Robert I. King
NEW CANTON, Jan. 8 - Robert I. King,
of New Canton, died Wednesday, January 7, 2004.
Mr. King served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and
worked with VEPCO for 42 years.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; a son, Wayne and his wife,
Mary and two grandchildren, Tammi and her husband, Vern and Michael and his
wife, Martha.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Welcome Wesleyan
Church, Hwy 15, five miles south of the James River Bridge.

Of Virginia Beach
Dies Monday
VIRGINIA BEACH, Jan. 8 -Ann Kingdon Shields died Monday, January 5,
2004 at her home.
She was born September 15, 1926 In Bluefield, WV, a daughter of the
late Alva Rite and Arthur F. Kingdon.
She is survived by her husband, Walter Dunnington Shields of
Virginia Beach; her daughter, Ann Stone of Brevard, NC; her brother, Frederick
Kingdon of Mullens, WV; her sister, Helen Mays of Bluefield, WV and her
grandchildren, Maurine, Elizabeth and John Shields, Alan and Lucie Stone. She
was preceded In death by her brothers, Harold and Arthur Ritz Kingdon and her
sister, Kathryn Frampton.
Mrs. Shields attended State Teacher's College (Longwood) and had
been associated with various Women's Clubs, Garden Clubs, Junior League, and
hospital volunteer activities in Bluefield and Huntington, WV and Farmville and
Virginia Beach. For many years she sang in the choir and assisted with altar
duty at Galilee Episcopal Church.
A church service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Galilee
Episcopal Church by the Rev. Dr. Coleman Tyler.
The family requests that memorials be made to The Duvall Home
for Retarded Children, PO Box 220036, Glenwood, FL 32722.
H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Virginia Beach, are
handling the arrangements.

Dies January 6
FOREST, Jan. 8 - Robert Estes Spencer, Jr., 51, of Forest, died
Tuesday, January 6, 2004.
Born In Lynchburg, June 20, 1952, he was a son of Lucy Ore Spencer
Bailey of Farmville and the late Robert Estes Spencer, Sr. He was a 1970
graduate of Brookville High School and James Madison University In 1974.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 26 years,
Vicki Deal Spencer; a son, Robert Travis Spencer and his girlfriend, Tara
Maiewski of Forest; his maternal grandmother, Mamie Bowling Spencer of
Lynchburg: paternal mother and father-in-law, Raymond and Mary Lee Deal of
Madison Heights; stepfather, William R. Bailey, Jr. of Farmville; two
stepbrothers, William R. Bailey, III and his wife, Melissa of Farmville and
Dwayne Alien Bailey and his wife. Dawn of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
A funeral service was held 11 a.m. today (Thursday) in the Chapel
of Heritage Funeral Service, by Dr. Tim N. Madison and the Rev. Steve Tyree.
Burial followed in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

PROSPECT, Jan. 6 - Sid Francis Kerns, 70, of Prospect, died Sunday,
January 4, 2004 at his home.
Mr. Kerns retired and moved to Prospect in 1976, He was an avid
outdoorsman, a master angler and played baseball for the Rockingham County
League and was a veteran of the Korean War,
He is survived by three children, William Lee Kerns, Steven Ray
Kerns and Karen Steward; a sister, Audrey K. McKeel; three brothers, Wilmer
Kerns, Jack Kerns and Dennis Kerns and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Clover Hill
United Methodist Church Cemetery, Dayton.

JANUARY 6 - Alice Forbes Dorrier, 95, of Brookview Lodge, Farmville
and Scottsville, died Saturday, January 3, 2004.
The widow of John W. Dorrier, she was the daughter of the late
James H. Forbes and Julia Gilliam Forbes.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. J. Branch Forbes of
Andersonville; her nieces, Sandra F. Moss of Dillwyn, Susan F. Bomar of
Andersonville and Nan F. Bradley of Midlothian; her great-nephew, Billy Moss and
great-nieces, Melanie Farrish, Robin Alien and Amy Lawhorne all of Dillwyn.
Members of her extended family were Bea and Phil Keaton of Lake Montlcello. Bea
was her companion and friend for many years.
Mrs. Dorrier received her formal education at the School for the
Deaf at Staunton. She was active in the deaf community and was a member of the
Blue Ridge Senior Deaf Group. In later years, she came to regard Brookview as
her home and enjoyed her excursions with Mrs. Keaton. During 2003 she received
additional care from two very special people, Leigh Ann Brown and Peggy Borum.
A funeral service was held at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, at 1
p.m. Monday with interment in New Store Presbyterian Church In Buckingham
County.

Lyles of Mechanicsville and Gene and Elizabeth Lyles of Keysvllle; two daughters
and a son-in-law, Rosa and Edward Gittman of Farmville and Judy Ann Lyles of
South Hill; six grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren.

Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at her home. She was the widow of Gray M. Norman,
Sr.
She is survived by her parents, Craig and Mary Ashman of Amelia;
her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Mark Dunkum of Dillwyn; her two sons and
daughters-in-law, Melvin and Jennifer Norman of Cartersville and Kemp and Vicki
Norman of Cumberland; her brother, Eddie Ashman of Amelia; her sister, Gall A.
Harris of Buena Vista and eight grandchildren, Meghan and Gray Norman, Erin and
Woody Dunkum, Loren Jane Norman, Heather, Samantha and Nicholas Reed.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Friday at Grove Methodist Church,
Cumberland, with interment in the church cemetery.

William L. McMillan, 74
COLONIAL HEIGHTS, Jan. 6 - William L. McMillan, Sr., 74, of
Colonial Heights, died Thursday, January 1, 2004 in South-side Regional Medical
Center, Petersburg.
He was born in Coalwood, West Virginia, a son of the late Monroe J. and
Ola Booker McMillan
Mr. McMillan served 20 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as a
Sergeant First Class, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2239, a member of DAV
and a member of Swift Creek Baptist Church. He was a retired engineer for Civil
Service after 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, Pallie B. McMillan; two sons, William
L. McMillan, Jr. of Colonial Heights and Kent M. McMillan and his wife, Claudia
of Farmville; two granddaughters, Sarah N. McMillan and Laura K. McMillan; one
brother, Joseph B. McMillan and his wife, Mae of Concord; one sister, Margaret
A. Seay of Buckingham County and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday at Swift Creek Baptist
Church with the Rev. Steve Felker officiating. Burial followed in Dale Memorial
Park, Chesterfield.
