Prospect Native Dies
In Williamsburg

    JANUARY 4 - Kathleen "Kat" Glenn Carson, 84, formerly of Prospect, died in Williamsburg on Sunday, December 31, 2006.
    She was born in Prospect on June 18, 1922, the daughter of the late James Ernest and Lena Faris Glenn, where she lived most of her life before moving to Williamsburg two years ago. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Paul Sanford Long of Highland Springs and her second husband, Woodrow Ernest Carson whom died December 10,1996.
    She is survived by a daughter, Sandra L. Marcuson and husband, Kenneth of Newport News; a sister, Jane Marie Jones of South Boston; a brother, John Porter Glenn of Farmville; three grandchildren, Kent Marcuson and wife, Patti, Craig Marcuson and wife, Chris and Kaylan Sebert all of Williamsburg; seven great-grandchildren, Jake and Erin Sebert, Jordan, Dylan, Paul, Scott and David Marcuson all of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by a sister, Lazelette Glenn and two brothers. Henry and Ernest Glenn Jr.
    Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Prospect United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
    The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 4 to 5 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville.
    Remembrances may be made to Prospect United Methodist Church.

Jeanne Cordes
Mother of Local
Resident, Dies

     SANDSTON, Jan. 4 - Jeanne Carolyn White Cordes, of Sandston, died Tuesday, December 26,2006.
    She is survived by Norman Cordes, her loving and devoted husband of 66 years; three children; two daughters-in-law; a son-in-law; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild including her daughter, Carol "Cricket" Edmonson, son-in-law, Randy Edmonson and grandchildren, Caitlin and Benjamin Edmonson of Farmville.
    A native of Marietta, Ohio, Mrs. Cordes attended Marietta College. A career homemaker, she was a wonderful wife, mother, artist and golfer.
    Services are Saturday, January 6, at 2 p.m. at the Sandston Presbyterian Church.

    JANUARY 4 - Beverly Allen Apperson Koebel, 65, of Farmville, died Monday, January 1, 2007 at her home.
    She is survived by her husband, Joseph John Koebel; son, Charles Koebel and wife, Rebecca of Cumberland; daughter, Beverly Ann Leeper and husband, Jeffery of Seneca, SC; five grandchildren, Brandon Charles Koebel, Nicholas Alexander Leeper, Joseph Kirwin, James Kirwin and Melanie Kirwin and one great-grandchild. Amber Reed Kirwin. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carole Marie Kirwin.
    Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of the Virginia Veterans Cemetery with interment in the cemetery.

Dorothy F. Korrow, 88

Dies December 31

    DILLWYN, Jan. 4 - Dorothy Farr Korrow, of Dillwyn, passed peacefully at her home on Sunday, December 31, 2006. She was 88 years young and was a good gentle mother, grandmother and wife. She was the beloved wife of the late Russell F. Korrow Sr. She enjoyed a life of service for her church, family and community.
    She is survived by her children, Russell F. Korrow and wife, Brenda, Reed F. Korrow and wife, Karen, Patricia K. Petriskle and husband. Bill. William D. Korrow and wife, Jane, Juanita K. Lytle and husband, Joseph and Margaret Korrow; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
    A Funeral Mass was held 10:30 a.m. today (Thursday) at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Farmville. Interment will follow at 10 a.m. Friday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church cemetery, Charlotte Hall, MD.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Canoil.
    Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Hanes Chapel Church, Rockbridge County.
    The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

    NEW CANTON, January 4 - Robert (Bob) Ernest Hill, 75, of New Canton, died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, at the Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Edna Hill; four brothers. Mason, Roy, John and Henry Hill; four sisters, Roberta Hooe Hannah, Geneva Stinson, Mildred Christian, and Virginia (Corky) Bradshaw.
   He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Juanita Newton Hill; his family, Linda R. Gregg, of New Canton, Ginger H. Farrow and son-in-law, Crockett Farrow, of Manteo, NC, and daughter at heart, Peggy Gough, of Farmville; three grandchildren, Reggie Waddill, Lindsay Boyer, and Whitney Gregg; one step-grandchild, Andrew Farrow; sister, Nellie Harvey; and nieces and nephews.
    A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Welcome Wesleyan Methodist Church. The family will receive friends and family for food and fellowship after the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Welcome Wesleyan Methodist Church Building Fund.

    CUMBERLAND. January 4 - On Tuesday, January 2, 2007, Kenneth D. Allen Sr. went home to the Lord.
    He was born in Sevier County, TN, and later moved to Cumberland and Richmond. He worked for the state of Virginia doing HVAC.
    He is survived by his sister, Wilma Oertel, of Farmville; brother. Fern Allen, of Valdosta, GA; daughter, Jackie Robertson; son, Kenneth D. Allen Jr.; five grandchildren, Kenny, Jennifer, Kimberly, Joseph, and Ashley; four great-grandchildren, Kenny Jr., Nina, Gavin, and Joseph Jr.
    He will be buried next to his wife, Jean Allen, on Friday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m., at Jones Chapel Cemetery In Cumberland County.

Dies Tuesday

    ARVONIA, January 4 - Pauline Bryant Snoddy, of Arvonia, died Tuesday, January 2, 2007.
    Survivors include her sister, Corene Monday, of Scottsville; her brother, Robert Bryant, of Newport News; a stepson, Barry Snoddy, of Buckingham; and several nieces and nephews.
    She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Buckingham.
    A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, January 5, at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, Arvonia. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
    Mrs. Snoddy will lie in state 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday evening at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville, and at the church one hour prior to the service Friday.

   DILLWYN, Jan. 2 - Fannie Shumaker Taylor Robinson, 84, passed away peacefully in her home, in Dillwyn, with her family by her side on Monday, January 1, 2007.
   She was the daughter of Charlie and Emma Shumaker and the widow of the late Willie Walker Taylor and W. C. Robinson (Buck).
   She is survived by one sister, Gertrude Wills of Vinton; three children, JoAnn Agee and husband, Charles, Geraline Hooe and late husband, Robert (Rice) and Mel Taylor and wife, Shelby; four grandchildren, Karen Hebert, Kim Anthony, Garrett and Grandy Taylor; four great-grandchildren, Skye and Colton Hebert and Michael and Ray Anthony and a devoted care-giver, Lizzie Chambers.
    She was a special mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.
   A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn, followed by the burial at Dillwyn Town Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

   DILLWYN, Jan. 2 - George Edward Taylor, 83, of Dillwyn, died Saturday, December 30, 2006 in Charlottesville.
   He was born August 1, 1923 in Buckingham County, the son of the late John Taylor and Adaleen McFadden Taylor.
   He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Taylor; four daughters, Pamela Jo Amos and husband, Mickey of Oilville, Bonnie Sue Bryant and husband, Jim of Knoxville, TN, Carolyn Taylor and husband, Craig and Patsy Scruggs and husband, Floyd (Buck) all of Dillwyn; two grandchildren, Crystal Stone and husband, Raymond and Rebecca Tipton all of Dillwyn; a very special great-grandson, William Delano Stone; two step-grandchildren, David and Brandon Scruggs; a brother, Sam Jack Taylor of Dillwyn and two special nieces, Cathy Shanks and Janet (Mook) Jamerson.
   Funeral services were held today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in the Rocky Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery.

G. 0. Pettus Jr., 93
Of Keysville
Dies Saturday

   KEYSVILLE, Jan. 2 - George Overton Pettus Jr., 93, farmer, conservationist, investor and speculator, died Saturday, December 30, 2006. Known as "Oate", Mr. Pettus represented Walton District on the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors for 25 years. He was a member of the Keysville town council, and a member of the board of directors for the historic Staunton River Foundation. He served on the board of directors for the Virginia Association of Counties, Colonial Farm Credit, the Virginia Milk Commission, Virginia Dairyman's Association and the Piedmont Planning Commission.
    After working at Virginia Seed Services, now Southern States, and American Tobacco Company in Richmond, Mr. Pettus returned home in 1937 to operate Four Locust Farms and a mercantile business established by his father. He ran a hay brokerage service for local farmers and at one time owned a Chrysler dealership which sold, Case, Gehl and New Holland farm machinery.
    Until shortly before his death, Mr. Pettus remained active in civic endeavors. He was a strong supporter of projects that celebrated Southside Virginia's historic and natural resources, including recent efforts to save the Clarkton Bridge on the Staunton River and to renovate the Keysville and Fort Mitchell depots.
    Mr. Pettus, son of Bertha Hanmer Pettus and George Overton Pettus attended Randolph Macon Academy. Randolph Macon College and the College of William and Mary. He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
    Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Kathleen Shackleton Pettus; a daughter, Bernardine Pettus Tucker and son-in-law and friend, Robert Tucker of Keysville; two grandsons, Daniel J. Farnsworth and wife. Tammy of Greenville, SC and Zachary Tucker and wife, Dara of Keysville; three granddaughters, Kathleen Farnsworth Braun and husband, David of Swansea, MA, Ka-Le Pettus Congdon and Kandi Pettus Fisher and husband, Ryan of Richmond and seven great-grandchildren, Cullen, Jared and Campbell Farnsworth, Dalton Tucker, Blake Congdon, Wyatt and Walker Fisher. He was preceded in death by his son, George 0. Pettus III, a sister, Eloise Wynne Roberts and a brother, Reginald H. Pettus.
    Graveside services were held 11 a.m. Monday at Ash Camp Memorial Cemetery, Keysville.

Sujena Kerber, 56
Registered Nurse
Dies Monday

    DILLWYN, Jan. 2 - Sujena Kerber, 56, of Dillwyn, died peacefully at her home on Monday, January 1, 2007.
     She was born May 1, 1950 in Seoul, South Korea.
    Mrs. Kerber was a Registered Nurse and worked at St. Mary's Hospital and Johnston Willis Hospital in Richmond until her health prevented her from doing so.
    She is survived by her husband, William C. "Bill" Kerber;
her three children, Dorothea "Dodie" Kerber Hescock and her husband. Matt of Reston, Jennifer Kerber of Richmond and Michael "Scotty" Kerber of Shepherd AFB, Wichita Falls, Texas.
    A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Chapel of Puckett Funeral Home, Farmville.
    The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

George B. Kelsey, 95
Former Farmville
Resident, Dies

    APPOMATTOX, Jan. 2 - George Budd Kelsey, 95, of Appomattox and formerly of Farmville, passed from this earthly life to his heavenly home Saturday morning December 30, 2006 at his residence. He was the husband of Alice Harris Kelsey.
    He was born in Cumberland County on December 12, 1911, a son of the late Harrison Morton and Lillian Budd Kelsey.
    Mr. Kelsey was a member of Appomattox Courthouse Presbyterian Church, Farmville Masonic Lodge #41 A.F.&A.M.; past Master Farmville Lodge #41; past Patron of Appomattox Chapter #10 Order of Eastern Star and Primary Member Robert Morris Chapter #150 OES and Modern Woodmen of America and the V.F.W. He was also active in Scouting and in 1957 the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America awarded him the Silver Beaver Award. He joined the US Army Infantry in 1932, serving in Hawaii and was drafted in World War II into the Army serving in the Pacific Theater from New Guinea to Japan. He retired from Kilkare Laundry in Farmville.
    In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stanley Kelsey of Richmond; a special daughter, Cheryl and her husband, C. Lewis McDearmon Jr. of Appomattox and their children, Mac, Ruth, Patrick and Cecilia; a number of great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Goin and Janet Vaughan both of Farmville; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Carolyn Vaughan; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Crawford and Dorothy Harris of Appomattox, Ray and Kathy Harris of Gladstone and special caregivers, Ray and Kathy Harris, Doc and Dorothy Harris and Kirk and Linda Harris. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Kelsey Montgomery.
    Funeral services were held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Appomattox Courthouse Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Cameron Smith, the Rev. Lanny Howe and the Rev. Shannon Harris. Burial followed in Westview Cemetery in Farmville.

Anne T. Varner, 80
Caregiver and
Volunteer, Dies

    JANUARY 2 - Anne Tapscott Varner, 80, of Farmville, ascended into heaven on Sunday, December 31, 2006.
   Born and raised in Hatton, she was the daughter of George Norvell Tapscott and Annie Baber Tapscott.
    An avid caregiver and volunteer, she will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, incandescent smile, faith in God and, most recently, her courage through months of great adversity.
    She will be deeply missed by her husband of 54 years, John H. Varner; her three children, Janet Conboy and her husband, Rick of Matthews, NC, John Varner Jr. of Farmville and Patricia Varner and her husband, Rusty Breeden of Glen Allen; her two brothers, George Tapscott and his wife. Kitty of Richmond and Harold Tapscott and his wife, Mary Lou of Okeechobee, FL. She also enjoyed the affection of many devoted cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and her church family.
   The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Farmville United Methodist Church followed by a graveside service at Antioch United Methodist Church of Cumberland.
