      ARVONIA, Dec. 13 - Betty Scott Jones, 74, of Arvonia, died Monday, December 12, 2005.
      She is survived by husband, Kenneth L. Jones; a son. Jack S. Jones of Midlothian; a daughter, Elizabeth N. Jones of Ivy and four grandchildren.
      Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Presbyterian Church of New Canton with interment in the church cemetery.

      BURKEVILLE, Dec. 8 - Samuel "Buddin" Hines Jr., 57, of Burkeville, died Tuesday, December 6, 2005.
     He is survived by his wife, Shirley Atkins Hines; his mother, Juanlta Finchum Hines of Burkeville; three daughters, Shirley Ann Hines of Green Bay, Vickie H. Brooks of Chatham and Debbie H. Huddleston of Crewe; a brother, Jones E. Hines of Amelia; five sisters, Dolly H. Napier of Jetersville, Lottie H. Bowman, Betty H. Coleman and Catherine Hutchinson all of Burkeville and Susan Quig of Green Bay; 12 grandchildren, Tiffany and Joshua Hines, Winston and Jessica Marsden, Michael and Kimberly Kemp, Thomas, Tara and Cheyanne Huddleston and Maria, Damian and Hannah Rodriguez. He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Hines Sr. and a sister. Daisy Ann Hines.
      Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Earl Wallace and Pastor Frank Baldwin officiating.

Dies December 5

      DECEMBER 8 - Clifford A. "Blinky" Jones Jr. passed away, Monday, December 5, 2005.
      He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mildred Snelcer Jones;two daughters, Roxanne and her husband. Jimmy Stinson, Dianne and her husband, Jimmy Daly; five grandchildren, Stacy and her husband, Andrew Hartless, Steven Stinson and his wife, Jamie, Matthew, Jason and Starr Daly; two great-granddaughters, Camryn Hartless and Zoee Stinson, all of Buckingham; a son by choice, Ronnie Sutler of Bremo Bluff.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford A. Jones Sr. and Annie Davis Jones.
      He was a member of Arvon Baptist Church, served in the United States Army, and served as a Deputy Sheriff of Buckingham County. He served two consecutive terms on the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors.
      He touched the lives of many young people through his mentorship in basketball, football, softball and baseball.
      Graveside services were held 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Mount Zion Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. John Mann and assisted by the Rev. Owen Moore.

      She is survived by her husband, Samuel B. Whorley; a son, Samuel B. Whorley, Jr. of Chesterfield; three sisters, Mary Shumaker and Annie Whorley of Richmond and Gertrude Moss of Dillwyn; one grandson and three great-grandchildren.

      RICHMOND, Dec. 6 - Lillian Southworth Collins, 84, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2005.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Junius E. Collins; and she was the daughter of the late Mattie Seal Southworth and Luther Joseph Southworth of Caroline County.
      She is survived by her children, Nancy Southall and husband, Archer, David Collins and wife, Sandra and Donna Brenner and husband, Stephen; five grandchildren, Kimberly Harris, Lynne Sexton, Laurie Mills, Jennifer Taylor and Michael Southall; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Audrey Woliver.
      Mrs. Collins was very dedicated to her family, children and grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of the Hanover Church of the Nazarene.
      The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond, where services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, December 7. Interment will follow in Signal Hill Memorial Park.

      She was born May 25, 1966 in Dayton, Ohio, a daughter of Michael Eugene Clark of Dayton, Ohio and the late Constance Ann Jones Lester. She was preceded in death by a son, Tyler Michael Wubben.
      In addition to her father, she is survived by a daughter, Amanda Ann Rae Clark; a son, Kevin Andrew Mills both of Dillwyn; a sister, Elizabeth Ann Clark of Dayton, Ohio; three brothers, Todd Michael Clark of Dillwyn. Kevin Lee Phillips and Christopher M. Clark both of Dayton, Ohio; two granddaughters, Patience Marie Mills of North Carolina and Autumn Nicole Mills of Dillwyn.

      Mrs. Lawrence was raised in Buckingham County. She was retired from TranSouth Financial Corp. as an account clerk.
      She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Lewis N. Lawrence; her mother, Virginia Charlton Spencer of Dillwyn; a daughter, Sarah L. Shaffer and husband, David of Suffolk; a son, Preston D. Lawrence of Portsmouth; two grandsons, Stephen Shaffer and Mathew Shaffer: a brother, James L. Spencer of Griffin, GA; sisters-in-law, Judy Spencer of Griffin, GA, Connie Abrames of Chesapeake, Susan Fleming of Portsmouth, Debbie Lawrence of Chesapeake, Linda Lawrence of Garner, NC; brothers-in-law, Edward Abrames of Chesapeake, Edward Lawrence Jr. of Garner, NC, Charles Lawrence of Chesapeake; six nieces and four nephews.       Born May 25, 1948 in Pikeville, Kentucky, she was a daughter of the late Purvis J. and Virgielene Kendrick Adkins.
      She is survived by her husband, Bobby Lee Wolfe; a daughter, Tammy W. Dunkley and husband. Rock of Abilene; two sons, Terry Lee Wolfe and Barry L. Wolfe both of Prospect; two sisters, Jacqueline McCauley of Boydton and Deborah O'Neal of Brandon, Florida and two granddaughters, Jessica Lee Dunkley of Abilene and Ashley Marie Wolfe of Farmville.

      She was born November 25, 1916 in Buckingham County.
      She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Minnie Murphy and her son, James Murphy: Dorothy Mitchell and her daughter, Karen Morton and husband, Kenneth, Lillian Mitchell and her children, Harold Mitchell Jr., John Mitchell, Gloria Stout and Sue B. Nichols; nephews, Bill and Joe Mitchell; niece, Janie Peters and special friends, Lin and Tom Varner.
      Miss Murphy was a nurse with the US Army during World War II and was the retired Director of Education of the Richmond Memorial School of Nursing. She was an active member of Patterson Avenue Baptist Church prior to her illness, serving as deaconess and Sunday School teacher.
      Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Patterson Avenue Baptist Church. Interment will follow at 2 p.m. in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, New Canton.

Meek of Richmond; two brothers, Harold Davis of Dillwyn and Beverly Davis of Rocky Mt., NC; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Obituary
of
Dr. Rev. Luther Dewey Ripley

      The Dr. Rev. Luther Dewey Ripley, 71, was born on March 28, 1934 and went to be with the Lord on November 27,2005.
      He served four years in the U.S. Navy and was a Korean War veteran and was honorably discharged on May 19, 1961.
      He received his doctorate of Ministry degree in Theology from Bethany Theological Seminary in Dothan, Alabama. Dr. Ripley graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 grade average. For his outstanding work, he was awarded a Scholastic Medallion. His graduate and undergraduate work was also completed at Bethany Theological Seminary.
      Dr. Ripley was widely known as pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Rice, Virginia, for 24 years. He preached using only the 1611 King James version of the Bible, believing this to be the preserved Word of God and used no other translations. In retirement, he became a substitute Pastor for Grace Baptist Temple in Blackstone, Virginia, where he has been a member for five years.
      He loved the Lord with all his heart and was faithful unto death.
      Luther D. Ripley married his childhood sweetheart. Nancy Louise Johnson. Their union of 52 years produced four children.
      Dr. Ripley was preceded in death by a son. Rev. Clayton K. Ripley, of Hampton, Virginia. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Johnson Ripley; three children, Carlton Ripley, of Amelia, Teresa Keatts, of Danville and Serena Hodges, of Farmville. Luther was also a proud grandfather with four grandchildren.
      The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 5:30-7 p.m. at Grace Baptist Temple in Blackstone. The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Grace Baptist Temple with interment at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice.

      He was born December 24, 1021 in Prince Edward County, a son of the late Crawley dark Campbell and Marguerite Allen Campbell.
     Mr. Campbell served in World War II and was a disabled veteran. He was a charter member of the Prospect Volunteer Fire Department.
      He is survived by his wife, Mary LeWarne Campbell; a son, Howard Campbell and wife, Linda of Prospect; two daughters, Marie C. Molnar and husband, Joseph of Mechanicsville and Ann C.       NOVEMBER 29 - Carlton "Jimmy" Huddleston, 90, died on Monday, November 28, 2005, in Farmville.
      Born in Buckingham County on May 5, 1915, he was the son of Drury and Rosa Jamerson Huddleston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lee Huddleston, a sister, Goldie Chance and a nephew, L. Verne Huddleston Jr.
      Survivors include a niece, Patricia H. Moore, of Glasgow; a nephew, Malvin Huddleston of NC; seven great-nieces and nephews; one great-great-niece and many cousins. A long time resident of Trinity Mission In Farmville, he leaves many friends and extended family members there.
      "Uncle Jimmy's" gentle soul, loving nature and story telling of days long past will be greatly missed by his loving niece, Kathy Huddleston and great-niece, Samantha Bernstein, both of Palmyra and his cousin, Malcolm Oliver, of Dillwyn.
      Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 2, at the Jamerson Family Cemetery in Dillwyn, conducted by the Reverend Otis Worley.

      CREWE, Nov. 29 - Oliver Quentin Cassada, of Crewe, died Tuesday, November 22, 2005.
      He was born August 29, 1918 in Crewe, a son of the late Ed and Beatrice Bible Cassada of Bible Road. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Carolyn Nunnelly Cassada.
      Mr. Cassada was a member of Crewe Baptist Church and a former member of the Crewe Kiwanis Club. Prior to returning to Crewe in 1986, he had been a member of Hilton Baptist Church, Newport News, for over 40 years. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and New Guinea. He retired from American Oil Refinery in Yorktown in 1980 after more than 40 years of service.
      He is survived by his daughter, Linda F. Cassada of Victoria; grandson, Mark W. Vaughan of Lexington Park, MD; his wife of seven years, Ann B. Cassada and her sons. Jerry Cochran of Virginia Beach, Harold Cochran of Richmond and Chuck Cochran of Montgomery, AL; brothers, D. Franklin Cassada of Crewe and Bobby Lee Cassada of Keyser, WV and his sister, Hazel C. Liv esay of Petersburg.
      Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Friday at Crewe Baptist Church, with Dr. Ben Powers, the Rev. Brad Word and Walter Davis officiating. Burial followed in Crewe Cemetery.

Mr. West served on the Board of Supervisors from January 1, 1996 to December 31, 1999.

Screamer Fleming Rose; five sisters, Vera Howard (Herbert) Alice Jefferson (Carl), Shirley Lipscomb (Raymond, Jr.), Ann Carter (Michael, Sr.) and Cordell Wright (Burton, Jr.); an uncle, Elder Olander Fleming Sr.; two aunts, Minerva Fleming and Betty West Grant; step-granddaughter, Kia Henderson; four nieces; six nephews: three great-nephews; three great-nieces and a host of cousins, three devoted, Olander Fleming Jr., James Johnson Jr., and Tyrone West and other relatives and friends.
