Dies Sunday
BUCKINGHAM, April 5 - Nannie Beasley Proffitt,
89, of Buckingham, died Sunday, April 3, 2005 in Farmville.
She was born February 10, 1916 In Buckingham, a
daughter of the late Sylvester V. and Eliza Webb Beasley. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Vernard C. Proffitt.
She is survived by her daughter, Ethel Mae P. Bickford
and her husband, John and her grandchildren, Vernard Elson and Hayley Nicole
Bickford.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at
Concord Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today (Tuesday)
from 2 to 8 p.m. at her residence in Buckingham.

APRIL 5 - Charles Oscar Ferguson, 80, of
Farmvllle, died Friday, April 1, 2005.
He was born in Virginia, the son of the late
Preston and Bessie Whorley Ferguson.
Mr. Ferguson was a Navy veteran of World
War II.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Layne Ferguson
of Farmville; a son, Charles Wayne Ferguson of Amherst and his life partner,
Robert Reeves of Amherst; a daughter, Darlene Bratcher and husband, Dick of
Pamplln; a sister, Kalena Baldwin of Pamplin; a brother, Cecil Hugh Ferguson of
Madison Heights; a step-granddaughter, Katie Bratcher of Pamplin; several
sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by two sisters,
Fannie Terry and Ossie Southall and a brother, Dillard Ferguson.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday at
Farmville Baptist Church with interment in Spring Creek Baptist Church Cemetery,
Darlington Heights.

Held in Buckingham
BUCKINGHAM, April 5 - Marjorie Ragland Maddox,
90, of Buckingham, formerly a resident of Springfield, died Saturday, April 2,
2005.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lula
and Garland Ragland, Sr.; her stepmother, Courtney Louise Taylor Ragland; her
husband, William Oscar Maddox; two brothers, Woodrow and Elwood Ragland and two
sisters, Virginia John-son and Flossie Tucker.
Survivors include six brothers, Benson, Odell,
Lee, Jack, James and Gene Ragland; four sisters, Dorothy Adcock, Shirley Hooker,
Barbara Hackett and Vernelle Agee and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Springfield United Methodist
Church and the Rose Bush Senior Citizens Club. Since moving back to Buckingham,
she became a member of Glenmore United Methodist Church, Buckingham.
A funeral service was held at Glenmore United
Methodist Church. The Reverend James 0. Radford officiated. Interment followed
in the church cemetery.

She was born at "Stoney Point", Cumberland
County, a daughter of the late Thaddeus Lee and Martha Maria Ranson Davis. She
was preceded In death by her husband. Earl William Blanton, Sr. and a sister,
Octavia Davis Fischer.
She is survived by a son. Earl William
Blanton, Jr. and wife, Patricia Leman Blanton of Cumberland; a daughter, Martha
Elizabeth Blanton Beasley and husband, Donald Ray Beasley of Yorktown; two
brothers, Robert Lee Davis of Farmville and William Porter Davis of Cumberland
and four grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 12 noon Thursday
at Center Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Cumberland.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening
from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home, Farmville. Private

APRIL 5 - Mary Elizabeth (Bette) Jensma, 68, of
Farmville, died Sunday, April 3, 2005.
She was born April 17, 1936 In New Jersey. She
was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Garret Jensma.
Mrs. Jensma was a retired French teacher.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Jeanne Jensma of
Augusta, Michigan and nephews, Barry Hillmann and Robert Hillmann.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April
6, 2005 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Shorter Funeral Home, Farmville, with
interment in Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive

Nannie W. Lyon, 86
NEWPORT NEWS, April 5 - Nannie Watson Lyon, 86, a
former civilian head of Procurement Office at Ft. Eustis, died Wednesday, March
30, 2005, at Sentara Hospital, Hampton, from complications related to a stroke.
Mrs. Lyon was born in Appomattox and graduated
from Appomattox High School in 1937. Between 1941 and 1952, she held positions
with the Newport News Shipyard and with Noland Company, Inc. In 1952, she began
her 27 year career with the U.S. Civil Service, accepting a position in
Headquarters, Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base. She later
transferred to the U.S. Army Transportation Command and Fort Eustis, working in
the area of contracts and procurement. In 1966 she was promoted to Procurement
Officer serving in a Deputy role as the civilian Procurement Officer. She held
the distinction of being the first female civilian Procurement Officer in the
Transportation Command, responsible for the Army's transportation contracts and
procurements nationwide.
Before her retirement in 1979 she was also active
in the Historical and Archaeological Association at Fort Eustis, serving as its
treasurer from its formulation In 1965 to 1977.
After retirement, Mrs. Lyon pursued her avid
interests in quilting and in family history related to her French Huguenot
ancestry dating from 1700 in this country. She was the organizer of the
Watson-Perrow Cemetery Restoration Committee, under whose leadership between
1995 and 2004 a group of extended family members successfully restored a large
private cemetery in Buckingham County, where ancestors from 1786-1928 are
buried. Since September 2003, she has been a resident of the Chesapeake Baptist
Retirement Community in Newport News. She was a member of Riverside Baptist
Church, the Virginia Baptist Historical Society, and Order of the Eastern Star
(Warwick Chapter No. 43).
She was the widow of Russell W. Lyon who died in
1994. Her first marriage to Wiley F. Hamilton ended in divorce in 1967. One of
her two daughters, Janet Hamilton Scott, predeceased her in 1995.
Mrs. Lyon is survived by her daughter, Nancy
Hamilton Lawrence and son-in-law, J. Richard Lawrence, Jr. of Falls Church; a
stepdaughter. Gall Lyon Goodwin of Albuquerque, NM; a stepson, Russell William
Lyon, Jr. of Chicago; four grandchildren, Luther T. Scott of Yorktown, Wenona
Scott Atkins of Willis, James R. Lawrence, III of New York City and Katherine
Lawrence Perry of Arlington and four great-grandchildren, Emily Scott, Trenton
Scott, Abigail Scott and Sol Atkins. She is also survived by two brothers, Joe
B. Watson of Roseville, CA and Robert L. Watson of Newport News.
The family will receive visitors on Friday, April
8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Riverside-Altmeyer Funeral Home, 7415 River Road in
Newport News.
The funeral will be Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m.
at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Buckingham County, followed by the burial at
Liberty Cemetery in Appomattox.

ALTON, April 5 - Karen Graves Lucado McKinney, 52, of Alton, died Wednesday,
March 30,2005.
She was born April 11, 1952 in Halifax County, a
daughter of Betty Hammock Graves, of Keysville, and the late James Patrick
Graves, Sr.
Mrs. McKinney was a member of Alton Baptist
Church and the National Association of Realtors.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her
husband, Donnie McKinney, Sr.; a son, Patrick Edward Lucado of Horicon, WI; two
daughters, Ellen Lucado Matthews and Maria JoAnne Lucado both of South Boston; a
stepson, Donald Franklin "Frankie" McKinney, Jr. of Halifax: a brother, James
Patrick Graves, Jr. of Keysville;a granddaughter, Jalyn Rose Matthews and three
grandsons, Kobe Wilson Epps, Edward Willard "E.W." Lucado and Jacob Franklin
McKinney.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday at
Alton Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Ball and the Rev. Richard Saunders
officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

CHARLOTTE CH, March 31 - Paul Martin DiLullo, 31,
of Charlotte Court House, died Monday, March 28, 2005 at the Baptist Hospital in
Nashville, TN.
Formerly of Wyckoff, NJ, he was born July 16,
1973. He was a graduate of the Prince Edward Academy (Fuqua School) in Farmvllle
and recently worked as a Project manager in the aviation industry for Threshold
Technologies, Inc. of Ontario, California. He also spent several years as a
customer service specialist in the telecommunication Industry. He was a former
member of the Charlotte Court House Volunteer Fire Department and Charlotte
County Rescue Squad.
He is survived by his parents, Col. Ralph S. and
Jodie DiLullo;his three brothers, Michael DiLullo of Charlotte Court House, Mark
DiLullo of Alta Loma, CA and Matthew DiLullo of Meredith, NH; his grandmother,
Rosalie DiLullo of Paterson, NJ;his aunt, Patricia DiLullo of Paterson, NJ and
her family; his uncles, Louis DiLullo of Easton, PA and his family and Jim
Martin of Anaheim, CA and his family.
Viewing will be held at Browning Funeral Home in
Keysville on Thursday, March 31 beginning at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be
held on Friday, April 1 at 10 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Meherrin, followed by interment.

48, of Victoria, a painter, died Saturday, March 26, 2005.
He is survived by his father and stepmother,

Victoria; a sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Oscar Ryder of Victoria; a

APPOMATTOX, March 29 - Erma Mae Mann Coflin, 66,
of Appomattox, died Friday, March 25, 2004 at her residence following a lengthy
illness.
Born May 23, 1938 in Charlotte County, she was a
daughter of the late Andrew Bea and Pear Elizabeth Brooks Mann.
Mrs. Coflin was a member of Pleasant Grove
Baptist church and along with her husband was co-owner of Coflin Refrigeration
and Appliance in Appomattox. She had been a past member of the Pamplin Town
Council, Appomattox Chamber of Commerce, Spout Spring Ruritan Club and the
American Heart Association. For many years she had volunteered to arrange the
Christmas decorations for downtown Appomattox.
She is survived by her husband, Joseph (Joe) C.
Coflin; one daughter, Theresa A. Cooper and her husband, Mike of Moody, Alabama;
eight sons, Roy B. Stanton, Jr. and his wife, Pearl, Robert J. (Jimmy) Mines and
Johnny C, Coflin and his wife, Laura all of Pamplin, Andrew Clayton Stanton and
his fiancée, Cindy of Columbia, SC, Charlie J. Mines of Culpeper, Andrew J.
(Jackie) Mines and his wife, Rita of Ruther Glen, Joseph T. (Tommy) Coflin and
his wife, Bobbie of Virginia Beach and David L. Coflin of Aspen, Colorado; one
brother, Andrew (Roach) Mann and his wife, Myra of Lynchburg; 22 grandchildren,
nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in
death by two brothers, George Edward Mann and Lewis A. Mann, Sr.; two sisters,
Thelma M. Baldwin and Helen M. Elder and two grandchildren, Tommy and Jeremy
Stanton.
Memorial services were held 6 p.m. Monday at
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. J. D. Mayday and the Rev. Rodney
Blanks. An interment service will take place at a later date.

MARCH 24 - Margaret Kimball Bruce, 87, died
at home in Richmond on Tuesday, March 22,2005.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, John
G. Bruce; one sister, Katie Ruth Branch of Georgia; four brothers, James R.
Kimball, Charles Howard Kimball, Harold E. Kimball and his wife. Nancy and
Thomas R. Kimball and his wife, Melanie, all of Georgia; a sister-in-law, Mary
Scott Bruce Hillsman of Richmond; a brother-in-law, Franklin A. Bruce and his
wife, Frances of Farmvllle; a sister-in-law. Nancy Bruce Noel of Farmvllle and
24 nieces and nephews.
After 18 years as the infirmary nurse, she
retired in 1990 from the University of Richmond. Mrs. Bruce was a member of
River Road Baptist Church for 46 years, the Tuckahoe Women's Club and the
Spotswood Park Garden Club.
A memorial service will be held at River Road
Baptist Church on Friday at 11 a.m. followed by interment in Westview Cemetery
in Farmvllle at 2:30 p.m.

James D. "Jim" Vaughan, 82
Of Keysvllle
Dies Friday
KEYSVILLE, March 22 -
James D. "Jim" Vaughan, 82, of Keysvllle, died Friday, March 18, 2005 after a
short illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Dorey Vaughan.
He is survived by two sons, J. Donald Vaughan,
Jr. and wife, Betty and Richard E. Vaughan and wife, Lisa; two grandchildren,
Sheila Vaughan Seagle and husband, Doug, and James Chandler Vaughan; two
great-grandchildren, Ireland Hamilton Seagle and Jayden Douglas Seagle all of
Keysvllle.
Mr. Vaughan was a World War II Navy veteran, a
retired merchant and auctioneer.
In 1950, he co-owned and operated Garland &
Vaughan Dry Goods & Grocery. In 1958, he and his wife opened and operated
Vaughan's Department Store in Keysvllle for approximately 30 years and the
Pauline Shop in chase City.
In the drought of 1963, Mr. Vaughan co-owned Pettus-Vaughan
Hay Company, handling grain distributed by the government for the drought
stricken farmers In Charlotte County.
Mr. Vaughan obtained his auctioneers license in
1962 and established Vaughan Auction & Land Company. The company increased to
three auctioneers when his sons, Donald and Richard, joined the company,
changing the name to Vaughan Auction & Realty. The auction company conducted
sales in seven states for the Small Business Administration. He was a past
president and an active member of the Virginia Auctioneers Association.
He was an active cattle farmer for many years.
His knowledge of livestock and feed sources helped establish Commodity Feeds In
2004.
Mr. Vaughan was a member of Ash Camp Baptist
Church and was an active member of Ash Camp's Men's Class #10.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 4 p.m. at
Ash Camp Baptist Church.

Keysville Volunteer Fire Department, the Charlotte County Rescue Squad, Ash Camp
Baptist church or a church of your choice.

BUCKINGHAM, March 22 - Houston Harry Crews, 83,
of Buckingham, died Friday, March 18, 2005.
He was born December 5, 1921, in Buckingham, son
of the late Harry A. and Bessie Strasburg Crews. He was preceded in death by a
sister, Christine C. Eades.
Mr. Crews is survived by four brothers, Eugene W.
Crews and wife. Grace of Richmond, Jesse A. Crews and wife, Sarah of
Mechanicsville, Cabell L. Crews and wife, Margaret of Lynchburg, and James
Dabney Crews and wife, June of Buckingham: and many nieces and nephews.
He was a World War II veteran and Korean War
veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force in both wars. He is a retiree of Verizon
Telephone Co. and also a farmer.
Mr. Crews was a life member of Mulberry Grove
Baptist Church and served as a trustee for many years, and was a member of the
Board of Deacons.
He was a member and past master of Buckingham
Lodge 242, A.F. & A.M., member and past master of George Lodge 32, A.F. & A.M.,

Baptist Church, Sunday, March 20, with Masonic graveside rites.

Dies Saturday
RICHMOND, March 22 - Mary D. Farmer, 76, of
Richmond, died Saturday, March 19, 2005. She was the widow of William H. Farmer
Jr.
She is survived by three children, Nancy F.
Barnett and husband, Bobby, William E. Farmer, and Peggy F. Little and her
husband, Bruce; two sisters, Dorris Chandler and Fleta Headley; four
grandchildren, Katherine Chafin and her husband, Matthew, Victoria Barnett, Amy
and Erin Little.
Funeral services were held today (Tuesday) at the
Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Road, with interment
in Dale Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to Forest Hill
Presbyterian Church.

MARCH 22 - Mary Church, 64, sister of Farmville
resident, Fred Smith, died at her home in Phillipsburg, NJ, March 16, 2005. She
was born July 29, 1940.
Ms. Church was predeceased by a son, Walter Von
Ronne, Jr. in 1986.
She is survived by a son, Paul Von Ronne of
Phillipsburg, NJ; a grandson. Richard Von Ronne, also of Phillipsburg; a
brother, Fred Smith of Farmville, and a sister, Shirley Kimball of Glendale, AZ.
Viewing and funeral services were held Monday,
March 21, at Higgins Home for Funerals, Watchung, NJ.
Ms. Church was interred next to her son at
Somerset Hills Memorial Park, Basking Ridge, NJ.
