Obituary

of

Kennell A. Jackson, Jr.

Kennell A. Jackson Jr. was born on March 19, 1941 to Kennell and Lottie Jackson of Farmville, Virginia.

He attended the local public schools, graduating from Robert R. Moton High School in June of 1958. He continued his education and completed his undergraduate degree in 1962 at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), in Hampton, Virginia, graduating with highest honors. This would lead to a lifetime of academic pursuit, along with numerous honors and achievements. Fellowships to study at the University of California — Los Angeles, the University of Ghana and Cambridge University in England preceded his receiving his doctorate degree from UCLA. His academic career culminated with his being promoted to a full professorship in the History Department at Stanford University in California prior to his death. Kennell passed away on November 21, 2005 at Stanford Hospital. He was 64 years old.

During his life, his work and personal interests took him far from his beginnings in Farmville, Virginia, the town of his birth. Despite this, he always held his home and his family close to his heart. He attributed a great deal of credit to his parents who he recognized as having instilled core values that would serve him throughout his life. His parents placed a great deal of emphasis on the importance of education and encouraged respect for fellow human beings. Both exhibited wonderful examples of service to others. These examples were not lost on Kennell. He would prove to use them well.

His immediate family survives him: his brother, Otis Jackson, his niece Adrienne Jackson and his sister-in-law, Ellen Jackson, all of Chesapeake, Virginia. He was blessed with a host of relatives and friends, all of whom mourn his passing.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, February 4 at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church Cemetery in Cumberland County.

Bland-Reid Funeral Home is in charge of service.
