    CULLEN, March 6 – Larry L. Kanniard, 62, of Cullen, died Thursday, March 1, 2007 in Farmville.
    He was born September 27, 1944 in Ohio, the son of Eva Jacobs Kanniard and the late Lee Kanniard.
    In addition to his mother, he is survived by two daughters, Sheri Kanniard and Jennifer Kanniard; two sons, Chris Kanniard and Shawn Kanniard all of Wall Township, New Jersey; three sisters, Hazel Farley, Francis Howard and Charlotte Life and nine grandchildren.
    A memorial service was held 11 a.m. Monday at Spring Creek Baptist Church in Darlington Heights.

Dies Friday

    MARCH 6 – Lema K. Crump, 78, of Farmville, died Friday, March 2, 2007 in Dillwyn.
    She was born July 17, 1928 in Halifax County, the daughter of the late Frank E. Francis and Elsie Booth Francis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray F. Crump and Fred Slemp.
    She is survived by her daughters, Linda Crump and Mary Presnell of Farmville; step-daughters, Frances Marston of Richmond, Dorothy Carter and Elsie Snyder both of Mechanicsville; stepsons, Frank Crump of Luther Glen and Thomas Crump of Mechanicsville; 20 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
    Funeral services were held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Concord Baptist Church, with interment in the church cemetery.

S. R. “Boo” Scott, 70
Former Resident
Dies in Florida

    WINTER HAVEN, FL, March 6-- Samuel Ray “Boo” Scott, 70, of Winter Haven, FL, passed away Saturday, March 3, 2007 at his residence due to a long battle with cancer.
    Samuel was born March 6, 1936 to Mason and Elizabeth Scott in Saxe, Charlotte County, and grew up in Farmville. He was a graduate of Winter Haven High School, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was the owner of Scott’s Shell and U-Haul in Winter Haven. Mr. Scott was also a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Auburndale, FL where he was a former member of the Board of Directors, Assistant Treasurer and served as an usher. He was also a former member of the Civitan Club, Gideon Intl. and the Winter Haven Board of Realtors.
    Mr. Scott is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Benjamin Scott and Charles Scott and a sister, Carolyn Scott.
    He is survived by his wife, Mary F. Scott; a son, Samuel R. ”Scotty” (Alison) Scott Jr. of Tampa, FL; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Scott of Sacramento, CA; two brothers, Berman (Ruth) Scott of Chase City, and James (Betty) Scott of Brandon, FL; a sister, Margaret Goodwin of Bethesda, MD; and a grandson, Samuel R. “Boo” Scott, III.
    The family will receive friends Tuesday, March 6, from 5 p.m. till 7 p.m. at Oak Ridge Funeral Care, 2425 Havendale Blvd., Winter Haven, FL.
    Funeral Services will be held at 4 p.m., Wednesday, March 7, at the First Missionary Baptist Church of Auburndale with the Rev. David Gurgel officiating. Interment will be Saturday in the Trinity Memorial Gardens in Farmville at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Fred Marvel, of Roanoke, officiating. Family and friends are invited.

    DILLWYN, March 6 – Peter Donald Reid, 71, of Dillwyn, passed away Sunday, March 4, 2007 at his residence.
    He was born February 29, 1936 in Henderson, North Caroina, the son of the late Furnie and Esther Hinton Reid.
    He is survived by his sons, Scott of Chesterfield, Eric of Richmond and Michael Sean of Amelia; his daughter, Cindy Reid of Richmond; his brothers, Leonard Moss Jr. of Wilmington, North Carolina; his sister, Sandra Reid Gentry of Upsilarti, MI; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Reid Collier and his great-grandson.
    Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel United Methodist Church in Dillwyn, with interment in the family cemetery.

    MARCH 6 – Stanislaus (Klaus) Jania, of Saratoga Springs, NY, formerly of Glen Cove, NY, died suddenly Sunday, March 4, 2007.
    “Klaus” was retired from Roslyn Public School District. He loved the sport of soccer and was a long time standing member of the Glen Cove Men’s Soccer League.
    He is survived by his daughters, Wanda (Thompson) Burling and her husband, Charles and Deana Bennett and her husband, David of Farmville and six grandsons, Elia Filippone, Daniel Filippone, Jamie Womack, Nicholas Filippone, Justin Womack and Kevin Jania.
    A graveside service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Memorial Gardens.
    The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Puckett Funeral Home, with a Wake service starting at 8 p.m.

French (Anita); six grandchildren, Monica Rowan Park, Trey Rowan, HA French, Rob French, Jason French and Neal French; 13 great-grandchildren, Andrew, Alaina, Juliana, Lucas, Therie, Billy, Kelly, Thomas, Chase, John, Sarah Jane, Sierra and Cheyenne; her sister and best friend, Sue Woodson; brother John Berger of Haymarket; many nieces, nephews and friends and her special caregivers, Lorraine Stinnett, and Erma Richer for their care and love.
    Mrs. French was a lifelong member and elder of Center Presbyterian Church.
    A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 8 at Payne Memorial Methodist Church at 2 p.m. The family will greet friends immediately following the service.

Juan José Milian

    FLORIDA, March 1 – Juan José Milian, of Miami, Florida, brother of Dr. Maria Milian Silveira, of Farmville, was killed by a truck two blocks from his home.
    Mr. Milian was the owner and president of O.A.M. Clothes Factory.
    In addition to his sister, he is survived by his wife, Gisela Ladron De Guevara and three children, Orlando Andres, Jose and Maria Del Rosario and two grandchildren.

Daniel Pendergrass, 43
University Educator
Dies January 28

    MARCH 1 – Daniel Newell Pendergrass, 43, died Sunday, January 28, 2007, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The cause of death was a heart attack.
    He was born in Springfield, Missouri, on December 26, 1963, the second child of Jessie Newell Pendergrass and Hubert Ansel “Red” Pendergrass.
    Mr. Pendergrass graduated from Scottsboro High School in 1981. From 1982 to 1985 he worked as a reporter for The Daily Sentinel newspaper in Scottsboro, Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama in Huntsville, graduating in 1990 with a degree in Communications. From 1991 to 1993 he served in the United States Peace Corps, teaching high school on the island of Ulithi in the Federated State of Micronesia.
    After completing his Peace Corps service, Mr. Pendergrass pursued a career as a teacher and a writer. From 1994 to 1995 he worked in the Los Angeles school system. From 1995 to 1997 he worked as an English language instructor at a private academy in Ulsan, South Korea. He returned to the United State in 1998 to further his education, earning a Masters Degree in English, with distinction, from the University of Alabama in Huntsville in 1999. He returned overseas in 2000, teaching at Koc University in Istanbul, Turkey until 2004, and then at the American University in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he was employed at the time of his death.
    His first book of poetry, 23 Istanbul Karabitsim was published in 2006 by Arabesques Press. He also had published numerous poems and travel pieces in literary journals and on the internet.
    Mr. Pendergrass is survived by his brother, Marcus Hubert Pendergrass and a sister-in-law, Leigh Lunsford.
    A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 17, at the Goosepond Plantation Club House in Scottsboro, Alabama.

Edward J. Lord, 89

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, March 1- Edward Joseph Lord, 89, of Charlottesville, died on Thurs-day, February 22, 2007 in a local care facility.
    Born March 20, 1917 in Marshall, Minnesota, he was the son of the late George Lord and Anna Gossen Lord. He was also preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.
    Edward was a graduate of the University of South Dakota where he met and married Sylvia Hallstrom. A Captain in the U. S. Army during WW II, he served in the European and Pacific Theaters. Previously he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years.
    Employed by Central Telephone Company for 35 years, he served as the District Plant Superintendent for 19 years in Farmville, moved to Charlottesville in 1965 as Division Plant Manager, and retired in 1982.
    He was a Rotary Club member and Paul Harris Fellow for 40 years. He was also an active member of the American Legion Post 74 and the Charlottesville Senior Center where he was active in aerobics, line dancing, golf, investment club, poker club, computer club, building and grounds committee, and the Senior Council.
    Surviving him are his wife of over 60 years, Sylvia Lord, of Charlottesville and his daughter, Anna Vascott and her husband, Douglas Bryant, of Alexandria..
    A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 3 in the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Samuel Massey officiating. Final disposition will be private.

   CUMBERLAND, Feb. 27 – The Rev. Jess Griffin, 85, of Cumberland, died Monday, February 26, 2007 in Farmville.
    He was the husband of Virginia Ruth Griffin.
   He had six children; three daughter, Barbara Sue Cline and her husband, Marcell of Cherokee, NC, Phyllis Ann Meinhard of Cumberland and Patricia Ann Armes and her husband, Walter of Cumberland; three sons, James Allen Griffin of Cumberland, Billy Joe Griffin and his wife, Susan of Richmond and David Lee Griffin and his wife, June of Powhatan; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Penny Skittlethorp Heigl, 30

Dies Feb. 12

    SUFFOLK, Feb. 27 – Penny Skittlethorp Heigl, 30, formerly of Farmville, passed away, Mon-day, February 12, 2007 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, after many years of illness. Although Penny had survived cancer at 16, bilateral hip replacement at 19 and a heart transplant at 25, her body finally just gave out.
    She was born January 14, 1977 at Norfolk General and is survived by her loving husband, Robert A. Heigl III; her mother, Carlie Ann Duckworth; a brother, William Carl Duckworth and many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends who stood by her during her long battles with illness and disease. She was predeceased by her loving grandfather and grand-mother, Gerald and Lelia Bass.
    As per Penny’s request, her body has been donated to science in the hope that knowledge may be gained to help keep someone else from suffering as she did so much of her life.
    A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life, Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m. at Liberty Springs Christian Church on Route 13 in Suffolk. At her request, dress casual and please, no flower arrangements.

    DILLWYN, Feb. 27 – Elizabeth O’Bryant Newton, 90, of Dillwyn, passed away Friday, February 23, 2007.
    She was preceded in death by two husbands, John O’Bryant and Ralph R. Newton; two sisters, Tiny Staton and Minnie Lee Newton and a special great-nephew, Lynn Price.
    She is survived by twin sons, John O’Bryant and wife, Diane of Buckingham and Julian O’Bryant and wife, Anne of Charlotte, NC; a granddaughter, Julie O’Bryant of Richmond; special nieces, Stella Price, Barbara LeSueur and Freida Hensley; great-nieces, Sue Jones and Angela Saxon and a great-nephew, Jimmy Price.
    Mrs. Newton was a life long member of Bethlehem Baptist Church where she served many years as a Sunday School teacher and treasurer of the WMU. She was a loving mother, grandmother and aunt. She worked for a number of years as a babysitter to children in the community and will be fondly remembered by them as “Nanny Newton”.

Duncan and wife, Betty Jane and Robert Duncan, all of Columbia; brother-in-law, Stanley F. Scott of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren, Lisa S. and her husband, William Richter of Powhatan, Kendall Stokes of Richmond, Jacob Stokes of Hampden-Sydney College, Stuart, Archer and Andrea Lyster, all of Charlottesville; great-granddaughter, Berkeley Richter; many nieces and nephews; and a special cousin, Patsy B. Hallett of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Florence Dun-can; and sister, Dorothy Mae Scott.
    Mr. Duncan was part owner of P.L. Duncan and Sons, Inc. and owner of W.E. Duncan Trucking, Inc. He was a member of the 176th Heavy Mortar R.C.T. of the Virginia National Guard for six years and active duty for six months at Fort Jackson and Fort Knox. He was dedicated to his church, Oak-wood United Methodist.

    LOUISIANA, Feb. 22 - Charles Nicholas “Nick” Garrett, 59, formerly of Farmville, died Saturday, February 17, 2007 at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital, Lake Charles, Louisiana.
    Born August 18, 1947, he was the son of the late Harold Lee and Helen Morgan Garrett.
    A graduate of Prince Edward Academy, he served his country in the U. S. Navy.
    He is survived by two daughters; Deborah Lee Fabrizio of Orlando, Florida and Wendy Elizabeth Bates of Bloomington Illinois; three brothers and sisters-in-law; Harold Morgan and Nadine Garrett of Farmville, David L. Garrett of Farmville, and Randy V. and Roxanne Garrett of Richardson, Texas; three grandchildren; four nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas A. Garrett.
    In accordance with Mr. Garrett’s wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial service.
