Sarah Bruce Robertson, James Thomas Bruce IV, William Sage Robertson Jr., and Barbara Louise Bruce.
   Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at Westover Baptist Church on Saturday, June 16, at Westover Blvd. and 49th Street, Richmond, with interment at Westhampton Memorial Park.
   The family will receive friends at the Huguenot Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.

   June 14 — Marjorie Cox Statzer, 75, formerly of Farmville, died Saturday, June 9, 2007, in Mendon, IL. She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Statzer Jr.
   Mrs. Statzer is survived by her daughter, Ethel S. Wilkerson and husband, Kenneth of Mendon, IL; sons, Ronald W. Statzer and wife, Edna of Elizabeth City, NC, Donald W. Statzer of Richmond, William B. “Billy” Statzer III of Wise, Davie W. Statzer and wife, Shirl of Farmville, Michael R. Statzer of Columbus, OH and Robert D. Statzer and wife, Kimberly of Gulfport, MS; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; brothers, Walter C. Cox of Dillwyn and Elwood C. Cox of Victoria; and a sister, Juanita Washburn of Ocala, FL.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 15, at the Maranatha Baptist Church, Farmville, with interment in the Westview Cemetery, Farmville.

   June 14 — Walker Robert Burley, 85, of Farmville, passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2007, in Farmville. He was born March 17, 1922 in Amherst County, the son of the late John Robert and Minnie Lee Branham Burley. He was the husband of Ruby H. Burley.
   Mr. Burley worked as a pulpwood cutter and farmer for many years. He loved the out-doors, most notable was his love for fishing and hunting.
   He is survived by his wife; sons, Bobby Burley and his wife, Hazel of Burkeville and Mike Burley and his wife, Terri of Green Bay; daughters, Peggy Barton and her husband, Clay of Green Bay and Mary Ann Cronk of Farmville; four sisters, eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
   A funeral service will be held Friday, June 15, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice.
   The family will receive friends Thursday (today) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lt. Col. Carroll, 90
USAF Res., Ret.
Dies June 9

   KEYSVILLE, June 12 – Lt. Col. Otey Burnett Carroll (USAF Res., Retired) died peacefully Saturday, June 9, 2007, in his sleep at Britthaven Nursing Home in Keysville of congestive heart failure at age 90.
   Mr. Carroll was born in Monroe in 1916, moved to Alexandria in 1926, and was most recently a 35-year resident of Meherrin.
   Mr. Carroll was immediately nicknamed “Pappy” when he joined the Army Air Corps in 1940, as he was the oldest cadet in his class. He became a navigator and served our country during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam. Over the course of his service, the Army Air Corps changed names twice; first to US Army Air Forces and finally to the US Air Force. “Pappy” retired from the Air Force Re-serves in 1971 as a Lieutenant Colonel with the 756th Airlift Squadron out of Andrews Air Force Base.
   He was also a 30-year employee of the US Postal Service, serving as a finance officer in Alexandria. Upon moving to Meherrin in 1972, he began working at the State Bank of Keysville and was there until 1979. He also served as the treasurer of the Meherrin Volunteer Fire Department Bingo for seven years.
   Mr. Carroll is survived by his dearly beloved wife, Ellen Bow-man Carroll, and three daughters, EvaMarie Carroll Edwards of Eagan, MN; Patricia L. Carroll Phillips of Savoy, MA, and Cynthia M. Carroll of Prince George; step-children, Mary Louise Aldridge, James “Butch” Bolick, and Johnny Bolick, all of Alexandria; a sister, Lucille Carroll Gossard of Palm Bay, FL; grandchildren, Lauren Michelle Phillips, Jon Edward Carroll, Jervis “Jay” Yates Carroll, Crystal Yvonne Bolick Hamby, Angel Marie Bolick Smith, Walter Ray Bolick, Nathaniel Lewis Ed-wards, and Kaitlyn Elisabeth Edwards; and great-grandchildren, Samantha and Ethan Phillips; Ashley Owen; Justin, Jeremy, Andrew, and Austin Carroll; Madelaine and Ruth Ellen Hamby; Tyler Triplett; and Madelaine Bolick.
   He is preceded in death by a son, Jon Ross Carroll, and a daughter, Cathy J. Carroll.
   He was known for his honesty, integrity, and sense of duty, and was loved by all who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
   Funeral arrangements will be handled by Browning Funeral Home, Keysville, with the family receiving guests on Tuesday (today), June 12, at the Browning Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m., and services on Wednesday, June 13, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Browning Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Meherrin Methodist Church.
   Memorials preferred to the Meherrin Volunteer Fire Department.

Resident, Dies

   MONROE, GA, June 12 – Virginia Mattie DiLorenzo, 86, formerly of Beckley, died Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Anmed Health Center in Anderson, SC,
   Born Sept. 17, 1920, in Buckingham County, she was a daughter of the late Melvin Stanley and Edith Eppard Stanley.
   Mrs. DiLorenzo had resided in Monroe for 13 years, moving from Beckley where she lived most of her life, and was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She was a re-tired kitchen employee of St. Francis de Sales Catholic School. She was very active in FISH (Faith In Serving Humanity) in Monroe and was a member of St. Anna’s Catholic Church in Monroe.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis DiLorenzo, and a son, Milton “Buster” Watkins.
   Survivors include her children, Mary (Barney) Atkinson of Anderson, Mauro (Nancy) DiLorenzo of Beckley, Palley (Cindy) DiLorenzo of Monroe, Joe DiLorenzo of Nashville, TN, and Ed West of Kennesaw, GA; sisters, Anne Berry and Margaret Carter of Farmville; a brother, Melvin Stanley of Richmond; 12 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral Liturgy was held at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Beckley, with the Rev. Pericles Malacaman officiating. Rite of Committal followed in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

   June 12 – Robbie M. Duncan Jr., 46, of Columbia, died Saturday, June 9, 2007. He was predeceased by his mother, Royce Ryburn Duncan, and son, Jacob Carrison Duncan.
   He is survived by his daughter, Darian M. Duncan of Troy; father, Robert M. Duncan Sr. of Columbia; a brother, Richard Matthias Duncan of Powhatan; a sister, Glennis Duncan Yarbrough of Columbia; and ex-wife, Tracey M. Cosner.

Dies May 29

   MOUNT AIRY, NC, June 7 — Myrtle Ruth Spivey Lewis, 85, of Mount Airy, went to be with her heavenly Father peacefully on Tuesday, May 29, 2007, after an extended illness.
   Mrs. Lewis was born November 9, 1921, in Greene County, to the late Robert and Bertha Spivey. Ruth lived in Mount Airy for over 40 years and was greatly loved in the community as “Mamma Lewis.” She devoted many years as a substitute teacher in the Surry County Schools. She was a faithful member of Franklin Heights Methodist Church until her health declined. Mrs. Lewis was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
   She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Bruce “Bob” Lewis Jr. and Sharon Lewis of Portland, OR, Michael Joseph “Mike” and Margie Lewis of Richland, WA, and Phillip Anthony “Tony” and Karen Lewis of Knightdale; and four beloved granddaughters, Laurel Boardman of Portland, OR, Karlie Megan Lewis of Birmingham, AL, Abigail Rose Lewis of McMinnville, OR, and Hillary Carol Lewis of Raleigh, NC. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Bruce Lewis Sr. and her siblings.
   The children and grandchildren would like to extend their gratitude to Cam and Wimpie Burge, Kenny Kallam, and all of her many friends for their devoted friendship and assistance in helping the family with her care.
   A memorial service will be held Wednesday, June 13, at 11:00 a.m. at Franklin Heights Methodist Church in Mount Airy. A reception for the family members will be held at the church immediately following the service.

   JUNE 7 — Frank J. Friscia, 91, of Farmville passed away Saturday, June 2, 2007. He was born February 29, 1916 in New York, the son of the late Vincent and Carmella Devenaro Friscia. He was a retired paper cutter.
   Mr. Friscia is survived by his daughter, Katherine Skelly and her husband John of Cumber-land; grandchildren, John Skelly Jr. of Cumberland and Kathleen Skelly of Midlothian and great-grandchildren, Sarah Skelly of Lake Gaston and Taunnie Skelly of Washington State.
   A graveside service was held Monday, June 4, at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice.

Mary Bynum Booker, 86
Of Farmville
Dies May 26

   JUNE 7 — Mary Cecil Bynum Booker, 86, of Farmville, died Saturday, May 26, 2007 at Holly Manor Nursing Home.
   She was born in Valentines, VA, the daughter of the late Mary Cecil Baldwin Bynum and Dr. Archibald McDowell Bynum. She was preceded in death by a brother, Arch M. Bynum.
   Mrs. Booker graduated from Farmville High School in 1937. She attended Longwood then entered Centenary College, in Shreveport, LA in 1939. This was the home of her Aunt Lucille Baldwin Sexton. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in History in 1941. She was a longtime member of Farmville United Methodist Church. She moved to Charlottesville and worked for the Social Security Administration until she retired.
   Mrs. Booker married George Booker in 1959. Later, she returned to Farmville to care for her mother. She was assisted by Shirley Childress who continued to help her until she moved to Holly Manor in 2005.
   She dedicated her retired years to Meals on Wheels, other church activities and doing community service. She worked part-time at Longwood Library.
   Mrs. Booker is survived by a niece, Marcie Brame; a nephew, Mack Bynum, her sister-in-law, Martie Bynum; and Martha Brame and Chip Nelson, Robert and Jennie Brame and Alice Brame and Joel Merritt; cousins, Betty Baldwin Taylor of Farmville, Wade MacDonald of Durham, NC and Peg Smith of Ferandino Beach, FL.
   A memorial service will be held June 16 at the Farmville United Methodist Church at 2 p.m.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Farmville United Methodist Church or to Prince Edward County Rescue Squad.

   CHESTER, June 5 – John D. “Don” Dishman, 79, of Chester, formerly of Hampden-Sydney, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 3, 2007. He was the widow of Faye M. Dishman.
   He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Dorothea D. and Thomas V. Owen Jr.; nieces, Sally Reed, Mary Perini, and Susan Clark; great-nieces, Tiffany Adkins and Megan Buchanan; great-nephews, Todd Buchanan and Carson Clark.
   Mr. Dishman was a U.S. Air Force Korean War veteran and retired from Allied Chemical Co.
   Funeral services will be held 10 a.m., Wednesday, at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road, Richmond, with interment to follow at Sun-set Memorial Park in Chester.

Dies June 1

   JUNE 5 – Robert Asa Borum, 77, of Burkeville, passed away Friday, June 1, 2007.
   He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie Elliott Borum; a son, Robert A. Borum Jr. and wife, Gayle; two grandchildren, Crystal and Chris; and two great-grandchildren, Braxton and Tyler; brothers, Charles “Doc” Borum and wife, Anna May, and Thomas Borum and wife, Peggy; a special aunt, Julia; several nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Thornhill.
   Mr. Borum was retired from Southwestern and Atlantic Life Insurance companies. Upon retirement, he worked for Citizens Bank and Trust Co., and then joined the staff of Jennings and Hamner McMillian Funeral Homes, where he worked for many years. He was a member and Deacon of Burkeville Baptist Church, Burke Lodge #147 AF&AM, Southside Shrine Club. He served as a former chairman of The Alms House “Food Bank”, spending countless hours.
   He enjoyed his farming activities and helping others.
   Funeral services were held Monday, June 4, at 2 p.m., at Burkeville Baptist Church. Burial with Masonic Rites to followed at Sunset Hill Cemetery, Burkeville.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Burkeville Baptist Church Building Fund, the Alms House, Nottoway County Emergency Squad, or Burkeville Volunteer Fire Department.
