Virginia Dayre Noble Dearing
Vaughan, 92, of Farmville, died Tuesday, January 9, 2007.
She was born January 24, 1914 in Amelia County, a daughter of
the late Charles Irving Noble Sr. and Mary Vaughan Noble. She was preceded in
death by husbands, Bennie Millard "Red" Dearing and Stanley Thomas Vaughan. She
is survived by a daughter, Jo Dearing Smith of Farmville.
Mrs. Vaughan was a graduate of Burkeville High School and
Smithdeal Business College in Richmond. She was employed as a bookkeeper at T.
J. Sampson Community Hospital in Glasgow, Kentucky when she met and married her
first husband, father of her only child. She later worked at Southside Community
Hospital and Davidson's Department Store in Farmville.
In 1951 she began working as deputy treasurer of Prince
Edward County and in 1963 she was elected as the first female treasurer of the
county and the first woman to hold a county office in its over 200 year history.
She defeated her male opponent in July, 1963 Democratic primary by a margin of
over four to one. She retired in 1975.
Mrs. Vaughan was a life member of Bethel United Methodist
Church in Amelia County, where she served for over 30 years as church treasurer
and was also charge treasurer. She was a member of the women's society of both
Bethel and Farmville United Methodist churches.
Mrs. Vaughan had received her 50-year membership pen from
Pamplln Chapter #58, Order of the Eastern Star where she served as secretary for
28 years. She was a past appointed Grand Officer of the Grand Chapter of
Virginia serving as Grand Martha.
She was also a former member of the Judith Randolph-Longwood
Chapter, NSDAR and served for many years as treasurer of the Prince Edward
Chapter of the American Red Cross.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by three
grandchildren, Debra S. Fitzgerald and husband, David of Glen Allen, John
Marshall Smith Jr. and wife, Beth and Millard Todd Smith all of Cumberland along
with their children, Cary and Emily Fitzgerald, Mary Katherine, Hannah and twins
Jordan and Cat Smith.
Other survivors include her brothers, Charles I. Noble Jr.
and wife, Dollie of Farmville and B. Vaughan Noble and wife, Ruth of Richmond,
She was predeceased by four sisters and a brother.
A memorial service will be held at Bethel United Methodist
Church, Amelia County, on Saturday, January 13 at 3 p.m. Friends are invited to
visit after the services. Interment will be private.

JANUARY 11 - Edna Bowman Hart, 96,
of Farmville, formerly of Powhatan, widow of R. D. Hart, died Monday, January 8,
2007. She was preceded in death by her husband, R. D. Hart.
She is survived by two sons, Marvin R. McCabe and wife, Peggy
of North Carolina and Gene W. McCabe and wife, Sybil of Farmville; sisters. Ivy
Anderson, Ada Ritchie; brother, Theodore Bowman; five grandchildren, Chris
Costello, Wayne McCabe, Ronnie McCabe, Elizabeth Baker, Michelle McCabe; eight
great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. today (Thursday) at the
Bennett & Barden Funeral Home, Powhatan, with interment in Greenwood Memorial
Gardens.

Sr., 90, of Cumberland, died Sunday, January 7, 2007 in a Richmond hospital.
He was born February 14, 1916 in Maryland, the son of the
late William Pennington Rowan and Helen Spear Rowan. He was the widower of Verna
Speas Rowan.
Mr. Rowan was World War II Army veteran and a retired mail
carrier.
He is survived by a son, Harry C. Rowan Jr. of Richmond;
three daughters, Jean R. Hudgins of Arvonia, Julia R. Baird and June R. Whaley
both of Dillwyn; a sister, Jennie Wolfe of Wilmington, DE; ten grandchildren and
ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Oak Grove
Baptist Church, Cumberland, with interment in the church cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Nannie Trent Lewis; a

DeLonte and KeAundra Bolden; two brothers, Charles Lewis (Shirley) of Goochland
and Joseph Lewis of Richmond; two sisters, Virginia Morris of Louisa and Eva
Washington of Richmond; a father-in-law, Floyd Trent Sr.; three aunts; four
uncles; three sisters-in-law, Susie Robinson, Lucy Barley (Randall) and Ethel
Goodman; two brothers-in-law, Floyd Trent Jr. (Lottie) and John Trent Sr.
(Shirley); numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, two devoted, Joe Lewis and the
Rev. Robert Payne; friends, two devoted, William and Doris Jackson of
Pennsylvania.
His remains rest at Marian Gray Thomas Funeral Home,
Cumberland.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Center
Union Baptist Church, Cumberland, with the Rev. Stevie Trent, pastor,
officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Jordan Jr., of Farmville, died Monday, January 8, 2007.
Born May 30, 1918 in Alamance County, North Carolina, he was
the son of the late Noah Gilmer Jordan Sr. and Ollie Davis Jordan.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Pendergraph Jordan;
daughters, Brenda Joyce and her husband, Gilbert Mattox of Omaha, NE, Elizabeth
Irene and her husband, Joseph Anzalone of Boca Raton, FL; two sisters, Gwendolyn
Jordan Hill of Morganton, NC and Eva Jordan Corner of Graham, NC; five
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; three
step-grandsons and two great-step-grandchildren.
Mr. Jordan retired from Carpenters Local #1665 in Alexandria.
He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps for 18 months in 1933-1934.
He was a lifetime member of the National Association of Civilian Conservation
Corps.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel
of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from
6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert Edward Taylor, 87

Dies on Thursday
A funeral service for Robert Edward
Taylor, 87, of Farmville, was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Johns Memorial Episcopal
Church in Farmville, with interment in Westview Cemetery.
One of the most influential citizens in Farmville for well over
half a century, Mr. Taylor died Thursday afternoon, January 4, 2007, at his
home, after several years of declining health.
A native of Prospect where his family was in the mercantile and
lumber business, he was born in Richmond, June 4, 1919. In spite of a childhood
illness that left him with less than one kidney Mr. Taylor lived a long and
active life. He was not eligible for service during World War II.
A life-long resident of Prince Edward County, he was graduated from
Farmville High School and attended Hampden-Sydney College where he was a member
of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Mr. Taylor was President and CEO of Taylor Manufacturing Co., Inc.,
building homes, schools and commercial buildings throughout the State of
Virginia. His "Taylor-Made Homes" were a staple for Prince Edward and
surrounding counties. Having a love for working with wood and the sawmill
industry, he was a lumberman from his 20s until his late 60s.
He was an avid cattle farmer, enjoying the out-of-doors and
entertaining guests at the family farm, Feather-Fin, now owned by the VA Dept.
of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Mr. Taylor was the last surviving founder of the Prince Edward
School Foundation, establishing Prince Edward Academy, now Fuqua School.
He was a member of Johns Memorial Episcopal Church where he served
as choir member for many years, a vestry member, senior warden and Junior
warden.
Mr. Taylor was a member of the Prince Edward Historical Society and
was a virtual wealth of knowledge regarding the history of Prince Edward County.
Mr. Taylor was famous for his sense of humor and talent for story telling.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth "Betty-Baldwin
Taylor; his son, Robert "Bob" E. Taylor Jr. and his wife, Martha of Farmville;
his daughters, Caroline Taylor Stowers and her husband, Alan of Richmond and
Elizabeth Taylor Carter and her husband, Baxter of Farmville; and his
grandchildren, Ellen Carter Taylor, Harriet Johns Taylor, Robert Carlsen Stowers
and James Baxter Carter Jr.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Johns Memorial Episcopal
Church or the Fuqua School.

SCOTTSVILLE, Jan. 9 - Lular Moore Parson, of Scottsvllle, departed this life on
Tuesday, January 2, 2007.
She was born on January 3, 1932 in Loudoun County to the late Herbert and Sadie
Moore. Lular was the devoted wife of the Reverend Robert Roosevelt Parson for 51
years.
From the loving union were born four daughters and one son. Melody Day (Philip)
of Charlottesville, Monica Parson, Ed. D. of Lynchburg, Merisa Davis (Marc) of
Lilburn, GA, Martika Gartman, Esq. (Randy) of Westmont, IL and Mark Parson
(Rhonda) of Richmond. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Charissa and
Marc Davis; three sisters, Dulcie Brown of Washington, DC, Christine Cruse of
Laurelton, NY and Thurnell Levenberry (Bobby) of Falls Church; five brothers,
Otis Moore, Thames (Eloise) Moore and Elder Kemith Moore of Washington, DC, the
Reverend Glandwood (Evelyn) Moore and the Reverend Odell (Geneva) Moore of
Middleburg and a host of nieces, nephews and dear friends, in particular Evelyn
and Willis Jones of Keene. She was preceded in death by one sister, Glorius
Johnson and three brothers, Elton Moore, Gilbert Moore and Hampton Moore.
Mrs. Parson graduated in 1951 from Douglass High School in Loudoun County, where
she earned valedictory honors and composed the school song. She was also a 2002
graduate of the Institute of Biblical Studies, Liberty University.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday, January 8, at Thacker Brothers Funeral
Home, Scottsville. Interment followed in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery,
Keene.
Lular was an avid soul-winner. Donations are being accepted by Liberty
University in her honor, care of The Alumni Office, 1971 University Boulevard,

grandchildren, Jane Goodman Kellam of Mappsville and Martha Ann Goodman of

Church in Amelia.

CHARLOTTE CH, Jan. 9 -Joseph Creighton
Riepe III, 52, of Charlotte Court House, died Wednesday, January 3, 2007,
following a courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 20 years. Sandy Johnson Riepe;
his son, Joseph Creighton Riepe IV (Creigh); his mother, Florence Daniel Riepe
Kalbacker; two sisters, Jacquelyn Riepe Hill and her husband, Hunter and Eleanor
Riepe Anders-Workman and her husband, Burr; his mother-in-law, Joyce Johnson;
his brother-in-law, Randy Johnson; nieces and nephews, Stephen Hill, Kathryn
Hill, Allison Anders, Creighton Anders, Aimee Johnson Hudson, Jessica Johnson
and great-nephew and niece, Chris and Sarah Johnson.
Mr. Riepe was a lifelong resident of Charlotte Court House, where
he managed the family farm for more than 20 years, following the death of his
father. In addition, he garnered recognition as an artist and decorative
waterfowl carver. His commitment to the youth in the community was exemplified
by his donation and construction of three baseball fields (Arcadia Fields) just
outside Charlotte Court House, and his unfailing devotion to the children he
coached. An avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Mr. Riepe's enthusiasm for the
game of baseball will be long remembered.
Mr. Riepe served on the Board of Directors of First Citizens Bank
in Drakes Branch and was a member of Village Presbyterian Church in Charlotte
Court House.
A memorial service was held 2 p.m. Saturday at Arcadia Lake near
Charlotte Court House.
