      AUGUST 16 - Joseph A. Angello, 76, of Farmville, died Monday, August 8, 2005.
      He was born September 6, 1928 in New Jersey, the son of the late Frank and Mane Angello.
      He is survived by his wife, Pamela K. Angello; daughters, Catherine Mitchell of Charlotte Court House, Marie Angello of Dublin, PA and Jodilynn Mack of Suffolk; seven grandchildren, Michelle Novak, Jodi and Danlelle Mitchell, Matthew Angello, Joseph, Erin and Sean Mack.
      A memorial service was held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Theresa Catholic Church with interment in Trinity Memorial Gardens.

Clarence A. Howard, 90
Retired Dairy Farmer
Dies Saturday


      ABILENE, August 16 - Clarence Albert Howard, 90, of Abilene, died Saturday, August 13, 2005.
      He was the son of the late Elisha Howard and Ida Mae Houston. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Valeria A. (Bug) Howard and a son. Mark A. Taylor.
      Mr. Howard and his brother, John, were partners in a dairy and sawmill operation for over 40 years. He was a lifelong member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church.
      He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth D. Howard; three sons, Bobby A. Howard and wife. Rose Marie of Charlotte Court House, James A. Howard and wife, Karon of Abilene and Larry Alger of Keysvllle; two daughters, Diane H. Gallagher and husband, Ron of Mechanicsville and Susan T. Scruggs and husband, Scott of Abilene; ten grandchildren: eight great-grandchildren; one brother, John 0. Howard and wife, Winifred of Abilene; one sister, Soph Cole of Wytheville and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
      Funeral services were held 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Mt. Nebo Baptist Church Building Fund.

Frank Ownby, 89
Of Dillwyn
Dies Saturday

     DILLWYN, August 16 - Frank Ownby, 89, of Dillwyn, died Saturday, August 13, 2005.
     He was born August 7, 1916 in Seiver County, TN, a son of the late Aaron Ownby and Lutisha Huskey Ownby.
     He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Blanche McCraw Ownby and a daughter, Phyllis Ownby Abbott of Mechanicsville
     Funeral services were held today (Tuesday) at 11 a.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn, with interment in Cedar Baptist Church Cemetery.
    Memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Baptist Church Building Fund or the Buckingham County Rescue Squad.

      CUMBERLAND, August 11 - Mrs. Ida Taliaferro Lee, 98, of Cumberland, departed this life on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 in Farmville.
      She is survived by a son, Thomas Taliaferro; two daughters, Minnie Virginia Smith of Paterson, NJ, and Dr. Rita M. Taliaferro of Petersburg; numerous grandchildren, two devoted, Minnitti Taliaferro and Peggy Griggs; great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and great-great-great-grandchildren;one daughter-in-law, Carrie Williams Taliaferro, and one sister-in-law, Alease Johnson;numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
      Funeral services will be held Saturday, 1 p.m. at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Cumberland. Rev. Clarence Moore, pastor, officiating, with interment in the church cemetery.

      ARVONIA, August 11 - Herman Glover Davis, Sr., 67, of Arvonia, died at home Monday, August 8, 2005.
      Born August 11, 1937 in Buckingham County, he was a son of the late Willie Hall and Annie Ripley Davis. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Ann Toney Davis, and two brothers, Willie R. and Richard H. Davis.
      Mr. Davis leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 20 years. Charlotte Holman Davis;his sons, Herman, Jr., of Arvonia, and Teddy, of Scottsville;three brothers, John M., Luther E., and Clarence J. Davis, all of Arvonia; three sisters, Marie Parker, Annie Mae Wharam and Shelby Jean Jones, all of New Canton; five grandchildren, Angela Davis McMahon, Daniel Hall Davis, Heather Davis Wickizer, Matthew Davis and Samantha Doris Davis; a great-grandchild, Austin Justiz Wickizer; two step-sons, Bret Poore of Richmond, and Lonnie Poore of New Canton; two step-grandchildren, Lauren Ashley Poore and Stewart Alien Poore.
      He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, friend and mentor giving his love and devotion to all.
      The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Colbert Funeral Home, Bremo Bluff.
      A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, August 12, at the Welcome Wesleyan Church, Rt. 15, Arvonia. Pastor Don Lewis will officiate. Interment will be in the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery, Rt. 652, Arvonia.
      The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Herman's memory to the American Cancer Society, the Buckingham County Rescue Squad, and St. Jude's Children's Hospital.

Buried Thursday


      GLADSTONE, August 11 - Jeannie Virginous Kidd, 88, of Gladstone, died Tuesday, August 9, 2005. He was born May 21, 1917 in Buckingham County, the son of the late Virginous Kidd and Alice Via Kidd and his wife was the late Corine S. Kidd.
      Mr. Kidd is survived by four children, Jean Marcoccio and husband, Joe, Judith Kidd and special friend, .Elbert Shifflett, Donna Fleming and husband, Dick and Roger Kidd; a brother, Emmett Kidd and wife, Margaret: 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
      He was retired from VDOT and a long standing member of Spears Mt. Baptist Church. Mr. Kidd was a loving father and grandfather and he loved the outdoors and gardening. He was grateful to his friends and his church family.
     Funeral services were held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Spears Mountain Baptist Church with interment in the Swann Family Cemetery.

James McCormick, 67

Dies Friday


      RICE, August 9 - James McCormick, 67, died Friday, August 5, 2005, at his residence in Rice. He was born February 5, 1938, in Louisville, KY, a son of the late Morris and Loretta Keene McCormick.
      Mr. McCormick is retired from Arena Trucking Company. He served as a deacon for 29 years at Sharon Baptist Church.
      He is survived by his wife, Betty A. McCormick: two sons, James Scott McCormick of Rice and John Daniel McCormick and wife, Amy, also of Rice; a brother, Morris H. McCormick of Athens, TN; sisters, Gladys McCormick Walker of Jackson, TN, and Alice McCormick Wynn of Cadiz, KY; and three grandchildren, Nash McCormick, Ashley dark and Kenny dark. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother.
      A funeral service was held Monday at Sharon Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

Wallace L. Shumaker, 43
Buckingham Volunteer
Dies In Accident


      BUCKINGHAM, August 9 - Wallace Layne Shumaker, 43, of Buckingham County, was killed in an automobile accident Saturday, August 6, 2005.
      He is survived by his parents, William T. and Ethelene Reynolds Shumaker of Dillwyn;his sister, Laura Spittle and her husband, David of Amelia; a brother, William W. Shumaker and his wife, Michelle of Dillwyn;and one niece, Lauren Raye Spittle of Amelia.
      Mr. Shumaker was a volunteer who spent much of his time serving others. He was an employee of Kyanite Mining Corporation for approximately 25 years, a member of the Commonwealth Regional Council (formerly Piedmont Planning Commission), and currently served as president of the Buckingham County-Wide Volunteer Rescue Squad. He also served as second lieutenant on the Buckingham County Volunteer Fire Department, Dillwyn Unit. Wallace was a friend who will be greatly missed. He recently returned from Honduras on one of his medical mission trips to help others in other countries.
      Visitation will be held Tuesday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Dunkum Funeral Home in Dillwyn. Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home with burial at St. Andrews Baptist Church cemetery.
      Memorials may be made to the Dillwyn Fire Department or the Buckingham County Rescue Squad, Dillwyn, VA 23936.

Dies In Amelia


      CUMBERLAND, August 9 - Bruce V. Parker, 39, of Cumberland County, died Sunday, August 7, 2005 in an Amelia County accident. He was the son of John B. and Edith Dowdy Parker.
     He is survived by three sisters, Debra P. Crone of Cumberland, Arnette Burd of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Pamela P. Coward of Amelia; one brother, Jonathan C. Parker of Richmond; three nieces and four nephews.
      Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with interment in Center Presbyterian Church cemetery in Cumberland.
      The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7-8:30 p.m. at Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville.

Mary Scott Hillsman, 94

Dies In Richmond


      AMELIA, August 9 - Mary Scott Bruce Hillsman, 94, formerly of the Saylor's Creek community of Amelia County, died in Richmond on Monday, August 8, 2005.
      The widow of Daniel Allen Hillsman, Sr., she is survived by her son, Daniel Allen Hillsman, Jr., of Richmond; one sister, Nancye Bruce Noel of Farmville;two brothers, John G. Bruce of Richmond and Franklin A. Bruce of Farmville; and 16 nieces and nephews.
      Reared in Rice, Mrs. Hillsman was graduated from State Teachers College, now Longwood University, and then spent most of her 40-year teaching career in the Amelia County Public Schools. She was a former trustee of Bethel United Methodist Church in Jetersville and was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
      A graveside service will be held at the Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery on Thursday, August 11, at 11 a.m.
      Memorial donations may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund or to a charity of your choice.

Mrs. Ruth L. Palmer, 97

Dies Saturday

      GREEN BAY, August 9 - Mrs. Ruth Love Palmer, 97, of Green Bay, died Saturday, August 6, 2005. Mrs. Palmer was born in Virginia, the daughter of John Albert and Lela Bruce Love on March 1, 1908. She was the widow of the former state senator George Washington Palmer.
      Mrs. Palmer was a teacher with the public school systems, a member of Liberty Christian Church, and organist for the church for more than 40 years. She was also active in other aspects of the community including a Sunday School teacher for many years.
      She is survived by a daughter, Florence West and son-in-law, Fred West of Green Bay;two grandchildren, Gayle West Farmer and George Palmer West; six great-grandchildren, Fred Farmer, Katie F. Thomas, Josh West, Adam Farmer, Robin West and Megan West; and one great-great-grandson. Cole Blane Farmer.
      The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, August 9, at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. with services conducted from Liberty Christian Church on Wednesday at 2 p.m., followed by interment in the church cemetery. Officiating minister will be the Rev. Elmer Johnson of Canada, former pastor of Liberty Christian Church and close friend of the family.

     AUGUST 9 - Deborah L. Fulton, 50, died Saturday, July 30, 2005, in Washington, D.C.
      She was the beloved mother of Tamara S., Candice A., Channon A., Sloan A., and the late Ramsey C. Fulton.
     She was the devoted daughter of Evelyn C. Scott (John) and Edward L. Jones (Sandra). She is also survived by two grandchildren, four sisters, spiritual brothers and sisters, and a host of other family and friends.

Lois Dowdy Duncan, 91
Former H-SC Resident
Dies Monday


      AUGUST 9 - Lois Dowdy Duncan, 91, died Monday, August 8,2005.
      She was the daughter of the late Jimmy and Nellie Dowdy and the widow of the late Herman Lee Duncan. Mrs. Duncan was raised with a large family on a farm near Farmville. She spent her married life at Hampden-Sydney College. Her widowhood was lived in Poquoson, and with her daughter in York County. Mrs. Duncan enjoyed flower gardening and the Hill Garden Club. She loved serving her Lord in the church and community.
      She was the gentle mother of Arlene Garrett and her husband, George Edward Garrett and the late Gerald Duncan and his wife, Dianne. She was the beloved grandmother of Susan Eng, Edward Garrett, Sherry Mayes, and Becky Whitehurst, and seven great-grandchildren. She is survived by two brothers, Herman Dowdy and Robert Dowdy, and seven sisters, Julia Malberg, Myrtle Davenport, Gertrude Anderson, Catherine Johloski, Epsie Paterson, Bernice Coakley, and Joann Lewis, also brother-in-law, Roy Duncan and his wife Eliza, and sister-in-law, Goldzie Duncan, and many nieces and nephews. Those who cared for her at Dominion Village and Bayside at Poquoson are considered her extended family and cherished friends.
      Mrs. Duncan was a member of College Presbyterian Church at Hampden-Sydney where a celebration of life service will be Thursday, Aug. 11,2 p.m., with interment in the church cemetery.
