   MAY 29 - Walter T. Hawkins, 59, of Midlothian, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at his vacation home in Nags Head, NC. He was born September 22, 1947 in Farmville.
   He was a graduate of Cumberland High School and attended Richmond Professional Institute (now VCU). After 34 years of service with Reynolds International/Alcoa, he retired in 2002.
   He is survived by his wife, Gale; son, Shaun Hawkins and wife, Christie of Albany, GA; daughters, Kelley Balewick and husband, Dan of Richmond, Tracy Williams and husband, Gennaro "Gerry" Milo of Midlothian, Mandy Nealy and husband, Brannon of Midlothian; and six grandchildren.
   Walt is also survived by his mother, Marion P. Hawkins; and sister, Vacelo H. Moore of Farmville; brothers, Millard M. "Mike" Hawkins and wife, Bernice of Spotsylvania; Frederick L. "Freddie" Hawkins and wife, Sally of Chattanooga, TN, and several nieces and nephews, including Suzanne Moore of Farmville.
   He was predeceased by his father, Millard H. Hawkins of Farmville. Walt was a beloved family man and will be greatly missed by all.
   Funeral services were held Saturday, May 26.

Earl Cecil (Buddy) Lloyd Jr

Dies Saturday

   MARYLAND, May 29 — Earl Cecil (Buddy) Lloyd Jr., 66, of Mechanicsville, Maryland, died Saturday, May 26, 2007.
   Born August 7, 1940 in Roanoke, he was the son of Ona Opal Dickerson Doss and the late Earl Cecil Lloyd Sr., of Roanoke.
   Mr. Lloyd was a retired United States Navy Seabees (E6) with 21 years of service. He was also retired after 21 years from the VA Medical Center in Salem as a maintenance mechanic. Mr. Lloyd was a long-time member of Fleet Reserve Association and AMVETS. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose at the Mechanicsville, Maryland Lodge and the Disabled American Veterans. He is probably best known for helping with the neighboring Amish community.
   In addition to his mother, he Is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Lloyd; two sons, Jeffery L. (Tiffney) Lloyd of Roanoke and Mark (Deana) Tasciotti of Mechanicsville, Maryland; three daughters, Bonnie L. (Patrick) Rhodes of Alachua, Florida, Kathy L. Lloyd of Roanoke and Kathy (Chet) Ranson of Meherrin; one sister, Wanda Lloyd of California; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and his former wife, Ann Lloyd.
   Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 31, at 11 a.m. at Raymond Funeral Chapel, La Plata, Maryland by Pastor Charles Riggs with interment at Maryland Veterans Cemetery, Cheltenham, Maryland.
   The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 30, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Raymond Funeral Chapel, La Plata, Maryland.

   MAY 29 - Mrs. Margaret Lucille Oliver Mitchell Wilson, 87, of Farmville, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2007, in Farmville.
   She was born March 24, 1920, the daughter of the late Otto and Bessie Mann Oliver. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Tommie Mitchell, and husband. Jack C. Wilson; and brother, Tom Oliver.
   She is survived by a son, Tony R. Mitchell and wife, Joyce; daughters, Karen Story and husband, Rob, Judy Layne, Jackie Spears and husband, Raymond; and Amy Beatson and husband, Guerry; a brother, Pete Oliver; sisters, Ruth Hudson, Frances Easter and her husband, Clarence, and Mildred Robertson; grandchildren, Michelle Patteson, Keith Mitchell, Julia Story, Nathaniel Layne, Phillip Layne, and Eric Spears; four great-grandchildren; and a special sister-in-law, Gayle Oliver.
   A funeral service was held Tuesday (today), 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Dies Friday

   DILLWYN, May 29 – Catherine Call Craft, 81, of Dillwyn, died Friday, May 25 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clyde Craft Sr., and two sons, Henry and Arnold Craft.
   Survivors include a daughter, Evelyn Johnson and her husband, Wayne of Dillwyn; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
   A funeral service was held Monday at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.
   Interment followed in the Dillwyn Town Cemetery, Dillwyn.

  APPOMATTOX, May 29 — Fay Dare Dieterich, 89, formerly of Safety Harbor, FL and Bethesda, MD, died Thursday, May 24, 2007 in Avante of Lynchburg. She was the wife of the late Philip A. Dieterich Sr.
  Born in Jerseyville, Illinois, September 1, 1917, she was the daughter of the late John A. Dare and Eliza Eleanor Stamps Dare. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and a retired realtor.
  She is survived by a daughter, the Rev. Susan D. Holland and her husband, John Ivey of Appomattox; three granddaughters and two great-granddaughters, Amy Dare Oliver and her husband, Kevin and their daughters, Emily Claire and Anna Grace all of Lexington, SC, Clare G. Gregory and her husband, Scott of Evans, GA and Susan J. Parrish of Richmond.
  She was preceded in death by a son, Philip A. Dieterich Jr.
  A memorial prayer service was held 4:30 p.m., Sunday, May 27, at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Bruce Johnson.
  Graveside funeral services were held in Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, Clearwater, FL.

   MAY 24 – Mrs. Melda F. Runion Loveday, 96, of Farmville, died on Tuesday, May 22, 2007.
   She was born June 22, 1910 in Erwin TN, the daughter of the late James Henry Foster and Elizabeth Tilson Foster. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Hugh Runion and Mack Loveday.
   She is survived by three sons, Hobert L. Runion and wife, Marie of Blackstone, Guy Runion of Wilson, and Jerry Conrad Runion and wife, Rachel of Farmville; two daughters, Roberta Foster and husband, Shelton of Dillwyn, and Betty Vanderpoole of Prospect; two sisters, Ebbie Edwards of Erwin, TN, and Ollie Tipton of Greenville, TN; 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
   The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-7 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home where a funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m.
   Graveside services and interment will be conducted on Saturday at 2 p.m. from Concord Baptist Church Cemetery in the Cullen community.

   MAY 24 – Joseph Wendell Lewis, 74, of Green Bay, passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2007.
  He was survived by his wife of 52 years, Brenda G. Lewis; a son, Charles W. Lewis of Green Bay; two daughters, Wendy S. Otto and husband, Eric and son, Matthew S. Otto of Chester, and Brenda Raben and husband, Carl of Conway, SC; a sister, Ruby Chadwick and husband, Steve of Little River, SC; a brother, Henry Lewis and wife, Ruth of Galivants Ferry; and many nephews and nieces.
   Mr. Lewis was passionate about hunting and fishing; was a devoted father, and his children’s number one fan. Donations may be made in his honor to the Meherrin Rescue Squad.
   A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday in Red Hill Cemetery in Aynor, SC.

   MEHERRIN, May 24 – John Edward Christian, 67, of Meherrin, died Wednesday morning, May 23, 2007, in Farmville.
   He was born November 28, 1939 in Andersonville, the son of the late Ernest Travis and Martha Bryant Christian. He was the husband of Anne Womack Christian.
   Mr. Christian was a carpenter and construction worker.
  In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Robert D. Christian and wife, Judy of Newport News, and Charles A. Christian of New Canton; daughters, Pamela A. Hartley and husband, Calvin of Cumberland, and Cathy L. Steward of Rice; brothers, Ernest J. Christian of New Canton, and Wayne Christian and wife, Peggy of Dillwyn; sister, Martha J. Clark and husband, Gene of Amelia; six grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
   A funeral service will be held Saturday, 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home with interment in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery.

   MAY 22 – Emma Lee Patteson, 86, of Farmville, died on Sunday, May 20, 2007.
   After graduating from Dillwyn High School in 1937 and a short career in banking, she devoted her life to caring for her family and serving the community. Mrs. Patteson was elected a Life Deacon in the Farmville Baptist Church, and also served on the board of directors of Holly Manor/Brookview Nursing Home.
   She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Dr. S. Cecil Patteson; a son, S.C. (Chuck) Patteson; a brother, J.H. Price Jr.; and three grandchildren, Ginger, Chad and Heather Patteson.
   She is survived by two daughters, Beverley Anne Klein and husband, Dr. David A. Klein, and Faye Green and husband, Dr. Charles R. Green, all of Farmville; a sister, Mrs. Willie C. (Kate) Reid of Lawrenceville; two brothers, William B. Price of Grafton, and Monroe Price of Buckingham; 11 grandchildren: Kristen, Chas, Ben and Aaron Green; Scott, Alex and Annie Snoddy; Emmalee Klein; Julia Patteson Garner; Caleb and Lydia Patteson; and two great-grandchildren, Davis Snoddy and Abigail Garner.
   The family will receive friends (tonight) Tuesday, 6:30-8, at the Puckett Funeral Home, Farmville.
   A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Farmville Baptist Church. There will be a private family interment.

Dies In Leesburg

   MIDDLEBURG, May 22 – Josephine Kemper Osborn Ashton, 93, of Leesburg, VA, entered the presence of Jesus Christ her Savior on Friday, May 18, 2007.
   Beloved wife for 58 years of the late James Ware ‘Roger’ Ashton, she was born July 1913 in Old Church, VA, the daughter of the Rev. Frank Wooten Osborn and Helen Pauline Morton.
   She was graduated from Mary Washington College and lived in Middleburg for more than 50 years. She taught at the Middleburg Elementary School and then served as an elementary supervisor for Loudoun County Schools.
   She was predeceased by a daughter, Frances Ware Ashton Baxter; two brothers, Asa Frank Osborn and John Morton Osborn; and three sisters, Bettie O. Crowder, Pauline O. Gaffin, and Cora O. Fry.
   She is survived by two daughters, Johelen Ashton Martin and husband, William of Altavista, and Janice Ashton Pinckney and husband, John III, of San Antonio, TX; and two sisters-in-law, Ann Walthall Osborn and Louise Ashton Welsh.
   Also surviving are six grandchildren, Michele Martin Grossman and husband, Robert; Josephine Kemper Pinckney Carrillo and husband, James; James Andrew Baxter, John McPherson Pinckney IV, Jessica Lee Baxter; and Marie Marfin Mitchell and husband, Wayne; eight great-grandchildren and numerous other devoted family members and loving caregiver, Charmaine Cohen.
   Funeral services were held May 21 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, Leesburg, where she was a faithful member. Interment was at Middleburg Memorial Cemetery.

   She was born May 15, 1914, in Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Rudolph and Theresa Pompe Seifert. She was the widow of George Schinabeck.
   She is survived by her children, Edward Schinabeck and wife, Priscilla, Thomas Schinabeck and Rita Marie Simchick; grandchildren, Mary Rita Kilhoffer, Wendy Barber, David Sim-chick, Kimberly White, Keith and Brian Schinabeck; great-grandchildren, Scott and Mark Zimmerman, Dylan, Morgan and Cole White, Shane and Shaylee Barber, Justin, Todd, Mitchell, LeAnn, Kevin and Jonathan Schinabeck; sisters, Rita and Gertrude Geyer; and daughter-in-law, Karen Schinabeck.
   She was preceded in death by her husband; sons, Robert and Joseph Schinabeck; sisters, Mildred Olzweiski and Alice Parrish, and son-in-law, Edward Simchick Jr.
   A funeral service was held Monday, May 21, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, in Farmville, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

   Glen M. Shaulis, 55, native of Maryland, died Sunday, May 6, 2007. Mr. Shaulis died unexpectedly after a short illness at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville.
   Survivors include his wife Veronica, son Daniel J.; daughter and son-in-law Angela M. and Daniel Beal and three grand-children, Tyra, Anna and Jett Beal; his father Frank; two brothers, Frank R. and Lonnie L. Shaulis and many nieces and nephews.
   A private memorial was held on May 12, at Virginia Beach.

Meherrin Area, Dies

   KEYSVILLE, May 17 — Ruby York Elliott Redmond, 91, formerly of Keysville, died Tuesday, May 8.
   Born on January 5, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Neva Riggins and L. L. Elliott of Meherrin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Redmond, and her daughter, Norma Redmond Hamlett.
   She is survived by her sister, Louise Elliott Nunnally of Burkeville.
   Mrs. Redmond led a very active life, having served as Assistant Postmaster in Meherrin for over 20 years and the treasurer of the Meherrin Baptist Church for nearly 50 years. She was also the co-author of a history of Meherrin.
   The funeral service will be private.

   CUMBERLAND, May 17 — Marion H. Meador Jr., 77, retired Postmaster of Cumberland, died Tuesday, May 15, 2007.
   He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Meador; three daughters, Linda M. Battle and husband Ronald of Powhatan, Karen M. Levin and husband Jeffrey of Richmond, Jennifer D. Meador and Frank Nicklis Jr., of Chesterfield; a sister, Dorothy M. King of Red Oak; three grandchildren, Jared, Bethany and Amy Levin.
   He was predeceased by one brother, Hunter R. Meador.

WILLIAM FREDERICK "RICKY" BALDWIN

Dies Saturday

   PAMPLIN, May 15 – William Frederick “Ricky” Baldwin, 61, died suddenly on Saturday, May 12, 2007. A lifelong resident of Pamplin, he was born May 6, 1946, to Charles U. and Ida Beatrice Baldwin, of Five Forks Road.
   Known to his family and friends as "Ricky", he was graduated from Prince Edward Academy in 1966 and volunteered for the Marine Corps in 1967.
   He served a tour with the Marines in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. Highly decorated, he earned among other distinctions, 44 flight medals for his service as Crew Chief and Tail Gunner on the Marines’ CH-46 helicopter with HMM-161.
   Returning home to Pamplin in 1970, he joined the Army National Guard later that year. His Guard service and regular work for Fort Pickett’s Mobilization and Training Equipment Site, as a Mechanic and Shop Supervisor, spanned 31 years. Although officially retired from the Guard in 1997, he continued working at Fork Pickett as a state employee until his death last Saturday.
   He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Hazel Newcomb Baldwin; two siblings, Charles Baldwin, of Lynchburg, and Carolyn Cash, of Farmville; two sons, Jeffrey D. Newcomb and Mark A. Newcomb; and three grandchildren, Travis McKenzie, Lucy Marie, and Aurelia Lea Newcomb. He will always be remembered for exemplifying the Marine Corps motto Semper Fidelis, in constantly setting forth an example of honor, discipline, devotion, and doing good for family, friends, and anyone he found in need of help. Requiescat in pacem.
   The family will receive friends at Shorter Funeral Home of Farmville (tonight) Tuesday, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
A graveside funeral service will be held at Olive Branch United Methodist Church, Prospect, on Wednesday, May 16, at 2 p.m.
