MEHERRIN, Dec. 28 - Virginia L.
Shanaberger Hutchens, 75, of Meherrin, died Tuesday, December 26, 2006 at her
home.
She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl L. Witt of Farmville and
Lisa A. Mason of Meherrin; a son, David M. Mason and wife, Pam of Appomattox;
ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and four brothers. Bob Shanaberger
and Frank Shanaberger both of Farmville, Jim Shanaberger and Sam Shanaberger
both of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert "Bob" Hutchens;
two sons, Charles E. McMillian and Richard "Ricky" Mason and one brother, Paul
Shanaberger.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday in the Chapel of
Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to
8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dies December 21
At Age 103
DECEMBER 28 - Mary Payne Davis, 103, died
Thursday, December 21, 2006 at her home in Arlington.
She was born October 30, 1903 at Darlington Heights, the first
child of Molly and Jim Payne. She was married to the late Benson W. Davis.
She attended Madisonville High School, Farmville State Teachers
College (Longwood), Harrisonburg State Teachers College (James Madison) and
Appalachian University.
Mrs. Davis was a longtime resident of DeLand, Florida, where she
was a teacher and guidance counselor in DeLand Junior High School. She was
active in St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Alpha Xi Delta Alumnae, Stetson
University and in the community. In more recent years, she lived at Darlington
Heights and Arlington.
She is survived by a sister, Margaret Payne Greene and nieces and
nephews. Henry Gibson (Karen), Molly Ann Gibson, Thomas Radkevich (Marie), James
Payne (Linda) and Susan Payne Bankston (Richard).
Interment was at Spring Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Darlington
Heights.

Cashion, 78, of Farmville, died Friday, December 22,2006.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Asal and husband, Johnny
Sr. of Farmville and Patricia Barnak and Greg of Cumberland; three sons, Michiel
Willis and Shirley of Farmville, Gary Willis and Trudy of Chester and David
Holbrook and Carol of Richmond; ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Maxey, 82, of Scottsvllle, Buckingham County, died Thursday, December 21, 2006
at her home.
She was born September 19, 1924 in Churchville, the daughter of the
late Dyche Shiflet and Edna Skelton Shiflet. She was the widow of Herbert E.
Maxey Sr.
Mrs. Maxey was a member of Sharon Baptist Church and a graduate of
Longwood College.
She is survived by a son, Herbert E. Maxey Jr. of Buckingham; a
daughter, Linda M. Howard of Charlottesville; two sisters. Charlotte S. Young
and Lola S. Kirkland; three brothers, Lenwood Shiflet, Riley Shiflet and Claude
Shiflet and ten grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Lany Maxey.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at Sharon Baptist Church
(Buckingham County), with interment in the church cemetery.

PAMPLIN, Dec. 26 - Robert Dell Thompson, 44, of
Pamplin, died Wednesday, December 20, 2006 in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Lynchburg, November 23, 1962, he is the son of Buddy Ray
Thompson Sr. and Charlene Ranson Thompson of Little River, SC.
Mr. Thompson was a member of Rocks Baptist Church, owner of
Robbie's Towing of Farmville and a driver for UPS. Robbie was owner and driver
of RDT Racing, running his racecar in NASCAR races at South Boston, Orange
County and Franklin County Speedways.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife. Lisa E.
Thompson; a stepdaughter, Maggie Elllngton of Pamplin; a brother, Buddy Ray
Thompson Jr. and his wife, Cindy; a sister, Cheryl T. Sibilia and her husband,
John; two nephews, Buddy Ray Thompson III and Cory Alexander Thompson all of
Little River, SC; mother-in-law, Margaret Agee of Farmville; father-in-law,
Landen J. Edwards Sr.; brother-in-law, Landen J. Edwards Jr. both of White Pine,
TN and a sister-in-law, Katherine Nichols of Farmville.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Saturday at Rocks Baptist Church
by the Rev. Chris Harbin. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

APPOMATTOX, Dec. 26 - Bessie Dowdy Pulliam, 98, of
Farmville and formerly of Appomattox, died Sunday, December 24, 2006. She was
the widow of Herbert Carrington Pulliam Sr.
She was born in Farmville on February 9, 1908, a daughter of the
late Charles Hamilton and Annie Singleton Dowdy.
Mrs. Pulliam was a graduate of the Farmville Public Schools and
attended Roanoke Business College. Bess was a member of Memorial United
Methodist Church, the Appomattox Woman's Club and the Appomattox Garden Club.
She is survived by her son, Herbert C. Pulliam Jr. of Wilton
Manors, FL; three grandchildren, Elizabeth P. Sandier, Samuel Carrington Pulliam
and Joanna P. Read; four great-grandchildren, Collin, Jack, Chase and Kate
Sandier and Maxwell Read and two sisters, Inez D. Simpson and Elsie D. Fulcher
both of Farmville.

December 27, in Liberty Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughters, Joyce P. Blake and husband, Jim,
Caroline P. Law-son and husband, Joe and Thelma P. Davis all of Dillwyn; six
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a
grandson, James Allen.

Harmon, of Burkeville, died Sunday, December 17, 2006 at Manor Care Stratford
Hall, Henrico.
She was born in Dinwiddie County on March 15, 1936 to the late Thea
W. Bland and Mary Alease Pride Bland.
Mrs. Harmon graduated from Dinwiddie Training School in 1953 and
from Piedmont Nursing School. She retired from Piedmont Sanctuary as a
supervisor of nursing. She also taught nursing at Amelia Nottoway Vocational
School. She resided in Burkeville for 51 years.
She Joined Rocky Branch Baptist Church, Sutherland, at an early age
and later moved her membership to Nottoway Baptist Church, Crewe. Mrs. Harmon
was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Evergreen Benjamin Chapter #64 In
Crewe since 1958 and the Golden Circle Order of the Eastern Star.
She was married to Rudolph Harmon for 48 years, whom preceded her
in death. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings,
Alma Bland Johnson Bonner, Thea H. Bland, Morris F. Bland Sr., Bruce L. Bland
Sr., David M. Bland Sr., George A. Bland Sr., Marion Bland Freeman and Melzetta
Bland Wilson.
She leaves to mourn, her sister, LeMoyne Bland Ward of Petersburg;
a loving and devoted granddaughter, Felicia Harmon Hubbard and a devoted
grand-son-in-law, Richard Hubbard; adopted son, Rudolph Harmon Jr. of
Burkeville; reared two other son, Vernon Lee Harmon Sr. of Crewe and David M.
Bland Jr. of Petersburg; one granddaughter; one grandson; four
great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Catherine Harmon; foster brother, Donald
Lee Ray of Dinwiddie; sister-in-law, Louise Williams Bland of Petersburg; two
brothers-in-law, William Freeman and Herman L. Ward of Petersburg; uncle,
Benjamin Bland of New Jersey; several nieces and nephews, one very devoted,
Doris Bland Murdock; numerous cousins; many caring former students, one very
devoted, Renea Jackson of Nottoway; many longtime friends in the Burkeville
Community, three devoted, Harvey Lee Branch, Loveless Moore and Alfred
Bridgeforth.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 12 noon at First Nottoway
Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Easter, officiating. Interment will be in
the church cemetery. The remains will lie in state on Saturday from 10 a.m.
until hour of services.

Former State Trooper
Dies Thursday
APPOMATTOX, Dec. 12 - Shirley Richard
Simpson, 65, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2006, at his daughter's home.
Born in Prince Edward County, July 16, 1941, he was a son of the
late Charlie A. (Dick) Simpson and Visa Lou Lowe Simpson of Prospect.
He is survived by his former wife, Wanda W. Simpson; a son and
daughter-in-law, Donald and Myra Simpson; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl
Simpson-Freeman, DVM, and William N. Freeman III; two grandsons, Chase arid
Nathan Simpson; four sisters, Mildred Lou Bales of Hampton, Peggy Kelsey and
husband. Ray of Prospect, Polly Duncan and husband, William of Columbia and Lena
Huddleston and husband. Tommy of Farmville.
Mr. Simpson was a former Virginia State Trooper and later a
corrections officer for the Virginia Department of Corrections. His first
assignment as a trooper was in Wise County, and later transferred to Appomattox.
He served in the U. S. Army as a Morse Code operator and was a member of the
Army National Guard, 116th Engineer Battalion, 29th Division.
He attended Hargrave Military Academy, studied agriculture at N.C.
State University and received a degree in criminal Justice from Central Virginia
Community College. Aside from his formal education, he was an avid student of
history, and a charter member of the Appomattox County Historical Society and
the High Bridge Chapter of The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Farmville.
In later years, Richard's greatest joys were spending time with his
grandsons, and helping care for the horses, cats, dogs and other animals on his
daughter's small farm. He spent many hours bushhogging and gardening, and loved
to share his produce with friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday at Appomattox P.E.
Presbyterian Church, Prospect. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Scottsville; a loving sister, Margie Roberts of Richmond and a brother, Bernard

near Staunton.
She was born Annie Belle Chapman on March 24, 1916 to William
McKinley Chapman and Daisy Franklin Chapman. She was preceded in death by her
husbands, Marvin Hamilton McFarland and Roland C. Harkleroad and three brothers,
Willie Chapman, John James Chapman and Paul Chapman.
She is survived by her daughter, Miriam (Mimi) Moring and husband,
Richard; two grandsons, Timothy Callahan and family of Christiansburg and James
(Chip) Penney and wife, Jaime of Lynchburg; five stepchildren; nine
step-grand-children and their families including Laurie Kennon and husband,
Aubrey of Prospect, Charlie Harkleroad and wife, Studie Tuggle of Rockford, IL,
and James (Hoss) Harkleroad and wife, Kathy of Somerset, PA; many nieces,
nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Mrs. Harkleroad made many friends during her active lifetime in the
Farmville community. She was a member of Farmville Baptist Church, Farmville
Rebekahs Lodge 87 where she served as past Noble Grand, the Farmville AARP and
the Jollie Dollies Club.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Farmville
Baptist Church with burial to follow in Westvlew Cemetery.

Dies December 4
SOUTH
BOSTON, Dec. 7 -The Rev. Donald Ray Davidson, 70, of South Boston, died Monday,
December 4, 2006.
He was born November 6, 1936 in Columbus, Ohio, a son of the
late Percy L. Davidson and Olive Thorpe Davidson.
The Rev. Davidson was a member of Shady Grove United
Methodist Church, a retired Pastor who served several United Methodist Churches
on the Lynchburg and Farmville districts for 34 years, and he pastored at Union
Christian Church in Virgilina until his recent illness. He was also a member of
Hyco Ruritan Club. where he served as Chaplain. He formerly served as chaplain
for the South Boston Police Department and the Culpeper Police Department. He
was a volunteer counselor for the Mental Health Association of Halifax County,
where he founded a program of pastoral care for pastors within Halifax County in
conjunction with this association. He was a member of the Halifax County Social
Services Board for 11 years, serving as Chairman from 1997 until 2003. He was a
member of the Halifax County Ministerial Association and was involved in prison
ministries.
He is survived by his wife, The Rev. Ruth Ann Davidson; a
son, Christopher Ray Davidson of Danville; a daughter, Melanie Ann Watts and
husband. Dusty of Lake Wales, FL; a sister, Carolyn Jones and husband, Ross of
Sunbury, OH; a brother, Dennis Davidson of Powell, OH and four grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by a son, Donald Mark Davidson.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Shady Grove
United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Tongue, D. S. and the Rev. Raymond
McGarr officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) at
Brooks Funeral Home, South Boston, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at the
home.
