Dies Monday


       OCTOBER 20 - Ruby Dalton Overby, 80, of Waldorf, Maryland, formerly of Farmville, died Monday, October 17, 2005.
      Mrs. Overby was the daughter of the late Annie Jones and Joseph Lee Dalton. She was a homemaker and enjoyed being with her grandchildren and playing Yahtzee. She was the widow of Lawrence "Bruce" Overby.
      She is survived by seven children, Joan Overby of Accokeek, MD, Nancy Walker of Waldorf, MD, James Overby of Hampton Roads, Gwen Monroe of LaPlata, MD, Mary Jane Robison of Waldorf, MD, Marilyn Bouse of Danville and Larry Overby of Waldorf, MD; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five sisters and one brother.
      Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at the Shorter Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery, Rice.
      The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

      OCTOBER 20 - Dorothy Huddle Sullivan, 90, died Monday, October 17, 2005 in Lynchburg.
      Mrs. Sullivan, who resided in Lynchburg, was born in Ada, Oklahoma, but spent most of her life in San Antonio, Texas. Trained as an English teacher, she ultimately worked in the oil business for more than twenty years in San Antonio, Texas. She was an active Episcopalian and a member of Daughters of the King.
      She is survived by her daughter, Barbara A. Dixon and son-in-law. Gene B. Dixon, Jr. of Buckingham County; three grandchildren, Guy B. Dixon and granddaughter-in-law Julie Kline Dixon of Buckingham County, Arch H. Dixon of New York, New York and E. Vail Dixon of Buckingham County; two great-grandchildren, Adelaide M. Dixon and Waller B. Dixon; three nieces, Anne M. Wood and Denise H. D'Abre both of Texas and Ruth Anne McDonald of Indiana; three great nieces and nephews, Shannon Wood of Texas, Lisa McDonald and Scott McDonald both of Indiana and her sister-in-law, Fran W. Huddle of Texas.
      Arrangements are pending. Interment will be at Peaceful Valley in Buckingham.
      Family will receive friends immediately following the ceremony.
      Memorial contributions can be made to Randolph Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg or the Alzheimer's Association

"Billy" Eanes, 59

Dies October 10


      OCTOBER 18 - William Ernest Eanes, Sr. "Billy", died Monday, October 10, 2005 at his home.
      He was the 11th child of the late Taylor and Gertrude R. Eanes. He was born May 17, 1946 in Prince Edward County.
      He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church of Farmvllle and a 1967 graduate of R.R. Moton High School.
      Mr. Eanes was a very successful business owner. He was owner of Eanes 76 Service Station, Record Shop, Ernest Disco, Eanes Grocery, His & Her Barber Shop, Billy's Gold Jewelry and a Family Seafood Restaurant, Captain Sea's.
      In the early 70's he worked for Safeway for 17 years and was a school bus driver for 23 years for Prince Edward County Schools. He was a brick mason and was one of the brick layers at his seafood restaurant.
      He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Phyllicia Eanes; four children. Lisa Eanes Woody and husband, James of Richmond, Kimberli Young and husband, Arthur of Durham, NC, Porsha and William Eanes, Jr. (Big E) of Farmville; four grandchildren, Justin and Arianna Young, Jasmine and James Woody, III; six sisters, Margaret Reed, Jean Guzman, Thelma Smith, Sylvia Holman of Farmville, Yvonne Howell of Powhatan and Carrie Walker of Durham, NC; nine brothers, Louis of Burkeville, Ralph, James, McCarthy, Nathaniel, Vincent, Malvin, Royal and Larry Eanes and an adopted brother, John Ross of Farmville; mother-in-law, Kathren Whitehead and father-in-law, Minister, Beverly Smith, Sr. of Keysvllle; 13 sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; one God daughter, April M. Ross; two uncles; five aunts and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Quinton, Thomas, Sylvester and Wilbert Eanes and one sister, Eunice G. Booker.
      Funeral services were held 1 p.m. Friday, October 14 at New Life Assembly of God, Farmville, with interment in the Eanes Family Cemetery.

Dies September 25

      MEHERRIN, Oct. 11 - Jesse Junious Staples, 77, died Sunday, September 25, 2005 in Meherrin.
      He was born In Lunenburg County on March 1, 1928, a son of the late Dock S. and Clara Jennings Staples.
      Mr. Staples was a member of Springfield Baptist Church in Meherrin and served as co-chairman of the Trustee Ministry and was a member of the Senior Choir, Men's Choir and the Combined Choir.
      He is survived by three sons, Jesse, Jr. of Sanford, FL, Carnell (Billy) of Lakeworth, FL and Steven of Newark, NJ; one daughter, Clara Johnson of Spotsylvania; three brothers, Carline of Meherrin, Dock of Reading, PA and David of Lancaster, PA; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Mary L. (Nee Quick) Staples; one son, Bernard; two brothers, Elbert and Matthew and two sisters, Elanora Hurt and Evelyn Collins.
      Funeral services were held Saturday, October 1 at Springfield Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

      ROCKLIN, CA, Oct. 11 - Caleb Franklin "Frank" Kelsey, 89, died Monday, September 26, 2005.
      He was born January 1, 1916 In Farmville, to the late Philander and Ruby Kelsey.
      Mr. Kelsey served in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945. He was a retired ironworker and was a member of Iron Workers Union No. 416. He was a member of Calvary Bible Church and enjoyed splitting wood and gardening.
     He is survived by his daughters, Carolyn Kelsey and Donna Kelsey both of Grass Valley, CA; sons. Ken Kelsey of Rocklin, CA and Gary Kelsey of Applegate, CA; six granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Lucille Gee, Jean Palmer and Rachel McBride all of Farmville, Rebecca Newman of Clarksville, Ruth Simpson of Prospect, Helen Breckinridge of Hampden-Sydney and Nancy Williams of Newport News and brothers, Ray Kelsey of Prospect and Carl Kelsey of Farmville. He was preceded In death by his wife, Louise Kelsey; sister, Libby Welchlin and brothers. Philander Kelsey and Milton Kelsey.
      Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 4 in Greenwood Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Grass Valley, CA.

      OCTOBER 11 - Frank Melvin Spady, I, 76, died Sunday, October 9, 2005 in Myrtle Beach, SC.
      He was a native of Portsmouth and a retired CWO-4 in the U.S. Marine Corps after 30 years. He served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was past master of Farmville Masonic Lodge #41, past governor of Farmville Moose Lodge #568 and lifetime member of the VFW in Farmville.
      He is survived by his wife, Virginia S. Spady; son, Frank M. Spady, II and wife Carolyn of Portsmouth; sisters, Betty Bachana of Portsmouth and Audrey Mae Brinkley and husband, William of Suffolk; brothers, Earl T. Spady and wife, Mary Rose of Suffolk; grandchildren, Frank Spady III and wife, Vanessa of Virginia Beach and Amy Sue Hill of Portsmouth and six great-grandchildren.
      A funeral service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
      The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

      OCTOBER 6 - Fannie Hamlett Yeatts, 93, of Midlothian, formerly of Farmville, died Tuesday, October 4, 2005.
      She was the widow of Herbert Yeatts and the daughter of the late Edgar and Grade Hamlett.
      Mrs. Yeatts was a long time member of Worsham Baptist Church.
      She is survived by three daughters, Lucille Henshaw and Margaret Price both of Midlothian and Shirley Blackstock and husband, C. E. of Chase City; two sons, Roger Yeatts of Midlothian and Jerry Yeatts of Farmville; a sister, Thelma Yeatts of White Plains; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter, Frances Eger and grandson, Scottie Price.

      She was born April 21, 1920, the fifth of seven children, to James G. Clifton and Minnie Adklns Clifton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, Ernest Nelford Pierce; one son, Gerald (Jerry) David Pierce; her son-in-law, Stanley Thomas Gilley and all her siblings.
      She is survived by her son, Robert Nell Pierce; her daughter, Linda Pierce Gilley: two grandsons, Erik Scott Gilley and Kevin Thomas Gilley; two granddaughters-in-law, Sami Dail Brown Gilley and Debra Gwen Haley Gilley and two great-grandchildren, Easton Scott Gilley and Katherine Elizabeth Gilley.
      A memorial service will be held at the Browning Funeral Home, Keysvllle, on Friday at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Linda P. Gilley in Phenix.
