Resident, Dies
FISHERSVILLE, Dec. 25, Harriet Gibson Harris, a longtime
resident of Fishersville, died Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at the home of her
daughter, Bette L. Harris, in Farmville.
She was born December 6, 1909 in Augusta County, eldest daughter of
the late Charles Lewis and Mattie Margaret (Linhoss) Gibson.
Survivors include a son, Edgar Lee Harris, Jr., of Fishersville;
four daughters, Mrs. Ann C. Nelson of Waynesboro, Mrs. Judith H. Quick of Las
Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Bette L. Harris of Farmville, and Ms. Sherry L, Spaulding of
Greensboro, NC; two brothers, Merlin C. Gibson of Camp Hill, PA, and Vernon F.
Gibson of Harrisburg, PA; six grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. Her
husband, Edgar Lee Harris, Sr., and two daughters, Helene H. Spaulding and
Dorothy V. Harris, preceded her in death.
The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Friday,
December 26, at the Henry Funeral Home, and a Memorial Service will be held at 2
p.m. Saturday, December 27, In the Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren, where
she was a longtime member. The Rev. Eugene Lenker will officiate.

Dies Monday
WOODBRIDGE, Dec. 25 -Sylvia Dunnavant Allen, 86, of Woodbridge,
died Monday, December 22, 2003 at Potomac Hospital.
Mrs. Allen was a teacher for the Fairfax County School System and
was an Administrator for the Prince William County Schools. She was a member of
the Prince William County Teacher Association and Phi Delta Kappa.
She is survived by her husband, Hunter M. Allen.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m, Sunday, December
28, at Mountcastle Funeral Home, 13318 Occoquan Road, Woodbridge where funeral
services will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday, December 29. Interment will follow in
Manassas Cemetery.

CUMBERLAND, Dec. 23 -Andrew Hall Trent, Sr., 70, of Cumberland,
died Friday, December 19, 2003 at his home.
He was born April 18, 1933 In Buckingham County, a son of the late
Robert Lee Trent and Katie Huddleston Trent.
He is survived by a longtime companion, Mollie Fields; children,
Andrew Hall Trent, Jr. and his wife, Debbie and Robert Alien Trent all of
Cumberland, Rebecca Shumaker and her husband, Raymond of Dillwyn, Eddie Fields
and his wife, Linda of Powhatan, Timothy Fields of Powhatan, Teri Dizon of
Richmond, Danny Dandridge and his wife. Lisa of Amelia and Richard English of
Cumberland; a sister, Ola Huddleston of Cumberland; grandchildren, Melissa
Trent, Jennifer Trent, Tiffany Trent, Robert Alien Trent, Jr., Brandon and
Kaitlin Shumaker. Savannah Dizon, Kenley and Kiley Fields, Hadley and Harris
Cole.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at Dunkum Funeral Home,
Dillwyn, with Interment in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

'Dick' Wimmer, 78
DECEMBER 23 - Richard W. "Dick" Wimmer, 78, of Farmvllle, died
Friday, December 19, 2003 in Farmvllle.
He was born September 18, 1925 in Nason, Illinois, a son of the
late Albert and Agnes Penn Wimmer.
Mr. Wimmer was a member of Heritage Baptist Church and served his
country in the U.S. Navy. He worked at Alien Industries for 25 years, then he
worked for Nottoway Correctional Facility for five years. He drove the Farmville
Area Bus when it first started.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ida Mae Wimmer; his
children. Warren R. Wimmer and his wife, Laura of Orland Park, Illinois, Jeffrey
G. Wimmer of Biloxi, Mississippi, Kathy L. Smith and her husband, Stan of
Farmvllle and Karen L. Camilo of Farmvllle; 10 grandchildren; five great
grandchildren and his brother, Russell B. Wimmer of Falls Church. He was
preceded In death by two brothers. Harry and James Albert Wimmer.
A graveside service was held 2 p.m. Monday in Trinity Memorial
Gardens.

at her residence In Farmville.
She was born September 22, 1907 in Appomattox, a daughter of the
late Thomas Lee Page and Sally Doss Page. She was the widow of Robert 0. Wells.
Mrs. Wells was a resident of Farmville for 75 years and a member of
Farmville Baptist Church. She was a retired foreman for Craddock-Terry Shoe
Corporation.
She is survived by two sons, Barry L. Wells and his wife, Elma of
Danville and Robert L. Wells and his wife, Suzanne of Madison Heights; five
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert H. Page, Sr. of
Farmville and a sister, Virginia Estes of Rice.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at the Chapel of
Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Westvlew Cemetery.

Wednesday, December 17, 2003 In Charlottesville.
He was born March 29, 1983 in Prince Edward County. Everybody loved
Mark and Mark loved everybody.
He is survived by his mother, Jennifer Wood of Farmvllle; his father and
stepmother, James and Kathy Law of Disputanta; stepfather, Thomas Hayes of
Keysville: sister, Kristen Law of Columbus, GA; stepbrother, Douglas Hayes of
Farmville; maternal grandmother, Willa Wood of Farmville; paternal grandmother,
Bernice Law of Martinsville and many special family members and friends.
A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of
Shorter Funeral Home, Farmvllle, with interment in Westview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Evelyn W. Hancock, 85

Dies Tuesday
RICHMOND, Dec. 18 - Evelyn Walker Hancock, 85, of Richmond,
died Tuesday, December 16, 2003.
She was born in Charlotte County, a daughter of the late David Martin and
Florence Trent Hancock.
She was a graduate of VPI and SU with a degree in Home Economics.
After many years of foreign service with the US Department of State In Germany,
Korea, Japan and South America, she retired In 1985. She was a member of
Westminster Presbyterian Church.
She Is survived by three sisters, Avalyn H. Bittle, Lenna M. McIver
of Richmond and Annie H. McFarland of New Madison, Ohio; 15 nieces and nephews
and 25 great-nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Westminster
Presbyterian Church, 4103 Monument Ave., Richmond. Interment will follow In
Hollywood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening (Thursday) from 6 to 8
p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville.

Beverly
Calvin Bass, 93,
died Wednesday,
December 10, 2003.
He was born July 24, 1910, and died in his home where he was born
in Rice,
Prince Edward County, VA.
Educated in Prince Edward county schools, he traveled to Maryville,
Tennessee in 1928 to attend Maryville College, then earned a Masters Degree
in Science from the University of Tennessee. He remained there to teach,
coach, and become the assistant principal of Alcoa High School. He married
Beatrice Dreher on December 22, 1931. He was ordained as an elder at age 25
at New Providence Presbyterian Church in Maryville.
In 1942 Calvin, Bee, and two daughters returned to manage the family farm in
Rice. He was a lifetime member of Jamestown Presbyterian Church serving as
elder, adult Sunday school teacher, and trustee. He held various Presbytery
committees Including moderator, and was a representative to the Presbyterian
Synod and General Assembly. At age 81, he participated in Presbytery's
mission trip to Haiti.
Bass taught at Farmvllle High School until joining the faculty at
Hampden-Sydney College in 1944 lecturing In physics and chemistry, then
remaining in the chemistry department regularly from 1960 until his
retirement in 1976. At that time he was recipient of the coveted Algernon
Sydney Sullivan Medallion for community service. In 1998 he was awarded the
honorary Doctorate of Science degree from Hampden-Sydney College. He was
appointed to the Longwood College Board of Visitors for two and a half
terms. He was inducted into Longwood's prestigious Joan of Ark Society In
1997. Also by governor's appointment he served on the state committee which
originated the Virginia system of Community Colleges and served as a board
member at Southside Virginia Community College for a number of years. He was
chairman of the Prince Edward County School board during the Brown vs Board
of Education hearings and decision.
Bass owned and managed a Guernsey dairy farm and worked closely with the
Prince Edward Extension Services. He was a member of the Virginia Guernsey
Breeder's Association and the Virginia Cattleman Association often receiving
dairy herd improvement and production awards. For many years he served on
the Board of the Five County Fair and enjoyed raising and showing bantam
chickens.
He worked actively as chairman of the local Bicentennial Committee and
chairman of the Worsham Court House Preservation Committee. He was a member
of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia's Antiquities and
devoted to tracing family genealogy. Inspiring many others to follow suit.
In his elder years he returned to a life long Interest in woodworking,
making furniture and household Items that expressed his love of walnut. He
was an avid deer hunter and member of the Square Hunt Club.
Bass was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Beatrice Dreher Bass;
parents, May Morton Bass and Beverly Gates Bass; sisters, Anna May B.
Garnett, Nina B. Hitt and Marjorie B. Chambers.
He is survived by daughters, Elinor Hopklns and husband, Jim of Lynchburg;
Virginia Eaddy and husband, John of Knoxville, TN; Martha Bishop and
husband. Skip of Floyd;
Beverly Hines and husband, John of Rice; 12 grandchildren;
15 great-grandchildren; brother, Robert G. Bass and wife, Judy of Richmond
and sister, Dorothy B. Alexandra of High Point, NC.
Interment was in the Bass Family Plot at Pisgah Baptist Church In Rice on
December 13. A memorial service followed at Jamestown Presbyterian Church.
The Reverends Arthur Stevens, William L. Wilson, Jim Pfeiffer, Linda Rainey
participated in the service. Music was provided by John Eaddy, Emily Prince
and the Somers Family. A reception was given by the members of the Jamestown
Presbyterian Church.

Dies Monday
DECEMBER 16 - Basil Taylor Atkins, 79, of Farmvllle, died Monday,
December 15, 2003 in Farmvllle.
He was born May 25, 1924 in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, a son of the late Walter
Taylor Atkins.
Mr. Atkins served his country In the United States Army and was a
veteran of World War II. He was co-founder of State Wide Realty Company and was
in the real estate business for 45 years. He was a member of VFW Post 7059, a
member of the local, state and National Real Estate Boards and he still held his
real estate license.
He is survived by his sons, Larry Atkins and his wife, Margaret and
Jeffrey Atkins all of Farmville; his daughter, Kathryn "Kitty" Jackson and her
husband, Wayne of Farmville; his grandchildren, Phillip and Michael T. Jarrell
both of Richmond, Brian T. Atkins, Sheri Atkins Gordon and Lauren Atkins all of
Farmvllle;
one great-granddaughter, Olivia Gordon of Farmville and several nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marie K. Atkins.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Pisgah Baptist
Church, Rice, with Interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

WINGINA, Dec. 16 - George Ford Cunningham, Sr., 74, of Buckingham
County, died Monday, December 15, 2003 at his residence.
Born August 13, 1929 at Norwood (Nelson County), he was a son of
the late Frank Cunningham and Carrie Ragland Cunningham.
Mr. Cunningham was a retired foreman with C & 0 Railroad with over 37 years of
service.
He is survived by his son, George F. Cunningham, Jr., of Shipman;
his daughter, Georgia Ann Taylor of Wingina; his brother, Frank Cunningham, Jr.;
his two sisters, Carrie E. Carter of Arrlngton and Hallie Carter of Gladstone;
six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at
Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel in Lovlngston with the Rev. Earl Ragland
officiating. Interment will follow in the Scottsville Cemetery.

Dies In North Carolina
DURHAM, NC, Dec. 16 -Archibald McDowell Bynum, 84, of Durham, NC,
died Friday, December 5, 2003 in The Pavilion Nursing Center in Croasdaile
Village.
Mr. Bynum was a native of Farmvllle. He graduated from
Hampden-Sydney College and moved to Durham as a bookkeeper for Baldwin
Department Store.
He is survived by his wife, Martha McLennan Bynum; two children,
Archibald McDowell Bynum, Jr. and Martha Bynum Brame both of Durham, NC; three
grandchildren, Martha Murdaugh Brame, Robert Marshall Brame, Jr. and Alice Bynum
Brame and one sister, Mary Bynum Booker of Farmvllle.
A private memorial service will be held by the family at a later
date.

PROSPECT, Dec. 16 - Francis A. "Buck" Cook, 90, of Prospect, died
Saturday, December 13, 2003.
Mr. Cook was a service station operator in Farmvllle for nearly 40
years, a retired fanner and a former member of the Farmvllle Volunteer Fire
Department.
He is survived by a son, Donald A. Cook of Prospect; a daughter,
Nancy C. Home and her husband, Tom of Richmond; two sisters, Ethel Adams of
Appomattox and Margie Strosnider of Farmvllle; grandchildren, Whitney Veazey,

DECEMBER 16 - Lola Elizabeth "Lizzie" Shapard Denton, died Friday,
December 12, 2003 at Southslde Community Hospital.
She was born January 4, 1908 in Halifax County, a daughter of the
late Charlie Lee and Anna Jackson Shapard.
Mrs. Denton was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, since 1929
where she served as WMU leader, Sunbeam Leader, Sunday School teacher and Bible
School teacher.
She is survived by three daughters, Margaret D. Johnson of
Farmvllle, Helen D. Garnett of Drakes Branch and Dora D. Snotherly of State
Road, NC;
two sons, Arthur L. Denton and his wife, Lena of Colonial Heights and Ted Denton
and his wife, Frankie of Raleigh, NC; two daughters-in-law, Ann Denton Dowdy of
Atlanta, GA and Shirley Denton Bennett of Chinquapin, NC; one brother-in-law,
Jake Denton of Andersonville, GA; 22 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren and
one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin
Luther Denton and sons, Martin and Ray.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church
conducted by the Rev. George Vaughan and the Rev. Tony Reeves. Interment
followed in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Nebo Baptist Church
Building Fund or the Charlotte County Rescue Squad.
