Dies in Georgia
DECATUR, GA, Feb. 21 -Francis Sidney
Anderson Jr., 86, of Decatur, Georgia, died Wednesday, February 15, 2006,
following a brief illness.
He was born December 29, 1919 in Farmville, the third child of
Francis Sidney Anderson and Edith Proctor Pollard Anderson.
Mr. Anderson received his Bachelor of Arts from Hampden-Sydney College
and both his Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Theology from Columbia
Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. Ordained by the Presbytery of Atlanta in
1944, he pastored the Barnett Presbyterian Church in Atlanta from 1944 to 1945
and the Porterdale Presbyterian Church in Porterdale, GA. from 1948 to 1957.
Between 1945 and 1948, he served as a Missionary Teacher at the Gammon Institute
in Lavras, Brazil. From 1957 until his retirement in 1988, he served Columbia
Theological Seminary in the various roles of Dean of Students, Registrar,
Director of Field Work, Treasurer and Business Manager and Vice-President for
Financial Affairs. While at Columbia, he pastored some 30 churches in the
Atlanta Presbytery on an interim basis.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Sexton Grayson
Anderson; daughters and son-in-law, Patsy McFarland of Cumming, GA, Ellen
Anderson of Atlanta and Sidney and Stan Tucker of Norcross, GA; granddaughter,
Christy McFarland of Charlottesville; brother, Allan Christian Anderson of Texas
City, TX; sister, Jane Guthrie Anderson dark of Farmville and various nieces and
nephews.
Private graveside services were held Friday at Lawnwood Memorial
Park, Covington, GA.

BLACKSTONE, Feb. 21 - Olin Belle Wells
Blalock, 100, of Blackstone, died Friday, February 17, 2006 at her daughter's
home, surrounded by her loving family. She was the widow of John Joe Blalock.
She is survived by her children, Joseph 0. Blalock, David M.
Blalock and wife, Betty, Dorothy B. Stell and husband, Jimmy, James Steven
Blalock and wife, Jackie, Margaret B. Brockwell and Clinton L. Blalock and wife.
Nancy; grandchildren, Becky Hargrave, Donna Archer, Delilah Smith, Marie
Carsley, Eugene Blalock, Sheree Blalock, Wanda Jackson, Beverly Lang, Perry
Blalock, Wayne Blalock, Anita Lovern, Deborah Brockwell, Teresa Andrews, Alien
Blalock, Sandra Reuss, Kimberly Castle and Ella Sue Schellhaus; 35
great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and
nephews, cousins and a special friend and care-giver, Laura Allgood. She was
preceded in death by her parents, Matthew and Minnie Wells; brothers and
sisters, William, Dewery, Elizabeth, Annie, Little Marrow Sadelia and Swanson
and a son-in-law, Jimmy Brockwell.
Mrs. Blalock was a member of Blackstone Baptist Church, a homemaker
and tobacco farmer. She enjoyed gardening, canning and flowers.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Monday at Hamner-McMillian
Funeral Home with the Rev. G. C. Hughes and the Rev. Billy Blalock officiating.
Burial followed at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery, Baskerville.

Louis J. Risacher, 89
Retired New Jersey
Police Chief, Dies
FEBRUARY 21 - Louis J. Risacher, 89, of
Farmville, died Friday, February 17, 2006.
He was born January 15, 1917 in Haskell, NJ.
Mr. Risacher is survived by his wife of 66 years, Catherine DeBlock
Risacher; one son, Robert L. Risacher and his wife Billie F. Risacher of
Farmville; three grandchildren, Tracy Bristow, Kathy Esser and Daniel Risacher,
their spouses and eight great-grandchildren.
During World War II Mr. Risacher served in the Marine Corps. He had
a career in law enforcement and was a graduate cum laude of William Paterson
College (NJ) and the FBI National Academy. He served as a police officer in Fair
Lawn, NJ for 41 years until his retirement as Chief of Police in 1979.
Chief Risacher contributed to the public service as Deputy Director of
The Police Academy of Bergen County (NJ), was President of the Bergen County
Police Chiefs Assoc., was a member of the NJ Civil Service Commission, and
founded or served a variety of other civic organizations. He was a member of
advisory boards to Bergen County Community College, Rutgers University and
William Paterson College for Police Science and Criminal Justice.
A memorial service was held today (Tuesday).

Dorothy F. Cooney, 77
Formerly of Farmville
Dies In Illinois
CHICAGO, IL, Feb. 16 - Dorothy F. Cooney,
M.D., 77, former Chairman of Radiology at Mercy Hospital in Chicago and at
Southslde Community Hospital in Farmville and an Oregon native, died Friday,
February 10, 2006 after a long struggle with a terminal heart condition.
Dr. Cooney earned her B.S. from New York University and her M.D. at
the University of Oregon in Portland. She studied Hospital Administration at
Northwestern University and was the second woman to graduate from the University
of Chicago Medical School residency program. She was also an energetic supporter
of women in the Medical Sciences. In her private practice in Chicago, she
dedicated her skills to Medicare and Public Aid recipients.
She was the beloved wife of the late Ira Low and the cherished
daughter of the late Leon and Gertrude Cooney of Salem. OR.
She is survived by her siblings, Sarah Cooney of Chicago; Terrance
(Joanne) Cooney of Clovis, CA and Charles "Vance" (Janet) Cooney of Vancouver,
WA. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Maxine Billesbach, Jerome "Jerry"
or "Cyprian" Cooney and Helen "Nellie" Soakup.
A private springtime memorial service is being planned in Oregon.

PROSPECT, Feb. 16 - Mary L. Campbell, 87,
of Prospect, died Monday, February 13, 2006. She was the widow of Robert "Mutt"
Campbell.
Mrs. Campbell's passion was cooking and sewing. She was an avid
exhibitor for the Five County Fair and won the most blue ribbons along with 12
trophies.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann Greene and her
husband, Paul of Farmville and Marie Molnar and her husband, Joseph of
Mechanicsville; her son, Howard "Pete" Campbell and his wife, Linda of Prospect;
three grandchildren, Kevin Foster and his wife, Erica, Cindy Foster, Meredith
Summerall and her husband, Brandon; four brothers, Luke, Scott, Jim and Lemore
LeWarne; two sisters, Gertrude Wells and her husband. Bill and Rachel Turpin.
She also leaves to cherish close family members, Dot B. Campbell. Sarah B. Mick
and Ruth B. Middlebrooks. She was preceded in death by her brothers, David,
Willie and Howard LeWarne and a sister, Frances Kreider.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday in the Chapel of
Shorter Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Michael Browder officiating. Interment
will follow in the Prospect Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
at the funeral home.

MEHERRIN, Feb. 14 - Mrs.
Olivia Hood Hobgood, 84, of Meherrin, died Tuesday, February 14,2006.
Mrs. Hobgood was born in Kinston, NC, the
daughter of the late John C. and Lucy Sanders Hood and was also preceded in
death by her husband, A.D. Hobgood Jr., and two sisters, Lucinda Hollowell and
Anne Capps.
She was an active member of Mt. Pleasant United
Methodist Church for over 60 years. Libby had a passion and love for art and
painting. She worked at A&P Grocery for many years and on their dairy farm. She
and her husband were honored by the Ruritans as the Outstanding Farm Family of
the Year.
She is survived by her daughter, Marsha Anne
Bowman and her husband, Joe; son, Dee Hobgood and wife, Kathy all of Meherrin;
brother, John C. Hood Jr. and wife, Helen of Kinston, NC; two sisters and their
husbands, Marshie and Billy Brewer of Pinkhill, NC, and Betsy and Bob Proctor of
Cary, NC; four grandchildren and their spouses, John and Jody Hogan, Susan and
Morgan Borum, Gus and Jody Hobgood, and Amy and Scott Ayers; nine
great-grandchildren. Brandy, Michael and Aaron Hogan, Morgan Jr., Emily and
Olivia Borum, Quentin and Rachel Hob-good and Austin Ayers; many nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday,
Feb. 15, at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Meherrin with Pastor Jan
Johnson and Rev. Henry Butler officiating. Interment will follow in the church
cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m.,
Tuesday, Feb. 14, at the Shorter Funeral Home.

Dies Thursday
FEBRUARY 14 - Edgar
Powell, 91, of Farmville, died Thursday, February 9, 2006.
He was born on December 8, 1914 in Manhattan, New
York, the son of the late Lucille Hennan and Evan Powell.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years. Sue
Watson Powell; three daughters, Sharyn Abernatha of Long Beach, California,
Deborah Greulich and her husband, James of Wantage, New Jersey and Barbara
Morris and her husband, James of Burkeville; his grandchildren, Chris Greulich,
Keeley Greulich Castillo, Cannon Greulich, Geoffrey Greulich, Gretchen Greulich,
Richard Morris, Joshua Morris, Sudie Abernatha and Maggie Abernatha.
Mr. Powell graduated from Paterson State Teachers
College and Syracuse University and received his Master Degree from Columbia
University. He served his country in the US Army during World War II in France
and Germany and flew a piper cub as a spotter pilot. After the war, he continued
his service in the US Army Reserves and rose through the ranks retiring as a
Lieutenant Colonel. After 35 years of service, having taught school in
Bloomfield, New Jersey and having become school principal, he retired and moved
to Farmville in 1976. He was also a member of the Farmville Presbyterian Church
and the Retired Officer's Club.
Services were held 1 p.m. Monday at Farmville
Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Joseph C. McCutchen, officiating.
Interment followed in Spring Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, Darlington Heights.
The family suggests donations be made to The
Farmville Habitat for Humanity or the Farmville Presbyterian Church.

Nannie Marie Hackett Ballowe, 66, of Midway Mills Lane, Wingina, passed away
Thursday morning, February 9, 2006 at her residence surrounded by all of her
loving and caring children.
Nannie was born February 22, 1939 in Buckingham
County, a daughter of the late T. H. Hackett and Vera Mae Stroup Hackett.
She was preceded in death by her husband Willie
L. Ballowe Jr. in 1997.
Nannie was a member of Bethany United Methodist
Church in Norwood.
She is survived by three daughters, Peggy M.
Saunders and husband, Sam of Shipman, Anna B. Williams and husband, Tommy of
Shipman and Shelia B. Savage and husband, Hal "Duke" of Wingina; two sons, Vince
L. Micklem of Weyers Cave and Darrell A. Branch and wife, Wanda of Appomattox; a
brother, Donnie R. Hackett and wife, Ann of Wingina; two sisters, Ida Bryant and
husband, Oscar of Appomattox and Judy H. Rosser of Charlotte, NC; ten
grandchildren, Brandon, Christopher, Harold, Kimberly, D. J., Derek, Megan,
Brittany, Kasey and Samantha; a very special great niece, Lislie whom Nannie
considered her a grandchild along with several other nieces, nephews, cousins
and close friends.
A funeral service was held Saturday, February 11
at the Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovingston. The Rev. Bill Fulk, Rev.
Richard Lilly and Rev. Buddy Bryant officiated. Interment followed in the Mount
Tabor Cemetery in Buckingham.

Clinton Repass Jr., 80, of Wingina, died Saturday, February 4, 2006 at his

Born February 3, 1926 in Bland County, he was the
son of the late James Clinton Repass Sr. and Zola Belle Morehead Repass.
Mr. Repass had served the US Army Air Corp and
retired from I.T.T. in Salem after over 25 years of employment.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Marshall

Mrs. Adcock was a longtime, active member of
Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Glenmore, the E.C.W., Buckingham County Arts Council,
a 38 year member of the former Beesville Home Demonstration Club, a former
teacher in the "4-H" Summer Program and was honored by the Buckingham County
Chamber of Commerce as "The Best Grandmother of 2004."
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m.
Saturday, February 4, 2006 at Scottsville Cemetery with the Reverend Michael
Murphy officiating.
The family will receive friends 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Friday, February 3, 2006, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, Scottsville.

and the Southslde Shrine Club.
