BUCKINGHAM, Jan. 1 - Joseph Franklin Love, Jr., 83, of Buckingham, died
Tuesday, December 30,2003.
He was born September 30, 1920 in Asheville, NC, a son of the late Joseph
F. Love, Sr. and Agnes Ashton Love. He was preceded in death by a brother, Craig
Love.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth June Garrett Love;
children, Gary J. Love of Buckingham, Rosemary L. Booker of Gladstone and Steven
C. Love of Phenix; a sister, Bernice Schuler of Black Mountain, NC; two
brothers, Samuel Love and Mac Love both of Black Mountain, NC; 13 grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the Dunkum Funeral Home,
Dillwyn, with interment in Buckingham Community Cemetery with Military Honors.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at
the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Buckingham Rescue Squad
or the Dillwyn Fire Department.

Resident, Dies
BLACKSTONE, Jan. 1 -Charlie Warren Green, Sr., 93, of
Blackstone, died Thursday, December 25, 2003. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Lucille Blanche Spencer Green.
He is survived by his son, Charlie Warren Green, Jr. and his wife,
Myra of Farmville; his daughter. Nancy Green Hood and her husband, Alan of
Powhatan; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Pryor Green of Farmville and a brother,
Edward Walter Green, 100, of Roxboro, NC.
Mr. Green was a long term merchant and a former employee of the
Town of Black-stone. He was a member of Crenshaw United Methodist Church Men's
Bible Class in Blackstone and a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Marks United
Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Marks United Methodist
Church or the church's cemetery fund, 8254 Hungarytown Road, Crewe, VA 23930.

Charles A. Anderson, 76

JANUARY 1 - Charles A. Anderson, 76, of
Monsey, New York, died Thursday, December 18, 2003.
He was born November 18, 1927 in Andersonville, Buckingham County, to the
late Herbert Greenway and Alma Virginia Abernathy Anderson.
Mr. Anderson graduated from Buckingham Central High School in 1944,
went on to Virginia Polytechnic Institute, was drafted in the spring of his
sophomore year, served his country proudly 1946-47, and returned to Tech and
graduated with degree in Agriculture Economics
He was a retired Metal Technician for MRC in Orangeburg, NJ for 27
years. He was a member of the Tappan Zee Barber Shop Chorus and the Hudson
Valley Antique Club.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Johnson Anderson;
daughters. Susanne Denis Nolan of Monroe, NY and Charlene Ruth Reyes and her
husband, Ralph of Stony Point, NY; one brother, Dr. H. Powell Anderson of
(Andersonville) Dillwyn; one sister, Martha A. Rollings of Dendron and two
grandchildren, J. T. and Nicholas Nolan. He was predeceased by his stepmother,
Vida Abernathy Anderson.
A funeral service was held December 22 at Purvlance Funeral Home
with interment in Airmont Lutheran Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at Bethel United Methodist Church,
Andersonville, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2004.

Dies December 24
JANUARY 1 - Lillian Emily Shaur, 94, of
Hutchinson, Minnesota, died Wednesday, December 24,2003.
She was born February 28, 1909 in Rich Valley Township, McLeod
County, a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Konerza Makovsky.
Mr. and Mrs. Shaur farmed near Hutchinson, Minnesota and also later
near Columbia. Mr. Shaur preceded his wife in death in 1992 and she then
returned to Minnesota.
She is survived by nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held December 29 at Grace Bible Church in
Silver Lake, MN. Interment will be Oakwood United Methodist Church Cemetery in
Columbia at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 4.

Dies Monday
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Dec. 30 - Dr. Graves Haydon Thompson, 96, of
Hampden-Sydney, died Monday, December 29, 2003 at his residence.
He was born May 4, 1907 in Charleston, WV, a son of the late Ernest
and Jimmie Graves Thompson.
Dr. Thompson was a retired Latin and Greek professor at Hampden-Sydney College.
He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Short and her husband,
Alexander of Baltimore, MD and Cynthia Modlin and her husband, Wayne of
Midlothian and five grandchildren, Joseph, Ashley and Justin Short, Courtney and
James Alien Thompson Modlin.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at College Church in
Hampden-Sydney with interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the
residence, 220 College Road, Hampden-Sydney.

DECEMBER 30 - Harkins Arthur Kelly, 83, died Wednesday, December 24
in Charlottesville.
Formerly of Farmvllle, he had made his home in Jacksonville,
Florida for the past 25 years and had recently moved to Scottsville, to live
with one of his sons.
He was born November 18, 1920 in Dickenson County, Virginia, a son
of the late Sally Baker Kelly and Harkins Andrew Kelly.
A retired farmer, he was the widower of the late Christine Ferguson
Kelly and Frances Fleming Kelly Pugh.
He is survived by five daughters, Dorothy K. Perry and her husband,
Victor of Morehead, KY, Mary K. Farrell and her husband, James of Rice, Phyllis
K. Gilbert of Farmville, Joyce K. Fore and her husband. Buckle of Farmville and
Nancy K. Wood and her husband. Billy of Church Road; three sons, Eugene Kelly
and his wife, Martha of Powhatan, Dennis Kelly and his wife, Brenda of
Scottsville and Arthur Kelly of St. Louis, MO. A fourth son, Gary preceded him
in death. He is also survived by brothers, Clyde Kelly of Richwood, OH; Oley
Kelly of Fort Blackmore, Danny Joe Kelly of Stafford, Elzie Kelly of
Spotsylvania, Donald Kelly of Webber City, Bobble Ray Kelly of Clintwood,
Chester Kelly of Detroit, MI and three sisters; Nina Fleming of Madison Heights,
MI, Draxie Johnson of Kingsport, TN and Hazel Smallwood of Alexandria; 25
grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. He
was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service was held Saturday, December 27 at the Prospect
Gospel Tabernacle with interment in the church cemetery.

DECEMBER 30 - Jack Carrington Wilson, 82, of Farmville, died
Friday, December 26, 2003.
He was born May 29, 1921 In Cumberland County, a son of the late
Julia Holman Wilson and William Archer Wilson.
Mr. Wilson served in the United States Navy during World War II and
was the owner and operator of Wilson Electric Company in Farmville for 48 years.
He was an avid hunter and a founding member of the Square Hunt Club.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Oliver Wilson and a sister.
Nancy E. Wilson of Richmond. He is also survived by one son. Tony R. Mitchell
and his wife, Joyce; four daughters, Karen Story and her husband, Rob, Judy
Layne and her husband, David, Jackie Spears and her husband, Raymond, Amy
Beatson and her husband, Guerry; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at Cumberland Presbyterian Church on
Sunday, December 28 at 2 p.m. with Interment in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Prince Edward County
Rescue Squad or Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

CHARLOTTE CH, Dec. 30 -Donald Yauch Bennett, 83, of Charlotte Court
House, died Monday, December 29, 2003 in Farmvllle.
He was born August 11, 1920 in Riverdale, Maryland, a son of the
late Reginald Donald Yauch and Gertrude Yauch Bennett,
Mr. Bennett served in the U. S. Army Air Corps and was retired from
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
He is survived by his wife, Josle "Jodie" M. Bennett; one son, Reginald Donald
Bennett and his wife, Angle of Hyattsville, MD: one stepdaughter. Jenny M.
George and her husband, Fred of Manhattan, Kansas; one brother, A. Marshall
Irving Bennett of Stoney Brook, NY; grandchildren, Rachel, Jordan, Victoria and
Zachary Bennett, Joe and Angle George and Angel Ocasio; great-grandchildren,
Chelsey, Matthew and Libby George, Amanda and Jonathan Ocasio; several
sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of
Shorter Funeral Home, Farmvllle, with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens,

Saturday, December 27, 2003. Her mother Maude M. Robertson, preceded her in
death.
She is survived by her husband, Alvin Earl Spurlock; a son, Greg
Spurlock; a daughter, Patti Hodges: two grandchildren, Karl and Will Hodges; her
father, William Robertson, Sr.; a brother, William Robertson, Jr.; two sisters,
Shirley King and Elizabeth Monk.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) at the Woody
Funeral Home, Richmond, with Interment in Dale Memorial Park.

Former Resident Of
Dillwyn, Dies
DECEMBER 30 - Norberta L.
Pelletier, 92, a recent resident of Ridgefield, CT and had lived In Closter, NJ
for a long time, died Monday, December 22, 2003 in Hancock Hall, Danbury, CT
following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Cleary Pelletier,
who passed away in January of 1989.
Mrs. Pelletier was born in Elizabeth, NJ on September 26, 1911, a
daughter of the late Alphonse and Anna Ward Lutz. While living in Closter, she
worked as a secretary and real estate agent with the former Pelletier Agency.
She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of the America Legion in Closter, and
also a member of St. Mary's Choir there.
In 1980, she and her husband relocated to Dillwyn, and remained
there for 12 years. Here she was active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
in nearby Farmville and was a communicant in Buckingham County at the Church of
the Nativity.
Survivors include four daughters, Maryann Pelletier-Brooks and her
husband, Bryan of Zaragoza, Spain, Margaret Bartenhagen and her husband, Nick of
Brattleboro, VT, Jeanne Sanna and her husband, Mark of Ridgefield, CT and Claire
Pelletier of Linden, NJ; grandchildren, Erik Bartenhagen and is wife, Nicole
Noel, Jessica Bartenhagen, Matthew Sanna and Meredith Sanna.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday at Sacred Heart
Church, Georgetown, CT. The Rev. Mark E. Grimes, Parochial Vicar, officiated.
The interment will take place Saturday, January 3 at 10 a.m. in the Church of
the Nativity Cemetery, Buckingham County.

Elihu C. Ellett. Jr., 85
DECEMBER 30 - Elihu C. Ellett, Jr., died at Brookview Lodge in
Farmville on Saturday, December 27, 2003.
He was born April 6, 1918 in Jennings Ordinary, the oldest son of
Elihu C. Ellett and Pattye Hubbard Ellett. He was preceded in death by his wife,
Shirley Rebecca Ellett, who died February 11, 1995.
He is survived by three sons, Clifford Paul Ellett of Richmond,
Marshall L. Ellett of Farmville and Edward Carlton Ellett of Nottoway County;
seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren' his youngest brother, Joel Motley
Ellett of Burkburnett, Texas and his youngest sister, Margaret Ellett Anderson
of Alpharetta, Georgia,
Mr. Ellett attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State
University and is a veteran of World War II, having served as both an enlisted
man and officer. He was a former sheriff of Nottoway County and a retired
farmer. He was a charter member of Post 7819 Veterans of Foreign Wars, served as
commander of Post 50 American Legion, Lt. Commander Fourth District American
Legion and Chairman Law and Order Committee, American Legion Department of
Virginia.
He was active in many facets of the Nottoway County government. He
served as chairman of the Nottoway County School Board Selection Committee. Mr.
Ellett served on this commission and its predecessor, the Nottoway School
Trustee Electoral Board, for over 15 years. He served as chairman of the
Nottoway County Zoning Committee, served on the Road Review Board, the Nottoway
Board of Assessors, and was Advisor to the Nottoway County Draft Board for 36
Years.
Mr. Ellett served as president of the Nottoway County Farmers Union
and was a member of the executive committee of Virginia Farmers Union. He served
as chairman of the Nottoway County Democratic Committee, President of the
Burkeville Ruritan Club, Lt. Governor Ruritan National Appomattox District and
President of the Burkeville Parent Teachers Association.
He was a member of Wards Chapel United Methodist Church,
Jennings Ordinary, and served as Superintendent of Sunday School at Wards Chapel
and as Superintendent of Sunday School at Barker Memorial United Methodist
Church, Burkeville. Mr. Ellett served as charges lay leader Burkeville Charge
United Methodist Church and taught the Men's Bible Class at Barker Memorial
United Methodist Church in Burkeville for many years.
Funeral services were held at Wards Chapel United Methodist
Church today (Tuesday) at 2 p.m.
