   CHARLOTTE CH, August 22 -Jean Faye Baldwin Evans, 60, of Charlotte Court House, died Sunday, August 20,2006.
   She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.
   Surviving are her husband, Reverend George Lewis Evans; three daughters, Annette Hammersten, Michele Mayberry and Georgette Joyner; one son, George L. Evans II and seven grandchildren.
   Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Drakes Branch, with interment in the church cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Browning Funeral Home, Keysville.

John Stephen Byrum, 71
Retired Engineer
Dies Thursday

   DILLWYN, August 22 - John Stephen Byrum II, 71, of Dillwyn, died Thursday, August 17, 2006 at the UVA Medical Center, Charlottesville, from a fall.
   He was born in South Norfolk, a son of the late Joseph Issac and Maude Elizabeth Speller Byrum.
   Mr. Byrum was retired from Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Mfg. as a pilot support engineer. He was an United States Air Force veteran.
   He is survived by his wife, Sharon Lee Byrum; a son, John Stephen Byrum III and wife, Gina of Fayetteville, Georgia; two daughters, Katherine Elizabeth Krause and husband, Donald of Tracy, California and Linda Shepherd West and husband, Brad of Norcross, Georgia; a brother, Thomas Ridley Byrum and wife. Shelia of Chesapeake and seven grandchildren, Sarah, Amanda and Mark Shepherd, Katie and Jack Byrum and Tyler and Dylan West.
   Graveside services were held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the Byrum Family Cemetery at Curdsville.
   Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville, was in charge of arrangements.

Funeral Service For
Wilson Barton, 88
Set 10 A.M. Thursday

   DILLWYN, August 22 - Wilson Barton, 88, died Friday, August 18, at his home in Dillwyn. He had suffered from congestive heart failure.
   Mr. Barton, a twin, was born in Greely, CO, on March 20, 1918, three minutes after his brother Woodrow. Woodrow died Monday, August 14, four days before Wilson. The boys, youngest of eight children, grew up in Oklahoma. During the Great Depression, Wilson moved to California to find work.
   Returning to Oklahoma, Mr. Barton married Maisie Florence Greer in 1937. The couple moved from Oklahoma to Tennessee in 1947, then to Virginia, where they bought a Buckingham County farm in 1949. In 1955, they moved to Pennsylvania. Mr. Barton worked for the Philadelphia Electric Power Company until his retirement in 1985. They then returned to the farm in Buckingham County.
   Mr. Barton was preceded in death by his wife and one son, Mark. He is survived by three sons, Wilson Greer Barton of Hawaii, and Gary G. Barton and James E. Barton Sr., of Farmville; seven grandchildren, Hal De-Mar, Shana Barton, Kimberly Barton. Beth Barton Howard, Jacqueline Barton, James Barton Jr., and Christiana Barton, and five great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, at Shorter Funeral Home in Farmville, Pastor Rick Caldwell of Concord Baptist Church officiating.

Dies in Pennsylvania

   PENNSYLVANIA, August 17 -John H. Gills, 82, of Shillington, Pennsylvania, died Wednesday, August 16, 2006 at his residence.
   He was born in Rice, a son of the late Stanley and Estelle Parley Gills. He was married to the late Helen E. Wesner Gills.
   Mr. Gills was forklift operator for Coca-Cola of Reading for 28 years and a World War II Army veteran. He was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
   He is survived by three sons, Robert M. Gills and wife, Tina of Seymour, Indiana, Joseph Lany Gills of Cincinnati, Ohio and James D. Gills of Shillington, Pennsylvania; brother, Joseph Gills of Rice; two sisters. Alma Gills King of Rice and Dean Gills Dugger of Amelia; six grandchildren, Kim Simons Updegraff, Lisa Simons Wahba, Ryan Gills, Kelli Gills Reese and John and Jeff Gills and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances M. Gills.
   Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Bean Funeral Home, Shillington, with interment in Memory Gardens, East Cocalio Twp., Lancaster County, PA.

Dies Wednesday

   RICE, August 17 - Richard "Dick" Farley, 83, of Rice, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 2006.
   Born October 15, 1922, he was the son of the late James Claudius and Willie Walthall Farley.
   Mr. Farley was a retired farmer and a member of Jamestown Presbyterian Church.
   He is survived by his beloved wife, Mildred Schmidt Farley; son. Jimmy Farley and his wife, Michelle; daughters, Julia Cooper and her husband, Neal and Janet Lawson and her husband, Jimmy and three grandchildren, Jamie Farley, Ashley Cooper and Kristen Melton.
   Funeral services will be held 11a.m. Saturday at the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Dies August 11

   AUGUST 17 - Norvel Oakley "Oak" Dasher, 87, of Farmville, died Friday, August 11. 2006 at Southside Community Hospital.
   He was born December 8, 1918 in Maryland, the son of the late William Eston and Lula Grace Dasher.
   Mr. Dasher was an airplane mechanic for Capital and United Airlines. He enjoyed working on airplanes his whole life. He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
   He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn V. Dasher;
daughter, Barbara Mello of California: four grandchildren, Jennifer Kufis, Joseph Mello, Juliana Laconte, Evelyn Duker;
11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Dasher of Farmville; a sister, Arvella Worthwan and five brothers, Wayne, Noel, William, Donald and Herbert Dasher.
   Funeral services were held 3 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

   PROSPECT, August 15 - Billy Braxton Robinette, 59, of Prospect, died Sunday, August 13, 2006.
   He was born October 29, 1946 in Chase City.
   Mr. Robinette was an employee of the Town of Farmville.
   He is survived by his wife, Florence S. Robinette; a son, Ricky Robinette of North Carolina; a daughter. Albert C. Finchum, 78

Dies Sunday

   AUGUST 15 - Albert Charles Finchum, 78, of Palmyra, formerly of Farmville, died Sunday, August 13, 2006 in St. Mary's Hospital.
   Born in Sevier County, Tennessee on September 16, 1927, he was a son of the late Austin and Cordelia Shultz Finchum. He was the husband of the late Mamie Berry Finchum.
   For 39 years Mr. Finchum worked for the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #147. He was a member of Concord Baptist Church, the Mineral Masonic Lodge A.F.&A.M. and was an US Army veteran of World War II.
   He is survived by two sons, Charles Albert Finchum and wife, Pam and Ronnie Lee Finchum; a daughter, Brenda Sue Finchum all of the Lake Monticello community of Palmyra; son-of-heart. Chief Richard Carl Ford and daughter-of-heart, Debbie Ford of Pikesville, NC; sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Gladys Rothgeb of Gordonsville; a brother, Raymond Finchum of Martinsville; three grandchildren, Charles Finchum Jr. of Henrico, Crystal Deskins of Roanoke and Kimberly Finchum of Barstow, CA; six great-grandchildren, Madelin, Alana Grace, Trey, Mackenzie, Kimberlyn and Kaden and his beloved companion, Itzy. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Lou Finchum; a brother, Clifford Finchum and a grandson, Gary Finchum.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Robinson Funeral Home, Appomattox, by the Rev. Philip Hunt and the Rev. Frank Baldwin. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery, Farmville.

Vernon C. Allen, 85
Cumberland County
Native, Dies Sunday

   ROANOKE, August 10 - Vernon Claude Allen Sr., 85, of Roanoke County, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2006 at Lewis-Gale Medical Center.
   Born on September 30, 1920 in Cumberland County, he was the son of the late Robert Claude and Ethel Baltimore Allen.
   He was a faithful member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class for almost 60 years.
   Mr. Allen was an U.S. World War II veteran serving in the 8th Army Air Corps. He retired from Roanoke Gas Company in 1986 after 46 years of service. Throughout his life he was an active member of many business, historical, military and service organizations including The American Legion, Sons of the Confederacy, Fincastle Resolutions Chapter of SAR, 8th Air Force Fellowship Group, Big Lick Kiwanis Club and Kiwanis of Roanoke. After retirement he enjoyed playing bridge and researching family genealogy. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, cherished for his warm, outgoing and optimistic personality.
   Preceding him in death was his beloved wife of 53 years, Sara Lee Nance Allen, and a sister, Dorothy Allen Pamepinto.
   Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Vernon C. Allen Jr. and Rebecca M. Allen; grandsons, Daniel Christopher Allen and Jonathan Mackenzie Allen; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley A. and Frank E. Thomas Sr.; grandchildren, Debra T. Hux and husband, Jeff, Frank E. Thomas Jr. and wife, Bronwyn; great-granddaughters, Logan Hux, Jenna Hux and Emmalyn Thomas; brothers-in-law, Oscar Littleton Nance Jr., Robert Edward Nance and wife, Billie Jean; sister-in-law, Mildred Nance Bryson and several nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were held 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. Interment followed in Evergreen Burial Park.

"Bittie" Allen, 92

Dies Tuesday

   DILLWYN, August 10 - Mary LeSueur "Bittie" Allen, 92, of Dillwyn, died at her home on Tuesday, August 8, 2006.
   Born April 9, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Willie Daniel and Mattie Dunkum LeSueur.
   She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank Acie Allen, sisters. Pearl Flippen, Annie Mitchell, Mattie Harris, Ruby Raikes and Carrie Flippen, brother, John LeSueur and two infant brothers.
   She is survived by a son, Acie Allen Jr. and his wife, Robyn; grandsons, Matthew and Carter and 22 nieces and nephews. She enjoyed her role as surrogate mother and grandmother, Especially held dear to her were, Ernestine and John Gormus, Faye Banton and Tiffany Gormus whom she considered her first grandchild.
   Although she suffered numerous hardships after the death of her husband in 1962, Mrs. Allen was a strong individual who taught others that through hard work and a strong faith, everything is possible.
   She was a life long member of Cedar Baptist Church where funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. interment will follow in the church cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn.

   MEHERRIN, August 8 - Richard Lee "Dick" Clark, 69, died Sunday, August 6, 2006 at his home in Meherrin with his family by his side.
   Mr. Clark was a very devoted father, grandfather, brother and friend to many. He was well respected and well known in the engineering field and a pillar in the engineering society.
   He was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Betty, an infant daughter, Stacey Lynn and his parents, Hester and Lillian dark.
   He is survived by two sons, Larney and his wife, Louise and Lee and his wife. Angie; a daughter, Lori and her husband, Jack Cawthorn and Jack's daughter, Trista; four grandsons. Josh, Miles, Hunter and Hayden. He also leaves behind two brothers and two sisters, Roy and his wife, Barbara, Dwight, Jean and her husband, Dave Partin, Susan and her husband, Cliff Coryell and their families; a special uncle, Dudley Clark; devoted niece, Tammi Shelton; and nephew. Rick Hayden and their families.
   Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Browning Funeral Home, Keysville. Interment will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Signal Hill Memorial Park, Hanover. There will be a Masonic Ceremony at the conclusion of the graveside services.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Tuesday) at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

   GEORGIA, August 8 - Lucille Jones Smead, 96, of St. Simons Island, Georgia, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006.
   Funeral services were held Monday, August 7, at St. Simons Presbyterian Church. Interment will be held 11 a.m. August 16 in the Arvonia Memorial Cemetery in Arvonia, under the direction of Dunkum Funeral Home.
   She is survived by three nieces, Elizabeth LeSueur and Michele Jones both of Richmond and Janice Morgan Jones of Worcester, Massachusetts; two nephews, Michael Jones of Emporia and Henry Spooner and his wife, Virginia of Fowlstown, Georgia.
   Mrs. Smead attended James Madison University and received a Bachelors degree from Longwood University in Farmville. She earned a Masters degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Virginia. Employed for 25 years in the public school system of Portsmouth, she was a classroom teacher, principal and supervisor of Speech & Hearing. While there, she served as president of the Portsmouth Education Association, Portsmouth Music Club, Retired Teachers Association and ADR Society. She was also a Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star Chapter. She held office in the local, state and National Education Association, Children's Theatre and Norfolk City Ballet.
   When Mrs. Smead moved from Portsmouth to Richmond, she accepted the position as Virginia State Supervisors of Speech Pathology with the State Department of Education. She served on the National Committee of Performing Arts, as well as on the President's National Committee on Aging, and was elected a FELLOW in the American Speech and Hearing Association. In the year 2000 she was awarded Honorary Life Membership by the Presbyterian Women of the Presbyterian Church (USA). She was an elder in the St. Simons Presbyterian Church.
   In 1980 she married the Llewellyn Smead and moved to St. Simons Island where she held memberships in the St. Simons Historical Society, Casino Garden Club, Mozart Society, Woman's Club, Golden Isle Arts and Humanities and the St. Simons Presbyterian Church. For many years, she served on the Boards of Directors for CASA, as well as on the Board of Directors for The Golden Rule.
   Mrs. Smead was listed in the following publications: Personality of the South, Who's Who in the World of Women, and the International Platform Society.

Native, Dies Saturday

   AUGUST 8 - Marjorie Baber Tapscott, 90, died Saturday, August 5, 2006 at Holly Manor Nursing Home, Farmville.
   She was born July 16, 1916 in Buckingham County, the third of four daughters of the late George Agee Baber and Julia Tapscott Baber. She was the widow of Vincent Alien Tapscott.
   She is survived by a son, Vincent Allen Tapscott Jr. and his wife, Anita of Mineral and Olney, Maryland; a daughter, Sandra Ridgely and her husband, Lee of Farmville; three grandchildren; two great-grandsons; eight nieces and nephews and many cousins.
   Mrs. Tapscott was a life long member of Sharon Baptist Church in Buckingham, where a funeral service was held at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday). Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Charles "Buck" Rice, 81

Dies Monday

   AUGUST 3 - Charles William "Buck" Rice, 81, of Farmville, died Monday, July 31, 2006 in Farmville.
   He was born October 23, 1924 in Prince Edward County. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute before serving his country in World War II in the United States Army. During his tour, he earned a purple heart for his courage and bravery.
   Mr. Rice was a long time member of Farmville Baptist Church, a life deacon as well as a Sunday school teacher since 1982. He was a member of the Lions Club. He epitomized humility, gentleness, kindness and his great strength and love were endless. He was a beloved husband and a devoted father and grandfather.
   He is survived by his wife, Edna Rice; two sons, Gordon Davis and his wife, Jane of West Palm Beach, Florida and Rick Davis and his wife. Candy of Richmond; two granddaughters, Kim Davis of West Palm Beach, Florida and Lori Davis of Richmond.
   A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Farmville Baptist Church with interment in Douglas Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Puckett Funeral Home in Farmville.

   AUGUST 3 - James Marvin Helms Jr., 78, of Farmville, died Tuesday, August 1,2006.
   He was born September 4, 1927 in Rock Hill, South Carolina, a son of the late James Marvin Helms Sr. and Almetta Louise Moss.
   Mr. Helms was retired from Longwood University after 38 years as a professor of history.
   He is survived by his wife, Jo G. Helms; a son, James Marvin Helms, III and wife. Grace Overton Helms of Midlothian; a daughter. Kelly Elizabeth Jones and husband, Gary Michael of Midlothian; a sister, Louise Helms Deas of Leslie, South Carolina; two grandchildren, James M. Mrs. Martin, 88
Of Cartersville
Dies Tuesday

   CARTERSVILLE, Aug. 3 - Mrs. Dorothy Virginia Fleming Martin, 88, died Tuesday, August 1, 2006. Mrs. Martin was born April 26, 1918, in Iowa. Her husband was the late Jack P. Martin.
   She is survived by a daughter, Joyce M. Day of Connecticut; two sons, William Jack Martin and Gary F. Martin, both of Cartersville; three grandsons, Ralph Day, Richard Day, and Robert Martin.
   Mrs. Martin lived a full life, wife, mother, student, nurse and teacher.
   Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. from the Thomas Chapel United Methodist Church on Highway 45, Cartersville, with interment in the church cemetery.
   The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6-7:30 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville.
   Remembrances may be made in her memory to the Parkinson Research, c/o UVA, Charlottesville, VA, or the American Heart Association.

Clyde B. Moss, 72
Of Dillwyn
Dies Tuesday

   DILLWYN, August 3 - Clyde Browning Moss, 72, of Dillwyn, died Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at his home.
   He was born September 4, 1933 in Buckingham County, the son of the late Charles D. Moss and Evie Sharp Moss.
   He is survived by two daughters. Lisa M. Jones and husband, Troy of New Canton and Catherine M. Word and husband. Kirk of Farmville; a son, Charles D. (Danny) Moss and wife, Sue of Dillwyn; a brother, Shirley 0. Moss and wife, Bonnie of Richmond; grandchildren, Brett and Hunter Jones, Blake Word, Casey Neher and husband, Scott, Tabitha Boley and husband, Patrick, and Joseph Frable; six great-granddaughters, a nephew, a great-nephew; sister-in-law, Esta C. Moss of Richmond, brother-in-law, Hershel Cassidy of Corbin, Kentucky and special friends, Dorothy H. Henry of Richmond and Callie Jones of Dillwyn. He was preceded in death by a sister, Molly Cassidy and a brother, Charles D. Moss Jr.
   Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in the Dillwyn Town Cemetery.
   The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
   Memorial contributions may be made to Buckingham County Rescue Squad or First Baptist Church "Helping Hands Ministry".
