DILLWYN, May 30 - Raymond Henry Bruce, 64,
of Dillwyn, died Thursday, May 25, 2006.
He was born October 16, 1941 in Swain County, North Carolina, the
son of the late Carroll B. Bruce and Alvia Jane Watkins Bruce. He was the
widower of Hazel Bruce.
He is survived by two daughters, Connie Daly and Bonnie Hudson both
of Saxe; a son, Eric Bruce of Keysville; two sisters. Rachel Trammel and Carolyn
Earley both of Meherrin and seven grandchildren.
A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Sunday In Smyrna United
Methodist Church Cemetery, Sheppards.

Virginia Fulton, 75
Of Hampden-Sydney
Dies Friday
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, May 30-Virglnia Anne
Perkins Fulton, 75, of Hampden-Sydney, died Friday, May 26, 2006 in Farmville,
after a lengthy illness.
Born March 31, 1931 in Danville, she was the daughter of Earl Clay
Perkins and Ida Bell Clifton Perkins.
In Mrs. Fulton's early years, she was inspired and trained by Anne
Boyer of Danville. That led her to open her own school. The Virginia Fulton
School of The Dance, where she taught until her retirement in 1991. As wife of
the late Coach John Stokeley Fulton, she spent her married years in the
community of Hampden-Sydney, where she often enjoyed the fellowship of students,
alumni, and community members. Mrs. Fulton's home, next to Gammon Gymnasium, was
known for its continuous hospitality there on campus. Football weekends were
special in the Fulton House, as the crowd often spilled into the yard and down
"the hill". She was also a faithful member of College Church.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, J. Stokeley Fulton Jr.
and Marsha Fornash Fulton of Richmond; a daughter and son-in-law; and
grandchildren, Lucy Carter Fulton and Michael Allen Smith, and their children,
Fulton Lee Smith, William Read Smith and Meredith Ann Carter Smith, all of
Naperville, Illinois and a sister, Faye P. Wells of Roanoke. Mrs. Fulton had
many close friends whom she cherished throughout her lifetime. Among them are
Anita Holmes Garland of Hampden-Sydney whom she loved like a "daughter", Shirley
Watson, who helped her greatly in her home, and Betty G. Baldwin of Rice, who
was a friend and cared for her during her illness.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m., this evening
(Tuesday) at Shorter Funeral Home in Farmville.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at College
Church led by the Reverend Dr. Mary C. Orr. Interment will follow at College
Church Cemetery.
The Fulton family requests contributions be sent to the J. Stokeley
Fulton Scholarship Fund at Hampden-Sydney College.

GEORGIA, May 25 - Maddison Ann Seaman, 18,
of Roswell, GA, died Friday, May 19, 2006 after a brave battle with Cystic
Fibrosis.
She is survived by her parents, Jim and Sabrina; a sister. Taylor
James; grandparents, Gene and Barbara Kimbrell and Pamela Seaman;
great-grandfather, C. E. "Ted" Arnold; aunts and uncles, including Steve and Pam
Chapman of Farmville.
A memorial service was held today (Thursday) at Roswell First
Baptist Church.

MEHERRIN, May 25 - Floyd "Jenk" Junior
Jones, 79, of Meherrin, died Sunday, May 14, 2006.
He was born November 22, 1926, a son of the late Annie Lou Walton
and Willie Jones.
Mr. Jones was a veteran of World War II and a member of Forest
Baptist Church. He attended R. R. Moton High School and was employed by Anderson
Lumber Company for over 30 years. He was a member of Charlotte Masonic Lodge
#146.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lorena Troxler Jones; two
sons, Ronald (YuVonne) Jones of Hopewell and Dexter (Rose) Jones of Boydton;
three daughters, Earlene Irving, Debbie (Floyd) Jackson and Wendy Jones all of
Meherrin; two sisters, Catherine Miller and Bessie Jones both of Baltimore, MD;
one brother, Russell (Velma) Jones of Baltimore, MD; 16 grandchildren, Chris,
Vernita, Anthony, Jeremy, Bridget, Blanca, Brittany, Brandon, Michael, Kayla,
Daniel, Vanessa, Roger Pride Jr., Rhesa, Einathan and Carshena; one
great-grandchild, Vanity Hodges and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives
and friends. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Fitzgerald.
A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Friday at Forest Baptist Church,
Meherrin, with interment in the church cemetery.

Dies in Florida
TAMPA, FL, May 23 - Dr. John Joe Mitchell
Sr., 64, husband of Kendal East Mitchell and a resident of Tampa, FL passed away
Tuesday, May 9, 2006, in Tampa, FL.
Born on August 26, 1941, in Hinton, WV and reared in Alderson, WV,
Dr. Mitchell was the son of Isaac L. Mitchell of Alderson, WV and the late
Marybess Caraway Mitchell.
He was retired University Senior Vice President for Advancement and
received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Hampden-Sydney College in 1964, a
Master's Degree from Longwood College in 1976 and a Doctorate Degree in
Education from Virginia Tech in 1986.
Dr. Mitchell was Director of Public Relations from 1971-1974,
Assistant Director of College Relations and Director of Public Relations from
1974-1977, and Director of Public Affairs from 1977-1980 at Longwood College. He
attended numerous development seminars and workshops. He was a member of the
Council of Advancement and Support of Education, National Society for Fund
Raising Executives; served as state program coordinator for the West Virginia
Chapter; and served as President of the Eastern Iowa Chapter in 1991. Civic and
community activities have included Rotary Clubs (past president and board
member), and other civic and professional organizations, Chambers of Commerce
(past president and board member), and the Heart Association (past campaign
chairman and board member). He served as consultant with non-profit
organizations, including recent consulting with Adults Incorporated and the
Grout Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. He was an Episcopalian.
Other than his wife, he is survived by a son John J. Mitchell Jr.
and wife Marie Cairns Mitchell of Tampa, FL; and three grandchildren, Lauren
Marie Mitchell, Zachary David Mitchell and Matthew Isaac Mitchell.
A memorial service was conducted from the Grace Episcopal Church in
Tampa, FL on Saturday, May 20, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Canon B. Twinamaani
officiating. Interment was in West Virginia.

died Sunday, May 21, 2006. She was married to the late Lynford W. Cumbey for 68
years.
Born in Appomattox County, October 21, 1912, she was a daughter of
the late Willie P. and Frances Chaney Lucado.
Mrs. Cumbey was a member of Elon Baptist Church and a seamstress.
She is survived by a daughter, Jean Cumbey Austin of Richmond;
three grandchildren, Jeffrey Austin and his wife, Beth of Richmond, Kevin Austin
of Nashville, TN and Brian Austin of Richmond; two great-grandchildren, Kate and
Ella Austin; one brother, Robert W. Lucado of Newnan, GA and a sister, Arleen L.
David of Charlotte, NC.

Cemetery by the Rev. John Campbell.

Dillwyn
passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 18, 2006 in Charlottesvllle, after a
long illness.
He was the son of Charles (Ducky) Cook of Dillwyn and Barbara Lee
Cook of Smithfield.
He is also survived by his stepmother, Jeri Rhea Cook of Dillwyn;
his stepfather, Howard Cole of Smithfield; sons. Chad A. Cook and wife, Jennifer
and Charles Bradly Cook; two brothers, Charles Douglas Cook and wife, Nancy and
their children, Jason, Taylor and Mathew, Dennis Cook and Angle and Dennis'
children, Jamie Lee and Carlee Mabel and one grandson, Chase Arthur Cook.
A memorial service was held Saturday at New Store Presbyterian
Church.

Dies Thursday
In Maryland
MAY 23 - Arlene Kalata, 64, died Thursday,
May 18, 2006 at the home of her daughter In Elkton, Maryland.
Born March 3, 1942 in Indian Lake, MY, she was the daughter of Fred
and Isabelle (Porter) Blanchard. She was predeceased by her parents, her
husband, Emil Kalata, three sisters, Ida King, Ethel Cole and Lena Beaudet.
She was a graduate of Indian Lake Central School. She married Emil
Kalata on January 13, 1962 in Ballston Spa, MY and lived the life of a Navy wife
throughout the United States while raising their children.
Mrs. Kalata was employed in real estate and tax preparation for
many years. She later owned and operated Knolls Court Motel in Matlacha,
Florida. She enjoyed raising her family and playing cards.
Survivors include one daughter, Winnie Ratasiewicz and her husband,
Ron of Elk-ton, MD; one son, Steven Kalata and his wife, Lydia of Midlothian;
four grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Morse and her husband, Lawrence of
Balston Spa, Diane Aldous and her husband, Walter "Bud" of Cape Coral, FL;
several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Miller Funeral
Home, Indian Lake, NY. Burial will be in Cedar River Cemetery, Indian Lake.
Contributions in Arlene's memory may be directed to a charity of

BUCKINGHAM, May 18 -Annie "Dolly" Bland
Burch, 96, of Buckingham, formerly of Richmond, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006.
Mrs. Burch retired in 1972 from the Division of Motor Vehicles
after 30 years of service. She was a Mother and caretaker to all who knew her.
She is survived by her grandson and his wife. Dale and Diane
Blackburn; four great-grandchildren, Melissa B. Powell, Christopher L.
Blackburn, Meredith B. Dance and Kathryn M. Blackburn; one great-great-grandson,
Mason L. Blackburn; a brother, Virgil Bland and a sister, Roberta B. Bennett.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Lois B. Blackburn, son-in-law, Charles, two
grandsons, three brothers and four sisters.
Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Forest
Lawn Cemetery in Richmond.
A viewing will be at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, and the family
will receive friends at her grandson's home.

William Ryan Norton, age 29, of
Richmond, died on Sunday, May 14, 2006 in a motorcycle accident. He was
preceded in death by his grandmothers. Carmen Fife Debruhl and Clara
Schmidt Norton; his grandfathers, William Debruhl and Roy Noel Norton
Sr. Also preceded in death by his step-father, Thomas D. Reinke.
He is survived by his mother, Deborah Norton Reinke, of Prospect;
his father Roy Noel Norton Jr., of Hartfield; a sister, Rachel Cara
Reinke; two brothers, Caleb Alan Reinke and Jay Johnson Norton; a
special aunt, Teresa Kent, and husband, David; and special loving
cousins.
He was a concrete contractor for Norton Concrete Co. of Richmond.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening from 7 to 9
p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home of Farmville where funeral
services will be conducted in the Chapel on Thursday at 2 p.m.
Remembrances may be made in his memory to the Shriners Children
Hospital or the Cripple Children's Hospital, both in Richmond.

of Drakes Branch, died Thursday, May 11, 2006. She was the widow of Ira E. Hall.
She is survived by one son, Garland Hall; six daughters, Mary Sims,
Bertha Rand, Frances Ward, Doris Newman, Liz Gosik and Margaret Martin; 12
grandchildren, Ann and Lynn Hall, Annette Wallace, Barbara Hall, Brenda Ayers,
Shirley Brown, L. S. Ward, John Ward, D. Lee Harper, Zeb Gosik, Gray Rand and
Linda Atkinson; 16 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. She
was preceded in death by a son, Clarence Hall and a daughter, Jeannie Jones.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday at the Browning Funeral
Home, Keysville, with interment in the Family Cemetery.

Anita Edmonson, 84
Of Farmville
Dies Friday
MAY 16 - Anita W. Edmonson, 84, of
Farmville, died Friday, May 12, 2006 at Southside Community Hospital after a
brief illness.
She was born December 31, 1921 in Springfield, Missouri, the only
child of Lola (Lucas) and Rodney Walton.
She was a graduate of Southwest Missouri Teachers College in
Springfield, and had a long career in education as an elementary school teacher
in Missouri, Maryland and California. During World War II, she worked with The
Manhattan Project with her husband, a nuclear physicist.
A resident of Upland, California for 37 years, she moved to
Farmville in 1993 following the 1990 death of her husband of 44 years, Robert B.
Edmonson.
She is survived by her daughter, Jan Edmonson of Washington, DC, a
diplomat with the U.S. Department of State; her son. Randy Edmonson, Professor
of Art at Long-wood University: daughter-in-law, Cricket Edmonson, art teacher
at Prince Edward County Elementary School and her two grandchildren, Caitlin and
Benjamin, all of Farmville.
She will be interred alongside her husband at Bellevue Memorial
Park, Ontario, California.
Donations may be made in her name to the Beath Animal Shelter in
Dillwyn, The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts or the Moton School in
Farmville.

Brother of Local
Residents, Dies
ORANGE, May 16 - John B. (J. B.) Carter,
83, of Orange, died Sunday, May 14, 2006 at his residence.
He was born January 15, 1923 in Buckingham County, the. son of the
late James N. Carter and Merrie Word Carter.
He graduated from Virginia Tech In 1949 with a B. S. degree in
Agronomy and retired as a Soil Scientist with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. He
was a veteran of the U.S. Marines, serving in the Pacific Theater during World
War II. He was with the 4"' Marine Division on the Marshall Islands, Saipan,
Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was wounded on Iwo Jima and received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Carter was charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Orange, a
member of the American Legion Post 156 and was a member of Trinity United
Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rae C. Carter of Orange; a
son, John B. Carter Jr. (Ben) and his wife, Wanda of Midlothian; two
grandchildren, Christi Carter of Dallas, Texas and Adam Carter of Radford; three
brothers, Charles M. Carter and his wife, Margaret and Robert W. Carter and his
wife, Betty Jo all of Farmvllle and Ray Carter and his wife, Jean of Uriah,
Alabama and a sister, Evylyn Cannon of Bristol, Tennessee. He was preceded in
death by three brothers, George Carter, Earl Carter and James N. Carter Jr.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11:30 a.m. at Trinity
United Methodist Church. The Reverend Forest Porter will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Preddy
Funeral Home, 250 W. Main Street, Orange.

Farmville, and formerly of Chestnut Grove Community in Buckingham, died
Thursday, May 11, 2006.
She was born October 6, 1919 in Burnsville, NC, the daughter of the
late Luther Robert Harris and Lydia Randolph Harris of Sheppards and was one of
fifteen children. She was the wife, predeceased in death by Frank H. Chernault
and Blaine Shelton.
She is survived by two brothers, Francis Harris, Robert Harris and
wife, Bonnie all of Sheppards; four sisters, Gladys Morris of Chestnut Grove,
Daisy Shumaker of Brookneal, Roxie Nester of Lynchburg and Edna Coleman of
Appomattox. She was the mother of Rita S. Hill and husband, Roy, of New Store,
Frederick B. Shelton of Unicoi, TN, Terry G. Shelton of Farmville, Luther Howard
Chernault of Chestnut Grove, Margaret C. Gross of Dinwiddie. She had eight
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews whom she
loved dearly.
Mrs. Chernault was a resident of Trinity Missions Nursing Home at
the time of her death and was a member of Curdsville Church of God. The Reverend
Bill Mitchell and Louise Warner will conduct the graveside funeral service.
Graveside services were held at Trinity Memorial Gardens, Rice, at
2 p.m. Sunday.

MAY 11 - Gladys Margolis Shumaker Rhea,
85, passed away peacefully at CJW Medical Center in Richmond on Sunday, May 7,
2006. She will always be remembered in our hearts.
She was born in Buckingham County on October 26, 1920, the daughter
of the late Benjamin Franklin Shumaker and Carrie Garrett Shumaker. She was a
loving wife to her late husband, Harold Rhea. A longtime resident of Farmville,
Mrs. Rhea was a loving wife and mother, as well as a friend to many. She was a
member of Farmville Baptist Church and the Farmville Moose Lodge.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in law; Mike and Leslie
Rhea of Richmond; three grandchildren, Michael, Gabriel, and Maggie Rhea, of
Richmond; one sister Beatrice Shumaker of Dillwyn; one sister-in-law Docia
Shumaker of Farmville; one nephew, Cecil C. Shumaker of Woodbridge, and one
niece, Ethel S. Smith of Gary, North Carolina.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 12, at 11 a.m. at the
Farmville Baptist Church with a reception to follow at the church.

John T. Thompson Jr.
MAY 11 - John Taylor Thompson Jr., of
Richmond, died Friday, May 5, 2006.
Born in Farmville, Mr. Thompson was the son of Helen O'Ferrall and
John Taylor Thompson and grandson of Col. Charles T. O'Ferrall, former Governor
of Virginia (1894-1898).
A veteran of World War II, he graduated from Stetson University In
Florida. After college he moved to Richmond to be near his brothers and to work
for Prudential in the real estate department. He also worked for the State of
Virginia and in his later years for the Science Museum of Virginia and Ukrop's.
For the past seven years he resided at Ruxton at the Meadows in Goochland. His
health had been falling in recent years.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Frank Knight Thompson and the
Rev. Charles O'Ferrall Thompson.
A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 17 at
Westvlew Cemetery in Farmville.
