    DILLWYN, April 24 – Margaret Snead Seay, 93, of Dillwyn, passed away Monday, April 23, 2007.
    She was born February 17, 1914, the daughter of the late Sam and Rosa Snead of Fluvanna. She was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Franklin Seay; a daughter, Devilla Seay; sisters, Virginia Harris, Rebecca Glenn and Emma Woo; a brother, Samuel Snead and a son-in-law, Russell L. (Dick) Davis.
    She leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Judy S. Davis of Dillwyn and special friend, Bob Pace; a son, William Benjamin Seay of Mineral; a special friend, Shirley Dooling; a brother, William A. Snead and his wife, Frances of Ohio; grandchildren, Seay and Alice Davis of Arvonia, Carey and Debbie Davis, Frank Davis and Becky Goodwin, Bruce Davis, Christine and Steve Palmore, Billy and Tina Moss; great-grandchildren, Katie and Frankie Jennings, Jennifer and Jimmy Kirby, Dr. Lesley Davis, Cody and Brent Davis, Meredith and Lorraine Palmore, Kristin, Marsha and Jeannie Davis; two great-grandchildren, Langston and Julia Jennings.
    Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Fork Union Memorial Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Harlan S. White, 87
Of Keysville
Dies Friday

    KEYSVILLE, April 24 – Harlan S. White, 87, of Keysville, died Friday, April 20, 2007.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace L. White and daughter, Gail W. Boliek.
    He is survived by his daughter, Brenda W. Powell and son-in-law, Kelly C. Powell; one grandson, Ryan E. Powell; one granddaughter, Grace-Kelly Powell all of Keysville; his brother, Lloyd White of Farmville and his sister, Cleo Reno of Tennessee.
    Mr. White was born June 15, 1919 in Charlotte County and married Grace L. White on July 3, 1939. He served in the army during World War II for several years. He also worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company from 1939 to 1944. He began his present business in 1946 with the construction of small homes, beginning with his own home. The business grew and in 1958 he founded White’s Building and Supply, a family-oriented business.
    Harlan served on the Keysville Town Council from 1960 to 1970. He was a member and Master of the Keysville Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Volunteer Fire Department and Keysville Ruritan Club. He has been a member, Deacon and Clerk of Eureka Baptist Church for many years. He also served as a founder of Briery Country Club in Keysville. Harlan was a very special husband, father and grandfather. He will always be loved and remembered.
    Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at Eureka Baptist Church with the Rev. Aubrey Heath officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte County Rescue Squad or Eureka Baptist Church Cemetery Fund.

Grace Singletary, 86
Retired Office Manager
Dies Friday

    APRIL 24 – Grace Florence Davis Singletary, 86, of Farmville, passed away Friday, April 20, 2007 in Richmond.
    She was born August 30, 1920 in Newport News, the daughter of the late Fletcher Allen and Lora Roberts Davis. She was the widow of Walker Freeman Singletary.
    Mrs. Singletary was retired from Roses where she worked as an office manager for many years. She was a Deacon at Cumberland Presbyterian Church and a dedicated member of the Randolph District. Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary.
    She is survived by her daughters, Joyce Mitchell and her husband, Tony of Prospect, Carolyn Gills and her husband, Robert of Cartersville, Barbara Spillman and her husband, Billy Sr. and Sandy Spillman and her husband, Terry Sr. all of Farmville; ten grandchildren, Michelle Patterson, Keith Mitchell, Ryan and Jay Gills, Ashley G. Sloan, Billy Gene and Charlie Spill-man, Lara E. Irving, T. W. and Drew Spillman; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Floyd C. Davis of Port St. Lucie, Florida and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine D. Bollinger Vaughan, Lora D. Etling and Emily D. Roberts and four brothers, William Fletcher Davis and Herbert Allen Davis who were both killed in World War II, and Richard and Charles Davis.
    A funeral service was held 4 p.m. Sunday at Cumberland Presbyterian Church with interment in the church cemetery.
Memorial may be made to Cumberland Presbyterian Church or Randolph District Volunteer Fire Department.

Dies Saturday

    PAMPLIN, April 24 – John Oliver Howard, 90, of Pamplin, formerly of Abilene, was called home by his heavenly father Saturday, April 21, 2007.
    He was born January 7, 1917 in Boyd County, Kentucky, a son of the late Elisha Howard and Ida Mae Houston.
    Mr. Howard was a deacon at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church and a partner in Howard Brothers Sawmill and Dairy Farm.
    He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Winifred C. Howard; one daughter, Carol Richardson Puckett and husband, Thomas F. Puckett of Pamplin; four grandchildren, Dwayne Howard Mitchell of Lynchburg, Dana Carol Womack of Richmond, Talton Shane Richardson of Pamplin and Stacey Lynn Drinkard of Appomattox; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and one sister, Sophia Mae Cole. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence A. Howard and son-in-law, Edward T. Richardson.
    Funeral services were held 3 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

Dies Friday

    CUMBERLAND, April 24 – Sherry Ann O’Conner, 38, of Cumberland, died Thursday, April 19, 2007 in Lynchburg.
    Mrs. O’Conner was a billing consultant for Southside Community Hospital.
    She is survived by her husband, Larry O’Conner; one daughter, Angel Maxine O’Conner; two sons, William Cody Nolan and Jordan Nolan of Cumberland.
    Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville. Interment is private.

Obituary

George E. Galloway

    George E. Galloway, 84, educator and World War II veteran, died Tuesday, April 3, 2007 at the Heart and Vascular Institute of Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, after a short illness.
    Mr. Galloway lived with his wife Barbara in Farmville, since 1992 after relocating from Washington, DC upon the death of their daughter, Claudia G. Logan. They had been married for 58 years at the time of his death. He loved basketball and attended all the high school and college games in the Farmville area. He was an avid train enthusiast and loved fishing, golf and traveling after retiring from the Washington, D.C. Public School System.
Mr. Galloway was a graduate of Dunbar High School, Miner Teachers College and New York University. During his thirty years of employment in the District of Columbia. He was principal of Evans and Douglas Junior High Schools. He began his career as a history and geography teacher at Francis and Eliot Junior High Schools.
    A memorial service will be held in Washington, DC at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 27, 2007 at the First Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church, 602 N. Street, N. W.
   At his request, his remains were donated to Howard University College of Medicine. The George E. Galloway Scholarship Fund is being established for Dunbar High School in Washington D.C. Contributions to this fund will be greatly appreciated by the family.
    He leaves to mourn, his wife, Barbara G. Galloway; daughter, Carol G. Hurley of Farmville; five grandchildren, one great-grandson, two nieces, and one nephew, and a host of other relatives and friends.

John Benjamin Bateman, 93

Dies Thursday


    ARVONIA, April 19 – John Benjamin Bateman, 93, of Arvonia, died Thursday, April 19, 2007.
    He was born March 10, 1914, in Washington County, NC, the son of the late Benjamin Franklin Bateman and Marina Griffin Bateman.
    He is survived by his wife, Helen Watkins Bateman; two sons, John B. Bateman Jr., of Lafayfetta, AL, and Samuel L. Bateman, of Arvonia; a sister, Mary Frances Davenport, of Louisburg, NC; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia.
    The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Alice Brown Goin, 94
94, Of Appomattox
Dies Wednesday

    April 19 — Ruth Alice Brown Goin, 94, of 2777 Horseshoe Road, Appomattox, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at her home.
    Born November 25, 1912, in the Hollywood Community of Appomattox County, she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Mary Ruth Franklin Brown and the widow of DeWitt Talmadge Goin. Alice was a homemaker, a member of Walker’s Presbyterian Church, the Women of Walker’s Presbyterian Church and the Pamplin Home Demonstration Club.
    She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nan G. Farinholt; two grandchildren; two sisters, Eunice Goin and Idelle Scruggs; and three brothers, Berkley, Marvin (Billy) and Curtis Brown.
    She is survived by six sons and five daughters and their spouses, Joseph W. and Annie Goin all of Lynchburg, Katie G. and Wade Adams of Appomattox, Rachel G. and Marshall Harris of Manakin-Sabot, James Hunter and Elsa Goin of Paos, Costa Rica, Marshall D. and Carol Goin of Appomattox, Lester M. and Rebecca Goin of Cumberland, Mary G. and John Lucas of Richmond, Barbara G. and William W. Dickerson of Pamplin, Margaret G. and George Guido of Spotsylvania, Leon T. Goin, and Stephen T. and Susan Goin all of Appomattox; 31 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren.
    She is also survived by the children from the marriage of Dewitt and Katie, his first wife; Evie G. Harris of Lynchburg; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Conrad (Evelyn) Goin of Prospect; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grand-children; and 14 great-great grandchildren. They were preceded in death by sons, Frank, John, Conrad (Tom), and DeWitt Jr. Goin.
    Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Saturday, April 21, in Walker’s Presbyterian Church by the Reverends Mark Niederbrock, Millard Stimpson, Peyton Harris, and Jason Whitener. The pallbearers will be Gary Goin, Jack Goin, Johnny Goin, Kenneth Goin, Marvin Goin, and Michael Goin. Burial will follow in the Goin Family Cemetery.
The family invites friends and relatives to visit at the home on Friday, April 20, from 4 – 8 p.m.

    DILLWYN, April 19 – Louise Fair (Sookie) Taylor, 72, of Dillwyn, died Monday, April 16, 2007 at her home.
    She was born September 25, 1934, in Buckingham County, the daughter of the late John Miles and Louise Shumaker Miles. She was preceded in death by a son, L.C. Fair Jr.
    She is survived by her husband of 48 years, James A. (Jimmy) Taylor; two daughters, Donna Baldwin Dale and Robin Coffey; a brother, Junior John Miles; four grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

    BLACKSTONE, April 17 – SSGT Joseph Hoyt Rogers, US Army Ret., 63, of Blackstone, died Saturday, April 14, 2007.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Hoyt Rogers and Mary Leeanna Cabaness Rogers and a brother, Charles Rogers.
    He is survived by three children, Allison Heath and husband, John of Dewitt, Jeffrey Rogers of Blackstone, Karen Green and husband, Stephen of Sutherland; four grandchildren, Andrew Lloyd, Tyler Rogers, Carlyn Rogers, and Madison Rogers; brothers and sisters, Jimmie Rogers and wife, Catherine, William Rogers, Lillie Rubin and husband, Phil, Helen Rogers, Doris Dome, Samuel Rogers and wife, Ingrid, R. David Rogers and wife, Kathleen, and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Funeral services with full military honors will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 19, at the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia.

Dies Tuesday

     BETHESDA, MD, April 12 – Margaret L. Goodwin, 78, of Bethesda, Maryland, died on Tuesday, April 10, 2007 at Suburban Hospital.
     She was a retired Administrative Officer for the Bureau of Labor Statistics after 54 years of service. She also held a realtors license in Maryland. Mrs. Goodwin enjoyed reading, music, traveling and her family and friends. She was of the Methodist faith and attended Strayer College for two years.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Colmon O. Foster of Manassas; two brothers, Berman (Ruth) Scott of Chase City, and James (Betty) Scott of Brandon, FL; two grandchildren, Sherrye Rivera Montero and Colmon Scott Foster; four great-grandchildren, Aaron Michael, William Mason, Colmon Scott Jr. and Haley Marie Foster; and her very close friend, Dr. Sy Sunken.
     The family will receive friends at Pierce-Price Funeral Home, 9609 Center Street, Manassas, on Saturday, from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. at which time services will be conducted. Interment will be in Stonewall Memory Gardens.

     SELMA, NC, April 12 — Norma Boyette Radford, 89, died Tuesday, April 8, 2007 at her home in Scottsville, VA. Born July 12, 1917 in Johnston County she was a daughter of the late James Wiley and Ella Boykin Boyette. She was the widow of Oscar Lee Radford. She was a retired Johnston County school teacher and a member of the Selma Baptist Church.
     Mrs. Radford is survived by her sons, Rev. James O. Radford and wife, Teresa of Scottsville, and Norman D. Radford of Youngsville; daughter, Amy Rhea Mesloh and husband, Karl of Atlanta, GA; brother, Rudolph Boyette of Kenly; sisters, Marie B. Mitchell of Kenly and Betsy B. Boyette of Chicago, IL; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
    Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Rains Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church with her son, the Rev. James O. Radford and the Rev. Calvin Heath officiating with interment in the church cemetery.

Carl Leroy Rice, 52

     APRIL 12 – Carl Leroy Rice, 52, of the Abilene area, died Thursday, April 5, 2007 in Farmville.
     He was the son of the late John Lockett and Annie Rice.
     He was born May 21, 1954 in Prince Edward County. At an early age, he confessed Christ as his Savior, was baptized and joined the New Hope Baptist Church of Abilene. He received his education in the Prince Edward County Public Schools, graduating from R.R. Moton High School.
     He is survived by two brothers, John Rice and wife, America, of Farmville, and Paul Rice of Baltimore, MD; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
     A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 10, at New Hope Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. Reverend Louis C. Gould officiated and Bland-Reid Funeral Home of Farmville was in charge of services.

Ricky D. Thompson, 45
Of Sabina, Ohio
Dies In Auto Accident

     APRIL 12 – Ricky D. Thompson, 45, of Sabina, Ohio, died as a result of an auto accident.
     He was born in Bedford on March 17, 1962, the son of Major R. Thompson of Farmville and Lois G. Wickline Gutierrez of Sacramento, CA.
     Mr. Thompson graduated from Cumberland County High School in 1980. From 1980 until 1990 he served in the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Seymour-Johnson AFB in North Carolina and George AFB in California. From 1990 until present he was employed by ABX Air. In 1999 he joined the Ohio National Guard where he currently served at Springfield AB.
     He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Wilmington, OH, American Legion 49, Wilmington, Sabina Masonic Lodge 324 and the Sabina Moose Lodge. On September 19, 1987, he married Kari A. Thompson in Big Bear Lake in California.
     He is survived by his wife, Kari; daughter, Kayla L. Thompson; son, Benjamin J. Thompson; parents, Major and Gail Thompson, and Lois and Val Gutierrez; brother, Jerry Thompson, of Farmville; sister, Wanda Thompson, of La Mirada, CA; father-in-law, Gilbert Ziegler, of Waseca, MN; brother-in-law, Kris Ziegler, of Edina, MN; sister-in-law, Brenda Ziegler, of Rochester, MN; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grand-parents, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law.
     Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at the Faith Lutheran Church, Wilmington, OH, with interment at the Sabina Cemetery.
