Dies Saturday

   LYNCHBURG, March 13 - Marcus Cleveland Elcan Jr., of Lynchburg, died Saturday, March 10, 2007, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
   Born December 29, 1926 in Terre Haute, Indiana, he was the son of the late Marcus Cleveland Elcan Sr. and the late Marie Sheppard Jones Elcan. Both of his parents were natives of Buckingham County, to which the family returned a few years after his birth.
   He was graduated from Buckingham Central High School in 1944. Enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II, he received training at Penn State University and New York University, and served in the Army Signal Corps in the Aleutian Islands and in Alaska. Following discharge from the Army he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Penn State, and a master’s degree in public relations from Boston University.
   Almost all of his working career was devoted to industrial communications. He served from 1951 to 1953 as editor of The Dan River News for Dan River Mills in Danville, from 1953 to 1964 as editor of The Iron Worker for Lynchburg Foundry Company; and from 1966 to 1987 in various positions relating to employee and community communications and services for General Electric Company’s Lynchburg Plant. Upon his retirement from GE, he has served as editor, on a voluntary basis, of Lynch’s Ferry, official publication of the Lynchburg Historical Foundation.
   Mr. Elcan was a charter member of The Kirk at Forest, and served as ruling elder, as a Sunday school teacher, and on various committees. Other community interests included the Lynchburg Chapter of the National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ), and the Churches For Urban Ministry (C.U.M.) Timothy Program for inner-city children. In 1962 he was the recipient of the B’nai B’rith humanitarian man of the year award in Lynchburg.
   He was married in 1954 to Anita Spain, who survives him; a daughter, Martha Marie Elcan and her husband, Scott Guthrie of Van Nuys, CA and a daughter, Jeannette Elcan Arrington; a son, William Mark Elcan, and 12 grandchildren: Jason, Sean, Laurie, Nicole, Scott, and Katherine Elcan, and Heather, Jade Galen, Samantha, Dustin, and Caleb Arrington, and five great-grandchildren.
   A funeral service was held Monday at 7 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend James R. Dellert officiating. A private burial will take place at the Presbyterian Cemetery.

Sam Weddington
Held Monday

    ABINGDON, March 13 – Sam Weddington, Esq., beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed quietly with his family by his side at his home on Friday, March 9, 2007.
   He was born in Pikeville, KY, a son of the late Crit Weddington and Ella Stanley Weddington.
   Mr. Weddington attended Berea College in Berea, KY, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio University. He graduated from Appalachian School of Law in Grundy, with a J.D. degree, and he was a member of the Tennessee State Bar Association.
   He served as a lay pastor for many years, most recently in the Presbyterian Church USA. He was a member of Green Spring Presbyterian Church and was a very talented musician, sharing his gift through playing with the Green Spring Men.
   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Delsie Brunty Weddington; two sisters, Edith Lillian Weddington and Lorene Weddington Nunley; three step-brothers, Edgar Jr., Kenneth Ray and Hansford Brunty and one stepsister, Delores Sartain.
   Survivors include his wife, Dr. Deborah Lilly Weddington of Abingdon; two sons, Samuel T. Weddington and wife, Eungyoung Kim of Charlotte Court House and Robert Michael Weddington, Esq., and wife, Jennifer Lynn Weddington of Jonesville, NC; two grandchildren, Samuel Kwang Weddington and Joan Young-Ji Weddington; seven sisters, Gladys Runyon of Aurora, CO, Fay (Wayne) Black-burn of Sidney, KY, Phyllis (Gene) Music of Portage, MI, Mable (Robert) Kitchen of Bethel, OH, Ernestene (Joe B.) Varney of Sidney, KY, Kaye Gutowski of Daytona Beach, FL and Sue (Richard) Kupchunas of Ormond Beach, FL; two broth-ers, Russell (Janet) Weddington of Farmville and Buddy (Deloris) Weddington of Columbus, OH; four stepsisters, Mary Cleghon and Stella (Jack) DePue both of Elizabeth, WV, Rebecca Stacy of Circleville, OH and Linda Scott of Madison Heights, MI; three stepbrothers, Paul (Mary) Brunty of Dayton, OH, Elton Brunty and Noah (Martha) Brunty of Myrtle Beach, SC.
   Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Monday at Green Spring Presbyterian Church. The service was led by his son and daughter-in-law, Samuel T. Weddington and Eungyoung Kim, pastors in the Presbyterian Church. Entombment followed at Colonial Chapel Mausoleum at Forest Hills Memory Gardens.

   MARCH 13 – Janice Arlene Pence, 58, of Farmville, wife of James E. Pence, went to her home in heaven, Sunday, March 11, 2007.
   She was born in Dunns, WV but raised her daughters in Fairfax County. She and her husband and best friend, James “Jim” Pence made their home in Farmville in 1999 following their retirement. Janice worked for Verizon for 30 years, beginning as an operator and advancing through management. She was one of the first female “Frame Hops”.
   She is survived by her husband, Jim; former husband and friend, John Anderson; mother, Violet Martin (Phil); daughters, Shannon Redwine (Bruce) and Tania Horne (Michael); brothers, Tracy Richmond and Edward Rogerville; grandsons, Elijah and Aaron Redwine; niece, Sharon Richmond; nephews, Edward Jr., John and Nicholas Rogerville; numerous loving relatives and friends; special friends include, Mary McCabe, JoLeslie Shaw, Dave and Janet Kyle and Carolyn Anderson. She was preceded in death by her father, Toye and her beloved stepfather, John “Pops” Rogerville and her grandparents.
   Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Westview Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

William H. Reynolds II, 62

Native, Dies Saturday

CHESTERFIELD, March 13 – William Henry Reynolds II, 62, of Chesterfield, passed away, Saturday, March 10, 2007.
He was born November 15, 1944 in Prince Edward County, the son of the late Woodrow Howard and Pauline Reid Reynolds.
Mr. Reynolds was retired from the Department of Taxation.
He is survived by a brother, Morris Reynolds and his wife, Victoria of Charlottesville and their children, Nicholas and Tiffany Reynolds of Charlottesville; a sister-in-law, Martha K. Reynolds of Chesapeake; numerous cousins and his beloved cat “Missy”. He was preceded in death by a brother, Sydney Shannon Reynolds.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Westview Cemetery.

Luke F. Lanigan
Of Keysville
Dies March 7

   KEYSVILLE, March 13 – Luke F. Lanigan, of Keysville, died Monday, March 7, 2007.
   He was born March 1, 1914 in Dorchester, MA, graduated from Mechanical Arts High School in Qunicy, and attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the US Army Cavalry and retired from Fore River Shipyard after World War II. While at the shipyard, Mr. Lanigan designed communications systems for the US Navy war ships.
   He is survived by four children, Luke R. Lanigan III of San Antonio, TX, Mary L. Briant of Gainesville, FL. Michael Joseph Lanigan of Flagstaff, AZ and Thomas Louis Lanigan of Keysville; three grandchildren, William Briant of Cape Coral, FL, Scott Briant of Gainesville, FL and Kelly Hewitt of Cocoa Beach, FL and six great-grandchildren, William Briant IV of Cape Coral, FL, Sadie Hewitt, Moey Hewitt and Althea Hewitt of Cocoa Beach, FL, Hannah Briant and Phobe Briant of Gainesville, FL. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Jenkins.
   Mr. Lanigan was an avid college sports fan and strong sup-porter of the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Title IX for equality in women’s college sports.

   DILLWYN, March 13 – John Murtha Adams, 67, of Dillwyn, died Friday, March 9, 2007 at his home.
   He was born August 26, 1939 in Atlanta, GA, the son of Murtha Wilder Adams of Albany, GA and the late Emmett B. Adams Jr.
   In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Denise W. Adams of Dillwyn; two children, Heather Troyer of Tappan, NY and Johathan Adams of Chicago, IL; four sisters, Eve Adams, Carolyne Day, Marnie Gehrken and June Robinson and one brother, David Adams.
   A memorial service was held 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) at Browns Chapel United Methodist Church with interment in Albany, GA on Thursday.

    She is survived by a sister, Jane Barr Chapman of Farmville; loving niece and caregiver, Diane Jenkins and Family of Rice; a brother-in-law, Cecil East and wife, Peggy of Farmville; two granddaughters, Kathy Robertson of Roanoke and Delores Hess of Vinton; six great-grandchildren, Kristopher Hale, Soma Amos, Tabitha Allen, Johnathon Allen, Samantha Robertson and Markie Robertson; five great-great-grandchildren, Kole Hale, Melody Hale, Kadence Hale, Nolon Allen and Rylee Allen and numerous loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet East St. John.
    Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Westview Cemetery.
    The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
