JANUARY 29 - Audrey A. McKay, 96, of Farmville, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004, In Farmville.
   She was born October 30, 1907 in Halifax County, a daughter of the late Sam and Nancy Katherine Wade Arthur. She was the widow of Raynard H. McKay.
    She is survived by three sons, Curtis McKay and his wife, Nancy, Charles McKay and his wife. Patsy all of Farmville and Bernard McKay and his wife, Ann of Richmond; two daughters, Anne Barton and her husband, Charles of Green Bay and Jerolene Jennings and her husband, William of Richmond; five sisters-in-law, Beulah Arthur, Dallas M. Trible, Virginia M. Cralle, Ruth M. Pollard and Edith M. Falkowski; one brother-in-law, Lloyd B. McKay; ten grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and eight great-step grandchildren.
   A funeral service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Douglas Presbyterian Church with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
   The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville.

   DILLWYN, Jan. 27 - Claiborne Randolph Johnson, of Dillwyn, died Friday, January 23, 2004.
  Born December 11, 1938, he is survived by his wife. Ruby; three children, Derdick, Rhonda and Kelly; four grandchildren, Darrick, Deionna, Jamal and Jayda; three children-in-law, Whitney, John and Mark; his mother, Dorothy L. Johnson; his sister, Rachel Pringle and a host of other relatives and friends.
    A member of Fork Union Baptist Church of Buckingham, he was a family man and educator, serving as principal of Gold Hill Elementary for 25 years. He gave generously of his time to his church and his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi, Inc.
   A memorial tribute service will be held Wednesday, January 28 at 7 p.m. with home going services to be held Thursday, January 29 at 2 p.m. Both services will be held at Fork Union Baptist Church, Buckingham.

Bennie Nunnally, Sr.
Retired Police Officer
Dies January 16

   JANUARY 27 - Funeral services for Bennie Nunnally, Sr., were held 1 p.m. Thursday at High Rock Baptist Church, Rice, with interment in the church cemetery. Deacon Nunnally died Friday, January 16, 2004 at Southside Community Hospital.
   He was born August 20, 1918 in Prince Edward County, a son of the late Ed and Lucy S. Nunnally.
  He was educated in Prince Edward Schools and attended many police training seminars and classes. He served in the Army during World War II from September 1942 until December 3, 1945. During that time he served in France and Germany and was a driver for the Red Ball Express. He was employed at Burkeville Veneer for 25 years and also was a Burkeville Police Officer and served as Chief of Police of Burkeville. He was a member of the police force for 32 years. After retirement he worked with his scrap metal business until his illness. He was a member of High Rock Baptist Church serving in the Men's chorus, Sunday School teacher. Superintendent and church Deacon.
  
He is survived by his wife, Adell; children, Bennie, Jr. of Charlotte, NC, Calvin, Sr. of Burkeville, Barbara Eggleston of Farmville, Clarence of Crewe and Doreen Williams of Richmond; one sister, Doris Scott of Rice; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one step-grandchild and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two children, Brenda D. Nunnally and Leon V. Nunnally; three brothers and three sisters.

   HOPEWELL JUNCTION, NY, Jan. 27 - Joseph Harrington Crooker, 68, died Sunday, January 25, 2004 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center, Poughkeepsie, NY after a battle with cancer.
   He was born October 17, 1935 in Boston, MA, a son of Joseph E. Crooker and Florence Harrington Crooker.
   He was married to Sally Clark in Farmville in 1966 and retired from AT&T in White Plains, NY in 1991 after 27 years of service. He then worked as a contractor for AT&T until 1999.
  He is survived by his wife, Sally; a son, Dr. Joseph C. "Jay" Crooker of Boulder, CO; a daughter, Cheryl Holsberry and her husband. Ray of White House, TN and a grandson, Eli Joseph Holsberry.
   A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Hopewell Reformed Church, Hopewell Junction, NY. Burial will be in the family plot In Bristol, ME In the spring.

   JANUARY 27 - Ruby Virginia Davis Woodson, 81, of Farmville, died Saturday, January 24,2004.
   She was born April 29, 1922 in Free Union, a daughter of the late Bernard S. and Sallie Davis.
   She is survived by her husband, Franklin C. Woodson; a daughter, Carol Chandler of Farmville; a son, Donald F. Woodson of Cedar Hill, TX; three grandchildren, Courtney Warren of Victoria, Andy Chandler of Harrisonburg and Amanda Chandler of Farmville; one step grandchild, Micah Woodson of Cedar Hill, TX; one great-grandson, Matthew Warren; one great-step grandson, Michael Warren both of Victoria and a brother, Chester Davis of Palmyra.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Johns Memorial Episcopal Church, Farmville, with interment at 2 p.m. in Holly Memorial Gardens, Charlottesville.

   She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Fowler of Meherrin; two brothers, Marion Foster of Raleigh, NC and Harry Foster of Portsmouth; two sisters, Elizabeth Braswell of Windsor and Annie Mae Dunnavant of Victoria; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton L. Foster and a daughter, Virginia Clark.

   In addition to his parents, he is survived by a daughter, Abrea DuRea Lowry of Indian Valley; a devoted friend, Ruth Anne Seay of West Augusta; a sister, Beverly L. Bailey of Drakes Branch and his former wife, Barbara Lowry of Indian Valley. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Luke Lowry and his brother. Harry J. Lowry.
   A graveside service was held 2 p.m. today (Thursday) In Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Native, Dies in NY


   MEHERRIN, Jan. 22 - Diana Faye Coleman-Lewis, 53, died Tuesday, January 6, 2004 in Brooklyn Hospital of Brooklyn, New York.
   She was born December 28, 1950, a daughter of the late Ben and Bessie Coleman.
   She received her education in Prince Edward County Schools and later joined the Job Corps. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church but later relocated to Brooklyn, MY and joined Greater Joy Baptist Church.
   She is survived by her brothers, Bennie Coleman, Jr. of Meherrin and Alvin T. Coleman of Alberta; three sisters, Beulah Peterson of Brooklyn, NY, Jean Barnes and Shirl  Walton both of Meherrin and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Timothy Lewis and a brother, William Watson.
   Funeral services were held Monday, January 12 at New Bethel Baptist Church, Meherrin, with interment in the church cemetery.

Dies Monday


   BURKEVILLE, Jan. 22 -Eddie Moore, 56, of Burkeville, died Monday, January 19, 2004 at his residence. ,
   He was born September 18, 1946 in Nottoway County, a son of Wynona Bates of Blackstone and the late George William Moore.
   In addition to his mother, he is survived by three sons, Eddie Moore, Jr., Wayne Moore and Dallas Moore; the mother of his sons, Mildred Welchlin; five brothers, William, Richard, Harry, Charlie and Raymond; four sisters, Lillian, Edith, Betty and Irene and four grandchildren, Chris, Holly, Tiffany and Ashley.
   A funeral service will be held Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville. The family will receive friends after the service until 8:30 p.m. Interment will be held in the Family Cemetery,
Rice.

Dies Friday

   JANUARY 20 - Barbara Lee Strickler Herrmann, 71, of Farmville, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, January 16, 2003.
   She was born October 10, 1932 in Washington DC.
She is survived by her husband, John A. Herrmann; two sons, Van Strickler and wife, Janis of Virginia Beach and Dale Strickler of Farmville; two daughters. Sandy Henderson of Meherrin and Millie Strickler and husband, Harry Swisher of Lexington; two stepsons, John A. Herrmann, Jr. and wife, Kathy of Smithfield and Fred Herrmann of Virginia Beach; two stepdaughters, Cathy Herrmann Dean and husband, Ken of Montreal, Canada and Laura Merrell and husband, Joe of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, James and Jareth Strickler of Chesapeake and Katie Strickler of Virginia Beach; a sister, Elaine Cross and husband, Claude of Charleston, SC; a brother, Karl Franke of Silver Spring, MD and her constant companions, her loving puppies, Barney, Sam and Puddln. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Tommy Henderson.
   Mrs. Herrmann was a retired paralegal in Westfield, NJ before moving to Farmville in 1995. She was a very active and respected member of the community, president of the Farmville Woman's Club from 2000-2002, a certified Master Gardener and president of the Garden Study Club from 1998-1999. She was a representative to the Town and Country Beautification Council and participated In many civic activities associated to this. She was a member of the South Central Fiber Artists' Guild for six years, where she was vice president, reporter and instructor.
   She was very active at St. Theresa Catholic Church, where she was a parishioner, a member of the Altar Guild, chairman of the Parish Events Committee and International dinners.
   A memorial service will be held at St. Theresa Catholic Church on Saturday, January 24 at 1:30 p.m. interment will be held Sunday at 12:30 p.m. in Westvlew Cemetery.

Dr. Ray A. Moore, 83

Dies Sunday


   HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Jan. 20-Dr. Ray A. Moore, Jr., 83, of Hampden-Sydney, died Sunday, January 18,2004.
   He was born March 4, 1920 In Charlotte County, a son of the late Ray A. Moore, Sr. and Pauline Smith Moore. He was preceded In death by a daughter, Paula Morrison Moore Dillingham.
   He attended Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg, WV, graduated from Worsham High School, Hampden-Sydney College and Medical College of Virginia.
   Dr. Moore was a member, Deacon and Elder at College Presbyterian Church, past president of Farmvllle Lions Club, alumni advisor Sigma Sigma Chapter, member of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and Farmvllle YMCA. He was a Nase Award recipient, lifetime member of the Five County Fair Association and one of the original shareholders of Southslde Nursing Home, Inc.
   He was a former chairman of the Prince Edward County School Board and served as a member of that board from 1961 to 1969.
   Dr. Moore was a World War II Army Medical Corp veteran. He began a private practice in internal medicine and was an active staff member of Southslde Community Hospital since 1953. He was on the board of directors and attending physician at Holly Manor Nursing Home since 1968 and former president of Southslde Community Hospital staff and Fourth District Medical Society. He held memberships in Southslde Medical, Virginia Medical and American Medical Societies, American Society of Internal Medicine, Senior Medical Examiner, Federal Aviation Administration, Medical Examiner, Department of Disability Determination. He was designated Dermatologist and Pathologist at the 121st Station Hospital, Heidelberg, Germany during his Army service.
   He is survived by two daughters, Margrette Macfie Moore of Richmond and Alva Moore Joyner of Windsor; three grandsons, Weyland Thomas Joyner, IV, McGregor Steele Joyner and Ray Atkinson Moore Dillingham; two sons-in-law, Weyland Thomas Joyner, III and Paul Wayne Dillingham; three brothers, Robert Patrick Moore of Richmond, John Andrew Moore of Greensboro, NC and William Alexander Moore of Woodstock.
   Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at College Presbyterian Church, Hampden-Sydney, with interment in the church cemetery.
    The family will receive friends at the residence.

   DILLWYN, Jan. 20 - Ethel May Hellman Williams, 79, of Dillwyn, died Friday, January 16, 2004 in Farmvllle.
Born October 6, 1924 in Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Charles Hellman and Kate Ashfield.
   Mrs. Williams was a well known porcelain artist and member of the International Porcelain Artists and Teachers, Inc.
   She is survived by a daughter, Nancy L. Cryan of Dillwyn; a son, Garth L. Cupp of Salem, OR; a brother, Ronald Hellman of Ohio; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles J. Hellman and a sister, Bette Busby.
   A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 25 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmvllle.

Lynwood G. Smith, 80

Electrician, Dies

   JANUARY 20 - Lynwood Gordon Smith, of Farmvllle, died Saturday, January 17, 2004 at his residence.
   He was born July 4, 1923 and was preceded in death by two brothers, Lester Smith of Amherst and Lewis Hartwell Smith of Farmville and two sisters, Christine Fitzgerald of Farmville and Claudia Scott of Lynchburg.
   Mr. Smith and two of his brothers established and operated Smitty Brothers Electric Company for over 35 years on Main Street, as a merchant and electrician. He was In the Lions Club for many years and was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 2000. He was a charter member of Heritage Baptist Church where he served as deacon and trustee. He served as a technical sergeant In the Medical Corp as an x-ray technician at Fort McClellan, Alabama during World War II. He was a graduate of Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL.
   He is survived by his wife, Dorothy V. Smith; a brother, Thomas Winfred Smith of Farmvllle; two sisters, Ruby Irving Smith and Virginia Jones both of Lynchburg; one daughter, Vicky S. Burnette; two sons, Gordon V. Smith and Stanley R. Smith; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
   Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at Heritage Baptist Church with interment in Westvlew Cemetery, Farmvllle.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Farmvllle Lions Club.

   She was born in Guantanamo, Cuba on May 15, 1904, a daughter of the late Emilio and Antonia Torres Montes De Oca.
   She is survived by her two devoted sons, Michael Silveira and his wife, Maria of Farmvllle and Jorge Silveira and his wife, June of Hampden-Sydney; eight grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. "Lucy" was preceded in death by her husband, Miguel Angel Silveira, Sr. and two sisters.

   JANUARY 20 - James H. Francis, 62, of Farmville, died Saturday, January 17, 2004.
   He was born January 17, 1942 in Nelson County, a son of the late Harmon and Leila Cash Francis. He was an employee of Weavexx Corporation.
   He is survived by his children, Vickie Francis Wilson of South Boston, James Michael Francis of Halifax and Donna Francis Lewis of Farmville; a special friend, Peggy Lawson of Farmville; sisters, Eleanor Harris and Ruth Jennings both of Nathalie and Rebecca Hogan of Halifax; brothers, Clark Francis of Taylor, MI and Kenneth Francis of South Boston and five grandchildren.

   JANUARY 20 - Woodrow T. Cook, 91, of Buckingham County, died Tuesday, January 20, 2004,
   He was born October 18, 1912, a son of the late Martin L. Cook and Edna O'Brien Cook. He married Elizabeth Stokes Cook of Green Bay on August 2, 1932. She preceded him in death.
   He is survived by four children, Lois Carter and husband, Bill of Burkeville, Ann Metcalfe of Virginia Beach, Edward Cook and wife, Ann of Dillwyn and Wayne Cook and wife, Tonya of Richmond; nine grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Cook was a U.S. Mall carrier for 12 years and retired November 2, 1977 from the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation after 25 years of service. He was a life member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church and Chairman of the Board of Deacons for 35 years and treasurer for 48 years. Mr. Cook was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 242 In Buckingham where he was raised to a Master Mason on February 3, 1968.
   Funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
