Dies in Tennessee
TENNESSEE, Feb. 6 - Edward Underwood "Ned"
Elam, died Friday, February 2, 2007 at his home in Kingsport, Tennessee.
He was born August 14, 1922 in Prince Edward County. At the age of
15, he graduated from Darlington Heights High School, and age 16 entered
Virginia Polytechnic Institute graduating at age 19. He entered the U. S. Army
as a 2nd Lieutenant and served four years in the Coast Artillery, being
discharged as a Captain in March of 1946.
Mr. Elam went to work at Tennessee Eastman Company as a research
chemist on April 1, 1946, and retired as a research associate on April 1, 1986.
He was the author of several patents during this period and was instrumental in
the development of Eastman's Optical Brighteners.
Ned was a communicant of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he had
served as a vestryman and an usher and was a past treasurer of the day school.
Most recently, he assisted in a minor capacity with the St. Paul's food pantry.
He was a 60-year member of the American Chemical Society and a full
member and past president of the East Tennessee Society of Sigma XL
Other accomplishments include serving on the Board of Bays Mountain
Park Association and for several years serving as treasurer of the Southern
Appalachian Highlands Conservancy. He volunteered for the Kingsport Public
Library and was a dedicated driver for the Shepherd Center in Kingsport.
Preceding him in death were his parents, a daughter, Barbara Brooks
Elam West and a grandson, Richard West.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Betty Deuel Cock Elam of
Kingsport; three daughters, Mrs. Malcolm (Anne Deuel) De'Ath of Harrow, England,
Mrs. Al (Betsy) Lookofsky of Shelbyville, Illinois and Mrs. Jim (Judy) Skelly of
Northolt, England; seven grandchildren, Walt and Alice Lookofsky, Jacqui and
Jean Skelly, Sarah De'Ath, Edward Brooks West and his wife, Lauren, Stuart West
and his fiancée, Hilary Smith; a great-grandson, Samuel Edward West;
granddaughter-in-law, Tobee Douglas West and a great-step-granddaughter, Jessica
Douglas.
Funeral services were held Sunday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Graveside services were held 4 p.m. Monday at Olive Branch United
Methodist Church Cemetery, Prospect, by the Rev. Michael B. Ferguson.

64, of Prospect, died Sunday, February 4, 2007 in Farmville.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Brisentine; two daughters, Vicky
Sisson and husband, Winton of Rice and Cindy Fulk and husband. Brent of
Prospect;
one son, Robert N. Brisentine Jr. of Prospect; one grand-child, Crystal Tappen
and husband, Kevin of Hampden-Sydney; four great-grandchildren. Erica, Amber,
Stephanie and Sabrina; one brother, Charlie Brisentine and wife, Brenda; one
sister. Charlotte Brisentine and nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Prospect United
Methodist Church with Interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service at

FEBRUARY 1 - Nettle Norton Griffo, 82, of
Birmingham, Alabama, formerly of Avondale Estates, Georgia, died Tuesday,
January 30, 2007.
She was born June 18, 1924 to James Norton and Lilly Hamlett Norton
in Nottoway. She was the seventh of ten children. Her husband, Christopher A.
Griffo, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Griffo was a graduate of Crewe High School. She was a longtime
member and Sunday School teacher at Columbia Drive Baptist Church and retired
after many years of service from the Internal Revenue Service.
She is survived by her son, James C. Griffo (Laura) and
grandchildren, James Mark Griffo and Lisa Michelle Griffo.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons
at 2 p.m. Saturday. Dr. J. Don Aderhold officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 7 at 10 a.m. at
Doyne-Burger Davis Funeral Home, Farmville, followed by a graveside service at
11 a.m. at Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Clifton L. Wiseman

Dies Sunday
BUCKINGHAM, Jan. 30 - Clifton Landis
Wiseman, of Buckingham, died Sunday, January 28, 2007 at McGuire Veteran Affairs
Medical Center in Richmond.
Born June 9, 1919, Mr. Wiseman was a World War II veteran, an avid
bird enthusiast and a longtime member of Maysville Presbyterian Church. He was
preceded in death by his loving wife, Florence L. Wiseman.
He is survived by his sister, Juanita Dunkum of Mechanicsville; his
brother, Herbert Wiseman of Buckingham; his children, John C. Wiseman of
Buckingham, Patricia W. Kite of Richmond and Sheila S. Austin of North Carolina
and his grandchildren, Debbie Wiseman, Angle Overstreet, Wendy Posenau, Sarah K.
McDonald, George P. Kite III and USMC 2nd Lt. John R. Kite.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m.
at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Maysville
Presbyterian Church in Buckingham. Interment will follow in the Buckingham
Community Cemetery.

Farmville, passed away Monday, January 29, 2007 at his home.
He was preceded in death by his wife, India Wilson Meadows and two

He is survived by one daughter, Joan Meadows Garrett and husband,
Bernard of Farmville; two sons, Lynn Meadows and wife, Sylvia of Blackstone and
Marvin Meadows and wife. Nancy of Farmville; daughter-in-law, Linda Meadows of
Farmville; six grandchildren, Adam Garrett of Farmville, Ryan and Lacey Meadows
of Blackstone, Dean and Dustin Meadows and Kevin Meadows of Farmville; five
sisters, Goldzsie Lee Cabell, Maebelle Cook, Frances Keller, Connie Scott and

DILLWYN, Jan. 30 - Jean Murphy Poff, 56,
of Dillwyn, formerly of Midlothian, went to be with her Lord on Friday, January
26, 2007 after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
She was preceded in death by her younger brother, Harry Lynn
Murphy, her father, Robert E. Murphy S. and her niece, Tammy M. Jamerson.
She is survived by her husband, Justice Richard H. Poff Sr.; her
mother, Mildred M. Murphy; her brother, Robert E. Murphy Jr. and his wife,
Frances; two great friends, Toni Bufano and Martha Michaels whom she cherished
as her "friends forever", and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins
and friends she claimed as the best family anywhere.
A funeral service was held Monday at 2 p.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home,
Dillwyn, with interment in the Dillwyn Town Cemetery.

H. Jamerson and wife, Aide of Gloucester, Billie B. Jamerson of Gloucester,
Peggy J. Timberlake and husband. French of Cumberland; granddaughter, Amy J.
Baber and husband. Tony of New Kent, whom she raised; sister. Ruby Skinner of
North Carolina; 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and numerous
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at Grove Methodist Church,
Sunnyside, Cumberland, with interment in the church cemetery.

JANUARY 25 - Sarah McCraw Anderson,
77, of Farmville, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007.
She was born in Cumberland County on April 3, 1929, the
daughter of the late Francis Dancy and Quinton Hebditch McCraw.
In 2004, Mrs. Anderson was inducted into the National
Jousting Hall of Fame.
She is survived by her husband, Frank Carlis Anderson; two
daughters, Sarah "Kate" Kathryn Spry and husband, Thomas A. of Farmville and
Elizabeth Carlis Dansberger and husband, Paul of Crewe; four grandchildren,

FOREST, Jan. 25 - Clarence Eugene
Firebaugh, 73, of Forest, died Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at his residence.
Born May 30, 1933 in Roanoke, he was the son of the late
Clarence Earl and Lucille Carper Firebaugh.
Mr. Firebaugh was a member of E.A.A., the Telephone Pioneers
and St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy D. Firebaugh; two
daughters, Shonna F. McIver and husband, Glenn of Lynchburg and Krista F. Jacobs
and husband, Bobby of Farmville; three grandchildren, Ian McIver, Evan McIver
and Trent Jacobs and a sister, Josephine F. Collins of Roanoke. He was preceded
in death by his first wife, Peggy Sue Firebaugh.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Andrew
Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charles B. Willoughby and the Rev. David C.
Etheridge officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from
7 to 8:30 p.m. at Diuguid Waterlick Chapel, Lynchburg.
